A number of physicians from all over the country came together to talk some truth about COVID-19. By far the star of the show was Dr. Stella Immanuel, a Nigerian native who now lives in Texas. Her remarks begin just after the three minute mark of this particular video:

Coronavirus Update 7/28/2020 – Fenofibrate
BTHO COVID-19
So today at the time of this writing there are 56,130 new cases and deaths are at 1,467. The numbers are finally starting to decline. However, I am writing this earlier than normal so that could have an effect.
Locally, in Texas cases are still very high. We had 3,851 new cases which is a little lower than previously.. In addition we had a high 1,039 new deaths today. With an increasing fatality rate of 1.4%. This large jump is due to the change in reporting Covid-19 deaths. They are now only being counted when it is on the death certificate. Dying with Covid-19 does not count. Only physicians not politicians can now count Covid-19 deaths. Texas has strict criteria for filling out death certificates so these are not likely going to be falsified as physicians wouldn’t want to risk their state medical license.

There are 163,872 active cases in Texas. This is now steady over the past few days and this is good news. In addition Covid-19 hospitalizations were resign sharply a month ago but have slowed down some the past few days and actually went down from 10,075 to 9,781 today. Hospitalizations have been relatively stable since 7/8/20. So this is really good news on that front.
In addition in Texas we have 229,107 recovered now.
Today in Dallas county with 426 new cases and 2 new deaths. Harris county with 846 new cases and 10 new deaths. Collin county with 27 new cases and no new deaths being reported. Denton county with 78 new cases and 18 new deaths. Tarrant county with 50 new cases and no new deaths. Brazos county with 36 new cases and no new deaths. Travis county with 79 new cases and no new deaths. Fort Bend county with no new cases and 30 new deaths. Bexar county with 355 new cases and 155 new deaths reported.
For the newbies we have been predicting an overall fatality rate somewhere in the 0.3 to 0.7 range when we finally correct the denominator.
Fenofibrate as a possible treatment for Covid-19.
A study conducted by professor Yaakov Nahmias at Hebrew University in Israel has found that an existing cholesterol drug, fenofibrate, could ‘downgrade’ Covid-19 threat level to that of a common cold.
The findings allegedly come from lab tests on human lung tissue infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. According to the researchers, the virus leads to deposits of lipids in the lungs. They believe it needs this fat in the lungs to reproduce itself. Nahmias partnered with Mount Sinai Medical Center researcher Dr Benjamin tenOever to gain better insights into SARS-CoV-2 mechanism of attack on the human body.
The researchers observed that the virus changes lipid metabolism in human lungs. They believe that halting this process could help prevent the onset of problems that increase the severity of the disease. The findings of the study explain why high blood sugar and cholesterol levels are highly dangerous factors for individuals contracting the disease, even without having diabetes. While SARS-CoV-2 hinders the ability of the body to break down fat, fenofibrate starts this process by binding and activating the DNA site that is blocked by the virus. Thus, reversing the potential damage done by the virus.
Nahmias was quoted by The Times of Israel as saying: “The interesting thing about our study is that fenofibrate actually binds and activates the very site on the DNA that the virus shuts down — a part of our DNA that allows our cells to burn fat.
“Virus infection causes the lung cells to start building up fat, and fenofibrate allows the cells to burn it.”

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) – 600mg twice per day shown to decrease severity of influenza, improve lung functions in COPD, antioxidant properties, potentially helps prevent clotting and with mental disorders. Caution for asthmatics as there is potential for bronchospasm but this is rare.

A little bit of random news from Casa de Cthulhu…..
We have this fridge we got in 2004, a GE Monogram side-by-side. It soaked up a bunch of abuse, but then it started getting weird.
As to the abuse, there would be annual “candy making days” when The Girlz would get together and paint chocolate into truffle molds, then drop the molds into the fridge to harden up — then fill them and drop them into the fridge to solidify — then make the bottoms and put them in the fridge to become a complete truffle. At times, they’d have the door of the refrigerator open for 20 minutes straight. They also chipped my granite countertop, broke the tip of one of my best chef’s knives, and bent the tip of another.
After the Fiancee went on the “lorikeet diet” under medical supervision, there has constantly been fruit going bad in the fridge.
And we started seeing weird “thermal runaways”. The freezer is nominally at 0 degrees and the fridge is nominally at 37. We’d see temperatures that would gradually go to maybe -5/42 — but, then, it would run away to -7/46 and keep going.
Now, the way that combined refrigerators work is that the freezer has a thermostat and a cooling coil, and then there is a little flapper that allows freezer air into the fridge at the top of the fridge. Cold air sinks, so it cools all the way to the bottom, then there is a return restrictor that allows some warmer fridge air into the bottom of the freezer, where it rises. The freezer should be dead nuts on, while the fridge should be controlled by the circular flow of air.
We’ve had some repair people play with it, to great expense, and they’ve replaced the flapper valve and the computer. And it still goes into these paroxysms. And I’m convinced that the restriction on the return air flow is gronked — and it’s probably clogged by mildew contributed by our little refrigerated compost pile.
The last time we had this problem, a few months ago, I anticipated being able to do some observations…..but the Fiancee decided to do things a different way. This time, I tried a couple of things and got answers I expected. Tomorrow, I expect to be spending significant time laying on the kitchen floor with my head in a fridge. Any of you who will have better Tuesdays should feel free to wish me luck.

UPDATE: This model has another flapper valve at the bottom. Believe it or not, on a multi-thousand dollar fridge, these flapper valves are little plastic doors encased in styrofoam and attached with silicone. You wouldn’t make a kids’ toy this way because they’d destroy it in minutes.
We had the flapper valve at the top replaced a couple of years ago, but it still goes into runaway. There are videos on YouSchmoob for GE Monogram bottom dampers, but I’m having trouble finding one on the exact model I’ve got [42″ cabinet depth — last time I do THAT!!]. I suspect the guy replaced the top damper because (a) he was trained to, and (b) you don’t have to wallow on the ground to do it — but I suspect it was the bottom damper that was bad.

Now I barely tan, even though I am outside in the garden a LOT. I think the anti-oxidants in the berries protect me. Kids just have that naturally.

A new study of COVID-19, based on data from a symptom tracker app, determined that there are six distinct “types” of the disease involving different clusters of symptoms. Researchers from King’s College London studied data from approximately 1,600 U.K. and U.S. patients who regularly logged their symptoms in the COVID Symptom Tracker App in March and April.
Typically, doctors will look for key symptoms such as cough, fever and loss of the sense of smell to detect COVID-19. The study, which has not been peer-reviewed, says the six different “types” of COVID-19 can vary by severity and come with their own set of symptoms.
“I think it’s very, very interesting,” Dr. Bob Lahita, who is not affiliated with the study, told CBSN anchors Vladimir Duthiers and Anne-Marie Green. “Among the patients I see, those who recovered, many of them present different ways: some people with fever and some without fever, and some with nausea and vomiting, some people with diarrhea, etc.”
The six clusters of symptoms outlined in the study are:
1. Flu-like with no fever: Headache, loss of smell, muscle pains, cough, sore throat, chest pain, no fever.
2. Flu-like with fever: Headache, loss of smell, cough, sore throat, hoarseness, fever, loss of appetite.
3. Gastrointestinal: Headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, diarrhea, sore throat, chest pain, no cough.

Good morning all….making chicken stock this morning….heavenly smell in the house. Certainly perks up the spirits.
Viewing the beautiful flight of the eagle reminds me of a incident right outside our kitchen door yesterday morning. We have a cement stoop immediately outside the glass door and have fed dry meal worms to the birds for years there. It’s the cat’s TV and he talks to them. If we are late putting them out, both the birds and now our cat vocally remind us of our neglect.
About the past 5 years or so, we have added an extended family of anole lizards who have discovered the joys of meal worms, as well. Usually they appear late afternoon, being sun-seeking creatures. However, most often the worms have been consumed and they have to really scrounge for a few crumbs. So, finally at least one or two have started to come for breakfast.
Turned out to be a bad decision for one of the females yesterday morning when a red-tail hawk, that likes to prowl our back garden, swooped down and grabbed the lizard. The stoop is small with iron railings and large hedges on each side, so the dive has to be very precise.
Made a lot of noise…scared both the cat and me!
here’s one of the hawks that adopted us a couple of years ago…they police the driveway looking for mice, chipmunks, the like…(hope it posts–they were huge)

Josiah came home from the hospital yesterday. He’s got Lots of meds, 28 pills/day this week at least. We’ll get labs tomorrow to see where the liver is at. It was “rejection” but we still don’t know to what degree, as in only the oral preliminary biopsy results were available so far. Our whole family is exhausted & trying to regroup. His sister is going to take J & his fiance Rose out for a meal tomorrow, so that’s something everybody’s looking forward to.

YNNWOOD, Wash. – Authorities in Washington state have found about $19 million worth of fentanyl at a Lynnwood home where a couple was arrested over the weekend.
Snohomish Regional Drug Task Force investigators reportedly found about 1,900 grams (70 ounces) of fentanyl, 808 grams (30 ounces) of heroin, 12 grams (0.5 ounces) of methamphetamine, $14,000 in cash, and equipment suggesting the couple had planned to distribute the drugs, The Daily Herald reported.
A potentially fatal dose of fentanyl is 2 milligrams, authorities said.
The 38-year-old man and his girlfriend, who were not identified by The Daily Herald, were arrested Saturday by Task Force officers, authorities said. Both are being held in the Snohomish County Jail.
The man was charged with drug manufacturing with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of a firearm. The woman was charged with drug manufacturing with intent to deliver and possession of heroin.
Task Force officers were tracking the couple for awhile, and followed them from their Lynnwood home to the Arlington Municipal Airport north of Everett, where they were arrested without incident Saturday.
Officers had already been approved for a search warrant for their home and vehicle, where they reportedly discovered the drugs, money and two guns with ammunition.
The couple told investigators that while they were unemployed, they visited casinos three to five times a week, authorities said.

If memory serves on that building – I was ten or eleven the last time I was there decades ago – at this point, it is probably not adequate, and not being architecturally stunning, not worth the money to make it more efficient. Building a new one would be cheaper. The question, though, is WHERE, and what will be included in the project.

Many people think that Wexner is the guy who gave Epstein his start-up money.
And a lot of people are wondering why someone would give Epstein a big stack of money.
“Giuffre has also alleged that she was forced to have sex with former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barack [sic],” the filing read in response to the claims against Dershowitz. “Giuffre has offered no proof other than her uncorroborated word.”
Derschowitz is suing Giuffre for defamation. He denies the claim, and offers further that he’s only had sex with one woman, his wife, in his entire life.
Which would be easy to disprove… if it were untrue.
I suppose it’s possible it’s just his wife and Giuffre. Still, a bold denial which seems like it might be true because… why make such a big denial if you knew someone was in a position to contradict it?

You should wash your mouth with soap living in NC and calling Rochester winters “mild”. Yeah, sure, they can say that in Buffalo, or Ontario, or Thule…..but Rochester is *brrrr* cold to this California boy. [Fiancee went to St. John Fisher].
Mainly the southern tier, ski country due to the lake effect wind and weather patterns. Buffalo is cold and very gray skies from Nov to March. Usually have one or two bigger snows in the city during a winter, from lake effect weather patterns. Life goes on just fine and people know how to navigate what the weather brings there.
Northern suburbs and east towards Rochester get much the same type of winter. Less snow and easier for travelers, but sometimes Rochester gets quite a bit of snow. Lots of winters are fairly mild like this past one and then there are the big bad ones that occur a couple times a decade. Those are nasty usually all across WNY right into Rochester. Always remember this region sits between and along side two of the Great Lakes-Erie and Ontario- and is effected greatly by them. Off the end tip of Ontario over by Oswego and Syracuse is a region of lots of snow in winter. Big time.
Someone from the south or milder climes would probably not like the whole winter picture in WNY. But it’s not always as much snow as people around the country think outside the lake effect patterns which are mostly south of the city. If sunshine is important on a daily basis though, this region is not for you in the winter.
