True diversity is something you almost have to grow up with. I did. As my sister puts it, our block in the 70s was a sociologist’s wet dream. We had EVERY race, and multiple cultures all in one spot. (Well, maybe not Islam, but all the rest for sure, including Buddists.) We respected the boundries, and accepted the differences.
It was a different time. At the same time, none of it was forced.
That’s the difference.
Correct! It was Brooklyn, Queens and Freehold High School for me. (Yes, that Freehold High School – you can picture the local dances right?) Everyone had all kinds of friends. We were even closed for the Jewish holy days. Diversity used to be something that never crossed your mind.
When i was a kid in l.a. my friends were the rainbow but my black friends and I got on best. A good friend lived in Compton and we would play without fear. I still have a pic of us with our arms around each other at Disneyland. Technically I was born in the hood and have more street cred than most poseurs now. My point is, you cannot tell a persons character by their skin but some situational awareness is key to at the very least polite conversation.
It has nothing to do with character. I left a detailed explanation below. And I’m from Brooklyn and rode city buses to school in Queens in the 7th grade. I rode my bike in Jamaica Estates, where POTUS grew up. Things were different then.
I believe a lot has to do with not being a nation of Americans but a nation of oppressed hyphens.
I think a lot of it is situational. If you bumped into a black family in line for a MAGA rally, you’d both be all, “where are you from? How’s MAGA doing for you? It looks like we both got here early enough to get in!”
I had the weird experience of going to a mall in Atlanta (full story told elsewhere). Being that I don’t know the area, and know there are some “rough” areas, I figured a mall with a Macy’s would be reasonably upscale and safe. When I got inside and started trekking to the Macy’s, it was a little eerie to be one of the three white people I saw inside the entire mall…..but I didn’t feel unsafe or any need to “circle the wagons”.
OTOH, there are large parts of greater LA or Oakland where I feel distinctly unsafe and avoid, even before any evaluation of skin tones takes place.
I taught for 25 years in the same square mile of a very troubled district. 22 of the 25 were in a school of about 500+ students where there were probably 5 white kids, give or take. And 10% hispanic. I never felt unsafe there with regard to kids / family members. The staff was about 50% AA. But the district administration itself was a microcosm of a dem-run city. Unqualified in high places/school board through nepotism, some petty theft, superintendent using school property and staff for personal functions – to the point where she had to be removed. You get the picture.
My (about 50% AA) colleagues were great overall, as were the kids – apart from the ones that you knew were destined for a bad fate. As I was a music teacher I saw everyone in the building, some several times a week in ensembles, year after year. We knew by 3rd grade who was on the wrong trajectory. I have lost track of how many former students are in prison for robbery, stabbing, shooting/murder – or dead in the street themselves. No white people involved in any capacity.
With regard to my black colleagues, or any work friends for that matter, it was all just regular, superficial conversation. But if pushed on the subject, I always got the sense that they would find a way to back OJ. (I’m using “back OJ” to cover excuse making in general.) But even the socially liberal white/hispanic colleagues knew that there’s no excuse for murderous brutality. And that is not a way to even the score. It’s amazing how even sharp, educated blacks who live a normal life in a great neighborhood completely lose the ability to think straight. Candace Owens nailed it the other day. What other culture celebrates the worst amongst them?
So when I say I don’t trust, and I simply don’t want it around me — it isn’t anything “active” on my part. It’s like untying a rowboat and allowing it to float on down the river. I’m simply finished with their whole deal.
That being said I’d love to go to a Diamond & Silk event. 😏

This is true. I have not gotten the impression that loving others of different races is an issue with people here. And from my observation, race is not the real issue with those pulling the strings on the current troubles in this country. That is not to say that people have not been mistreated and hurt — they have been — but there are evil forces behind the rioting, and love won’t conquer that. Similarly, loving the adherents of Islam who believe in jihad and killing “infidels” won’t stop their evil purposes. We can wish they would turn from their ways, we can wish they would know the true God, we can have pure hearts toward them; yet they will kill us just the same.
So while we are commanded to love one another and purify our own hearts, we have the difficult task of doing that while fighting real, palpable evil. Countering it must be done to protect not only ourselves, but our families and our country. And fighting evil is not the same as hate. Sometimes love must be tough. A wise person once told me that sometimes allowing people to face the consequences of their own actions is the loving thing to do.
Your sentiments are pure and correct. God is love. And if everyone would make Him their priority, the world would be completely different. We can and should manifest that love to the best of our ability. We are also commanded to fight evil.

Suppose God is your priority, and you’re a white guy. Race isn’t an issue for you.

And race *is* a very big issue for *them*.
And that means it is now a very big issue for *you* too, whether you want it to be or not. And that is the problem. White people don’t get to decide unilaterally that race isn’t an issue, because the people who hate white people don’t care what white people think about it, and no matter what you think about it (or do), they will hate you for it.

Literally true in many fields….think of all the advance people for a political event, a parade,…the crew for a theater production. We go to the live stream Met Opera performances and equally as fascinating as the actual stage production is the incredible change of scenery shown between Acts.
I worked with the national Miss America Pageant for many years and each year that entire live TV production had to be created in an empty auditorium, known for ice hockey, with only the stage as a permanent fixture. It was my favorite part of the 2 weeks…watching that $6million set being built for that one live event.
The recent space launch another perfect example.
But, the “tips” are the symbolic results of an entire team effort…and it’s a wise person that understands that and continues to remember it…not always achieved. The downfall of many is when they start to believe their own PR.
A little personal aside…The best Miss America I ever worked with did not fit the stereotype…she didn’t want to be a Broadway Star or a news personality….she was a hospice nurse. Her year of touring was very different and made a effort to focus on more serious issues. She actually changed the direction of the Pageant for future years.
I watched her touring hospitals and she was very much aware of the regular staff that peeked around the corner of a doorway, hoping to get a brief glimpse. I saw her on many occasions make a beeline to that janitor or nurse aide and stopped to recognized them. She knew that while the CEO and Board members arranged for her to be there and got the glory…it was the support staff that were the backbone of the department programs.
She had a firm understanding her fame was fleeting and she would return to a normal life within a year and once again become one of those logistic people that worked to help terminal cancer patients and their loved ones behind the scenes.

I have always been in awe of Marching Bands.

An animal hospital in Ohio that specializes in animal eye care has said it would provide free services to police horses injured during the riots and protests in the state and nearby Lexington, Kentucky.

Checking the law, it’s apparently indeed allowed to not say “so help me God.” but it is written into the law as the “default.”
This is actually different from the US Constitution’s statement of the presidential oath of office, which does not include “so help me God.” (It has been getting added on for at least a hundred years anyway).
In both cases the person taking the oath has the option of substituting words to the effect that it is an affirmation rather than an oath.
I think to comply with the spirit of the US Constitution, “so help me God” should become an optional add on, rather than the default, in the citizenship oath, just like it is for the presidential oath of office.

My point was that many of the people who founded our country, and who actually approved and signed the Constitution, were much more openly religious (Christian) than politicians (or most public people) today.
So whatever ‘spirit’ of the Constitution you were referring to, it was certainly more religious (Christian) then, not less.
The expression ‘so help me God’ is an acknowledgment of not just ‘a’ higher power, but ‘the’ higher power which guided the men who founded this Republic.
In that context, the quotes of the Founding Fathers seemed very much responsive to the point you were making.
If that is so…why does the Constitution say nothing? Why was “So help me God” left off the Presidential oath?
And the fact that there is the option to “affirm” rather than “swear” is an indication that they thought perhaps a non-Christian might ascend to that office some day, which makes one wonder about all the quotes you have supposedly “proving” the founders thought religion essential for virtue. And the point I am making is that religion (Christianity) infused their thinking on nearly every subject, without it, they would never have come up with the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. They are acknowledging these things in the quotes I posted.
Christianity was the NORM at that time, much more so than today. If they had any idea what the God-hating Marxists would do to our country some 200 years later, I believe the Founding Fathers would have been more specific about a LOT of things.

Reading the comments to an ealier one of mine, I have to admit that I am sad that some of us are struggling with the racial divide in this country in such a way that we risk judging an entire people by the actions of some.

Some time ago I intruded on a political conversation in a grocery store between 2 black men. In retrospect, I think it was perhaps unwise but since it was politics of course I could not keep my mouth shut.
As a Christian, I would probably not have thought that I would have anything in common with someone who practiced voodoo.
I commented about the results of this conversation at the time, but the results are worth revisiting.
One of the men left, the other and I talked for a good 45 minutes or so until a phone call asking where I was ended our visit.
This beautiful man, many years my junior and about 3 times my size, hugged me with tears in his eyes and a completely different take on our “racist” President, his supporters, and Christians in general.
Why? Because before he had only the word of liars with an agenda for self enrichment and power at the expense of a controlled and oppressed people, and he was blown away by the truth of the powerful love of Jesus and the desire of those of us who love Him and support the President for freedom and opportunity for all.
I believe that the BLM movement desires to enslave and oppress all people and will keep all races in subjection to them since they are allied with the Muslim Brotherhood, the Nation of Islam, Cair, Hamas, and other such organizations. If ever I thought that this was an exaggerated concern, the kneeling demanded has convinced me otherwise.
Black people are just as much threatened by this stuff as we are. Their neighborhoods and shopping areas are vulnerable, and their children as well as ours are at risk.
The racial divide is not our problem, the heart divide is. It is not one that is insurmountable in Him.
The political chasm is huge, and many black Americans have been captured and in a way enslaved and used as tools by political opportunists who won’t easily let them go.
Somehow, we have to welcome all people to come out of the dark side into the side of freedom and truth.

I am not seeing what you’re seeing in the people here. My impression from reading every comment on the previous page is that people have been, and are, open to relationships with those of different cultures and races. They are also wary when they see dishonesty, violence, and refusal to confront the truth. To see things as they are is healthy. It is what Candace Owens does.
What, exactly, are you asking people to do differently? “Love one another” is good, but in precise, detailed terms can you give examples? You provided an example of your talking with people. I suspect that every person here would be open to doing the same. I imagine there is not a person who posts here who would not be kind to a person of a different race if they were not being threatened by them. So what are you advocating that we do?
There are times when people feel so abused and worn down that they just need to take themselves out of a situation. They cannot be the front-line warriors (like Candace), and they know what is best for them. By the same token, by taking care of themselves they are not part of the problem. And it doesn’t mean their hearts are not in the right place. Our hearts would not be in the right place if we judged them.

To me, circling the wagons in the sense that we are closed off to the engagement of truth and love for the cause of Maga will not help any of us and that is how I read it.

Unfair treatment and labeling through judging others without really knowing them is tearing apart our country and all of us.

I am probably suffering from a certain amount of despair which has more to do with the state of the country than people on this site, although the fact that we are now split into several sites is painful to me, I miss people.
In situations like our current crisis, we each can choose to react or act,
I hoped that my original words might have offered a beautiful hope for others who might look at the death and destruction we have witnessed and felt overwhelmed.
I am not naturally strong, courageous, or a conqueror without the Lord. So many situations have looked impossible, but they have not proven to be so in Him. This is really what I hoped people would get out of my comments, but obviously even with the best of intentions there was a lot of room for disagreement through my word choices,
I am an imperfect vessel, but I hope that that will not put people off from the perfect Gift available to them.
I have been a social worker and worked with and for a lot of people whom I have disagreed with and studied a lot of indoctrination labeled as science. I walked out of required black studies and informed the black professor that if I were black and had to listen to that stuff on a regular basis I would have no hope. It is toxic hate labeled as truth and by now most of our children have been poisoned with it.
Over and over the Lord has led me to work with those of differing views, differing gender agreements and persuasions, and political bias. Inevitably, I have gone back to Jesus’ acceptance of others such as the adulterous woman in the temple and at the well and realized that it is up to Him to judge and me to act in the love and acceptance that He extended to me…not that I have always managed to do so,
But He contains the encouragement and the source of strength that we can each tap into that I wanted to remind us of as we are swept up by the unfairness of current events.

Since I assume it’s directed at me . . . I’ll reply. Yes, the truth about people shows itself in those heartfelt moments. But not SOLELY in the heartfelt moments. It often shows itself in the most hideous, brutal moments.
As I said in my long follow-up comment, my distrust and shunning is not an “active” thing for me. It’s like untying a rowboat and letting float away with the current. I’m simply over their whole deal. If they are willing to stand up for this en masse, then I’m willing to shun it. With all the benefits and opportunities that have been given in the last half-century, there comes a point where the “enslaved” argument no longer applies.
I taught in a school with 5 white kids, on average, for 22 out of my 25 years. The school lacked for NOTHING, materially. Free breakfast and lunch, all supplies provided, a sharp motivated staff, a laptop for every child from 3-8 grades, the latest model jumbotron in every classroom, free string and band instruments, sports and clubs with an additional meal after school, field trips and assembly programs all the time, counselors, mentors and everything else imaginable. But in terms of test scores, it was a “failing school”. That term is a joke. The only thing lacking in that school was a preponderance of students looking to strive and succeed. As in horses that want the drink. Period.
So I’ll continue to go with my gut. I don’t wish anyone ill, but I’m over the bitching from one side and excuse making from the other. Especially after foregoing other offers to spend a quarter century trying to make a small difference, and seeing none. Literally none.

It’s rather interesting to see the travails of Professor S.I. Hayakawa, in his efforts to make English the official language of the State of California (might have been the whole USA, it’s been a long time).
The hue and cry that ensued, calling him racist against minorities (conveniently forgetting, of course, that Hayakawa, a Japanese, was a minority himself). One might term that protest at the time as “black privilege”, as only the blacks could be properly considered as victims, in their eyes…..
A colleague of mine in Holland, CFO of his division, explained to me that they learned three or even four languages in school there, from early on (third grade or so). And he could switch between them effortlessly… which sometimes caused funny situations when he was explaining stuff in the “wrong” language 🙂 [He once told a joke to my future wife and me, in German, we cracked up at it, and our American colleague asked him to explain. He repeated the whole joke, in German, not realizing it. The look on our colleague’s face was priceless 😮 ]
Another colleague, in our office in Malmö (in MUCH better times, 35 years ago) said much the same – Swedish, English, German, and French or another language were the norm.
My son had German, English, French, and Latin in school. Along with all the math, history, chemistry, biololgy, reli, etc. It really has helped him, especially with his failing hearing.

The my husband attended City College of NYC he had to take speech class so did the young adults to loose their NY accent in my husband’s case the German accent. They already began with speech classes in grate school.
Several years later the school was opened to everyone and one did not have to show academic excellence and a test of 94 and above.
The College stopped teaching speech and encouraged everyone to speak the way they grew up slang and all.
Some black young people were upset because they realized they could never advance if they did not speak proper English.
The white do gooders progressives have done much harm to the black community and with that to all Americans. We benefit if all people are encouraged to excellence. Military used to be a way for poor kids even from Appalachia to better themselves and get more education. We took away mandatory military service and replaced it with nothing.
My husband had a solo student and he was gone for 3 years when he came back he told my husband “that the military taught him discipline.” He became an A student and found a well paying job.

Interestingly, none of the charges against any of the officers claim Floyd’s death was intentionally inflicted.

By and large, police officers are heroes who put their lives on the line to protect the communities in which they live and serve. How then should we react to cases of police misconduct and brutality when they come to light?
Confronting this requires what Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey referred to as “this one, nearly impenetrable barrier, which is the union contract and the way it is set up.”
Derek Chauvin, the now-fired police officer who was arrested and charged in George Floyd’s death, had multiple complaints against him, only one of which resulted in a reprimand.
Tou Thao, the now-fired officer seen standing guard in the video as Chauvin presses a knee into Floyd’s neck, also had multiple complaints against him. Minneapolis settled a lawsuit that alleged brutality by Thao and another officer for $25,000 in 2017.
Why then were these officers still allowed to stand in the line of duty?
It is important to remember that not all complaints filed against police officers have merit. Some are filed by individuals who are upset at an officer who arrested them for legitimate reasons. Some gang members or drug dealers may file complaints against a good and zealous police officer in the hopes of getting that officer sidelined so that they can continue their nefarious activities.
Nonetheless, such complaints must be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly, and when it is determined that a complaint has merit, appropriate consequences must follow. The stakes are too high in community safety and cooperation, officer morale, and the professional reputation of law enforcement agencies to do otherwise.
And yet Frey said in an interview: “We do not have the ability to get rid of many of these officers that we know have done wrong in the past due to issues with both the contract and the arbitration associated with the union.”
The Minneapolis mayor also said:
Frey went on to say that a full-on culture shift requires both hiring the officers who embody the qualities and culture that city officials envision and getting rid of officers “who do not embody that vision.” The problem is the city’s inability to accomplish the latter.
Time and again, union contracts come into play in keeping police officers accused and even convicted of misconduct and abuse in positions of power. In an effort to “protect” their members, police unions instead can subject some in the community to lawlessness and injustice.
Historically, police unions negotiated compensation provisions. But then, as former Minneapolis Police Chief Robert Olson described it: “During recessions [the city] would give the union management rights in lieu of money [and] that’s when trouble starts.”
Olson noted that this wasn’t just a one-time incident, but a continual build-up over time.
“We’re talking about incremental changes in contracts over years that cumulatively, suddenly, there’s all of these hoops, which makes it far more difficult for chiefs to sustain discipline,” the former police chief said.
The problems are not just in Minneapolis, but nationwide. A review of 82 police union contracts in large cities by the Reuters news service found that contracts often include provisions that obstruct discipline, erase discipline records, and insert elevated standards of review that shield rogue police officers from justice.
Although some of us may tend to link all police together, or tend to assume that all the problems come from within police departments themselves, that’s often not the case. Plenty of instances exist in which police officers report misconduct and abuse by their peers.
And although police firings are rare, plenty of instances also exist in which police chiefs dismiss officers for just cause, only to have those decisions overturned following challenges from labor unions, often over technicalities unrelated to the underlying misconduct.
For a 2017 news article in The Washington Post titled “Fired, Rehired,” reporters obtained the records of 37 large municipal police departments that collectively had fired 1,881 officers since 2006.
Of those fired, the Post discovered, nearly 1 in 4—a total of 451 officers—successfully appealed and the departments were forced to rehire them. Not only that, but a majority of the rehired officers received back pay from the date of their termination until the date they were reinstated.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus was forced to reinstate an officer he fired—not just once, but twice. As McManus explained, overturning disciplinary and dismissal decisions for reasons other than factual errors “undermines a chief’s authority and ignores the chief’s understanding of what serves the best interest of the community and the department.”
In addition to an abundance of firsthand evidence, academic studies also have found police unions to be part of the underlying problem.
A 2019 study of “moral character” violations reported by local police agencies in Florida between 1996 and 2015 found that “collective bargaining rights led to about a 40% increase in violent incidents of misconduct among sheriffs’ offices.”
In a 2017 Duke Law Journal article, professor Stephen Rushin analyzed 178 police contracts and provided empirical evidence on how collective bargaining agreements “can frustrate police accountability efforts” by limiting officer interrogations after alleged misconduct, banning civilian oversight, indemnifying officers in civil suits, mandating the destruction of disciplinary records, and limiting the length of internal investigations.
And in a 2012 Michigan Law Review article, professor Rachel A. Harmon described collective bargaining as functioning like “an immediate tax” on internal misconduct reforms.
But despite widespread evidence that police unions play a role in police injustices, most reform efforts have failed to confront the unions as part of the problem.
The report from President Barack Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing mentioned unions only in the context of ensuring they have a seat at the table in the reform process. But history shows that giving police unions power over accountability and discipline typically results in less of each, and can pose a risk to community protection.
Paige Fernandez, policing policy adviser for the American Civil Liberties Union, argued in a May 2019 article that “historically in the U.S., police union contract negotiations have been used as vehicles for rolling back accountability, transparency, and civilian oversight. In doing so they have further damaged relationships with community members, whom the police are meant to serve.”
If we wanted to ensure the safety of companies’ products, we would not allow organizations that represent the individuals who produce those products to set the safety standards and control the consequences of violating those standards.
Similarly, if we want to protect members of the community from police misconduct and abuse, we cannot allow police unions to control the circumstances and treatment of those misconduct allegations, nor to undermine the decisions of police chiefs to remove problematic officers.
At a minimum, local and city officials should renegotiate collective bargaining provisions in police contracts to remove provisions that hamstring departments’ ability to enforce accountability and discipline.

He has pointed out that the police secure areas where firefighters are battling blazes. They also protect EMS when they are helping people in dangerous situations.
