I’m about halfway through. Interesting that Kissinger believes the Chinese are looking for international respect as one of their motivating factors in how they organize their society around their economic policies.
That seems nuts to me, a citizen of a “liberal democracy.” The Chinese will never gain the respect of the West as long as they tyrannize, enslave, and mistreat their citizens.
I have never been a fan of Kissinger but this is a worthwhile interview.
One big takeaway is Kissinger’s assertion that we won’t make much progress until we get over flagellating ourselves for past sins and gain confidence in our ability to create positive changes.
I take that as a big rebuke to the Left in America. He put some of the blame on academia for it, too.
Hated how he kept talking about the “world order” but glad he never said New World Order. 🙃

This is totally off topic. Sorry. But after my 6 freezing days of being without power because of an ice storm, I’m seriously contemplating getting a portable generator and having a manual transfer switch put in. We’ve only had 2 ice storms in the last 20 years I’ve lived here, and this is the only time I’ve ever had to go that long without power. But I really DON’T want to go through that experience again. And if we’re going into a grand solar minimum, this could actually happen a bit more often. I’ve found one I like, has good reviews, will power all the important stuff, uses dual fuel, and is on sale. I know those of you who live in Florida or other states with frequent hurricanes probably already are equipped. But here, it’s not like we frequently have weather that takes out the power. Am I being overly paranoid, or does this sound like a good idea?
It’s not a bad idea, however for optimal results we’d need to know (in general terms): (a) where you are; (b) what kind of vehicle(s) you have available; (c) whether you have been mobile during the last six days.
Part of what this gets to is that you can’t leave gas engines (or diesel) around with full tanks for over a year and expect them to work. SteveinCO has a generator that he left for a bit and it’s thoroughly gunked-up and unusable.
But that does not happen with propane. If the house is gas heated, then it is relatively simple to tap into the propane supply (usually over 400 gallons) and run the generator exclusively on propane.
If it was my rig, I’d never put gasoline in it.
Yeah, I already had that discussion with my nephew, who is a contractor and uses a portable generator a lot. That’s why I’d get a dual fuel one and use propane. Much cleaner and easier to deal with.
Do you run your house on propane?
No – natural gas. But propane is in ready supply around here. And I’m told you can store propane tanks for a long time.
For a six-day power outage, you’ll need quite a bit of it — which is one reason I was asking about your mobility. If you have to drive to town to get more, can you do it?
Absolutely. I actually drove around quite a bit just to warm up. 😀
I use propane and electric. Have a 500 gallon tank. They fill it to 80 percent to account for expansion during hot weather. In the winter, I typically use 5 percent of the tank’s gauge per week to run a gas backup furnace to the heat pump and a small kitchen heat stove. The house is about 3500 sq ft. Perhaps this example will help someone estimating propane usage. When I refill at 30 percent, the propane vendor comes out to refill it for me.
Oh and by the time they come to refill it, they add almost 300 gallons.

No, it stayed on. But the problem is, the furnace fan runs on electricity. So I had hot water but no heat.
Random thought — what about plumbing a non-portable natural gas generator straight into your natural gas supply? No fuel worries, and you can even get them with automatic cutover that’s even fast enough to keep your computers running (if they’re on UPS’s).
I thought about it, but the cost difference is pretty big. And I don’t think I’m going to be encountering this situation often enough that it would really be worth the cost.

Belonging to a club of eccentrics who build engines out of random chunks of metal gives you an interesting perspective on things — the major difference in cost is most likely due to regulations.

He’s local. But his generator he takes out on a job site really isn’t enough to power the important stuff I would want powered in that kind of situation.

Then you know a lot about propane. It is also about 112 octane but produces 4% less power than gasoline. That is a negligible difference for what you are doing with it.
I’ve been reading up a lot on them lately. Most of the ones I’m looking at will run about 11 hours on gas at half load and around 10 hours on propane. But in the same situation I was in, I wouldn’t run it 24 hours a day. I’d run it to heat up the house and keep the refrig/freezer cold, and then shut it down for awhile.
Do they have separate propane tanks, or would you have to take the whole generator to a propane refill station?
They come with a hose you just hook up to the propane tank. So it’s really a pretty easy setup.
One key thing to look at is how loud they are, considering they’ll be installed next to your electric panel.
Actually, the transfer switch is connected to an outside plug that you hook up your 30 amp generator outlet to. The panel goes right next to your circuit breaker panel, then you run conduit out to your outside plug. I would have them put that in my back yard.
Right next to your obnoxious neighbor’s study?
So, I know this is going to sound paranoid and weird (what else is new?), but I wouldn’t want to be driving a propane tank around unless I had plenty of ventilation. This isn’t a problem for an outdoor grill, because you generally only use them when the weather is warm enough to drive around with your windows down…..but we’re talking cold weather. Do you have a pickup or similar so that a leaky fill won’t gas you in your car?
Good point. I have an SUV, but there is a gas station with propane about 12 blocks from me. I could deal with the cold for that long.
Alternatively, with an SUV, you could easily have a small trailer or bike carrier that attached on the back.
Can your nephew get a good deal for you on a transfer switch? Considering what they are and what they do, the seem wildly overpriced as a project around here (Silicon Valley) [probably due to California’s lawsuit-happy legal beagles].
Yeah, he probably can and probably knows a good electrician to set it up. Home Depot has them about $200-$400. He probably has a better source. I’m still gaming this out, so will have to have that discussion before I do it.

OK, next weird thought…..
Nephew buys the generator, takes it off his taxes. You have a contractual right to have it delivered to your place whenever the power goes out for a cost of (insert cost of generator net of taxes saved here). During the summer, he can now use both generators.
Round two, same thought — which rates apply depends on whether nephew is a corporation or a Schedule C contractor.
Nephew buys generator, immediately expenses under section 179. You write contract stating that it is to be kept at your house during cold season and moved to your house during any power interruptions…..nephew ensures it is kept in running order and may use it at all other times, for which you pay a percentage of the cost.
Depending on what state you’re in, and what local taxes are, this might be quite a discount. If you’re State income tax is 6%, the Federal self-employment tax 15%, and the Federal income tax at 28%, your net investment would be about half the cost of the generator — and you get everything you want.
You still have to run them periodically, to ensure that stuff stays lubricated.
Our generator has saved our bacon several times.
I recommend them. Ours is a Generac. About a decade old now.
One caveat: you will need to start them up every few months and use Stabil to keep them in good working order.
Propane or gas?
Gas. We didn’t have propane when we bought it.
Yup. Have two small generators. Run them ~first of every month, for twenty minutes.
Always put use Stabil in our gas cans/generators. Every three months we dump the gas in our gas cans in the truck. Then, Stabil in the gas cans, refill the gas cans.
Rinse. Repeat.
Chain saws also started ~first of every month.
You know the drill. 😁
I bought a Mr. Heater Buddy propane heater and tank of propane last winter because I was concerned they were going to attack the power grid, and then I’d have no heat for days. I didn’t end up using it, but the peace of mind that I wouldn’t freeze was worth the money. You hope you never have to use it, but if you’re in a situation where you need one, it’s there.
You have to be very careful with propane heaters indoors. They must take their combustion air from outside and return combustion products to outside.
So propane stoves and ovens are dangerous? Somebody better tell all those people that own RVs and/or run their houses on propane.
I know someone who got carbon monoxide poisoning from a natural gas furnace in her (rented) house. Yes, they’re dangerous.
Properly designed, built, and maintained, the danger is minimal. Small propane heaters may not be appropriate for where they are used — that’s a design problem. Built-in heaters are generally inspected for code when installed….but are not necessarily maintained properly. Both can be hazardous or fatal.

The ones that are installed in RVs and houses, are usually installed with venting to the outside.
I think the difference here is…portable vs installed.
Portable propane heaters are considered dangerous because some people have died from using them without adequate venting.

How is a propane stovetop vented? I never heard of such a thing.
There was a hood vent over the one in an RV that we had for awhile.
There were other vents for the frig and oven.
We use propane for our range. We vent to outside.
I appreciate the warning, and certainly encourage anyone interested in portable propane heaters to read up on how to operate them safely. I was concerned about carbon monoxide, too, so I spent a lot of time reading about how to operate them safely. Like pgroup alluded to, they’re popular among RV enthusiasts and people who use off-grid cabins, so there’s plenty of discussion to be found about it online.

Same here, sort of. Dummies in NV have both legislated and voted for increasing mandatory reliance on UNRELIABLE renewable energy. My estimate is we’ll start seeing brown outs and black outs, as CA does EVERY year. Stoopid is, as stoopid does – NV & CA.

As an aside, daughter in TX learned their lesson, with the recent extended freeze and power outage. They opted for an automatic transfer switch, whole home generator run on natural gas. They went with Generac. Over the years, I have read many good reviews for Generac.
Take this with a grain of salt, as it is based on internet reviews. Recently, I read Chyna bought Generac. Generac reliability has dropped. Wait times for Generac repair parts can be significant. Latter blamed on covid, as every business short coming these days claims Covid did it.
So sorry Miss Linda, after peronally suffering 3 days of Snowmageddon, I can’t even fathom 6 days. There’s a HUGE difference being without power in heat vs. cold. With heat you’re uncomfortable but you can manage, but with cold, it’s life threatening.
I’ve thought of getting a generator before because of hurricanes. But in reality, they’re so rare to affect where I live (90 miles inland), I’ve only lost power once for 2 days. But no power in Texas due to a rare ice storm is something I never would’ve expected (and DO NOT expect to happen again!). All that to say a generator would be nice to have, but I’m still not convinced I ‘need’ one.

I’ve owned water lilies. If you can’t see down the stem to where it comes off the rhizome, the water is full of gronk. Mind you, it’s likely just “teeming with life” and not unhealthy or polluted — but would make a mess of your T-rex suit nevertheless.
Water lilies grow not unlike gingers (edible and decorative) — there’s a large rhizome, which occasionally throws “root clusters” out the bottom and “stem clusters” out the top. As the rhizome elongates, it occasionally forks, and any segment with a root cluster and a stem cluster can become a new plant. Water lilies are unusual in that their cut or broken rhizomes can “flood” if kept underwater, and will rot instead of growing. If they go fully dormant, it’s best to slice’n’dice ’em then and keep ’em in wet sawdust for about a week before replanting underwater.
In reference to “teeming with life”…..the Fiancee and I used to frequently dive off Monterey. When you’re on the surface, shouting to try to communicate last-minute info (or final info, if post-dive), it’s not unusual to catch a bit of a rogue wave that you have to spit out.
We were doing that one time in thick kelp, and before I managed to spit it out….it squirmed. There’s about a 98% chance that it was a “kelp gribble” — a harmless little kelp-colored isopod that is normally found on kelp leaves. See ’em all the time. Don’t want ’em in our mouths.
But that will be forever remembered as our “kelp forests are teeming with life” moment.
Kew Gardens has waterlilies that grow without standing water. Sadly, they’re probably extinct in the wild — they collected their sample from where the local government was putting a road, and couldn’t find them again when they returned to the site.
We have those at MoBot. They go out into the reflecting pools in the summer and back to the greenhouse has winter approaches.

I realize this is an emotional topic for you but slow down and think it through.
I have never said there weren’t GOPe/RINOs in the party. I have said the opposite – that their precense should motivate us more and is why we should not be manipulated or influenced into quitting or becoming less involved.
I have stated that the GOP writ large is not all GOPe/RINOs, that there are many MAGA conservatives working hard. SC is a case in point.
MAGA is working Hard in SC … they came to Woods to ask him to run. There are many who are Excited to Vote for Woods in the SC GOP. He ONLY has a chance to win BECAUSE there are MAGA people in place to vote for him.
Wonderful that a MAGA candidate is stepping forward. This is exactly what we need in all positions of GOP leadership, committee chairs, committee members and voting membership.
Of course there are GOPe/RINOs in the party – that is why MAGA conservatives MUST be involved if we want victory and this is NO time to quit, to give up, to leave those MAGA conservatives who have gained positions of leadership and are working hard. Quitters aren’t Winners, according to President Trump.
Again, it is the sweeping generalizations that are almost always incorrect because there are MAGA conservatives who have been working hard in the county and state GOPs and are RNC members and they have been doing so since June of 2015 and some since the TEA Party.
We (MAGA conservatives) have gained momentum since 2016 and many of us have now been involved for years and are elected leaders or involved and committee chairs and committee members, etc. Starting a new party &/or becoming uninvolved with the GOP is Not the viable answer, no matter how tempting because of specific GOP elected politicians or specific GOP party leaders.
Yes, there are RINOs and GOPe in the GOP … that is WHY I have Long advocated for MAGA to be involved. We have MUCH work to do and many of us have been doing it since 2016/Trump Era and some since the TEA Party. Please join us – we need More to be More effective!

I have two grandchildren graduating from High school this year with one only three people can attend the other is virtual gratuation. There is no prom no party . They have not visited all Universities they have been accepted too because of covid.
They need to have appointments some as late as end of April . They have not been able to get together with friends no dating no place to go. CT is finally opening a little.
This is not hard on me to not get out as I normally would and travel but it is so much harder for young people. I am glad my grandchildren are surrounded with great parents and the kids are not depressed.

I looked up another state’s voter registration numbers today. This time, Arizona. Not all states have updated their numbers to what they were at election time in 2020, but some have.
Arizona had a population of 7,378,490 as of August 7, 2020. The number of registered voters was 3,262,000, making 60.8% of the population registered.
As of November 3, 2020, the population was 7,520,100, for a population increase of 141,610. The number of registered voters rose to 4,281,152, for an increase of 1,019,152.
So in 88 days, over a million people supposedly registered to vote in Arizona? Not buying it.

I was reading this article about the Evergreen ship problem this morning, and it struck me that it almost sounds like blackmail.
Who is blackmailing whom is the question. The ship is stuck, the CEO doesn’t think it can be moved, Egypt does, but wants to “inspect” the ship. Egypt doesn’t have the equipment to remove the containers. Who doesn’t want the containers removed?

Well, I went to 5 pm Mass at the Cathedral Basilica yesterday, and I’m here to tell you that 80% of the pews available had people in them, mostly young, too. Although, that Church is within walking distance of one of the medical schools and has the only last minute Mass in that part of town.

Don’t we prefer accurate info? Do we expect to always have all others take stats without links or with links that prove inaccurate at our word? If we post something inaccurate, do why be upset with comments that correct or offer different points of view, data, stats, &/or info?
You just don’t seem to grasp that your style turns off some folks here. And when you come back to defend yourself you do a pretty good job of continuing to dig the hole a little deeper.

I am only going to enter this discussion to say this:
These are the exact kinds of statements that turn people off.
Of course this isn’t about “no posting contrary info.” The way you worded that is a dig at people here, making them look emotional rather than rational.
And you do it with two emotions — cheerfulness and perplexity — cheerfully “rising above” the people who are too “emotional” in their responses to you, and being perplexed at their reactions to you (“smh”).
I say this from observing at a distance on many occasions: It comes across as superiority and looking down on people. It comes across as you being the one who is in control of herself, while others are not, and then your being amazed at their lack of self-control — while you don’t seem to understand that your style and lack of self-awareness are, in part, fueling their reaction. And if one looks deeper, one can see that it appears to have been set up that way, to elevate yourself at others’ expense, whether you’re aware of it or intend that or not.
When you “shake your head” at people, imply they don’t want facts, state they aren’t doing enough, etc. — without a shred of introspection or self-awareness or wondering why they might be reacting to you as they are, that is one of the things that causes problems.
Unfortunately, there is now a history of this kind of interaction and people are on edge and reacting to every little thing. It would take a lot of circumspection and holding their tongues on both sides for it to stop. It would also take introspection to see what one is doing to trigger others. And it would take respect for their reactions instead of merely blame.
We are all on the same side. Your attention to detail and accuracy are assets. There should be a way for this to de-escalate without denigrating one another.
Dismissing someone’s argument as “I realize this is an emotional topic for you but slow down” is the equivalent of saying “Calm down” or “Are you on your period?” You know damn well what kind of reaction that’s going to bring out, we all know what kind of reaction that’s going to bring out, and playing the victim here–“Oh poor me, what did I do wrong?“–isn’t fooling anyone.
C’mon. You are smarter than this. We, the community, are smarter than this. If you really, truly want to help MAGA, then stop with the pretense. Update on the voter registration “news” story yesterday:
-since we still have no idea were the original stats came from as the original poster refuses to link to the stats they quoted, I have found the MI stats to be completely inaccurate as there were significantly more voters registered in 2018 than quoted by the original commenter for 8/2020. There are many things to investigate, call out and follow up on but this was fake news so we can move on from that rabbit trail

Missoula County is not a huge population, which probably helps with finding info fast.
When the order went out that counties “could” do all mail-in voting, my county opted to do a variation on that. For some non-national elections in the past (where it is only for local stuff like the school board), we have had mail-in-only voting, and it was run the same way for Nov. 2020. At the time, I was very concerned and corresponded with the county Election Supervisor. She said that they decided not to open polls for fear that it would actually suppress voter turn out. We only had ballots mailed to registered voters, which is how it has been done before.
I am not certain, but I doubt that Missoula County had ever run an election with mail-in ballots only. And since it is a very liberal area, I would bet the farm that there were lots of leftists figuring out ways to cheat.
With the new governor, and a Republican House and Senate, I’ll bet this gets investigated right quick. We’ll see what happens.

Following South Dakota lawmakers rejecting Gov. Kristi Noem’s request for revisions of House Bill 1217, legislation to protect women’s athletes rights under federal statute Title IX, the governor is issuing two executive orders to protect women from competing against biological men who consider themselves transgender women at the high school and collegiate level.
“Only girls should play girls’ sports. Given the legislature’s failure to accept my proposed revisions to HB 1217, I am immediately signing two executive orders to address this issue: one to protect fairness in K-12 athletics, and another to do so in college athletics. (1/3),” Noem posted on Twitter on Monday.
“Additionally, I will be working with legislative leaders to schedule a special legislative session in late May or early June. The special session will address this important issue, as well others (medicinal marijuana and the latest federal spending package.) (2/3),” Noem tweeted.

That’s good, but the next governor can just undo EOs. This comes across as saving her political hide, IMO. But if she can lead the legislature to put something substantive into law, that will go a long way toward redeeming her.
MAYBE, Kristi was CORRECT in vetoing the legislation.
Kristi Noem, the ONLY GOVERNOR who 100% stood up for American RIGHTS throughout the Covid hysteria.
Yet so many ready to cast Kristi aside so easily.
I’m not casting her aside. We just need solid stances on issues, and she didn’t appear to take one when other governors did. It’s unfortunate that we have been let down by so many “conservative” politicians that we question everything and need to be shown consistently that they are with us. I will be glad if she can win on this issue.

While I certainly don’t know for sure, I tend to side with Kristi. her stand on Rights WAS and IS stand out superb decision making, in the face of withering criticism.
Surely wish Kristi was my governor. Along with DeSantis.
I have been a big fan of Noem for a long time now. I have been holding my fire waiting to see the ultimate resolution that comes from this before I count her out. So I’m still waiting.
The whole South Dakota sports bill controversy seemed like a coordinated and deliberate attempt to sabotage Kristi’s career as “punishment” for going against the COVID narrative and supporting Trump. They’re trying to divide and conquer MAGA.

I no longer trust: the media, US gov’t, CDC, WHO, US medical system, most doctors (some good ones still exist), courts & judges, elections, Dept of Health, Dept of Edu, FDA, vaccines & the Pope. Before 2020, I also believed most people were fairly intelligent. I was wrong.

We have used all of the Connor Boyack economic books for children and they are Great.
Now I have come across a book by the author that is for adults. It isn’t new – published in 2014 – but I just now discovered it. I have just found the book and have not read it but it looks good and as appropriate (if not more so) than it was in 2014. Since I have not yet read it, I am not recommending it but am sharing what I think will be a good book.
Very expensive on amazon ($20+) so went looking for a better deal or more reviews before I bought it at amazon.

JAMA has also lost there way from hard science, from data and facts of desires, wishes, feelings and emotions. Sad to see the degration of even the medical profession as it bows to the social warrior generation over real science and information.
My parents were subscribers back into the early ’60’s, and I was a subscriber until well into the 1980’s, when I noticed that the actual science had become garbage and was frequently an attempt to gloss some social preaching. They had walked away from me, and so I walked away from them.
Same is true for National Geographic. When they went woke, they became useless to me.
Sadly, Make: is looking more and more questionable of late.
