It became a blizzard a few hours ago.
I can hear the wind blowing HARD, but this is supposed to be over in about 8 hours.
There has been one significant glitch in power, a less-than-one-second blackout that reset my stereo even though it’s on a UPS (though interestingly my DVD player didn’t lose its place).
Though there is always the chance things will go south, I think this is going to turn out to be not a really big deal, here at least.
I have no idea how badly Denver got hammered, but then downtown Denver is roughly 60 miles away.

I think you mean that I am an endotherm; he’s an exotherm (heat from outside).
I was thinking that you radiated heat….different way of getting to the same observation. You can bundle up with blankets and slowly warm up inside; he’d just cool more slowly.
I’m saying you got the terms crossed. “Exotherm” is what we used to call “cold-blooded.” Endotherms generate their own body heat.

I’m using the adjective, you’re using the noun. They run differently. This is like when a bank says they’ll credit your account for a deposit — on your books, it shows up as a debit. The apparent contradiction is because the words have the same root — but they’re serving different functions.

Believe me, a LOT of accounting students get weeded out over debits and credits. And it’s really important to understand what’s going on there before studying more advanced topics.
To book something, debits always have to equal credits — and together they form an arrow that moves value from one place to another. The arrow is from credits (feathers) to debits (arrowhead).
When a bank takes your money and throws it in the vault where the bank manager rolls around in glee after doors are locked, they credit your account. They have an obligation to pay it back from the shared pool upon your request, but they now have (their debit) more money for nocturnal sojourns.
You now hold a promise that the bank will return your money (debit) in return for cash you held (credit).
That people can refer to the same transaction in different ways reflects the different points-of-view they have for that transaction.
At least with exo/endo therm (ic), there’s a subject wall between the two usages. Once a zoologist gets out of the chem class he’s probably required to take…he never needs to worry about it again. And as far as I know chem students don’t have to take zoology.
A not unrelated sidelight: At the US mint, back when our coins were made out of precious metals, whatever department had the bullion showed it as a liability on their books. They dug themselves out by passing it on to the next step in manufacture.

The book, by the way, was “From Mine To Mint” and it’s a pretty long but (to me at least) fascinating read; it goes into many technical aspects of getting from scrap metal to finished coins, using 19th century technology. (It does not talk much about extracting and refining ores, contrary to its name.) It also gives one a feel for what it was like to work there (I met the author once and told him I sometimes could imagine I was there). You even see some of the criteria they use to score people for certain jobs, and there are different chapters for the different branch mints, too, to give floor plans and discuss anything peculiar to their operations. It doesn’t go back all the way though, it starts in 1833 or so and doesn’t cover the *really* early mint. by Roger W. Burdette.
And speaking of weedout classes, I got this story from a coworker of mine, many moons ago:
He was told, in one of his engineering classes, “Look at the person to your left. Now look to the person on your right. If you’re still here two years from now, they won’t be.”
That university system–or at least that engineering program–had to weed out 2/3rds of its freshmen to make room for people who’d be graduating from community college and would want to step directly into their junior year at the university. That’s the way that particular state was set up.
The tragedy of it is, I’m sure those junior college grads were probably, on average, less capable than the people that got weeded out to make room for them.
My engineering program sure as hell weeded people out…but it didn’t replace them.
Some schools weed you out before you step through the door. Harvard, for instance. If you can get in, you’re likely to graduate. Others let you in relatively easily then try to kill you off. Mine was like that.
They even let people who had not studied pre-calc or even second year algebra yet, declare themselves as engineering majors. They didn’t last, or if they did it took them six years to finish.
I took CompSci 20 at the University of Casual Sun Bathing with my girlfriend. The guy was proud of his 60% drop/fail rate for that class. Had the same “look left, look right” story. Bastard. (We both did ok.)
From there, I only took one more CompSci class in the main sequence before they closed it completely to non-majors. Suckwad bastards. (Passed that one, too.)
The one we dreaded was, I believe, 453, software systems programming. Program Cyber machine language, and code down to the bare metal. It was notorious for taking up, all by itself, 20-30 hours a week. Add that to the usual heavy engineering workload and…
Right before my senior year they renumbered it 550 and it was no longer a requirement (now that it was grad level, it couldn’t be). I took it anyway. Ironically, the grader was a guy who couldn’t legally have taken the class with me. He had passed it (with flying colors) before it got renumbered, but his GPA was just below 3.0, too low for him to be allowed to take 500 level classes.
Somewhat later, a subsequent girlfriend came to me for help with some sort of higher-end assignment about using sparse data arrays. And I was like, “you had this last week, and you’re asking me about this when it is due TOMORROW?!?!?”
So, I looked into it, and the CSIL system (v7 UNIX on a VAX 11/780 with a half gig of RAM) fully allowed virtual memory for user processes. So I casually allocated a 1,000×1,000×1,000×1,000×1,000 array and put a couple of hundred data points in it — essentially a “screw this, let the OS handle it” move.
Worked, she got a C on that homework assignment.
She ended up getting a job at Xerox in SoCal after she graduated.
So she copied your work and got to work for Xerox.
…oh. I just realized.
That’s a petabyte, basically. So either that system had a phenomenal amount of storage for the virtual memory to use (how long ago was this?)…or it didn’t, but was okay so long as it didn’t have to actually pageswap more than a fraction of that array.
If the array is *really* sparse, then no problem.
Yeah, that’s a petabyte when the computer itself had a half-gig of memory and probably a hundred gig of disk. Oh, and I think the values were 16-bit ints, so that’s two petabytes.
But it ran!
And, of course, it should also be noted that it doesn’t take that much to have real petabytes today, 40 years later.
After all, you can easily have 6T for $110 —
You’d probably have to drop five figures to get to a petabyt…because you’d want to buy a NAS that could hold a hundred drives or so.

Just as an aside, CS30 required using 8″ floppy disks for writing DEC assembler. If I’d had to skin a deer and tan its leather, I might have learned something useful today.
I did have to use eight inchers once…to program a giant “micro” computer that used CP/M.

This guy (Dr. GVB for short) is actually associated with GAVI – a global vaccine group which is backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, among others. So it is very hard to dismiss him on authority. He’s VERY familiar with the scientific literature.

He has worked on the global Ebola response as well. He is very interested in the design of global responses to pandemics and specific diseases – and HOW THE RESPONSES NEED TO DIFFER, based on the nature of the pathogen.
This guy is WAY more credible than that BUSINESSMAN David Martin who says “the vaccines are not vaccines”. David Martin is being disingenuous. Yes, some of the new vaccines ARE related to gene therapy technology, and it is clearly part of the reason the industry wanted to push these vaccines. But that does NOT mean they are not vaccines.
In fact, the danger is – if Dr. GVB is right – the fact that they ARE vaccines, but not quite good enough of vaccines to wipe out the disease, thus conferring RESISTANCE to vaccination in general, and increasing the infections NATURE of the virus.
Indeed, this Dr. GVB actually says the vaccines are excellent technology (he even calls them “excellent weapons”), but they are the WRONG weapon from a public health standpoint.
He’s up with the literature on what is known about the disease, and he is basically saying that we are going to turn COVID-19 into a “super-bug” by TRAINING IT with non-working vaccines. And even worse, these particular vaccines which produce very specific antibodies will WEAKEN our immune systems toward FUTURE VARIANTS by making our immune systems focus on producing “specific but wrong antibodies”. There is some danger of immune enhancement (where the vaccines make the future infections WORSE), but he says just ignore that – the bigger danger to people who have been vaccinated is simply that they will not make enough BROAD-SPECTRUM ANTIBODIES because the vaccines have trained our immune systems to create highly specific but non-working antibodies, which essentially punch at boogeymen who are no longer there.
Bigger still, for me, he explains how I beat the disease without an abundance of specific antibodies – by NK cells.
Based on this message, COVID vaccines may be like “global warming” – a completely WRONG response to future events.
Until we know that this guy is WRONG, I cannot recommend getting a COVID vaccine. If he is right, it is the wrong thing to do both for PERSONAL HEALTH and for PUBLIC HEALTH.
Basically, YOUR VACCINE COULD KILL GRANDMA.

It’s becoming extremely clear to me that the corrupt pair of industry and the Fauci Empire wanted to push us toward gene therapies, the most useful route for THAT being “non-adenoviral vector” mRNA and DNA technologies, and THUS the most direct route to GET to the useful route being vaccines using that same technology.
If you call it a “vaccine” then you get legal immunity…and you get to experiment on the general public.

If I could give more than just one thumb up to this, I’d done so. This is exactly the thing: instead of the so-called vaccines, early intervention with hydrocloroquine and zinc, and prevention with zinc and vitamins and such would have worked to keep down this virus.
Instead we now have the first anniversary of what started out as a two-week lockdown, with deleterous effects on people. One friend that I talked with the other days knew of two suicides, that’s how bad this is.
And there is no end in sight, as new mutants appear, and the whack-a-mole and dodge-ball process continues. There have been cases of deaths by the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines that were “blamed in the media” (meaning not really official) as being due to the recipient “having antibodies and not knowing it”.
This may explain why in the Johnson+Johnson trials, they were testing the participants for antibodies BEFORE vaccination (with real or placebo), BUT were giving them the vaccine anyway. NO serious reactions in the small set of people involved.

The part the good doctor overlooks is our bodies desire to survive. He mentions the virus mutating to survive but ignores the need for those infected to survive. As we have seen, some don’t make it, but the vast majority do.
So even if the vaccine does mess us up to some extent, the human body is quite resilient with its will to survive. Despite the medications we constantly pump in to it.
I don’t think he overlooks it, but it’s hard to extract from what he’s saying. He’s not as explcit, but he says it. He basically says what you do, that the pathogens experienced by those they don’t kill (especially the young) train our immune systems to fight, and make us stronger, including the deployment of broads-spectrum antibodies, NK cells, etc. He’s a big fan of natural immunity and targeted, smart use of vaccines.
If these vax are intended to do something to the spike proteins, why not use any of the known drugs that also glom onto the spikes without all the other risks? Ivermectin for example.

“I understand that Tim Keller lives in the belly of the beast – that is, New York City,” says Knight. “But even he can’t help but notice the full-scale assault on children by the LGBTQ activists, who are now in virtually every school. They’ve affected media, they’ve affected entertainment.
“Has he ever heard of ‘Drag Queen Story Hour,’ for instance?” the columnist wonders.
Keller said hard times are on the way for the Church – largely because of its own actions.
“Things are getting bad for evangelicals,” he acknowledged. “I am not in denial about the fact that ten years from now, if you have evangelical convictions about sex and gender you may not be able to work for a major university, or for the government, or for a big corporation.
“[But] we shouldn’t be crybabies,” Keller continued. “We nurtured this – and Christian nationalists use that. And therefore, we brought it on ourselves.”
Knight takes issue with Keller’s accusation of evangelicals and other conservatives. “This charge that somehow the Republicans were exaggerating the threat posed by sexual revolutionaries is absurd. If anything, they were prescient,” he argues. “They predicted what’s happening right now all across America.”
According to Keller, the evangelical church is a breeding ground of sorts for Christian nationalism, which he defines as the belief that you cannot be a real American if you are a Muslim or a Jew, an immigrant, a non-white Christian, or even a political liberal.
“Evangelicals are not all Christian nationalists, but they are using us. They’re recruiting very well – because we made a lot of our people recruitable,” he stated.
Knight admits being let down by the famed pastor and author. “I had always thought better of Tim Keller, that he wouldn’t repeat the mantras of the Left,” he tells One News Now, “but apparently I’ll have to be disappointed.”

So the wife who joined me at the end of last week for a work trip to Spokane, WA area is still stranded in Salt Lake. We were planning to return her back to Denver on Sunday. I had to be in Roswell, NM late Sunday so no way I was going back to Denver.
Her flight late Sunday was cancelled and her re-scheduled Monday afternoon flight was also. Essentially the airport won’t really get going until Tuesday. The main road to the airport was essentially closed also so a total mess.
And according to my son the snow drifts piled up at the top of our street and cars were getting stuck. So getting in and out of the hood was a problem. They never plow those side roads so we are on our own.
The good news, the Alien Museum in Roswell is open. May have to work it in.
No fun… making lemonade though!

To clarify that first paragraph, which is incomplete, this is the text of the 14th Amendment, Section 3 (emphasis mine). It’s also known as the “Disqualification Clause.”
The second paragraph is also oddly worded, beginning with “A State.” States can’t be sworn in, only individuals.

The escape clause I had in mind was that congress can, by a 2/3rds vote, remove the disqualification.
Make it clear to 90 percent of congress that you’re pursuing this, they’ll have a bill ready to go. Whether they can do it before or at the moment they’re found guilty, is another question.
One weasely out of course would be for them to claim that they’re following the constitution…as THEY interpret it. That won’t work so well for those times they violated the procedures spelled out therein, but we’ve already seen how the “limited” powers given to the fedgov are very, very elastic.
Not religious myself but this John Adams quote pretty much nails it. “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other”.

Shampeachment Jr. began on January 13 with the House vote, and then PDJT was acquitted in the Senate on February 13, so it’s not clear whether the House could have used the fake story, which is said to have been published two months ago. I suppose it could have been used in the Senate trial.

There are two subjects where there is so much “slang” that you have to be cautious what you say lest some wiseacre “misinterpret” what you say and turn it into a joke…one is sexual activity, and the other is drugs. (How many different ways are there to refer to marijuana in some form or anotherr, and how many of them are otherwise innocuous words you now have to be careful with, like “joint” and “roach”?)
I still have books–from the mid 20th century UK, and earlier, where a building is called an “erection.” Because someone erected it. (Remember the erector set? You erected things with it.)
Indeed the word “sex” itself doesn’t necessarily mean “doing the deed”, you still see paperwork out there asking you to specify M or F (not “Sure! Now?” and “nope”) with “Sex:” Nowadays people use “gender” to refer to male/female, but that’s really a misuse of that word. But we’re stuck with it because “sex” has double or even triple meanings now.

Silicon Valley was originally populated with a bunch of “tilt-up” buidings. You do a conventional foundation and pour a conventional slab on it. Then you use wooden frameworks on the slab to lay out a bunch of additional modules. You paint them and the slab with a special goo, then pour all the additional modules just like another slab. When everything is cured, you take all the wooden forms off and use a crane to pull the top layer (the walls) off the bottom layer (the floor) and set the pieces upright around the edge of the bottom slab, bracing them and bolting them together as you go.
You the build the ceiling conventionally out of wood — but if your engineer is competent, it forms a plenum that keeps the walls from falling over. You can then remove the bracing. They’re cheap, fast, and amazingly earthquake resistant when done.
And, yes, the crane companies that do tilt-ups are often called erection companies.
This method is still in use, in fact I now work in a building I witnessed being built in this manner.
I used to work in one that I not only witnessed getting built — the contractor went bankrupt early on in the project and I had to step in as the owner’s representative to GC the rest of the job.
My experience was more vicarious. I worked for the first tenant in the first building, and watched the others go up. Now I work for a tenant in one of the other buildings.

The bad news is there was a lot of existing laws, rulings quoted in the article that approve of required vaccinations per State order. This can still get ugly with Biteme in charge. I mean signing orders that someone else is making up.
The obvious solution is to leave the government schools.
We are running out of excuses. As Christians, as anyone with a modicum of intellect, we have to admit government schools are an epic failure.
Decentralizing education would be an immediate improvement. I would love to see retired teachers offer to start small, private neighborhood schools, like the one room schoolhouse of yore.
While I agree that government schools should be torpedoed, the hierarchy of education have all been trained in the same manner, so I don’t know that much would change.
Plus, kids do need to be with people their own age, which is my only beef with homeschooling. One of the swim teams my brothers were on, there were home schooled kids who were there mostly for socialization. Same with some other activities like choir.

I wouldn’t have questioned it…but lately I’ve been pondering the concept of ‘generations’.
Sorting people into age groups fosters an us-versus-them mentality.
Our ancestors didn’t sort children by age group; they put them all together and the older ones were told to look after the younger ones.
The older ones may have resented having that responsibility thrust on them…but it made them more eager to grow up & join the adults, instead of avoiding it like what is going on today.
On the whole, sorting people by age groups has led to animosity between those age groups…
Such as the way that young people hate old people and vice versa.
So, I dunno…I’m now wondering if this all part of a long-term plan to dehumanize us.
Kids need a little of everything for good socialization.

I can already see the narrative being set up: Make unrealistic projections about vaccine participation rates, then blame Trump supporters when the unrealistic projections obviously don’t pan out.

If you want to see what a sewage treatment facility looks like, one of the Bill & Ted movies has some scenes from a futuristic “Bill & Ted University” — that was filmed at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation plant in the San Fernando Valley. My father was involved in building that (no, he’s not Donald C. Tillman). The gardens that the actors are wandering through were designed by a landscape architect named Wong, and a favorite anecdote is when — as a practical joke — official paint colors were used for a street sign saying “Wong Way” for opening day.
Further, there is often a legal requirement that sanitary districts be audited…..and I logged a bunch of the audit hours required to become a CPA by auditing sanitary districts. It helped that I understood how they worked.
