That probably wasn’t the best way for her to say it.
When I was a child, my grandmother was a deacon in the Presbyterian church. I don’t know how that could have happened, because according to God’s Word, no woman qualifies to be a deacon, and it’s not vague or ambiguous.
It’s certainly ‘progressive’ (and my Grandma was conservative!), but it’s certainly not according to God’s Word.
Many years later, when I began searching for the truth, and eventually found a congregation of a church that follows and practices God’s Word, the subject came up about family members who came before me, who might have been in error, and what their standing with God might be.
The way I remember it being explained to me is that only God knows a man’s (or woman’s) heart, and it is God Who will judge, and He is both merciful and righteous. God will decide, and it is out of our hands.
But either way, knowing the truth of their error now, would they want us to follow their error for the sake of ‘family tradition’? Or would they want us to follow the Lord in spirit and in truth?
If the position was reversed, what would we want for our children and grandchildren — to follow error, or truth?
We have a very good and applicable passage in God’s Word on this very subject.
What did the rich man say?

The rich man first asked for relief from his immediate torment. The very next thought on his mind was concern for his loved ones who were still alive, who still had time and opportunity to be saved.
He implored Abraham to send Lazarus, to prove the afterlife to his family, so they would turn to the truth.
What did Abraham say?
Abraham said they have God’s Word, that is all they need, let them read it.
The rich man said his family would not hear Moses or the prophets, i.e., they would not read or believe God’s Word. But if someone like Lazarus, who was dead, went back to show them, they would believe and repent.
Abraham understood, but observed that if they will not believe God’s Word, they will not be persuaded, even if one rose from the dead.
Today we have both.
We have God’s Word, AND Jesus rose from the dead.
I hope, though admittedly without good Scriptural cause, that my Grandma is in a better place. All things are possible with God, and He is loving and merciful.
If she is in a better place, I am 100% certain she would tell me not to follow her error, but to follow the truth of God’s Word.
And if she is not, I am also 100% certain that like the rich man, she desperately hopes that I will not follow her error, but follow the truth.
So either way, those who loved us and who have gone on before us — knowing what they know now — would want us to follow the Lord in truth, and not the practices or traditions of men, which our loved ones may have done in error.

Secondly, if you are familiar with your Bible, and you are a member of a faithful church, this scenario is a perfect opportunity to inquire about her beliefs and practices, and compare them to what God’s Word actually says, to see (and show) whether those things are so, according to the example given in Scripture (cf. Acts 17:11).
If you are a member of a faithful church (of Christ – Romans 16:16, of God – 1 Cor 1:2, of the Firstborn – Heb 12:23], that is an opportunity to invite her to the Lord’s church.
As Philip said to Nathanael, ‘Come and see‘. (cf. John 1:46)

This turned out to be an interesting thing. I’m sorry about the delay. I started the reply, and before I knew it, it was several pages long.
So I cut most of it, and spared you 😁
My thought was to post the website address of the Bible study website which originally put me in contact with a faithful congregation near my home (it turned out there were 4 or 5 congregations within reasonable driving distance).
It is a non-denominational church (there are no denominations in the Bible), and it is organized according to Scripture, so each congregation is autonomous, but in fellowship with other faithful congregations — just as the congregations in the New Testament.
If you wanted to know the specific congregation where I am a member, I am happy to tell you, but it would be best to do so privately, maybe through a direct messaging thing on Gab, if that is up and running now. I’m glad to tell anyone I recognize as a regular participant here, but it would be best to find a way to do so privately.
I did want to find some way to show people that there are, in fact, LOTS of faithful congregations all across America, and in many parts of the world. Probably a lot more than most people would think.
So I checked another Bible study website I am familiar with, which is run by a member of a congregation in Canada. He has a very interesting search engine, and it’s global: http://www.bible.ca/directory/seek.php?type=church
In addition to entering a zip code or country in the search box, you can also click on a section of the map of the world, and see how many (or if any) congregations of the Lord’s church are in that part of the world.
If you click on England (for example), you might set the search distance (upper right hand corner) to 1,000 miles, to see churches in other nearby countries. Or check Saudi Arabia, where of course there are none. Or parts of Africa, some parts have several congregations, while other places unfortunately have none.
If you are in the United States, it’s probably easiest to just enter your zip code in the search box, but it’s also interesting to click on “USA”, and then click on your state on the pop-up map, and then zoom in or out, change the distance, etc., to get a better sense of how many congregations are in your area.
This is the same website Wolfmoon once referenced with regard to some aspect of Christian church history, and this particular website is very useful in that regard. It covers a lot of subject areas. I pointed out at the time how surprised I was that of all the websites in the world, Wolf stumbled onto and referenced a website that is run by a member of Christ’s worldwide church.
Scott, thank you. Agree about nondenominational congregations. I really don’t even like the word “church” very much. In his original translation of scripture from the original languages, Tyndale didn’t use it. Wonder if you are familiar withthe church in London where Charles Spurgeon preached, the Metropolitan Tabernacle.

I am aware that Charles Spurgeon was a very well known preacher from the 1800s and associated with the Baptist church.
My original reason for knowing about him came from learning about the leaders or founders of all of the ‘main’ denominations, which was taught (including a workbook / study book I still have) to our congregation. It was almost like a ‘comparative religion’ class (except focusing exclusively on denominations that self identify as Christian).
It was very interesting to learn about the major doctrinal differences between Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists, Lutherans, Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, etc., and the the people and events which influenced each.
I am also familiar with Charles Spurgeon because of his strong Biblical and historical stance against instrumental music in worship, along with the founders and/or influential leaders of nearly every denomination, including:
Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Eusebius, Augustine, Chrysostom, Thomas Aquinas, Luther, Erasmus, Calvin, Beza, Spurgeon, Wesley and Clarke, et al.
Musical instruments were authorized for worship in Judaism, but had no part in Christian worship until they were introduced by the authority of men, centuries after the New Testament was written. I also have many supporting quotes from various secular sources (Music Encyclopedias) as well as a Catholic Encyclopedia.
Here are Spurgeon’s comments on the subject:

This has happened with nearly all of them. Their founders/leaders were all adamantly opposed to musical instruments in worship, on Scriptural and historical grounds, and yet nearly every one of them today has instrumental music in worship.
Ignoring history, ignoring their own founders, ignoring God’s Word.
Musical instruments in worship is only one of many errors that are pervasive today, but it is a great example for study, because the activity (musical instruments in worship) is undeniable, i.e., a congregation either HAS musical instruments in worship, or it does NOT.
There’s no middle ground, there’s no fudging, no hemming or hawing.
It’s black and white.
It may not seem like it should be a ‘big issue’, but it’s the principle at stake that matters. If one corruption is allowed, then how will the next corruption be prevented or stopped, without the charge of hypocrisy, i.e., ‘you allowed such and such activity based on no Scriptural Authority before, so how can you refuse this next new thing?”
Churches have split over the subject of musical instruments in worship — not because people don’t like music or instruments — but because it is an addition to Christian worship for which their is no authority in Scripture.
This is almost always the source of division and/or subversion of the Lord’s church.
It is those who want to add to Christian practice or belief without Authority in God’s Word to do so, and those who want to subtract, i.e., stop doing something which the Authority of God’s Word says we should be doing.
Those who want to ‘add’ or ‘subtract’ are continually at war with those who adhere to the Authority of God’s Word, no different than secular ‘progressives’ are always the provocateurs and agents of ‘change’, constantly at war with traditionalists and conservatives.
Musical instruments in worship is only one progressive subversion/corruption among many. It has become so commonplace that I suspect most people are no longer even aware that it was ever a source of controversy.
A nun did relief duty in a classroom of elementary kids when their teacher was sick. She had no lesson plan so thought she’d ask them what they wanted to do when they grow up. This went well with sally wanting to be a doctor and bill a policeman. Finally they got to Alice who said she wanted to be a prostitute. The nun fainted on the spot. All the kids gathered round and when she regained consciousness she asked Alice in a quavering voice what she had said. Alice repeated that she wanted to be a prostitute at which the nun breathed a sigh of relief and said oh thank god I thought you said Protestant

My great grandfather was a minister for five churches, but never learned to drive. So my great grandmother did learn. They were able to put money together to purchase four wheels so he could preach every Sunday at five places of worship…Dutch Reformed.
My family background has afforded me to be baptized as a Methodist, schooled as a Congregationalist, confirmed as a Methodist, and current member of the 5th Avenue Presbyterian Church across from Trump Tower. And I currently attend services at yet another Dutch Reformed church and the non-denominational Christian services at the Cadet Chapel on the base of West Point.
Oh, and my father was a soloist for a reformed synagogue in CT years ago. I used to attend once in awhile after work. The rabbi there was wonderful!!!
As far as I am concerned…it can be all hands on deck with Our Lord and Jesus Christ! Old Testament and New! And it doesn’t matter who!

We moved… A LOT! So I was confirmed Anglican Catholic, went to the Presbyterian church as a teen, the Catholic church in college (They had a very inspiring priest) and married a Methodist in a Lutheran Church.
In each town we went to each church in the town, listened to the preaching, and chose the church that had the best preacher. The one who ‘spoke to us’
