This may be the most important speech I’ve ever made….
I bought this album without ever hearing it before. I think I was probably in 9th or 10th grade, and I went to the record store, and they didn’t have the album I was looking for.
But CDs were just starting to show up at the record store, and I was saving my paper route money to buy a CD player (about $450 for a nice Sony, circa 1983-1984).
On my way out of the record store I saw this CD album cover (that’s the cover in the video below) in the brand new CD section. I didn’t know a single song by the Grateful Dead yet, but I liked the cover, and if I bought a few CDs, it would motivate me to get the CD player sooner.
The album is called ‘Dead Set’, it’s a live recording from 1981.
When I bought the CD player a few months later, this was the first CD I ever played. And of course, I still have it 😁
This particular song, Brokedown Palace, stood out (to me) more than the others, and it’s still a favorite to this day 😎

My CPU meter was showing maxed, but the memory wasn’t getting into the “freeze machine” territory. After a while I realized I needed to hit the “X” on the menu bar to give it a break. Most everything rendered IF the site was totally unblocked from Brave protections.
There are many live recordings of this song, but the one they chose for Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and the Wailers album is my favorite, and the one most people are familiar with.
Unfortunately there is no video of this concert that I am aware of, but this is ‘the one’ 😎
Most of the time, when the audience ‘participates’ in a live song, it’s fun for the people in attendance, but it kind of messes up the song for recording purposes. This time was different, this time the audience helped create the definitive version.

FYI, with censorship there are a LOT of these videos that are no longer online… Youtube really wants some info shut down.
Here’s an easy method of making a backup of a video, using VLC to get the Codec info.
Copy a URL from a YouTube video, then open up VLC. From the Media menu select Open Network Stream(Ctrl+N) and paste in the URL. Click Play. When the video is playing, go to Tools > Codec Information. There is a box at the bottom called “Source”—copy the URL you find in that box.
Go back to your browser and paste the URL—it’s a temporary web address and will expire eventually—in the address bar and start playing the video. When you’re viewing the video in the browser, you’ll see an option to download the file to keep locally.
This is good for videos up to Full HD – but not higher, so no 4k streams. There are tools for that, but that’s more than I want to get into here.
