I’m not sure where I’m going with this today, but there’s so much ugliness in the world, it needs to be countered with beauty. Seriously, one of the purposes of art is to inspire, not just to bring pleasure to owners.
I found this meme a while back and don’t remember if I used it….
The problem, as described in the meme above, is that beauty is EXPENSIVE right now. At least it’s made to be expensive by market forces and the people at the top of the arts food chain. They don’t seem to want too many of the people in the pit, to borrow a concept from Shakespeare’s day, sharing in the “luxuries” they savor.
That has carried over to food in our times, although, wild Alaskan Sockeye for $22.99 a pound isn’t bad. (Still didn’t buy any on Monday. It was pasta night.) Manufactured food has ruined many a palate.
We pay more for privilege and beauty and higher quality food. We pay more for vintage housing and the like. We pay more for renovation, or making new of what had aged, and frequently has more character than the grain silo look that…graces(?)…McMansions and other housing offerings.
Why? Well…American art, including architecture, has suffered from…well….
The meme indicates that, of course, it is the parents clipping wings of children, but the truth of the matter is the way the American system is set up currently, the school system turns just about everybody into grade grubbers, not critical thinkers, and in no way developing talents unseen unless parents have an interest in paying for and driving back and forth from private lessons.
As a culture thanks to mass marketing, we are dictating creativity, and that is stifling creativity.
Well, unless we are talking about new and creative ways of carrying out corruption.
Anyway, just something to ponder.
And then, of course, there’s this.

If I recall correctly (and, y’know, I have a mind like a steel trap — prone to rust and illegal in 27 states….), not only was it a really old iPad, but Apple had dropped her like a hot rock and wouldn’t even upgrade it within its technical limits.
My current suggestion is to upgrade hardware to something you can keep going. I suspect that you can make a Chromebook into a stripped down Linux machine for $100, but I have yet to do this (which will be post-move project) and certainly would not recommend someone purchasing a device for something that may or may not work.
What I know will work is a Pi 400 kit ($100) where you convert it to Ubuntu Mate (I have done this). The problem is that it comes complete except for THREE pieces. The first is a generic USB mouse. I can get ’em at surplus shops around here for $4/each when I can’t find one in the morass. The second is a 1080p or better video display with an HDMI input — VGA/HDMI adapters do not work. Cheap Walmart TV’s can qualify. The third is a micro SD card of exactly 32G that runs as fast as possible (I’ve got a couple waiting to be used that do 100 MB/s). She’ll also need someone on-site that can do semi-technical stuff for about an hour (who needs internet and a way to burn SD cards).
Of course, that isn’t very portable (display…..), so there’s that. But it’s quite capable, quite maintainable, and won’t ever have the level of abandonment she got from Apple.
Yeah, I think her device can’t be updated.
Of course, if she has a spare TV with HDMI input (or finds one at a garage sale), that part can be “free” as well.
The thing with the Chromebooks is that they are going out of support in a matter of months. After that, they will continue to run until overrun with cruft and malware, possibly taking personal data with it.
Tell her to try to get in again, and definitely to leave a comment on the Q Tree, either way.
You might also note that I’ve always commented here as “guest” (no animal), so registration isn’t all that necessary. Ozzy just came back as “guest”. She may be able to get further as “guest” than by dorking with any installed anything or registering or logging-in.

After I last posted, I had a crisis: fever of 102; chills that made me shake; 135 pulse; so weak I couldn’t stand up. Called 911 who were so freaked out at my blood results that they used the siren!
ER put me in an isolation room (I am on their CCP [cranky covid patriot] list) My fever started to break with profuse sweating. ALL my labs from blood draws were in the normal range and no urine infection. They were stumped but while they were pondering, my fever went back to normal. Imagine that – the compromised immune system of a 73 year old beat whatever invaded me.
I suspect a bunch of prayers were made at the same time, and they work. ThanQ all.”

Yes, God’s natural design works wonders. I won’t typically medicate a fever until it’s pushing 103 & becomes exceedingly uncomfortable. God put that mechanism into us for a reason. Not recommending anything for anyone else though, especially someone w/ serious/chronic illnesses. I’ve been up to 104.5 a few times as an adult & that is definitely no picnic…
I went as high as 106 as a kid and just shrugged it off, then did a 103 when I was about 40 (15 years or so years ago….) and it was a ginormous freakin’ deal. And then pgroup is saying that a 102 slammed him but good…..
Why is it that less and less of a fever hits you harder and harder as you age?
I mean, there are a lot of things that change as you age, and you can sort of figure why. But why is a fever so much more tolerable with youth?

Yes, but generally there are known (and somewhat obvious) reasons.
For example, a four-year-old may experience stresses on their limbs that would result in serious breakage at 14….because those elements are mostly cartilage at 4 and won’t fully turn to bone for a while. That’s known — and it’s a good thing to be mostly bone as an adult, because you need to be able to exert muscle forces backed by bone. Your cranium needs to be able to enlarge between birth and adulthood, so you want it flexible….but adults can use the extra protection.
But where does this fever thing come from and how does it work?
Don’t really know, but maybe given that kids might be more prone to excessive dirt/disease/germ exposure when crawling & putting everything into their mouths, including boogers, they need a super-killing death-ray level fever to protect them 🙂
They have a higher surface / mass ratio so can cool off rapidly.
bacteria live in our ideal temps. To take hold they must be adapted to our usual so the body tries,often very successfully to kill them by fever. Because it takes a while to make antibodies to novel bugs. For kids most bugs are novel. So whilst their immune systems are building up their memory bank the body does a quick sortie via high temperature to wipe them out. The killer T cell can then study the enemy, punch out the correct antibodies and store the info for future reference
I don’t know if they did that down under, but I remember watching The Andromeda Strain movie when it first came out, and the pH limits. It made a big impression on me, though I was quite young, so I understood why fevers could be good.
But it still niggles at my “why?” impulse about the age/temp thing.
You postulate a link to size….I wonder if anyone has ever done a study of fevers in midgets. I mean, in the US, it has to compete against shrimp on treadmills, but…….

He would stand there & listen to pretentious teachers expounding on the importance & meaning of this profound work of modern art, laughing inside at their inflated sense of importance & the epic gag he’d pulled w/ no one wising up to it! Oh yes. My grandpa was a bit of a feisty legend back in the day. He was a small compact but very strong man who’d put himself through college by working on the railroads in the UP (he was 1st generation Finn) throwing railroad ties. In the era of running in the halls & chewing gum being the big baddies in HS he would shoulder tackle guys who wouldn’t stop running in school when told to do so by staff. Later he’d run a string/rope/wire? across the hall & lift it to trip unrepentant runners. Things that would get someone locked up now were done to keep “order” in days when respect for authority was still a thing.
My dad said if they ever got in trouble at school or in the neighborhood they would get it twice as bad at home. Any neighbor could spank other people’s kids & they’d really get it from their own parents if they were so poorly behaved as to merit punishment outside of the home. It’s doubtful that kids that grew up in that type of climate became criminals…
This man adopted my mother, so none of his blood is in my veins but his spirit lives on in our family stories & some of our personalities. Apparently he really hated JFK & despised that he was known for the “ask not what your country can do for you” quote that was actually (reportedly) plagiarized from Oliver Wendell Holmes. I never heard him talk politics but he sure loved sports, practical jokes, & hard work!
Back in the day if you got in trouble for being a jerk the cops would just give you a kick in the ass. Your parents would finish you off.

When I took kiddo on our break, we looked at dr seuss, Picasso, toulouse la trec, renoir, and original animation art. An extended conversation with the dealer later and he told me how nithing, even prints not originals, takes long to sell. They are being biught as quickly as they come in. Those with money are buying everything.
A copy of original work by seuss, not a giclee, is well over 1100, dt specufic printer, paper, copy quantity, etc.

The thing about Picasso…
He was a very bright man. He knew what he was painting was crap, but the Paris Salon Set was willing to pay big $$$ for his stuff, so that’s what he produced.
That’s sort of the mentality that’s crept into the arts world where once a virtuoso would tour with his or her own compositions and play things that were never heard again.
Every music director used to compose what was played/sung that wasn’t proscribed. And then amateurs decided to direct things.
It’s a mess.
Picasso and dali. Dali’s stuff got really wierd , just too nonsensical.
One of the fun things I learned from the d’Orsay show in SF was that Seurat could paint. He did little studies for parts of his famous large pointillist works on little canvases with a few swipes of a brush — and he had real talent. Who knew?
The thing with Picasso is that he had a certain amount of talent that was really good…..but he got trapped in his schtick.

I have not been to the Schultz Museum — I have heard it’s nice, but the one time I was in the right place to try, it was closed for renovation. I have been to the Jelly Belly Factory. I found it interesting, but then I’m interested in industrial practices. We gave the godkids back to their parents there one time, and the kids bounced all the way home to Sacramento and promptly crashed.
How are you coming up?
Driving if we do. More than 7 hr drive bc we would need to stop. Have to look and see if we wanted to go quite than far up, or just go to Monterey aquarium for a couple days.
If you’re coming up 5, the California State Railroad Museum in Sacto is nice. Coming up 1 is gorgeous scenery all the way, and you could do Hearst Castle, but it is a LOT longer….and, IIRC, currently washed out near Big Sur. 99 is “safer” than 5, in that you can find a place to stop in the next 25 miles over most of its length….and it’s not that much longer than 5. 101 is nice for most of its length….I’ve driven it so many times I could tell you stories about every mile. A nice place to stretch your legs and do a quick rest stop is the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. It was built right before the 1929 stock market crash and a wild extravaganza of civic indulgence that could not be equaled for decades.
The MBA, nice though it is, is probably just a day.

This is quite common. The Japanese company Kubota (they make tractors and such), has two sets of managers (one American and one Japanese).
They have plants over here. It is difficult for American employees…lots of rules that delineate how the Japanese view Americans.
The funny part isn’t that they did anything wrong — it could have just as easily said, “locals” and “recent travelers” or “in Japan entire month” and “recently arrived watch list”, and gotten a pass. Their society is so thoroughly Japanese-focused that they stepped into a BLM trope completely blind.
And, of course, there are so many woke young athletes and retinues attending, they’d see it like segregated water fountains.
I’m not as understanding.
In the semiconductor/tech biz, you deal a lot with the Japanese, and you get actually somewhat fond of them because of the way they are always trying.
As an example, I had a boss who was of Italian extraction who had his early life around Binghamton, New York. On the day he left Binghamton for California, he swore that he had seen the last of Pastafazool….he HATED Italian food. Now, mind you, I know there’s northern Italy (butter), southern Italy (olive oil), Parma (meats), Tuscan (simple, but delightful), Sicilian (spicy)…..but he was launching out on his own and had done ENOUGH of it.
Now, one thing he really enjoyed was Japanese food. Everything from simple hand food like sushi, to ornate teppanyaki, to cozy shabu-shabu….on those days he had lunch, he probably did Japanese one day every week.
So this Japanese business delegation comes to Silicon Valley to look at business opportunities, including with us. On one night of their trip, they had dinner in his honor.
Based on his last name, it was at one of the nicer Italian places in town — which was, in fact, very nice if they’d invited me…..but based on my ancestry, they’d probably have had the dinner at Sinnfield McCool’s Coddle and Cabbage.
They were very sincerely trying. They were trying to show respect. They were trying to be nice. They were trying to curry favor….but……
It’s sort of like the good-guy aliens in Galaxy Quest. You don’t want to be the one that breaks the news to them.

There is a bombshell there. The auditing team got done, and whatever it saw, it decided it needed to do a second machine count of the total, after its extensive hand count. I suspect it gave its numbers to the Senate, and they are so unbelievable that even though the auditing team did two counts, the Senate decided it needed to independently confirm them itself a third time, because the public will be hesitant to believe it could be this bad. Christina Bobb at OAN had said her sources told her that some of the boxes of ballots claimed to represent a number of votes, but there were only 80% as many ballots as there should have been, implying they may have taken 25% of the ballots that were cast, all of which went for Biden, and just rescanned them again to add them to the total, and put everything back in the box, saying it had 1000 votes instead of 800. And that ignores fake ballots that don’t track back to anyone or track back to people who didn’t cast them, the machines set to say Trump ballots were unreadable, which sent them to adjudication, perhaps Trump ballots that never got scanned, and computer hacking that happened after all of that. I think the report is going to be mind blowing.

Wouldn’t you know, the system was purportedly glitching so that some items would not ring up on the checker’s machine but would magically ring up at the self-check. 🙄
We were told it was a limited item thing, mostly pharmacy items. Sure enough, someone’s OTC wouldn’t ring up.
But next up, someone’s beer wouldn’t ring up.
When it came my turn, two meat items wouldn’t ring up.
I told the checker I didn’t want them, then turned around and told the lady behind me this seemed like a thinly veiled push to get us to use the self-check.
She replied that they couldn’t get anyone to work and were desperate to hire new employees.

My take is Wally World is saving money not having to deal with the labor involved in the machines managing cash, cash deposits… Not to metion getting customers to scan their purchases, bag, pay, and then haul their stuff to the car.
HARD push on digital. Minimize Wally World over head.
Try a beauty supply shop that normally sells to salons. They often have larger sizes of hydrogen peroxide in stronger concentrations than 3%. You can dilute it with distilled water down to the desired strength and refill old bottles.
Dilution is not rocket surgery. If you have 100ml of 10% peroxide, then you have 90 ml of water and 10 ml of peroxide. If you want 3% peroxide, you will need to figure out what 10 is 3% of…..which would be 333. So, if you have 333 ml of total solution with 10 ml of peroxide, you have 323 ml of water. You had 90 ml a bit ago, so you should add 233 ml of additional water. That’s going forward.
With anything where you particularly care about the results, you should run the same thing backwards to ensure that you’re good.
For anything applied to your body or taken internally, it’s a good idea to compute it again sideways to be absolutely certain it makes complete sense.

We tried to eat at an IHOP after my husband’s Sunday evening concert. We were there 2 hours before posted closing & walked in through open doors w/ no staff or customers around. LOL Reminds me of a story my son told at his friend’s wedding, where he was best man. They used to work at a local chain restaurant where Brandon was a waiter & J (the groom) was an assistant manager who took no guff. Apparently they were slammed with customers & one was very cantankerous about how long it was taking to get food. J came out to talk w/ him & explained their short staff situation, including a lack of cooks. My son tells the story much better, of courser, but the upshot was that the customer called J a liar so J asked if He was willing to be a cook to get things moving & when said customer refused he pointed out that then he still had no cooks!
One of my favorites is about a guy who showed up at a furniture store with a help-wanted ad. The ad said that applications would be taken at noon, but when the guy showed up at 9:30, the line already had formed along the side of the showroom, out the door, down the street, and around the corner. He sat down and watched.
He observed that salesmen picked up an order book at the desk, went out, found a customer, sold the merchandise, wrote up the order in the book with his initials, tore off his copy, then dropped the book at the desk. The desk sent the original to accounting to make ready, and the 3rd copy to shipping to make the order ready for delivery.
At 10:00, he went up to the desk and picked up a book.
He noticed when the line started moving at noon. It moved pretty briskly, but was still substantial at one o’clock. He kept finding customers, helping them select furniture, writing up their orders, tearing off his copy, and changing his book for a new one.
At two o’clock, substantial progress had been made, but there was still a queue. At about two thirty, he went to meekly stand in line as one of the last applicants.
He was finally ushered in to the interview room at nearly three o’clock. The haggard manager looked significantly worse for wear, but still stuck to his script: “do you have any relevant experience to bring to this position?”, he asked.
The applicant laid down his stack of sales receipts.
The manager looked at them, then shuffled through them, then got up and left the room. The sales lead came in from the floor, looked through them, and also left. A neat, precise looking individual came in with some ledgers and looked through the stack, marking them with a red pen.
Finally, a clerk came in with a number of folders and forms.
The applicant asked, “are you here to interview me?” and the clerk replied, “no, I’m here from payroll — I’m told you started this morning and I’m to get your files in order.”
That’s awesome.

In another tale my dad knew of someone who came to interview w/ a high-powered executive for a top level position. The guy came in to the meeting with his tie thrown over his shoulder. The interviewer looked at it as some type of power move to see who would blink first so he determined Not to ask about the tie. The cool & calm of the interviewee impressed him so he was offered the job. Later the interviewer asked the applicant why he’d chosen that strategy. Well the guy had had lunch before the interview & thrown his tie over his shoulder so as to not spill any food on it & forgotten to re-situate himself. An epic fluke that resulted in a great job!
My parents knew a disabled guy w/ like CP who was interviewing for a position over a restaurant lunch. At one point his spasticity got out of control & his flailing hand knocked his pie across the table in front of his potential future boss. Without missing a beat the boss took a bite from the pie & knocked the plate back across the table thanking the guy for sharing his dessert–he too got the job 🙂

In the family history arena Ford, Firestone, & I forget who (Edison?) & wives were travelling in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in some luxury car when they got stuck in a ditch. They pleaded with a local farmer (my relative) to help get them out of a ditch, which he did while chastising them for not driving a Ford (served them right or something). He apparently didn’t know who they were. Supposedly 2 new Model-T’s (or something) were delivered on the next train! I’ve always wanted to verify this tale if possible.

I think it was Lee Iacocca who used to work for Ford who wanted to pursue minivans but the Ford descendant in charge at the time wanted to go in another direction, perhaps trucks. So wherever LI went the minivan turned into a really big deal & Ford missed the opportunity to be more on the cutting edge of that trend. We used to have the extended Aerostar minivan w/ our 4 kids but it got discontinued, such an incredible bummer for ours was a great family vehicle…

Here’s my anecdote about the labor shortage. My favorite bakery has been closed for over a month and counting. When it first shut down, they didn’t give a reason. Went to a gathering over the weekend to remember the life of a special person with friends and family. Had a wonderful time. I’d love to give a ground report if I can:
Traveled to my hometown. Blue state. Traveled the state toll road that since covid, no longer has tollbooths. All of the toll attendants handing out tickets and collecting tolls gone; but the state knows exactly who, what, where, when,and how, and will have all of my bank information if I choose to pay the toll online when the bill arrives by mail. No wonder why the state needs to convert power plants to data centers.
Room full of intelligent, successful, interesting, fun people of good will. Many have spent lives and careers in academia, government, DC, defense. These people are close to my heart. Political talk wasn’t the focus of the day, and when it surfaced, it surfaced carefully, and respectfully. My guess, 3-5 people
out of 100 in the room, support conservative ideas.
When the lament of ongoing censorship of academic freedom, (within the context of CRT and the English department), was raised by others I agreed that government shouldn’t dictate what can be researched and discussed, that respectful, civil discourse should allow robust debate of differing opinions, and that conservative ideas were also under attack and actively being censored, threatening freedom of speech.
Trump bashing began immediately.
I sucked the energy out of this by reminding this person that Biden was now in office, not Trump. To which the response was, ” but his supporters and his candidate endorsements” are dangerous. I reminded this person that that is how our political system works and shouldn’t be considered threatening.
I mentioned Glen Greenwald, clearly not someone I would think of as a Trump supporter, currently supporting ideas that are also embraced by the right, and that conservative researchers are being banned and deleted thru out social media. That intellectuals, not conspiracy theorists, of the right are having their research disappeared online. To my shock, the response was that some speech should be censored.
This is when I dropped the gain of function pill in the blue punch bowl. The elevator speech of all that we now know about the origin of Covid, censorship of the lab leak theory for 18 months, explanation of how this allows the negligent (at best) to reposition assets, censorship of doctors with alternative effective treatment protocols, the death of nearly 4 million people worldwide, and academia’s complicity in the transfer of US government IP to the communist Chinese. Stunned silence.

So, in my latest “live, without a net” adventure….tomorrow, I have an appointment to get a prescription for CPAP equipment.
Obamacare *spit* made it so prescriptions only last one year, even for lifelong conditions, so you have to meet with a “specialist” *cha-ching* annually to get re-prescribed the same damned thing.
This also applies for veterinary prescriptions, btw. Fluffy’s going to cost you an annual vet bill to get the same damned heartworm drop between the shoulders every year of his life.
In addition, to get the CPAP diagnosis in the first place, you have to do a “sleep study”. Since Obamacare *spit* also means that you change medical plans every year, the only way to bring forward your initial diagnosis is in a file from your original practitioner. My original practitioner, when he was being forced out of his private practice by Obamacare *spit*, was kind enough to furnish me a paper copy of my file.
I have located my file and have it ready.
I’m already “going rogue” with the Coronavirus BS — they can stuff their injections up their behind and break them, I have ivermectin close at hand. If I don’t get a “your papers are in order, please proceed….”, I may go rogue on CPAP. I tore my machine down to components for cleaning (the sneaky bastards have an external filter you’re supposed to change — but internal filter elements that you have to remove parts to get to). I feel confident in my ability to bootleg a BiPAP machine. I’d only have to find a way to smuggle masks…..
The other hilarious one is that my BiPAP machine is equipped with an SD card to record usage, so I can take it in and have it read and have my usage added to my chart…..and prove to the insurance company that I really use it and haven’t sold it on the black market.
I run Linux. I can read it. I can write it. I’ve decoded about half of it just looking at it in plaintext…..I could do some analysis and figure out the rest. I’m tempted to have it show I’m in deep sleep for 32 hours straight, then eight hours a day for three days, then two hours of deep sleep every 24 hours for three days. They’d probably wonder if my last name was Biden. There is zero encryption on it.

I was thinking more along the lines of what if ALL patriots suddenly stopped protecting their identity?
