I kept looking for something “off”, and I believe that it’s the “crescent moon shape from above”, which seems to be a common motif at the whole site.

Regarding the word of the day, I think antagonistic is a better primary entry….when you say something is inimical to progress towards Westville, it’s not just that it needs a little push south or north. It’s not that it’d rather not. It’s that each knowing step toward, or enabling a step toward, Westville is as welcome as 40 lashes.
I think antagonistic is probably more general, because it extends the usage better to things like natural processes, where “antagonism” is now quite comfortable, but I like HOSTILE, personally, because it “renews the poetic assertion of emotion”. And indeed, I really love it when refs and editors let “hostile” slip by in scientific papers! 😉
I was thinking more of the chemical sort of antagonism — it’s not just “meh” to the original, it’s commandeering all the resources to ensure the original can’t be followed.

Housekeeping Note 1 —
Any of you crazy enough to be closely following the goings-on at Casa de Cthulhu may remember that the Fiancee was kind enough to interrupt my dining by opening the door to the garage and loudly proclaiming that it smelled like something had died out there in the middle of a heat wave.
As such things do, the smell got baked into nothing after about 48 hours, and I thought that I’d eventually have to find and evict the corpse.
About three days ago, we got this plague of small house flies in the garage that were incredibly stupid. Yesterday, there were some medium-sized — but still quite stupid. And today there are even a couple of large — but not winning any IQ contests. They’re probably feeding on (a) that part of the original corpse that did not get stripped by maggots; (b) each other; or (c) the stain of a broken bottle of Ponzu sauce. For liquids, they probably have (a) each other, or (b) the defrost runoff from the garage fridge. Evolution is not selecting for the best and the brightest.
We kept getting flies in the house for a few weeks. I mean wake up in the am and you’d kill 10 in the kitchen, them the next day same again. Figured out they were coming in the rain drain holes of the windows to escape the heat. I put foil in them and no problems since.
These flies are too stupid to figure a way into the house or out into the garden. They’re congregating on the light fixture over the garage fridge (AKA “beer fridge”). Last time I went out there, I waved an empty shampoo bottle around a bit to get them stirred up, then scored a neat backhand on one.

You could put a sticky fly strip out there then just toss it out. Thats easy enough.
There’s a whole ecosystem out there that could use their attendance. I might have to open the big garage door for several hours for no apparent reason.
If we had garage geckos, I may never have noticed the flies. As seen in Fiji and Honduras (and suspected in Hawaii and Puerto Rico), geckos are very efficient about keeping random creepy-crawlies at bay.

Geckos can be drop-dead gorgeous. Note, however, that they are also considerably more fragile than Steve’s Darwin.

There is a cavity in most sinks that connect the drain to the air vent in the bowl.
This cavity is where the flies (and gnats) usually lay there eggs and hatch.
So in a way you are correct about the drains…..
I spray bug killer in those sink vent holes occasionally…… it helps a lot.
Yeah, I try to flush some water down the sink overflow every so often myself….but there are no sinks in the garage with the flies.

Ugh. I loaded up a famous movie (for research purposes…honestly), and was immediately hit with flashing lights in the intro. Now my head feels funny. I strongly suspect they add flashing lights in these films to induce a hypnotic effect so that the audience absorbs the programming better.
There’s also a theory out there that the light from the TV itself induces hypnosis. I’ve got no comment on that one, although it would explain a lot if true.

It the TV or monitor uses PWM (pulse-width modulation) to adjust the brightness, it’s “a feature not a bug”, as that type of clipping is a very high frequency flickering that disturbs many people, and even can cause seizures in some people. There’s website that talks about this at length (don’t have the link, sorry). We checked that out when my son was looking at laptops, because his old laptop gave him headaches.
The other thing that causes problems is the backlights (either LEDs or fluorescent tubes) in TVs and monitors also flicker, and sometimes at different frequencies than room lights, e.g. 50-Hz current here, 100 flickers/second from the fluorescents and LEDs (barf), but 60-Hz driver frequency on the monitor and 120 flickers/second from the backlights. The “beat” between the two frequencies is irritating, in addition to the PWM effects.
Seems incandescent lights, because the filament stays hot between halves of the voltage wave, don’t flicker. Neither do the old CRTs, where the phosphors stay lit while the electron beam moves on (and, of course, produces ghosting, especially desired while watching the Addams Family or Topper or Harvey the Rabbit…OK, just kidding)…
Many years ago there was the “subliminal suggestion” scandal where very brief images were interspersed among the video frames on TV shows. Too fast to really recognize, but long enough for the message to register. Supposedly illegal, maybe it’s still around…

The movie theaters can’t show film that flashes faster than a certain rate, but the home version of the same movie often does. I’ve learned to stay vigilant and cover my eyes when any flashes start. It causes non focal seizure like brain states for me. Not everyone has a brain injury, but it certainly seems over stimulating. Even some of the flash rates of roadside signs are bad these days.

I know most people, including Christians, are comfortable because of what Trump has done with the economy, but the nation is still mostly sinful, abortion, homosexuality, transgenderism…and most Christians still love too many things of the world, their football, sports, Netflix, Games of Thrones, etc, etc, etc…it’s coming…and it is not going to be what most people or even Christians are expecting. I feel like Isaiah who said, Lord, who will believe our report? I can tell you that most Christians do not believe even the little bit I have shared with them.
There’s gonna be those 5 virgins who are going to get caught without oil in their lamps. I’m ready and have tried to get some others ready…and not talking about being a prepper…talking about the state of hearts before God.

I once worked at one of the last production fabs in Silicon Valley, and later worked for a place making wafer handling equipment. The story isn’t “TSMC or UMC or die” or “China could take over Taiwan and own TSMC and UMC.”
Sure, a wafer fab is a couple of billion dollars of equipment stuffed in a building….but it is also the creation and maintenance of “design rules” for a fab which dramatically increase the chance of your chip working properly. Then, there is your “netlist” which describe the desired operation of the chip. Then there’s the quasi-AI “tools” that actually provide masks to expose one layer on the chip (they don’t look like straight lines and corners anymore because they are designed to provide sharper-looking images from the interference patterns of the masks at the ultra-short wavelengths involved).
If all the people working in a fab flee when you take it over, and computers are scrubbed, your learning curve — even with the finest equipment in place and operable — is decades.
On the other hand, there are a bunch of places that mothballed their fabs when the Taiwanese jumped past ’em (the AMD 5950X microprocessor is done on TSMC 6 nm. We used to work with an Israeli fab that could do 65 nm [smaller is better].). If you gave the Israelis duplicate equipment and key employees from TSMC, they’d be making 6 nm chips a durn sight faster than anyone invading Taiwan is going to do so.

I do not know which hospital system or group or practice she went to to get this. We basically have two systems here: the group affiliated with Saint Louis University (Jesuit/Catholic) and everyone else who are pretty much lined up with Washington University.

Yes, the provincial ballot gets counted once the eligibility of the voter is verified, but in the mean time they have no way to track down and pull the fraudulent ballot unless an audit is performed, which means it counts for determining the winner.
People give up their lives in defending your right to vote in free and honest elections. IMO this makes voting a sacred right and penalties for voter fraud should reflect that.
