Well, tried to post on yesterrday’s regarding Kash Patel being investigated for leaking. Hi, Wheatie2. Sorry to say I can’t even like comments any longer in “reader” which I used to do. Greetings to Sylvia and PGroup2 and cthulhu and whoever is here.

Believe it or not, I’m still looking at how readers function. In the meantime, I found out that my father is now legally blind because of cumulative effects from his treatments for retinal detachment. In the meantime, the Fiancee discovered that an external hose bib was leaking and creating a swamp outside and that consumed the afternoon. Plus, I’ve got the whole house fan’s motor isolated and can’t figure out the next step to take it apart.
Replacement unit = $270. No manufacturing info on bare motor. Had four bolts holding faces together — all four removed, nothing moves….may be potted.
I would suspect that the rotor is attached to the face with the shaft, and that the base has the wires running into it….but nothing is wiggling to support this hypothesis.
If it popped open, I could then see if the bearings were adequately lubricated and the brushes appropriately clean, then see if it (1) worked and (2) didn’t squeak. But since it was squeaking and my “spray and pray” repair only caused it to cease working, I suspect that the brushes got fouled and it could use a more precise lube.
“spray and pray ” lol, reminds me of the “poke and hope” fault finding in a Strowger exchange of yore.
We know that a generic electric motor has copper coils surrounding a rotor, which likely also has copper coils (or permanent magnets, but likely copper coils). If the innards has copper coils, there are “brushes” to conduct electricity in and out of the core. Regardless of such brushes, there are bearings at the top and bottom of the rotor to ease its rotation. Since it was squeaking, bearings needed attention.
If I could get the bottom and top apart, I could wipe a paper towel across the brushes and squirt extra lube in the bearings and save $270 and not discard something already built. But neither the top nor bottom wants to detach.
Disclaimer : I’ve never met or even seen the type of fan you’re working on.
Am curious though, if there’s no information on the motor plate why you think it’s a universal motor with brushes and a com, rather than a squirral cage induction motor.The latter, I think would be the general choice for a single speed fan.
It’s a dual speed fan, and there are enough vent slots to observe the rotor turn while the coils sit. If I could get past the caps, my hypotheses might change.
If the end plates appear stuck even after you’ve removed the through bolts, it may well be that it’s the tightness of the ball races on the shaft and end plates.
If the caps weren’t behaving like a brick, I might think bearings were involved…..but the caps aren’t moving.
The end bells get caught on the bearings sometimes.
I’d be tempted to get it on the bench and apply a soft mallet around the joint and maybe improvise some kind of bearing puller on the end plates. being a bit careful at the free end of the shaft, as if it’s a switch start motor there will be a centrifugal switch there which powers the start winding.

From inspection, there is a structure of layered plates in the middle. On the bottom, there is a cap with a pressed-in bearing in the middle (shiny vs. black). In one side of the cap, power enters the motor. On top, there are no apparent bearings, but there is a cap with the shaft passing through it.
My guess is that the top cap comes off, the top bearings are underneath, the rotor pulls out with the brushes on the bottom, and there is a bearing on the bottom.
Have you looked at Howard Sams’ website? They have docs on just about everything (though probably not free)… gentle gearpuller sounds like a good idea, if only to free things up a bit if they’re seized/tight…

Just as another oddity to be related and enjoyed….
It is not unusual for me to be quaffing an ale or lager while here in the evenings. And this has made me a steady customer of same at the local Lucky’s — especially when they started running beer coupons in the local advertising delivered by mail.
And, then, a few years back, I learned about the jackpot.
Every few months back at Corporate HQ, their Marketing Department (second up against the wall after the Revolution, after Sirius Cybernetics’), sends a new shelf map for the local supermarket’s beer cooler. Someone has to go through all the beers on display and rearrange them, add a bunch of new ones, and pull the ones that no longer have allocated space. This is known, colloquially, as a “beer reset”. [They also have “wine resets” and “liquor resets”.]
As the designated affable local sot, personnel now let me know about these in advance and give me first run among the pulls. Previous cycles have had things like $8 12-packs and $4 6-packs. This cycle pulled a bunch of singles and packed ’em into banana boxes at $10/box. I nabbed two boxes.
Supermarket staff are happy because they don’t have to deal with this scrap for very long, I’m happy to try things that are unusual at that sort of price, Corporate Marketing is happy they never have to deal with real people who want products instead of product-placement fees and kickbacks. It’s a win-win-win.
I’m currently quaffing a Track Seven Brewing Company “Left Eye Right Eye” double IPA out of Sacramento, CA. I would never have bought it otherwise. It’s pretty good. Too bad the marketing guys didn’t stay bought.
Oh, and the reason I went into such detail….if you have similar inclinations, see if your local supermarket does the same thing. It’s probably SOP in the supermarket biz.
Resets in grocery are February and July August ish. Right after Christmas and just before school starts again, but then it also depends on individual store sales.
I think different parts of the store run on different cycles. This one just happened (they left one of the pages of the new layout in the banana box).
I ‘ve been through “many beer resets in my career. The “pulled” product, we referred to as disc (discontinued). Usually the major distributor does the reset after corporate approval, unless of course the smaller ones can come up with “incentives” wink wink.
NO one wants the disc product, we would actually toss most of it out, the distributor already made his $$ off it so he’s not taking it back. In NY there’s actually a law that says they can only swap out, out dated product. So the store eats the loss. I like you have tried many new beers that way, but I had the inside scoop on all the new stuff too!! Which was a win win for me.

I did however see ralphs had tri tip at 3.99. The meat guy let me know they accidentally got prime cut in..at 3.99 a lb. So I bought3 packs plus the regular tri tip steak.
Beer resets only happen every 4-6 months. They are very infrequent. And this one blew out a LARGE number of fruit-infused beers….almost like someone was very wrong in predicting a major boom in that garbage.
I even have one (I’ve got to try one before I get ditch it) cucumber-mint lager. Probably AKA “beer farts in a can”.
Soak a cucumber in a jar of vodka. Helluva kick after three days and you can drink the juice.
Or shoot some Vodka into a watermelon (pureeing the melon with a stick mixer from the outside optional)…

If you’ve been living in one place and shopping at the local supermarket for years, you should be learning the players and the game.
One beautiful thing about the real America is that tradesmen hold nothing back if you take a real interest in what they’re doing (and treat them well otherwise). Other places frequently treat such things as “trade secrets” and “guild insider knowledge”, but in America, they will tell you every trick so that you can fully appreciate their work.
My dad taught me to always have coolers for water and sodas for tradesmen; to provide coffee and donuts in the morning; and to have seats and shade for lunches. Further, welcome them onto the property with an emphasis on safety and have appropriate safety equipment on-hand…..along with things like fans for comfort when appropriate.
In the trades, one encounters many situations each day where you can do a quick kludge to slip something past an inspector, or take a little longer and do it right. Guys on my jobs are more likely to do it right. Every so often, they even delight me — sometimes years later….like I’ll discover a circuit is labeled to a breaker, or the duct routing my AC guy did while I wasn’t looking.

I had never heard of such stuff, but fun to have history in your hands even if you don’t know all the tales attached to the artifact. 🙂

I agree with you, though I’m not sure about the minorities being least able to protect themselves, unless the argument is that minorities predominantly live in urban blue state areas with strict gun control laws and that is why it’s harder for minorities to protect themselves.
The point I was trying to make is that no matter what ‘gun control’ laws are passed, the only people who will obey them are law abiding Americans.
Criminals won’t obey the ‘gun control’ laws, because… they’re criminals.
So criminals end up being the only people who have guns.
The Dims all know this of course, and so do the RINOs, they’re all liars. They are doing what corrupt governments always do, which is to remove the ability of the People to protect themselves from the government’s tyranny.
The nice thing about the observation I made is that you can blow up any ‘gun control’ argument the criminal political-class makes, with just those 5 words.

Many people on this site are too retired or too senior to be counseled by this, but maybe someone will profit…..
When you interact with your superior, try not to bring them problems; instead, bring them solutions.
Don’t say, “we’re understaffed”; say, “we should try recruiting from schools”. Don’t say, “people are always taking sick days on Friday”; say, “maybe we should pay clerks an extra $1 an hour for Mondays and Fridays, while paying $0.50 less on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.”
They may not be the BEST solutions, or even remotely practical ones, but most supervisors will be stunned that you made the attempt and look upon you with favor afterwards. And they will be alerted to the underlying problem in a way that doesn’t make YOU look like a whiner.
I’ve seen far too many instances of managers who were stunned that there was a problem they were unaware of for years, to want to put “mention the problem even if you have no idea how to solve it” at the bottom of the heap of possible things to do.
Though tone goes a long way to distinguish between “whining” and “oh, by the way there’s something you should know about…”

“LOUISIANA: Five people were hospitalised after being shot and critically injured in a drive-by shooting at a liquor store in Shreveport, Louisiana, CBS-affiliated television station KSLA reported late on Sunday (Apr 19).

A lot of this is MEDIA ATTENTION. The entire media is on a “find and report all shootings” kick. They’re also twisting them. There was a report of one drive-by that I read about which was totally misrepresented. It was a drug/gang revenge attack that was “de-racified” and “de-motive-ated” to make it sound completely different from what it was.
The media is no longer reporting factually to enlighten – they’re reporting to CREATE FALSE CONCERNS.

I like the idea of a Forum…there’s a difference between the Forum and a Blog, though, right ?
way I understand it…a Forum consists of posts that are actually Threads…each post generates its own “thread” of Replies.
and each Post is about a Topic…any Topic.
It’s easier to organize.
We could have a “sub forum” on Covid, for instance, and a topic for each significant article, etc. People less interested in the issue could just avoid that whole sub-forum.
Having seen the way this place here works, though I imagine we’ll have issues with two or three people posting topics about the same thing, a LOT. Most forums have moderators who will merge those posts. I don’t quite see Wolf doing that.
Wolf will probably have seen the possibilities for various categories: coronavirus, Trump, the GOP, humour, memes, etc.
The lowest rated — or commented on — posts can sink to the bottom in each category. Wolf can mark the most popular as stickies in each category.
No doubt he has been thinking about how this will work for months.
I’m very familiar with the pleasures and perils of forums – but SIZE makes so much difference in organization, we will no doubt run into “issues” every step of the way. Issues basically never go away on forums, same as blog sites.
One of the biggest wastes of time is organization that’s never needed, but one of the biggest headaches is organization that is needed and never done. We will have to avoid both.

I can’t say that I know this from having examined every line of code, but from the functionality, it appears that site registration captures no more information than coming in as a guest. I don’t even think registration is enforcing a valid email. However, everybody logging into the site gives up the expected net information.

I’ve been away from the QTree a lot lately – busy with stuff for daughter who has disability – finding a used wheelchair, arranging for inspection, shipping, payment, etc.
When the insurance denied a new wheelchair for our daughter to replace her 2012 – 8 year old chair (It’s old in wheelchair years – like 15 years in dog years. They usually replace a daily use wheelchair after 6 years.) I searched Craigslist all over the country – found a nearly new chair only 6 miles on the odometer – driven by a little old lady (no kidding).
Rule #1 – Always get a Permobil wheelchair and get an authorized Permobil dealer inspection before buying a used wheelchair.
Rule #2 – Find out the mileage, date of mfg., serial number and get Permobil tech support to look up the chair to see if it’s a lemon, had problems, repairs.
Rule #3 – Never buy a used wheelchair driven by a teenage male – when they are angry about their disability, they take it out on the chair.
It’s a lot like buying a used car.
This is the second time I have bought her nearly new wheelchairs on Craigslist – last time I drove up to Kentucky to pick up one and had the other one shipped from Colorado.
Have to say, our daughter, who has increasing coordination difficulties, is pretty hard on her wheelchairs too – and anything in her path – like furniture, appliances, cabinets, etc. Power wheelchairs are like tanks.
So – I’ve also been shopping for a file cabinet to replace the wood/composite one she busted recently.
I noticed that you haven’t been around lately.

We just put out our first plants last night. Now a turn toward cold and we are worried about a frost Wed, yikes! But they were getting so big and it has been so warm. Blackberries have flowered …. thought it was safe. After growing them from seed weeks ago hope they make it.
Love growing our own food. Right now, its for “fun” (lots of work to be labled “fun”!) and a supplement to what we buy but we are slowly moving toward permaculture planned property.

Trying to get winter squash out ASAP so that it will mature before the squash bugs overwhelm us in August. Haven’t found a successful method for squash bugs as we only do organic so now we just try to get most of them, trying to keep the numbers low, keeping them at bay, until squash mature. Earlier we start them in the house, earlier we get them in the ground, better chance we have.

A short list of companion plants that will deter squash bugs if inter-planted with the squash:
Catnip, chervil, dill, lemon balm, nasturtiums (edible flowers), and tansy. Don’t plant tansy where animals can get into it, as it is toxic to many. My personal favorite is the dill.
Companion planting is my preferred method of pest control, as I use no poisons, ever.
Don’t forget marigolds, they keep lots of insects away.

You can be on a relatively winding road with a certain speed limit, then approach a curve where the speed limit is reducted for a short stretch. I don’t know how that works with self-driving cars (and I don’t want to personally find out).

Satellite images released this week revealed the progress that China has made toward completing its latest and most technologically advanced aircraft carrier, the Type-003.
The images, taken from over Shanghai, reveal a new aircraft carrier that is only about 55 feet shorter than the U.S. Navy’s Ford-class carriers, according to Naval News.
Wonder what technology they stole from us (or the Klintoons/Øbøzø/Bye, Done et. al gave/sold to them) to produce the carrier(s)…..

I suddenly get the 2 masks I’ve seen at the hospital.
I have SLE, with associated kidney and pulmonary complications. After routine nephrology visits resumed (8 monthes late), I noticed the staff double-masked. When I asked about it, they said something about changing outer masks between patients.
But that’s not it, or not all of it.
This year I’ve been extra-careful to avoid the ER for out-of-control asthma. Besides the immunosupressent meds, I wear a mask outdoors or in dusty places.
N95 respirators are most comfortable. They have a tiny valve, so you’re not breathing your own exhaust.
But that valve is venting your filthy, dirty, CHY-na germy breath to the entire world!
To spare the world your filthy, dirty, CHY-na cooties, you cover that N95 respirator with a regular surgical mask.
When you see someone wearing a white, close-fitting mask and another in any color, that’s what it is.
I am sorry, Yucki – but, that is just insane.
Masks do not protect you from anything – unless you are working in a dusty environment – people with asthma or COPD cannot wear masks – and wearing a mask outdoors does not make any sense to me – even if one has allergies.
Masks are not healthy – Vitamin D and breathing are highly recommended.
Masks are necessary for surgical procedures in a hospital – they are worn for the benefit and protection of the patient – not the mask-wearer.
It’s actually a respirator, not a regular mask. I used a shorthand description because it looks like a mask.
And yes, they’re absolutely essential at certain times of the year and in some cities with high contaminates year round.
My experience may be exclusive to lupus patients. However, pulmonary and renal complications are dealt with in those specialist clinics, referrals from rheumatology.

The existing scientific evidences challenge the safety and efficacy of wearing facemask as preventive intervention for COVID-19. The data suggest that both medical and non-medical facemasks are ineffective to block human-to-human transmission of viral and infectious disease such SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19, supporting against the usage of facemasks. Wearing facemasks has been demonstrated to have substantial adverse physiological and psychological effects. These include hypoxia, hypercapnia, shortness of breath, increased acidity and toxicity, activation of fear and stress response, rise in stress hormones, immunosuppression, fatigue, headaches, decline in cognitive performance, predisposition for viral and infectious illnesses, chronic stress, anxiety and depression. Long-term consequences of wearing facemask can cause health deterioration, developing and progression of chronic diseases and premature death. I have thought it would be a good idea for a multi-day focus on a particular topic or event. An example from my own interest follows. I have for a couple of years listened to the X22 report; until recently every day. One of the comments the host has repeated scores of times is some variation of this: optics are important. He usually says this as an explanation for why the white hats never seem to take actions with respect to one form of corruption or another. I have often wondered about that explanation. Are optics as important as the host has implied they are? My observation of the opposition is that optics are irrelevant. Burning down neighborhoods, killing those who disagree is not an apparent concern of these people. Sad to say but I agree with your comment earlier that conservatives are suckers. It seems that the optics of masks and chains do not seem to cause the same outrage as arresting and prosecuting treasonous behavior. Of course we have no idea if arrests and prosecution of traitors and other government criminals would cause outrage because to this point it has never been tried. In any event I think that would be one of those topics that a forum would enhance.

Good. Some are over at Maricas. I guess its permanent. Some are in the wind. Some are busy like you. And others have time but dont want to talk to themselves online too. Lol.
There has been a bit of bifurcation — and some of our friends here are now 90% at Marica’s, but we love to see them here when they visit. I go over there every so often, and they are always welcoming. Some of the old regular commenters here are now posters over there.
Daughn got nailed by the Corona turndown and has had a lot of difficulty in maintaining a pace. Her infrequent posts are excellent, however, and you can tell by her comments that she has a lot of fans from here.
