The above pic was taken by a Hurricane Hunter plane from the Eye of Hurricane Dorian. Well……. that’s a Life Magazine photo. The power of nature is humbling. Video coming out of the Bahamas has been gut-wrenching.
Here are our regular warnings and updates from NOAA. We have copied the link address into the post. Thus, when NOAA updates a new “note”/warning, the post will automatically change to newest version.
Orlando, Florida is now under a tropical storm watch. The airport will close at 2:00am this morning. Ft. Lauderdale Airport will close at noon today. As far away as Charleston, SC, Interstate 126 will reverse lanes beginning at noon today. Time to get out of the way. South Carolina has already issued some mandatory evacuations/school closings beginning at noon tomorrow for over a half-dozen counties. Georgia’s Governor Kemp has also ordered mandatory evacuations and interstate lane reversals beginning at 8:00am.
Last night – At about 8:30pm on Sept 1st, the western wall made landfall on Grand Bahama Island. The dire warnings from the NHC remain the same, 185mph winds, gusts to 225mph, Barometric pressure has stabilized (no longer strengthening) at 915 millibars, moving west at 5mph, 15-23ft storm surge with waves on top of storm surge. Life threatening. Catastrophic. So far, no degradation in strength.
3:00AM UPDATE: Slight changes in structure of Hurricane Dorian. Slowing to TWO MILES PER HOUR, and slight decrease in wind speed. Gee whiz, it’s only 175mph now.
4:00AM UPDATE: Hurricane Dorian now moving at ONE MILE PER HOUR. Winds of 165mph.
10:00AM UPDATE: 160mph winds, pressure at 919 millibars, still moving westward at 1mph. ONE MILE PER HOUR.
10:30AM UPDATE: Governor DeSantis presser, most ports closed, Jacksonville port on situation Yankee (he sounded really cool when he said it). Northern part of he state has opened toll roads. De Santis is hands on, answered all questions from press, even obscure questions about particular generators. Hat tip to his wife who is doing a MASSIVE amount of social media about the storm.
Stunning timelapse video as Hurricane Dorian approaches Grand Bahama Island. The eye of Dorian is so large, the entire island may experience it.
Take a look at the lightning inside Dorian from the Hurricane Hunter plane. These pilots have nerves of steel.
There is nothing more beautiful than a burly utility lineman when he comes up the street to restore my power. Love these men, be kind to these men. They’re all a long way from home, their own families, to help your community when you need it most. At the Daytona Speedway, 3000 crews, 16000 linemen, from 34 states have already assembled. And this is only ONE of 24 staging areas. Wish we could buy them a round of beers. https://www.wfla.com/weather/tracking-the-tropics/3000-florida-power-and-light-crews-processed-at-daytona-international-speedway/
Ian Sears, NOAA is the brave guy who took the photo from inside the eye of Dorian.
Levi Cowan @tropicaltidbits is a grad student studying hurricanes and cyclones. His reporting rivals the NHC or NOAA, and if this guy doesn’t get a good job, we need to call the Director. Extraordinary work from this young man. Highly recommend a follow on Twitter and a hat tip to SadieSlays for finding him first.
The President arrived back at the White House and traveled for a Board Meeting with FEMA + calls to involved Governor’s teams.
Here is the Press portion of the FEMA meeting, including the President, necessary Cabinet officials, and call-ins from each Governor’s team.
Almost everyone who lives in the southeast has a family “plan” for hurricanes. An exceptionally good Hurricane Checklist can be found HERE: https://www.surfandsunshine.com/how-to-prepare-for-a-hurricane-with-hurricane-preparedness-checklist/
We can add things like: Make sure to do ALL laundry NOW and refill all medications. A well stocked, expanded, home first aid kit is a bonus, someone in your neighborhood will need it. An extra set of blades for a chainsaw is a Godsend. Bleach and clean all the tubs in your home and fill with water before the storm hits (if you’re staying). Right now, bake – cookies, brownies, granola bars for a healthy boost…… and share with your local fireman/police. Right now, FREEZE extra water in big containers using milk jugs/2 liter bottles, etc., to make big blocks of ice. Extra propane for the grill and a big pot to boil water.
Best personal hint: We took about 100 dish clothes/wash clothes and wet them with fresh water, added a few drops of bleach, sealed them in Glad Bags and put them in the freezer. In the aftermath, we used those towels everywhere.
Many residents are new to the state and we strongly encourage they prepare and/or rely on neighbors who are a little more experienced with hurricane preparations. KNOW your neighbors, you won’t get through the aftermath of a hurricane without help from a few friendly souls.
For this post, I’m going to leave the video links to you all, there are so many videos showing devastation in the Bahamas. Please feel free to add tips, tricks, memes, hints, and your prayers related to Hurricane Dorian.
Treepers, Thank you for your help. These posts have been a group effort.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like flying into the eye of a Cat 5 hurricane…
Here’s a very strange Q connection for you.
So when I hear the name “Dorian,” I think of the soap opera character Dorian Lord. The character, as it turns out, was created by Agnes Nixon. Agnes Nixon was the subject of some Q digs because her graddaughter is Maggie Nixon. Yes, THAT Maggie.
Moving on, Dorian Lord had quite the interesting story arc in the 2010s:
“After One Life to Live’s series finale on January 13, 2012, Dorian’s character continued to exist in continuity on sister soap, General Hospital. On the episode first aired on December 3, 2012, it is mentioned that Dorian is still a U.S. Senator and she’s on the Senate Intelligence committee, a role in which agents of the CIA refer to her as “the wicked witch of the Intelligence Committee.”
DORIAN IS THE WICKED WITCH OF THE INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE.
“When One Life to Live returned on April 29, 2013, it is said that Dorian has been involved in a scandal involving the CIA and the delaying of information to fellow committee members” Soap Central summarizes the plot as, “Dorian’s time in Washington was over soon after it began when she was accused of possessing classified CIA documents about illegal black sites. Dorian was forced to resign from the senate and she blamed Viki and her newspaper for the negative publicity.”

Pretty sure you meant to post this in the Open Thread.
no…this the DORIAN thread. 🙂
her post is tongue-in-cheek.
Dorian was SUCH a $itch!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a blast from the past, remember her from college days.
See you’re still working 24/7 Daughn,
Tell Big T we so appreciate his sharing you !
Thank you for pulling all the updates and tips together…
and for reminding us that we will get through this ……………..
and yes, many prayers for the Bahamas.
many prayers for the Bahamas.
I see the dense red area on the maps and find it hard to believe there are people in the middle of that. I saw on the last thread that one boy is dead and his sister is missing. I guess it was impossible for many to get out of the way of the storm. The people must be terrified. It’s heartbreaking.
First, I’d like to drop a comment about BARs. A millibar is 1/1000 of a bar. 1000 millibars = 1 bar. 1 bar = regular atmospheric pressure = about 14.504 psi. If you have a dive injury and go to a hyperbaric chamber, they’ll measure pressure in “fsw” — it takes 32.634 Feet of Sea Water to equal 1 bar of pressure. If you SCUBA overseas, your gauges frequently do psi and the fill stations frequently do bar.
To complicate matters further, all of these measurements frequently get offset against normal air pressure or vacuum. 0 bar = vacuum. 0 fsw = 1 bar. Psi in your bicycle tire is referenced off of normal air pressure, but psi in a vacuum chamber is referenced off of vacuum.
There’s also Pascals — the OFFICIAL pressure measure, which is 1/100,000 of a bar — and mm Hg, which is used in measuring blood pressure, which is about 1/750 of a bar.
ANYWAY, when you’re talking about 900 millibars, the air pressure is only 90% of the usual. If you wanted to climb a mountain to get to that level of air pressure, you’d have to climb about 4,000 feet. If you were standing on top of Mt. Everest, you’d have only about 300 millibars of air pressure, which is why you might have adverse health consequences without supplemental oxygen.
Now, do Torr.
😛
Torr are mmHg
Second, I want to share an observation regarding the situation in the Bahamas.
Both Abaco and Grand Bahama have large skinny sections that run east-to-west. Dorian’s hurricane-force winds (> 74 mph) extend about 45 miles from its center, making it 90 miles across. It is moving at about 5 mph. The eye is about 30 miles across. The eye has been moving west right across the skinny parts of Abaco and Grand Bahama.
Ninety miles divided by five miles an hour means that Dorian’s targets have 18 hours in the blender with true hurricane winds (longer if you count tropical storm conditions). That’s when winds first clock up over 74 mph to when they finally go below 74 mph. Somewhat conveniently, this evenly divides into three periods — on the leading side, in the eye, and on the back side. On the leading side, you have south-to-north winds ramping upward from 74 mph to 180+ mph (I’ve seen 220 cited) over the course of six hours; then, you get six hours of calm in the eye; which, then — like flicking a switch — turns into max force winds (180+ mph) from north-to-south……which then fade to 74 mph over another six hours.
If the eye does not pass over you, you have no calm — and the max winds slowly rotate until they point the other way. You may experience 180+ mph winds going west-to-east or east-to-west in-between.
We get this fed to us in such dry little factoids, but when you start to put things together — “90 miles across, 5 mph” — you start to see just how monstrous this storm really is. And when you look at half the disaster coming from one side and half coming from the other, “luckily sheltered behind this wall” starts to be a thin reed.
OMG. Drudge is now saying 2 mph. I can barely see from the tears in my eyes. 45 hours of hell. OMG.
Dear Lord, let this cup pass….
I’m feeling a bit more grounded now. Things have changed, and things can change again. The math of spinning Dorian on top of Grand Bahama for 45 hours is extreme, but Dorian can go visit DC at any time.
And NOW it’s only going 2mph.
TWO miles per hour.
OMG.
Kicked me in the gut, too. But maybe this is the turn.
Now, ONE mph.
Gheez.
See below at 4:20. Dorian’s westward progress had to end sometime, lest the storm go marauding on the mainland. While we certainly didn’t mean for it to stall and thrash the Bahamas, perhaps this is the moment when it starts travelling north and east.
And it wobbled south!
Despair is a sin, you know. Why are you urging me toward sin?
I have enough of my own.
It’s worrying. Makes me upset.
In my 20’s, I lived n Hollywood, between Miami and Ft Laud, high rise, right on the beach.
Cigarette boat to Bimini for lunch was 45 minutes, but then I was stuck with the guys who owned the boat, and they might get too drunk to come home.
Better option was the puddle jumper flight to Freeport. It was $29/round trip, and about once a month, it was only $19.
We used to go all the time.
Didn’t even need a passport back then.
We even went to garage sales in Freeport. It was so close…..
Great open markets, pineapples for $1, summer clothes, all kinds of goodies.
And the nightlife…….. wow.
To think about such a thriving place, obliterated, makes my heart hurt. The people were so grateful for the business. What will they do to recover?
Excellent choice on the Header Picture, Daughn!
😀👍👏
Yesterday’s Header Pic was great too!
I couldn’t do the pic of devastation.
We used to fly over to Marsh Harbor to stay with American doctor who had a modest vacation home. We’d take lots of medical supplies, samples of stuff accumulated from salesmen, etc. impromptu clinics and you can imagine how well we were treated by the people living there. Doors were never locked so we’d return home to find a pot of something yummy simmering on the stove, baskets of local fruit, etc.
We liked to take a boat over to Guana cay (Guana Grabber, a potent rum and fruit juice drink that lived up to its name!). Tiny, tiny island…probably wiped off the face of the earth after this storm.)
The Cone of Uncertainty is still uncertain as of this hour.

Mandatory evacs have begun on the east coast of Florida.

Okay, now third — a little bit about the mechanics of hurricanes.
We all know that hot air rises. That’s why you can have hot air balloons that float beautifully without any chemicals or special gasses.?crc=182522595
The same things happen at the center of a hurricane without the balloons. Air gets hot, and it rises to levels above other air, and spills over. It actually creates a “hump” in earth’s atmosphere, as observed from space, as air from the surface rises.
When that air from the surface starts heading upward, however, air from cooler areas rushes in to backfill the space. If this were 100% efficient, you’d never have 911 millibar hurricanes because the pressure would rapidly equalize. In fact, you’d never have hurricanes at all. But there is a particular inefficiency that totally screws the pooch.
If you took an imaginary earth and clamped an imaginary gel-like atmosphere on it, and spun it once per day, you’d notice that the atmosphere at the equator had to really move along. The circumference at the equator is about 40,000 km, and it would have to move that in 24 hours……so, about 1,667 kph. On the flip side, if you were standing on the pole, the atmosphere above you doesn’t have to move at all — it merely rotates. Wherever you are put your heat elevator on the globe, the backfill area closer to the equator will be moving faster around the planet than the backfill area closer to the pole — and this will cause a relative wind based on their difference in speeds. Since both backfill areas are trying to get to the same place, this will cause a spiral of wind where they attempt to square their differences.
This, BTW, helps explain why there are certain areas that breed hurricanes that are not on the equator — there’s little difference in speed between the equator and 5 degrees north…..
OTOH, there is a thing called the “Hebert Box” — between 15 degrees and 20 degrees north latitude — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebert_Box — that most dangerous hurricanes pass through. That’s where the backfill to the heat elevator spins up hurricanes.
Once you have the backfill winds spiralling, their rotation becomes an impediment to actually doing a backfill, and the pressure inside the eye drops…..which causes even more frenzied spiralling and fiercer winds.
To summarize, then…. Air over warm water rises. Air attempts to rush in to fill the loss — but, because it’s from different latitudes travelling at different speeds, it forms a whirlpool. The whirlpool keeps the loss from being completely filled which makes a further lack……which drives even more aggressive spinning.
There’s another thing that typically goes on, but I don’t get it well enough to try to explain it.
The forces that try to spin a cyclone or hurricane come from the differing velocities of replacement air, but they have to make way for the upwelling of heat that drives the whole kerfluffle, thus the eye, which doesn’t rotate. When the inner wall of the eye begins to slow, this may lead to a new eye forming just outside the old one. This leads to what is known as the “eyewall replacement cycle” — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyewall_replacement_cycle — the shorter form of which is (1) momentary stuttering [and lessening in force]; (2) significant widening of the storm; return to original force across a larger face.
Dorian hasn’t done this yet, which makes the storm much more nimble and focused.
This is not good…it probably means other parts of the island are under water too:
I’ve flown over the Bahamas. If you fly to Hawaii, they’re volcanos — that’s where they are. The Bahamas are sandbars — Dorian is going to change some maps.
It’s moving so slow…it’s basically just sitting there grinding away.
😟🥺
If it doesn’t particularly feel like heading West, perhaps it’d be more amenable to heading North?!??
My heart, hopes, and prayers for anyone on Grand Bahama. It’s disturbing to watch.
And uncover some shipwrecks!
I thought Bahamas sit on coral? Maybe I am wrong?
There’s a couple of limestone ridges, but a heckuva lot of sand. Coral isn’t, itself, a substrate, it has to build on something else — and it doesn’t build on sand.
way too close for any comfort…this monster needs to turn north…poor Bahamas, my God…unimaginable tormenting nightmare they’re enduring !
and it’s now coming very close to Florida..
9:45 am right now…and maybe I’m hallucinating from too much radar loop watching…but starting to see a slight…the slightest… wobble to the north ?
Livin’ on a prayer!
as of 10 minutes ago….radar loop…

just awful.
They just said on the WeatherChannel that it has “slowed down to 1 mph“.
😬😦
This is so bad.
real serious….
but…maybe…that will allow it more time to make the crucial TURN NORTH…?
Start with, “our beneficent God has halted Dorian’s westward march” — which, BTW, spares more Floridians than our friends, the Bahamans, who are getting massively hammered.
And pray that this harm is lifted from our friends, a Godly people, the Bahamans — and that they be comforted in their losses and healed from their sorrows.
And pray this storm is sent northward.
Northeastward would be better.
Right now, it would be a major relief if it just would move off the Bahamas.
Fort Pierce, Florida…yesterday…not particularly “festive”….
this a crucial moment …ominous and tense….what will this storm do ? west and south ???
GO AWAY DORIAN
until this thing actually (if ever !!) makes its TURN NORTH, every little wobble will mean something in the next hours…esp for Florida….
stay prepared !
At least the wind speed has decreased a bit, down to 165 mph…
.
The WeatherChannel is saying how remarkable it is for a CAT5 hurricane to just “stall out” like this.
5 am Advisory …NOAA…
THE TURN should be the next event with this.
Bahamas are being relentlessly tormented and decimated by this thing.

How politicians are handling Hurricane Dorian
Reacting to a natural disaster can be a make-or-break moment for a politician. Democratic strategist Tony Cignoli said, “People will always remember how you handled something like this. This goes to legacy.”
https://www.bostonherald.com/2019/08/31/how-politicians-are-handling-hurricane-dorian/
True. We had T-shirts and dartboards with Kathleen Blanco’s pic on them.
Ray Nagin was another one.
Interestingly, Obama was one of the ones who pushed the “blame Bush” theme after Katrina. On the ground, we all knew Blanco would not allow the Feds into Louisiana for three days after the Hurricane.
It changed everything about how Governor’s Declare a Natural Disaster – now they declare the disaster before the storm hits to allow the Feds to proceed with staging.
Hmmm.
Whatever happened to doing the right thing, because it was the right thing to do?????
I’ll bet the politicians in Puerto Rico are lining up for cash right now….
PRAYER FOR HOPE
Father God
We come to You humbly before the Throne of Grace – in the name of Jesus – we pray for Hope as we face an incomparable foe.
We ask You to quell our apprehension, fear, and trepidation for we know not what we will be required to do in the coming days.
We ask You to help us prepare physically, mentally, and spiritually to battle the forces of evil that are guiding this storm.
We ask You to assist us with our domestic animals – to calm them and bring them to safety.
We put our Hope solely in You – we believe Jesus is the Hope for the future – He has the power to calm and redirect this storm.
We put our Faith solely in You – we believe You want what is best for us – because You love us – we are not afraid.
We put our Trust solely in You – we believe in Your promise never to leave or abandon us in our hour of need.
We ask You protect the President, his family, our country, and our friends and families – put a hedge of protection over all of them.
We plead the Blood of Jesus over all in the path of this evil storm – protect them from all danger, hurt, and/or harm.
We ask You take this storm in Your Mighty Hands – and cast it out to sea – leaving all in its path safe and secure.
We ask You take hold of the wind – the water – and the power behind this storm – and reduce its hold over the land.
We ask You empower Your people – to do as Your Son asked them – to love one another as He loved us.
We pray the Lord’s Prayer – mindful that You care for us – knowing you will provide what we need – when we need it – by the Power of Your Spirit.
We acknowledge Your unconditional Love for us – and we believe Your Love will sustain us.
We ask it all in the Precious and Holy Name of Jesus – Amen.
Amen.

5 ways to wash your hands when running water is unavailable
September 2, 2019
by Zoey Sky, Natural News
https://www.sgtreport.com/2019/09/5-ways-to-wash-your-hands-when-running-water-is-unavailable/
Before SHTF, you need to consider one important aspect of hygiene and sanitation: hand washing. But how can you wash your hands if you run out of water? (h/t to PrimalSurvivor.net)
The simple act of hand washing is essential for preventing the spread of diseases and infections, especially during a large-scale natural disaster that may cut off your access to water.
Germs like Salmonella, E. coli O157, and norovirus that cause diarrhea can spread respiratory infections and hand, foot, and mouth disease. These germs come from human and animal feces.
Germs can also get transferred to your hands after you use the toilet or after handling raw meats, which have invisible amounts of animal feces on them. When these germs get onto your hands, they can be passed from person to person and spread illness.
[Excerpt] Read more at the link above…
Great post … very good information … 🤨👍❤️
Glad you found it useful, nikki – hope and pray others do as well – * Smile *
Yes very good info … practical and will help keep people from getting sick … ❤️

A dispenser of hand sanitizer is always good to keep around.
Yes, and Gail added that to her good ideas – Thanks, andy!!!!
I was just thinking about that.
We have a well and the electric goes out — frequently. Nothing like soaping your hands and having NO WATER…
Costco, Sam’s club and other places have these large bottles of ReaLemon that I use for making sugar-free lemonade.
I never toss these bottles. Since they have an inset that restricts the flow to a very small stream they are great to leave at all my sinks, in the vehicles… as an emergency hand washing water supply. You can use a turkey skewer to pry the insert out of the top of the bottle and then pop it back in.
Another handy container I recycle is the large size liquid laundry detergent bottles. I generally have at least 3 or 4 in each truck so my ponies ALWAYS have water from home to drink. These are even better for hand washing because you can control the flow of water better IF you have someone to help.
……….
A KEY to conserving water is to mix up your soapy water ahead of time. Apply a little of the soapy water scrub and then rinse with the clear water. That way you do not wast a lot of water trying to get the excess soap off. Another trick is to rinse the gunk off your hands with clear water and then use hand sanitizer to sanitize.
Last, if water is really tight, use a wet soapy cloth to clean your hands, wipe with a dry towel AND THEN add a little clear water, scrub again, then rinse.
Great tip, Gail!
Absolutely wonderful ideas, Gail – Thanks so much! Am sure they will help many when the time comes…God Bless You!!!
Big thank you Daughn for this hurricane thread … awesome information
Prayers for everyone and their families/loved ones and friends and the people providing essential life saving services … protection, safety and stay healthy during and after this storm …
In Jesus name amen
It’s such a small world.
I lived in this small Mississippi town from about 6 months old to about 4 1/2. Was baptized in the local Pres Church, same place where my grandparents attended, grandpa was a deacon, dad was a deacon, I was married, and son was baptized. Dad’s career took us to Chicago and then New Orleans. My career added Manhattan and Miami…… but I came home again to settle and raise children here.
As a little one, my babysitter was Charlotte, with a younger sister Becky, who was my best friend. Her parents lived next door and became “Aunt” Mignon and “Uncle” Bob. Years later, Charlotte married Robert, who became the local Fire Chief.
In 1994, three weeks before we bought the B&B, our region had a debilitating ice storm. Not forecasted, struck in the overnight hours, and took out 7 million telephone/power poles. We went without power for 10 days, and some regions went without water and power for 6 weeks. It was a humbling and life altering experience.
At first light after the ice storm struck, 7 men met in the parking lot of my soon to be husband’s “shop”. The Mayor, Head of Maintenance for the city, Robert the Fire Chief, Steve-owner of a large farm, Jimmy-owner of a local oil company, Cajun-owner of a local truck stop, and my “boyfriend”-owner of a large construction company. I stayed in the truck with the window rolled down so I could hear them (cuz I was the girl).
What followed was the best example of emergency planning I’ve ever seen. I’ve lived in major cities all my life, but FEMA had nothing on these guys.
Our most urgent need was fuel for the water tower. The Boys at city maintenance had to feed the generator every four hours. If we lost fuel, we would lose water pressure for the whole town. Husband’s electricians tapped the fuel tanks at the local oil company to raid fuel for the water tower and city vehicles (the ladies kept manual records of how much fuel). Water POURED out of the water tower for days but we never shut off that pump….. We were the only township in about a 35 mile radius who kept their water pressure. We also tapped the fuel tanks at the truck stop (again, manual records kept by the ladies). We needed diesel fuel for heavy equipment to clear roads.
Farmers (Steve) had a sat phone, and quickly we figured out that interstates were closed because of fallen trees for about 35 miles south and the 30 miles north, into Memphis metro. Utility crews (head of Entergy, which was the power company for our 9 states, was from our town and had a serious schoolgirl crush on my husband) and DOT would try to approach us from the south. The farmers, with plentiful fuel and plenty of heavy equipment, cleared almost 18 miles of highway until we met DOT in the middle.
Regular men opened up the roads. I saw farm combines pulling utility crews through fields, because their trucks would get stuck……. but we had to restring the grid. Wow……. that wouldn’t happen in Miami…….. amazing to see.
The town, however, had a huge problem restoring power because we needed meter bases. Fallen limbs snapped lines and tore the electric boxes off of homes. If the utility crew came to your street and you did not have a functioning meter box, they would pass you by (biggest problem in superstorm sandy). Well……… to solve the problem and save time…… my future mother-in-law came up with an idea. We had the electricians and we had utility crews, we just needed more meter bases and supplies, …….. right?
Another construction company owner friend had been in Daytona for bike week. We called our electrical supply company in Jackson, MS. My MIL rented a semi truck, bought a truckload of electrical supplies on our accounts, guaranteed by a handshake from the Mayor. The Mayor, under emergency declaration added the cost of a meter box (if needed) to the regular city utility bill. Thus, about 20 electricians worked ahead of the utility crews, home by home, to restabilize the town………. Think of how easy it would have been to do the same thing for SuperStorm Sandy…. but they didn’t. We did.
The guys secured the hospital generators and convalescent center first, then opened churches and necessary city buildings. Women and ladies groups took over the kitchens. I’ve never seen such incredible food. They swiftly set up cots, bedding, fluffy pillows, and an extravagant laundry to wash items for the utility crews and working firemen/police/city guys/farmers who could not get home. I’ll never forget the bathroom they set up for the crews…. the ladies put up fancy hand towels for the men…… only in the south to we follow proper protocol in an emergency.
We opened the liquor store in honor of the utility crews……. (again, manual accounting). Bank officers opened a side “desk”, again, manual accounting.
Everyone in town was involved and everyone worked together. About 4 days into the disaster, a Red Cross Director showed up. Someone pointed him to me. He was about 5’6″, maybe 120lbs, and squirrely. In fact, he wanted to BORROW a 25K generator from me. What???? No. Not there to offer assistance, he needed help from us. I was not happy. I never saw the Red Cross again…… they left.
The grocery stores could not open, laws against it, selling meat or dairy after the compressors went off in a power failure. No problem, we had food as locals opened their pantries. I was put in charge of the primary kitchen. I laugh…… because there was no way I was “in charge”. Those elder women knew exactly what to do.
All throughout the disaster, Robert the Fire Chief was in constant communication with state/utility, and solving problems. He slept at the firehouse. We became closer than ever before. We were all wet, cold, dirty, snotty, but we were all there together.
Because of the way our town reacted to a disaster, Robert was promoted to Head of Mississippi Emergency Management under Governor Haley Barbour. And then, Hurricane Katrina hit………… Mississippi’s stellar performance during Hurricane Katrina served as a stark contrast to the failure of Louisiana’s response. Eventually, Robert and Charlotte retired young and came home for a while, but Robert was too valuable and called back out of retirement. We saw Robert and Charlotte at the first Inaugural party for Governor Phil Bryant. As we danced, we laughed about how much different we looked……. not covered in mud and sweat. Underneath the evening wear, we were all still the same as that early morning meeting at my husband’s shop.
Robert was then elected President of all 50 states Emergency Management teams. Robert is one of the best “out of the box” thinkers we’ve ever known, and he’s overloaded with common sense. Still for him to be elected was a big honor for our small town hero.
And guess where Robert is today? ………… He’s in Florida right now. If you want the best in the business, you got him. Robert is our guy.
All our love to Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas,
Daughn
YAY – a Daughn247 Mini-Story!!!!
When I think about how hard those men worked…… gosh, it was over 25yrs ago….. it still makes me tear up. Honorable men, the best of us all.
Sounds like the women worked just as hard! :8-)
I already feel better about Florida ! Go Robert……………
Thanks for your uplifting personal story Daughn…………. I sure need that this a.m., can hardly bear to look at devastation in Bahamas, can’t image how they are enduring with lingering Dorian.
Big take-away …………… locals working together, out of the box, can get through a disaster faster and more efficiently than ‘experts’ from out of town………….. so glad you stood up to the Red Cross guy.
After headphones no this story O got $50 says Robert s directly/indirectly responsible for all those pre-positioned electrical crews/trucks at Daytona Speedway and elsewhere.

Even with the slight weakening – Dorian is still very dangerous!

Here’s a brave (or foolish) man and wife who are riding out the storm in their newer constructed 15 ft. elevated home with hurricane impact windows. I think he said he’s on Grand Bahama just over the bridge. He’s posting on a FB page called Bahamas News and Events. Dang it’s hard to watch the destruction and I’m scared for everyone riding out this storm. Prayers! https://www.facebook.com/groups/bahamanews/
I am hearing more and more how devastating this hurricane is. Yes it is but I have to believe there have been hurricanes like this before?
I always wonder building Florida up the way it has been all along the cost that makes the impact of the hurricane even worse?
People here all want to retire in Florida but how many people can Florida take? They are not rich people and take all their savings never thinking they could loose it all.
Where will all the people go to evacuate? So many older people some do not drive any longer. So many in trailers and not stable housing.
My daughter in law’s father bought last year a small house in Florida he moved from West Virginia because of the winter.
I know so many people who moved south wanting to be on a beach and fish and enjoy life. I pray for all of them that they are safe.

One of the scariest clips we have gotten so far. This person is trapped in the attic because water flooded their entire house, and now water has broken into the ceiling from outside and it is rushing into the roof. #HurricaneDorian #Dorian
Terrifying.
Dear Lord, hope the house holds.
Mar-A-Lago evacuated!!!
Was wondering if they would. SCIF is there.
Perhaps only staff is evacuating… security remaining ?
Mar-a-Lago has withstood many a hurricane, right ?
https://qz.com/1072172/hurricane-irma-mar-a-lago-and-trump-have-a-long-history-with-hurricanes/
Astounding the junk news people write. They have no clue what damage there was at Mar A Lago and how much the cost was when Trump organization got insurance pay out.
I remember pictures from the last time trees needed to be replaced and also carpeting. Damage is not going t be then that of a little flea trap.
I hope and pray Mar A Lago does not get much damage and all other homes survive as best as they can. Saving lives is the most important.

Home in Grand Bahama is flooded up to 10ft, they all had to run upstairs where they are now trapped. #HurricaneDorian #Dorian
During Katrina there were aerial photos of hundreds of houses in water up to the pitch in the roof.
Many in other areas were rescued from their roofs after the storm passed, having survived in the attic with water up to their chins and small amount of air above.
Hurricanes are a byotch ! Esp if you stay with your property, which far too many do.
My husband keeps telling me “it is always the same just different location where the hurricane does damage.” He said “always the same people riding out the storm thinking they can fight nature.”
To him here are no surprises.
I am taken in to the mess every time because it is so foreign to me. The destruction of tornadoes hurricane and flooding just tears on your heart because of lives and also think of animals and wildlife.
You’d think people in hurricane zones would have learned from Hurricanes Katrina and Andrew. Those Cat 5 storms caused many needless deaths due to people not heeding evacuation calls.
Same with bushfires

Well, isn’t that special?
Time to find a new job I’d say.
Disney is hoping all the witness are now unavailable ie dead and the evidence from little st James has washed away
Epstein was supposed to have done a rush purchase of an industrial concrete mixer right before his last bust…..supposedly to backfill all the subterranean facilities and seal away evidence. It’d be very ironic if everything else on the island got washed away by Dorian except the concrete.
Yep I’ve seen drones photography of a concrete mixer unloading at his place. Don’t know who’s doing these drone videos but doesn’t look like a backyard drone. Also putting them on the net. Scaring the game
Anonymous conservative has a lot of these drone videos oh his blog
Yup, all that evidence, all that DNA — could have been washed away into oblivion. Instead, entombed in concrete, it waits for someone to really want to access it…..
Uh, Oh.
Sharknadoes!
That must be frightening, andy!!!
Well yeah! Those things can decapitate you as they fly through the air.
I’ve seen it before in one of the movies!
😉
Yikes! Art imitating life?
Yeah, I heard the tides were scheduled to be higher than normal even before the storm. Added to the storm surge, the coastal residents can expect lots of flooding.
Could be worse – hoping and praying – the mighty Hand of God will whip that monster out to sea – in the name of Jesus – I pray – Amen.
Beware of things that bite.
I always steer clear of my ex-wife.
Good one!
In unusually wet weather, the land snakes will be heading for higher, dryer ground. Last Fall, after a wet spell, we had 6 timber rattler sightings in our small senior citizen low lot line neighborhood. It was scary. I saw two and heard another one while I was working in my yard near the woods.
Oh, my!!!
What a good woman
LOL! Hope they’re all housebroken or she’s gonna have a real problem on her hands.
And hope she has a large, fenced backyard.
Have no fear – the director of Bark-eting will keep it all under control 😀

Actually, great that someone can do this. Hope she and they stay safe and dry!

Wow. We used to go to those beaches along with Longboat Key back in the 70s and 80s. Stopped going when high rises made their debut.

“Stationary”…… Can you guys believe this? Monster storm, and it’s not moving.
Can’t stop thinking of the people stuck on Grand Bahama. They’ll come out of this with something akin to PTSD.
Not moving.
Omph
ZERO.
Unreal.
That’s really heartbreaking. The only plus, and not much of one, is that sustained winds are down to 145 mph. That makes it a cat 4, if I’m not mistaken. But still a monster.

Hmm, does it pay well? I could use a million dollars.
Hardly, andy – you planning on impersonating Jesus? Bad idea!

Do you have any idea how many fake cthulhus there are out there? Way too many….
None

Comparing storm sizes…..
Does size really matter?
For the people in the Bahama’s more about how long it lasts. In this case, too long.

Latest I could find on the net hour ago:
Forecasters said at 7 p.m. on Monday that the hurricane was stationary, even as its winds swirled at 145 m.p.h. and gusts reached 170 m.p.h. After moving toward the islands over the weekend, it came to a halt on Monday evening above them. The hurricane moved just 14 miles from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m, and sat about 105 miles off the coast of Florida.
The storm was expected to continue drubbing the islands — which have a combined population of about 77,000, the majority of whom live on Grand Bahama — through Monday night, forecasters said, before resuming its course toward the Atlantic coast and turning up the coast.
Dorian is a nightmare!
Very interesting choice of words from the Prime Minister of the Bahamas:
“The Bahamas is presently at war and being attacked by Hurricane Dorian, he said. “And yet, it has no weapon at its disposal to defend itself during such an assault by this enemy.”
https://thenassauguardian.com/2019/09/02/pm-we-are-at-war-with-hurricane-dorian/
I think he is right on target – and knows exactly what he is saying and why – but, hey – that is just me.
I feel so sorry for this man. His country is being destroyed and he is powerless to help his people. It’s awful.
Oh, I do, too, daughn – and worse yet – if this was engineered to do so – the destruction was so massive – the reconstruction will take years – Thank God – we have a builder in the WH who can help!
It was not “engineered”.
Coincidence? I think not…
Man made global warming?
Not buyin’ AGW on this. SOLAR change steep slope I can buy, but it will take years of data (which we will get through the 2020’s and 2030’s) to really prove it solidly.
The thing that is weirding me out right now is the full realization that what the AGW crowd (and that includes the fake Pope) seems to be doing right now is arguing for ANTI-PREPARING humanity for the deep cold in the 2030’s. That is total WTF territory. The idea of adding ARTIFICIAL VOLCANIC (Mount Pinatubo) technology (cool through atmospheric chemical and particulate injections) for 10 years to MEET the ’30’s freeze – it is LITERALLY psychotic science.
They want to deterraform the planet. It’s straight out of an Outer Limits episode. I’m just draggin’ my jaw.
TL;DR – looking less like a HOAX and more like SABOTAGE.
POTUS has remained skeptical of Category 5 storms since 2017:
“Not the first time Trump said he’s never heard of a Category 5
Trump has previously indicated several other times that Category 5 hurricanes are unprecedented weather events that either he or others had never heard of or witnessed.
In the days between the landfalls of Hurricane Irma and Maria, he said he “never even knew” they existed and said days later that “people (in Puerto Rico) had never seen anything like” the storm.
In October 2017, Trump claimed “nobody has ever heard of a (Category) 5 hitting land,” and earlier this year, he again said he had never heard of a hurricane of that intensity.”
Source:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/trump-doesnt-think-hes-ever-even-heard-of-a-category-five-hurricane-four-have-threatened-the-us-since-he-took-office/ar-AAGER8Y
The above was prompted by this particular comment:
“President Donald Trump said Sunday that he’s “not sure that (he’s) ever even heard of a Category 5” hurricane, despite four such storms having threatened the US since he took office.
“We don’t even know what’s coming at us. All we know is it’s possibly the biggest. I have — I’m not sure that I’ve ever even heard of a Category 5. I knew it existed. And I’ve seen some Category 4’s — you don’t even see them that much,” Trump said at a briefing with officials at FEMA’s headquarters in Washington, DC.
“But a Category 5 is something that — I don’t know that I’ve ever even heard the term other than I know it’s there. That’s the ultimate, and that’s what we have unfortunately,” he added, in reference to Hurricane Dorian.”
“Four have threatened the US since he took office” – “nobody ever heard of a Category 5 hitting land”
This is a nothing burger argument – they have to have something to discredit him – to call it a day – Stupid
I think POTUS is expressing his disbelief that there could be such a storm cat as 5, in other words, have one actually manifest. And he recognizes that there have been 4 since he took office. POTUS is as skeptical as some of us are that nature has produced so many Cat 5 hurricanes, especially so close together.
Duchess I think you are misreading “argument” here…………… Sadie is posting his comments at FEMA meeting. I read that POTUS is telling the Cabal that he thinks they’re screwing with the weather. Just my two cents of course. ymmv
We have been heading into solar minimum for the past couple of years. Should bottom out in 2020. The changes in the sun will produce major chances to earth’s weather. This storm was intensified from two earth facing coronal holes that produced big time solar wind that impacted out atmosphere.
Expect more crazy weather this winter. While all the media was focused on big heat in western Europe this summer, they ignored the record cold in Russia at the same time. Wavy jet stream with north to south movement vice the typical west to east movement will create havoc.
We are in for some wild times as the sun goes quiet for the next few years. Solar minimum of 2028-2032 is expected to be brutal based on historical trends. Overall trend is cold.
No, not at all, pr – I agree with you – I just do not like it when they treat him like he is some kind of moron – I understand his words perfectly – why can’t they? Or maybe, they heard him – and they don’t like it one bit!
Remember – this is MSN on the attack, too – when have they ever said anything positive about our President? Whenever, I see one of their links – I am wary of anything in the article.
BREAKING: Lanes on I-26 from Summerville, South Carolina, east towards I-526 are being reversed to accommodate evacuations – SCDOT
I have family here, on the IOP and in Myrtle Beach area… they are waiting until tomorrow to see what’s going on with Dorian. Glad to see some folks are evacuating already.
I live further inland, but we have rec’d heavy rain and winds with some hurricanes in the past. Have done an inventory of items needed for emergency, shopped today for more canned goods etc. Since we’re in the woods we have lost power during a bad thunderstorm or ice storm, have a well, so electricity goes, no water. But we’ve prepared for that. Cars are filled with gas (well, the tanks anyway !), we have cash on hand.
When I was out today I shopped several places and bottled water was already sold out at some places.
We’ll be fine ……………. coastal family members too… we’ve all been there, know the drill.
It’s the folks in the Bahamas I pray for………… and Florida.
We have lots of Qtreepers in Florida and on eastern seaboard ………….. hoping y’all will ck in and let us know how you are, we do worry you know.
Felice, please stay safe………

It’s understandably not getting much attention, but Juliette went from tropical storm to monster category 3 hurricane in less than 24 hours today. Fortunately, it’s not likely to effect land, but the rapid intensification is notable.

Microwave machines are intensifying it?
Ok….answer me this….
If this thing is being manipulated, how come Trump hasn’t directed the US Navy SEALS and other mil assets to take out said machines??
Because…..get this…..if THIS guy and folks like Sadie know it’s true, so does POTUS.
And if POTUS hasn’t taken these machines out, then that means he is in on it.
Chew on THAT.
This has nothing to do with PT – this has to do with people against whom he is working – he has already taken out the chemtrail machines – our skies are blue – our clouds are real – and our air is clean – our skies are no longer murky – haven’t you noticed? He has reversed the effects of these monsters – however, there is still much to do – he cannot reverse everything in 2.5 years –
I am not chewing on anything – this is real – and there are still enemies everywhere who seek to destroy America and PT with it.
How do you know he isn’t working on it? I believe he is – and I believe there will be less destruction if he can manage to foil their plan.
Reminder that President Trump re-established Space Command late last week after Dorian was forecast to wallop the US. Maybe this is one reason why we need Space Force so badly?
I talked to one guy yesterday who told me that Dorian is going to beat hard on China’s covert sub base in the Bahamas.
And that’s all I have on that!
Heard that, too, michael – imagine it is pretty much destroyed.
On that note, I’ve wondered if the reason why Tyndall AFB was destroyed by Hurricane Michael is because it was severely compromised somehow. We don’t even need to delve into weather warfare theories here (although it was a very bizarre storm). White hats could have demolished it during the storm, and blamed the damage on the storm. The public would be none the wiser.
At this point, I’m not ruling out anything. Pontifex shilling for immediate “climate action” – meaning Khmer Rouge Year Zero / Green New Stone Age / Terraforming against Global Greening – the whole thing is madness.
Frankly, Q is the only thing making sense.
