I’m intritued by “Far beyond political corruption/sedition.” So grand jury testimony goes beyond attempts to control a presidential election, trying to remove a sitting president, and lying? What other possibilities are there — human trafficking, blackmail, insider trading, drug smuggling, pedophilia, murder…

Process leading to expulsion
Presently, the disciplinary process begins when a resolution to expel or censure a Member is referred to the appropriate committee. In the House, this is the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct (House Ethics Committee); in the Senate, this is the Select Committee on Ethics (Senate Ethics Committee).
The committee may then ask other Representatives or Senators to come forward with complaints about the Member under consideration or may initiate an investigation into the Member’s actions. Sometimes Members may refer a resolution calling for an investigation into a particular Member or matter that may lead to the recommendation of expulsion or censure.
Rule XI (Procedures of committees and unfinished business) of the Rules of the House of Representatives states that the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct can investigate allegations that a Member violated “any law, rule, regulation, or other standard of conduct applicable to the conduct of such Member … in the performance of his duties or the discharge of his responsibilities”. The Senate Select Committee on Ethics has the same jurisdiction. The committee may then report back to their whole chamber as to its findings and recommendations for further actions.
When an investigation is launched by either committee, an investigatory subcommittee will be formed. Once the investigatory subcommittee has collected evidence, talked to witnesses, and held an adjudicatory hearing, it will vote on whether the Member is found to have committed the specific actions and then will vote on recommendations. If expulsion is the recommendation then the subcommittee’s report will be referred to the full House of Representatives or Senate where Members may vote to accept, reject, or alter the report’s recommendation. Voting to expel requires the concurrence of two-thirds of the members. This is set out in Article 1, Section 5, Clause 2 of the United States Constitution

Thanks for that info. I also found this, from the Constitution, Article I, Section 6:
“The Senators and Representatives…shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.”
So members of Congress can’t be arrested while their house of Congress is in session, except for treason, felony, and breach of the peace. But Congress isn’t in session when the government is shut down, so they are all vulnerable right now, I guess.
I would think that most of the charges that will be against congresspeople will be felonies, including treason. So whether they are in session or not is not a problem.

Treason is defined in the Constitution, not passed by Congress in the normal way. (The only crime so defined.)
So technically treason is not a felony. It’s in a separate legal class by itself.
Better expains why the Senate is always in session. Keeps them all protected from arrest.

I’m not sure what needs to happen for treason. The problem there is that we ARE in a stealth war with China, but there is no “declared’ war, so I’m not sure there can be treason with ChiFi. But there IS still a declared “war on terror”, so collaborations with AQ or any group legally determined at the time to be a terrorist group may be regarded as treason.
Espionage, OTOH, may work.

Yes. And it makes me wonder if “Treason” and “Breach of the Peace” must also be “originally interpreted” to include whatever was likely intended. Perhaps “Treason” should mean whatever THEY meant – not just the specific crime today which is currently a felony by modern definitions.

There are 9 religious organizations that have charities associated with them that take taxpayer dollars in order to settle “refugees” in heavily republican (red) districts, they even have been caught on a few occasions recently handing out information that tells the “refugees” how to register to vote. They also help get them set up in subsidized housing, get them on welfare and food stamps, and help them get subsidized medical care. And who funds that? The religious organizations? No, we the taxpayers do. I would really like to see all those organizations denied any sort of taxpayer funding – it’s enough that they don’t pay taxes, they shouldn’t also get paid with our tax dollars while we have no say about it. We don’t need any more Lewiston Maines or Detroit Michigans, or urban Minnesotas.
