The Wolf’s Head Pub is open for business. It’s Friday and I don’t know about anyone else but I am ready for some camaraderie and shoulders to lean on. Thank our good God that the pub is full of fellow patriots who pick each other up off the floor, whether we’ve had too much of this dire situation afflicting our republic or too much madeira.
Madeira you say? I always wondered about this interesting drink. Turns out madeira is of Portuguese origin. Wine is subject to spoilage from heat, light and air (ask anyone who has tried to drink a week old bottle of opened wine).
Some time in the 1400s, the Portuguese discovered that fortifying fermenting wine with distilled spirits results in a wine that is safe from spoilage and extremely long-lasting. From Wikipedia:
“When added to wine before the fermentation process is complete, the alcohol in the distilled beverage kills the yeast and leaves residual sugar behind. The end result is a wine that is both sweeter and stronger, normally containing about 20% alcohol by volume (ABV)”
Madeira can be dry or sweet depending upon the distilled spirit used and the time of fermentation. Other fortified wines include marsala, sherry, port and vermouth. Incidentally, for those who make homemade bone broth, use a dry vermouth instead of wine or vinegar to help dissolve the calcium in the bones. The resulting taste is vastly superior.

It does remind me of a time diving off Taveuni in Fiji. I accidently dropped a fin in the water and jumped in after it. I grabbed it and the current line and went back to prepping in the water, then I turned around and saw that I only had about eighteen inches of the 25 foot current line left.
I came really close to visiting Samoa, and my passport was back in the hotel room.

The one at the bottom is actually a DIFFERENT notification system – it’s the “page notifier” that is part of wpDiscuz, the commenting system. The “bell” is part of JetPack, which is a plugin from WordPress. If that’s not loading, it’s probably because you need to whitelist the site. Are you on an Apple device or Windows?

These are small aggravations compared to voter fraud or not having a Q Tree group.
Question – How is this Word Press site safer than the old one? I realize now that I should have read the posts about the transition at the old site, but there was so much going on with the election fraud business and I was watching all the hearings.
We are very likely to get deplatformed by WordPress, since as a Q site, they should hit us harder and sooner than Sundance. In our case, b/c we are a free site and not famous, we would be terminated suddenly and without saving our data. I could not take that chance. Better to leave of our own accord.
But the new one is still WordPress affiliated. How is it safer?
WordPress.org develops the WordPress software on the FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) model. They can’t ban anybody, because you have the legal right to copy the source code and recompile it yourself.
WordPress.com is a commercial company that provides webhosting and managed WordPress. They can cut your website out from under you.
This is very similar to Ubuntu (FOSS) which has Canonical doing for-profit consulting, and Fedora (FOSS) which has Red Hat doing for-profit consulting. It’s one step better than a source code escrow in that the source code is open and published.
This site is currently hosted on Epik — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epik_(domain_registrar) . They are far less likely to deplatform us than WordPress.com [*spit*].

You have to be careful that the TEXT that posts IS in fact the URL and not just some text that has a link to the image – or the system will “honor the text” and keep the link instead of turning the link into the picture.
So when you paste, just make sure it’s the URL of the image that pastes!

If you cursor over it, it says:

I learned to crochet from my grandma when I was eight. I crocheted all my life, and first tried knitting when I was in my forties. I was lucky someone showed me Continental style. You mostly only “work” with the right hand needle. The left needle is just the holder for the stitches. It is much more like the “motion” of crocheting.
I ordered one item, a custom piece of costume jewelry through Etsy a few years ago. The artist/seller sent the wrong item and would not correct it because “she would lose money.” There was no way to complain to Etsy about it, so that left a very bad impression for me. Never, and will never, order from them again.

Up at the top right of the page, at the right end of the black bar that goes across, there is the profile-icon and the Bell icon. When I click on the profile-icon, there is the name slowcreekno, then a [Sign Out] button, and below that a menu with My Profile, Account Settings and so on.
I went over to the U-tree and looked at the profile there, which opened a new window referring to wordpress.com, with the same contents. But quite different from how it acts here, where it stays in place.
I am probably still logged into both systems, maybe try logging out of the other one (via U-tree) and see what happens.
I have now logged-out of the WordPress.com account. It looks that I am still logged-in here, as the profile menu here still offers the [Sign Out] button. So if this message makes it through right away, that would be fine then.

Went to Jetpack.com in browser, there was an option to install. Once you install, option never appears again.
Installed WordPress App from App Store. This may be key. You need to install this to get access to your Profile settings, Reader, etc.
Once installed, go into Reader and follow theQtree.com site. Trying to use the app to maneuver is MISERABLE on IDevices!! Too many screens, backing, forthing, and scrolling.
Go to theqtree.com in browser. Even if it says your signed in, sign out, and back in.
Between all this and Wolfie resetting, resycning, the black bar is back like I said above. Bell still circling……Baby steps.

(Having checked out your link) Yes and no. The text content isn’t what I’m after, its the graphics and layout. I get that inside the author area by going to the list of prior posts and doing a “copy post.” At that point I could literally hit publish and have an exact duplicate of the old post show up, but I don’t do that. I immediately change the date (and sometimes I get that right), then go through and edit text, trying to think of something coherent to say and a coin I haven’t already yapped about. And I don’t have to do anything to have the eagle pic in place.
I can’t do any of that with just a link to the old post. But thanks for the effort!

The Iowa Department of Human Services is facing a whistle-blower lawsuit connected to a troubled care facility in Western Iowa.
The lawsuit references the troubling allegations at Glenwood Resource Center, where former Superintendent Jerry Rea was accused of spearheading human experiments including sexual arousal studies on Iowans with severe mental disabilities.
The latest 50 page lawsuit filed on behalf of six former employees outlines what they describe as an environment of emotional distress.
They claim Rea proceeded with the experiments after receiving commitment from the Iowa Special Assistant Attorney General to begin work.
The lawsuit said in part, “that the Special Assistant Attorney General was ‘quite excited about the prospects along with… in vivo assessments of sexual arousal.”

I think the WordPress login is probably easier for JetPack to assume your identity, whereas with the other (local, our site) login, WordPress has to equate you to your WordPress ID.

That Consent Decree was damn near a life sentence imposed on the Republican party, probably due to false accusations, in order to ensure election fraud would be unopposed for the Democrats. I had user headspace trouble scheduling it…the scheduler is using AM/PM instead of 24 hour time, and it wouldn’t recognize 00:01, kept trying to make it 2:01 PM. I thought at first it was a timezone thing; I enter midnight and it translates it to 2 AM EST. Finally it dawned on me I had to use 12 instead of 0 (and switch to AM).

Are you able to “enable desktop site” in iOS? That may get the black bar working!
No such option. Black bar appears, it’s just not functioning. Iphone only shows user icon, nothing else. Pretty sure it’s due to the small display. Ipad shows all icons, everything works EXCEPT Notification Bell. When you select it, you get a spinning circle. Likes on comments do not stick either.
People that don’t have the black bar cannot get to any profile or notification settings in IOS.
1) go to jetpack.com in a browser and select install, and sign in w/WP user name. If you don’t see install, then it already is. Install option disappears once it installs.
2) Install the WordPress App from the app store. You can change all your settings in there. From the Reader, FOLLOW theqtree.com. (It’s possible to use this app for the site, but it’s a miserable experience)

I listened to the video clip Carr put up that has the part of the Biden/Harris “interview” where Biden says that he’ll “develop some disease and say I have to resign”.
First, Biden made it clear that this scenario would happen if he disagreed with Harris “on some moral principle”. Not “I might” or “I would think about”. He said “I WILL [as ‘I’ll’]”. And not a word about a Constitutional principle. And by the way, just what ARE Biden’s “moral principles” — since he’s OK with abortion on demand?
Second, at 0:15 into the clip on the Carr website, just after Biden’s statement on “I’ll develop some disease and say I have to resign”, the camera shows both Biden and Harris. Just before that, Harris’ expression at 0:14 in the clip is telegraphing that she wasn’t prepared for Biden to say this. Then she shook her head as if to say, “No”. But it’s NOT the “No” that one would say to reassure someone who would say something like this. Harris was telegraphing “No, you shouldn’t have said that” — meaning that Biden was LETTING THE CAT OUT OF THE BAG.
Third, at 0:17 in the clip, when Biden starts to go on about “we discussed at length our views on foreign policy”, Harris starts to relax because he veered into another train of thought.

Hope I’m not the only one still trying to figure this out and get all in order. I even changed the rotation to horizontal screen, but STILL do not the Orange circles, green circles, et al….and no bells! ☹️😩

GrandmainTexas…I’m enjoying your pub theme! First time I ever heard about a bottle of port “requiring” to be totally consumed was on a trip to Portugal. A year or two after that trip, friends of ours needed to buy a very special gift for a friend who was really into ports, so when they were in Portugal they shopped. They, like us, didn’t like ports and were fairly ignorant about them but ended up purchasing a $400 bottle for this man.
When they gave it to him out in Steamboat Springs a few months later, that’s when they learned it should be consumed entirely once opened. Of course, he insisted on opening it immediately.. .and that ended up being a lot of very expensive wine they didn’t particularly like.
For me, I mainly use port, Madeira and sherry in cooking (sauces.) A friend gave us a “special” bottle of an orange-flavored sherry last Xmas and I decided to open it just a few days ago. It was a big yuck for our tastes as a sipping beverage, but it will find its way into a nice sauce in the future!
My rule of thumb is if I would not drink the wine it does not go into a sauce. I am the type who drinks 1/4 of a glass once every couple of months (When my back hurts) and Hubby does not drink at all although he will taste a wine.
Yes, but just because I personally don’t care for the wine, sherry, etc. doesn’t mean it won’t be good incorporated elsewhere. A matter of taste, not to mention then it would sit in the liquor cabinet forever!
I do have a bottle of plum liquor that was part of a fixed menu gourmet dinner club we belong to a few years ago. It is vile-tasting…imagine drinking turpentine! I tried to gift it to the others in attendance, have tried to go on the Internet to find a way to use it, etc. it will eventually be poured down the drain, I’m sure, because THAT will never be added to a sauce! LOL

25 years ago today my husband & I went into the local hospital in my parents’ city (we still lived in Northern Michigan but had no competent hospitals to manage a high-risk pregnancy & delivery) to have labor induced on our premie twins to “get the little guy out before he dies”. I was supposed to labor in one room & deliver in another w/ 15 staff present, 5 for each baby & 5 for me, allegedly.
Instead w/ just my nurse mom & husband in the room I had the urge to push & there was no stopping that train (& I’m usually so cooperative!). Mom ran to the adjacent nurses station & they paged the Dr. STAT. A nurse ran into the room & had time to get just ONE glove on to catch Brandon’s head as he was born. One minute later Josiah emerged, looking more dead than alive (per my husband, who almost passed out). He had apgars of 4/9 while B had apgars of 8/9. B was 5#4oz & J was 2#6oz–J qualified for SSI at birth by his very low birthweight, under 1200 grams, he was 1060grams, I believe.
Brandon came home from the hospital 10 days later & was so small that we actually tucked him into a Christmas stocking for a picture. Josiah remained hospitalized in the NICU w/ multiple medical problems, including failure to thrive. I pumped milk for him after every daytime feeding of Brandon & visited him daily at the hospital for 2 consecutive feedings, eating lunch & researching his many birth defects in the hospital library using my mom’s staff pass for access. I missed visiting on Christmas day & one other day when I was sick & felt guilty about both of those “missteps”.
My husband continued working Up North & commuting to my parents’ home on weekends to be with his family. Mom & Dad watched our older son, recently turned 2, & baby Brandon & our dog while I visited Josiah in the hospital…
Early February a University of Michigan Pediatric Cardiologist was coming to that birth hospital for an outpatient peds cardiology clinic. As a personal favor to the head of the Neonatal ICU he visited Josiah & determined w/ just a stethoscope that he needed open heart surgery & made arrangements to send him via ambulance to U of M (where all Josiah’s, up to 19 now I think, & Nathaniel’s & 1 of Brandon’s surgeries have occurred) for Open Heart Surgery to put a Gortex Patch on a (relatively) large VSD–Ventricular Septal Defect. He was about 4# then…
Michael came down to be with me during our baby’s heart surgery. We took video at like 2am when we all gathered in Josiah’s room for the first time that our family could be together (I was fearful that if J died in surgery we would have never been together as a family), as the birth hospital had was stricter visitation policies & N had only seen J through the NICU window. Of course the boys were all asleep by then. We got pictures of Josiah’s scar-free torso, just for the record….He came through surgery great & came “home” from the hospital like 10days later, midweek.
My husband came down for the weekend & we drove back to our home, after almost 3 months away for the boys & I. Monday was my first day alone w/ 3 in diapers & a post-op baby who’d had Congestive Heart Failure & vomited all his meds & few ml’s of feeding virtually every time he was fed–super scary.
The next day my husband didn’t come home from work & while I was in the midst of someone’s diaper called & left a message saying he was hurt & at the ER. I got a neighbor lady to stay w/ the boys so I could go be with him–he’d broken his arm.
We called my parents, fortunately dad was retired by then, & they decided to come up the next day to help us–again. Josiah was getting sick & Mom & I took him to our local pediatrician. She wanted to know how soon we could have him back in Ann Arbor & apparently our answer wasn’t soon enough so she ordered an ambulance & J & I rode that back to U of M, 200+miles south later that day, we’d been home about half a week.
My husband wasn’t allowed to drive yet so he co-piloted w/ my mom driving & baby Brandon riding along & my dad drove w/ 2 year old Nathaniel. All this travelling was in a blizzard w/ my mom occasionally heading off the road toward the reflectors, as she needed eye surgery & couldn’t see very well–yikes!
I listened to the ambulance guys on calls with life flight during our ride as they kept re-assessing whether or not Josiah needed to be airlifted to U of M. Fortunately he was able to travel the distance by the road.
He had RSV & was hospitalized for about a week & a half then & again 9 months later with that life-threatening respiratory illness. He also had an unplanned surgery on inguinal hernias a couple months later.
So, even though we were “experienced” parents w/ a 2 year old son we had no real preparation for the chaos that would ensue with a super complex special needs child. It’s been a wild ride of a quarter of a century. God has been so good to see us all through some Very Tough times. But what a blessing.
Today Josiah read to me one of his Psalms of Josiah that he wrote on the occasion of his birthday. He is a super complex & challenging person to live with and advocate for. But what a heart of worship & spiritual warfare he has! We’ve been forever changed by the experience of caring for our twins & in many ways each learning to lay down our lives for Josiah’s myriad needs over the years.

Yes, this is so true. The Lord Really laid on one of my mom’s prayer group ladies to pray for TWO BABIES & she stormed the gates of heaven on behalf of the little guy–Josiah. We knew at 20 weeks that he wasn’t growing right but we didn’t know of all the issues.
My husband & I had the naming discussion over the phone while I was still in the hospital & he said that he thought the little guy should be “Josiah”. Some time later, once I was back home I looked up the meaning of the twins’ names in baby name book. Josiah means “God will heal & protect!” What a perfect name!
The Lord’s hand has been upon him/them from the womb. I believe that the enemy wanted to not even have Josiah breathe the breath of Life but God has had other plans for His “secret weapon”. God uses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise & the weak things to confound the strong & this verse is shown to be Truth in the life of my precious special son!

When my post doesn’t show up right away, I keep hitting the refresh at the top of the page until the comment shows up. I think you have to do it before it hits moderation, I can’t remember if it has ever worked after it went to moderation.

The new commenting system has a scary powerful customization feature. I’m not a CSS guy – that was my friend, the XML guru. Hence I overplayed and changed the text everywhere, but I think it was a good accident! I like the new font even in the posts!

Okay, I got a bell! For me, the location was immediately following Grandmaintexas’s post, but prior to comments. There’s a place that says “log in.” All this time I thought I WAS logged in since I’ve been able to read and post.
Evidently not. So, I experimented…clicked on “log in” and that took me to WP…logged in with that account and darn if the little bell didn’t immediately show up.
However, I had no replies and yet I know Gail has replied about wine, etc. none of those showed up…yet.

Your font size is smaller than the rest..ours are really big
I just increased the font size! 1.25em (25% larger). I did 50% larger and backed off!!! It was TELESCOPIC SCARY!!!

I change my font with the computer that way if something is to small I can see it better
I’m liking it the more I use it — and tweaking it through CSS should be good for most annoyances……but there are two special cases that I am concerned about: Steve and Zoe.
I should point out that there likely exist other people with the same families of issues, but they are regulars that exemplify a case.
In Steve’s case, he is highly bandwidth-bound, and I am very concerned that the fancy “insert a reply after the original comment” — which is very slick and I like — might redraw the page and suck down his bandwidth by a chunk. [Mind you, he could just bite the bullet and get a reasonable data plan instead of having us fret about it…..]
With Zoe — and I could be totally off-base from my premises to my conclusions and at every step in between — I am under the impression that she is able to interact with the web because she has a collection of tools to help her. I have no idea of what those tools are, what their capabilities are, what other tools may be available, or how they hook into the site we see. I’d like to know if she is comfortable with the commenting system (again, it may be things that can be fixed through CSS!) before drawing a line in the sand.
If our current experts on accessibility and resource use are on board, I’m fully on board with this comment system. If they are fully against, I’d like to hear their objections and consider them fully, with thoughts of various workarounds and mitigations, before making an informed decision.
