I love the book of Acts, which ought to be called the Acts of the Holy Spirit.
There is always something new to discover with every reading.
For some reason until last night, the peroration of Stephen’s testimony to the Sanhedrin never fully registered with me. Last night it struck me like a thunder bolt. Stephen was trying to open their eyes to Israel’s chief affliction, the fact that they always resisted the Holy Spirit, and were doing so now.
That same “resistance” leads many astray even today.
Acts is one of my favourite books, too.

I’m infatuated with that Eagle photo…everything about it…the glint in the eye, the translucency of the beak, the air pressure on the forward feathers… the curves and spread of the wing feathers. It reminds me of a Marine in full dress uniform standing at the door of the Oval Office, of a military rifle team, of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown….all spit and polish, all movement and systems completely and minutely controlled.

I’ve been on snow watch. We watched the snow yesterday. 8-10 inches across the metro and a number of truckers and so forth got stuck on I-44 just west of Six Flags trying to get up a hill with a biggish grade. Then there was one of the main arteries – US 40/I-64 – in the ‘burbs that has now pretty much been cleared. That’s easier to deal with as there are outer roads that could be cleared off to get vehicles out of the way, but as soon as plowing would happen, an hour later everything was coated again.
Today, we dig out.
With all luck, our very nice next door neighbor got fuel for his talking frog, uh, snow blower, and he might do the neighborly thing and clear off our driveway and walk. He does that, I’m getting him an expensive bottle of spirits. Otherwise, the old coal shovel is going to get a lot of work.
Ha! I just gave my neighbor a big bottle of Rumchata for the last few years’ of driveway snow-clearing he has undertaken on my behalf. Really weird weather here in NE – far warmer than it should be and only twice has my neighbor cleared my driveway this winter. Hoping my dwarf weeping willow tree is still dormant so I can prune it – must be done during the winter or it will stunt it’s growth. Peach trees have to wait until just before the sap starts – that is going to be tricky, with this strange weather.
We usually give him Jameson black label. Actually, due to circumstances, another person in this household cleared everything off. An early appointment.

Right where we are we’re fine. Our street is treacherous, but the county roads are all passable. This is not our first rodeo. And yesterday was the first time I can remember schools calling off an hour or two ahead of the forecasted arrival. That’s one of the things that propelled me to work at home: bosses who would not let us out of work until the first flakes started to fall. By then, it’s too late.

After the civil war they played with the concept of having ten eagles make one Union. That would have been a BIG coin, had they ever made one–almost ten troy ounces of gold.
Ah, there we go…the derivation of the “double Eagle.” Thank you, indeed. And, of course, the St Gaudens double Eagle…still thought by many to be the most beautiful coin ever minted/produced. I would love to have one that is NOT encased in plastic. I have yet to actually FEEL this gorgeous coin.

The coin dealer will probably look at you like you’re crazy, because they aren’t that much cheaper than many uncirculated “slabbed” pieces, and you’d be taking a fairly large hit in grade to not save much money. But if you explain why he/she might understand.

Not the eagle, but the double eagle of 1933.
The double eagle ($20) of 1933 was made in quantity at the US mint, but not released before Roosevelt recalled the gold. So technically, one in private hands is considered stolen property. The one that was given to King Farouk is the only exception.

There was a big stink about it some years ago, someone had ten of them. The government confiscated them.

How much is an Eagle going for these days Steve?
That depends very, very heavily on which one.
We stopped making them in the 1930s and many from that era are relatively inexpensive, barely more expensive than the gold that’s in them. But just about any US gold from before 1834 is VERY expensive, five figures and more.
I just looked it up; this coin is probably about an MS-63 grade (on a scale of 1-70) and the book says it’s $125,000 in that grade. And that’s probably a low figure.

I remember hearing of a person who bought a tin can full of old buttons at an auction. When they got home with it they found that someone had hidden some gold coins among them. They were the small type, of lower denomination.
Also, there is/was a video on YouTube of a guy using a metal detector who found a stash of coins out in an open field. Several of them were gold. Mid-1800’s if I remember rightly.
Before the California gold find in 1848 (boy, I’ll bet Mexico was PISSED, they’d just lost CA to us), our gold coinage was very sparse, a few thousand produced in a year was typical. In the time leading up to 1834, the coins had more gold in them than their face value in terms of silver dollars, so a huge percentage of them got melted; there are some issues where only three or five of them are known to still exist. As a result, flipping through my price guide looking at half eagles, there are only a handful of them priced at less than $20K in beat-up but still technically uncirculated (not worn, but lots of scratches and dings) condition (generally not considered desirable).
Example, the 1822 $5 gold, 17,000 of them were made, but only three are known to still exist and the last one sold went for five million dollars, and it was lightly circulated.
So if I kicked over a rock and found a bucket—I’d REALLY not expect it to contain gold that old. Certainly not here in Colorado, where that bucket would have been buried no earlier than the 1850s and the old gold was really rare even then.
In 1834 we reduced the weight in the gold coinage, the melting down stopped, and they become more common but still tend to be in high four or low five figures, uncirculated. In Extra Fine condition, however, an 1835-1838 can be had for about a thousand bucks. A lot depends on how fussy you are about condition!

Owners of Amazon’s Ring home-security systems can see inside and outside their homes remotely — but so can a bunch of tech workers in a location that’s a hotbed of cybercrime, new reports suggest.
E-commerce giant Amazon bought Ring for $853 million last year, and the New York Times’ popular Wirecutter website soon deemed Ring’s video-equipped doorbell a worthy addition to home security.
But in addition to the doorbells, and a variety of outdoor cameras and sensors, Ring also sells indoor cameras that integrate with its home-security system, and Wirecutter has now added a warning to its review: “A recent story in The Intercept alleges that Ring may have allowed its employees inappropriate and potentially unrestricted access to its customers’ video streams or recordings.”
The Intercept, a tech-focused news site, reportedthat despite Ring’s mission to keep homes and their occupants secure, “the company’s treatment of customer video feeds has been anything but.”
The company gave its Ukraine-based R&D team “virtually unfettered access” to “every video created by every Ring camera around the world,” according to The Intercept.
“The Ukraine team was also provided with a corresponding database that linked each specific video file to corresponding specific Ring customers,” the site reported.
Citing unnamed sources, The Intercept reported that the Ukraine team was allowed to watch the video feeds so they could improve the company’s image-recognition software by identifying objects in imagery by tagging them.
“A second source, with direct knowledge of Ring’s video-tagging efforts, said that the video annotation team watches footage not only from the popular outdoor and doorbell camera models, but from household interiors,” The Intercept reported, adding that the process appears to still be in use at the company.
“The source said that Ring employees at times showed each other videos they were annotating and described some of the things they had witnessed, including people kissing, firing guns, and stealing.”

There is a small company (puri.sm) working on a phone that will have a PHYSICAL KILL SWITCH for both the camera and microphone. Basically the microphone is DEAD when that switch is opened.
Furthermore, the software on that phone is open source and does NOT report home.
Shipping in April, and yes, it will probably be a bit buggy at first, but I’ve pre-ordered one and I. CAN’T. WAIT.
An ammo box should work if you are wanting physical information security.
It should (assuming you don’t buy one of the faux plastic ones), but it’s awkward as hell carrying it around instead of just the phone. Besides which all the spyware apps will simply wait until you take the phone out of the box to report back home.

Android (Google!) recently changed gallery–the app you use to look at your pictures–to refuse to even start unless it has permission to look at your current location and contacts list. Why does it need that? Sure if you want to send a picture to someone, but what if all you want to do is look at them?
I found a different app for that.
Android is spyware, top to bottom.
I like the idea of a phone that allows you to stop the spying. But everyone else’s phone, ipad, car console, etc. is still listening in. Here is some food for thought.
Well the hope is, that more people will demand phones with these features. The librem 5 phone will be running Linux and that does have a learning curve, but hopefully someone will be willing to invest in making Linux truly easy for people to use.

Here’s my take. Having a Ring is great. Our local news is full of porch pirates and the like being caught on Ring. Awesome, right? Except…what good does it do to have pictures? I enjoy me some Amazing Polly from up North. She has a youtube channel and covers some interesting topics and has a pleasant delivery…she really seems like a good egg.

Not even a couple of minutes later, we turned from El Camino Real onto Stevens Creek Blvd. And there, on the right, was a Vietnamese restaurant. Next to an animal hospital. Half a mile later, same pairing.
Then again, correlation is not causation. But it sure spooked him…

One version of what our Q-tree might look like as a metaphor?
I came across this photo early last year while wondering what an image of the CTH might look like with Treepers sitting on their particular branch. I never got around to posting it there.
I first tried looking for a photo with people sitting in a tree. Nothing turned up that I thought was workable. I next looked for images of different types of birds in trees, like goldfinches and cedar waxwings, but nothing turned out there either. Some nice group photos on branches, but when a whole tree was shown they looked like small, indistinguishable blobs on it.
Doing a search on eagles, I settled on this one. It was taken in the Noosack River valley in Washington State. There are 55 eagles there.
What sold me on this image was a Q&A the photographer did on the background of the photo. An excerpt:
“(2) What shocked you about what the eagles were doing? What does that many birds sound like? What do you think brought them to the tree?
Having watched eagles often, in decent numbers, the sound is the most remarkable part. Typically, they gather around an area, communicating between each other, in their own family group, and as a whole group. Eventually one will become brave enough to start feeding. This is usually followed by more communicating and then more feeding. They communicate by shrills and screeches, some warbling, normally in a back and forth manner. In the area of this tree, a small branch of the main river flows, and is a prime area for breeding salmon. As the salmon breed and die, they pile up on the shore and in the river. As I watched the eagles for over three hours, it appeared that the location and height of the tree gave the eagles a great view of the area.”

Every year from December through February you can drive along the highway up river along the Skagit. The cottonwood trees are full of nests and Bald Eagles and yes, it looks just like that magnificent picture. It is a thrilling site. And what a fabulous picture to choose to represent us in our branches!

This is just up the Mississippi River from STL. Above and down to the confluence with the Missouri when the Mississippi gets REALLY muddy, bald eagles hang out most of the winter. Today, I’m sure they’re dodging ice floes since we got socked yesterday and last night with over 8 inches of snow, but no doubt the eagles will be there. The feeding is good. When I was working in non-profit and we had fairs of sorts, there was a rescue operation that used to bring the ones that were being rehabbed. Talk about big birds.

Trumpeter Swans are another bird that was nearly extinct by about 1920. However, they have managed to bring them back and they have come back strong, like the bald eagles. They have about a 12 foot wingspan, and they mate for life. They are spectacularly beautiful birds.

I remember a story I read in “Outdoor Life” back in the 1960’s that was about the Trumpeters. I think it was called, “The Man Who Fed the Trumpeters”.
It was a story set in rural British Columbia around the 1930’s, and on an inland lake. He was part of the effort to bring them back from extinction. But I remember the story also being as much about his life on the homestead in trying to scratch out a living, and his encounters with wild animals.
One of the few stories I can remember from years of reading “Outdoor Life”.

The author of the piece, J. Christian Adams, is interesting to read because he worked in the DOJ in the Civil Rights Division dealing with Elections and Voting. He said after Eric Holder came in, they moved out all the existing attorneys (so why I keep wondering can’t we do that?) and replaced them with the wildest of lefty radicals and were told to stand down on things like enforcing the part of the Motor Voter Act which means the DOJ is supposed to monitor the states to ensure they are cleaning up their voter rolls.
Thank heavens Judicial Watch has been making this a legal challenge since the DOJ isn’t doing squat.
I can totally see POTUS waiting to spring on this–if Congress succeeds in taking this power from the states–I can see him then signing an EO making national photo ID a requirement. Because Congress wouldn’t be overseeing the elections–that would be an EXECUTIVE branch function then…

A lot of gardeners here are planting butterfly friendly plants that are either hosts or nectar producing. My peppermint, actually, started to bloom and there were so many honey bees on it, I wouldn’t take off the flowers, and then the smaller butterflies came and ate. Will get another of those this year, or will split last year’s plant as it’s outgrowing its space.
This is fixable. However, it may well require volunteer work to make it happen.

I’m not sure where you are on the migration path, but for egg laying monarchs need common milkweed, other species need dill, rue and more. All species need nectar flowers: marigolds and zinnias are the easiest.

What we do know is the killer was not from one of the three cars in the accident that she had responded to but came up from behind among the large group to view the accident and may of fired off as many as 40 shots before calmly walking away. The think is, my Senators and Congress Critter are useless Commies so while I dutifully go through the motion of contacting them I know it does no good. Still, again, I do it.
But since I know it is useless I like to widen the net and make life miserable for others in Congress. You know, spread the wealth.
I work from a list and call so many a day and leave messages. Doesn’t take much time. May not do any good, but PDJT asked us to do it. So, I’ll do it.
