Joe Biteme, properly styled His Fraudulency, continues to infest the White House, we haven’t heard much from the person who should have been declared the victor, and hopium is still being dispensed even as our military appears to have joined the political establishment in knuckling under to the fraud.

(I’d like to add, I find it entirely plausible, even likely, that His Fraudulency is also His Figureheadedness. (Apparently that wasn’t a word; it got a red underline. Well it is now.) Where I differ with the hopium addicts is on the subject of who is really in charge. It ain’t anyone we like.)

The prior election must be acknowledged as fraudulent, and steps must be taken to prosecute the fraudsters and restore integrity to the system.
Nothing else matters at this point. Talking about trying again in 2022 or 2024 is hopeless otherwise. Which is not to say one must never talk about this, but rather that one must account for this in ones planning; if fixing the fraud is not part of the plan, you have no plan.

And now for something completely different
I finally got a wild hair up my whatever and decided to investigate something I’ve known about for quite some time, Qubes OS.
The idea behind Qubes OS is that everything you do can run in a separate virtual machine. So if you want to go to a dodgy web site, perhaps one that sometimes puts malware on your system, you can open that website in a one-time virtual machine. It can go ahead and infect the daylights out of your system…and it won’t matter because it goes up in a cloud of smoke when you close the window. It’s sort of like sending all the woke people with the CRT mind virus off to their own island and letting them starve to death because they don’t know Jacques Schitt (brother of Adam) about doing anything you need to do to survive.
Qubes OS is in fact based on the premise that you WILL get attacked successfully; the idea is to only allow the hackers to get their mitts on one disposable “sandbox” that you can throw away.
Qubes OS is Linux based–fair warning. And I had a really hard time getting it to install, finally having to resort to installing it on a USB drive (not a thumb drive, but one of those little boxes you have to run a cable from, to a USB port). [This is not recommended, in fact they recommend using PS2 keyboards and mice instead of USB ones (including wireless). I didn’t even know anyone still sold those! But it was good enough for me to give it a test drive.] After struggling with that for three days, I’ve managed to do a lot in the last few hours.
You have direct control over which of the virtual machines can even see your internet connection, and/or your ethernet. In fact, the default setup includes something called the “vault.” It cannot communicate with ANYTHING without your direct intervention, so that’s a good place to keep, for example, your passwords.
In fact, I’m writing this post in a Qubes OS window running firefox. I’ll be working out Brave at some point. As well as a lot of other things.
Another fair warning–you will want 32 GB of RAM to start and a very powerful processor for this, and the fastest storage you can get (one of those M2 cards that plug directly into the motherboard would be about right). Running virtual machines consumes a lot of RAM and processing time. Opening a new window can take an annoyingly long amount of time when you’re used to something responsive.
In other words you might want a “Gaming” machine, but without the water-cooled graphics card that makes the lights dim when it shows monsters blowing up or whatever.
It’s supposedly possible to install Windows in one of the virtual machine “templates” and thereby be able to open up Micro$haft Turd or Micro$haft Exceed if you need to (though LibreOffice is usually a workable alternative to those); I have a number of eclectic apps that do not have Linux versions out there, so if I ever want to ditch my other old system, that’s something I will have to do.
It does come with Whonix, which by default uses Tor to communicate with the outside world.
Anyhow, this machine I am on isn’t bad…but it might be time to spring for a real powerhouse.
Now having said all that, probably the only person remotely interested here is Cthulhu, and he just uses a ton of Raspberry Pi machines anyway.
James Webb Space Telescope Update
Another of a series of articles on what they hope…OK maybe finally we can say “expect”…JWST to do. This one concerns the search for primimeval black holes.
Although we’re pretty confident there’s a mondo (4 million sun mass) black hole at the center of the galaxy (and one a thousand times more massive than that at the center of the M87 galaxy in the Virgo cluster), we do not know why galaxies seem to invariably have these black holes in them. Hopefully JWST will shed some light on that.

One question is whether these black holes existed before the galaxies did; that would likely mean galaxies need the black holes to form in the first place, sort of like raindrops condensing around dust particles. Well, we don’t have a time machine, but we CAN look backwards in time if we can just get a strong enough telescope that can see redshifted stuff from 13 billion light years away…which is what JWST is supposed to do for us.
Seeing 13 billion light years away is seeing 13 billion years into the past…because it takes the light that long to get to us; we only now would see what happened there 13 billion years ago. (Astronomers call this “look back time.” Yeah, no fancy Latin or Greek name; very few people learn that stuff in school any more.) On the other hand if we don’t see “bare” black holes back before there were galaxies, then they likely formed in the galaxies, after the galaxies formed; in other words rather than the black holes causing the galaxies, the galaxies caused the black holes.
Meanwhile the graphic showing the instrument commissioning still shows 19 instrument modes in progress.

Yup, I’ve been watching Qubes closely since version 3.
It relies on having a bulletproof hypervisor, Xen, which is a separate project.
The reason it talks about PS2 peripherals is because USB ports are fundamentally insecure. Anything you plug in is asked what it takes to communicate with the new thing — even if it’s none of its business. In military/security systems, they often just fill the USB plugs with epoxy. You can use usbguard to tighten things up a miniscule bit. IIRC, Qubes runs USB through a firewalled interface in a separate Qube.
When I started learning about this, it woke me up to how much USB stuff I’d picked-up from Weird Stuff (essentially salvage) and just plugged-in.
I thought your previous solution — just run your browser in its own VM — was pretty good. Heck, even having your browser in Docker is better than most. But, yes, Qubes is a refinement from that.

It does that…if your keyboard and mouse aren’t USB.
And of course I am running qubes ON A USB DRIVE right now so that would make things even more problematic.

As a weird example, if you want to conjure a new Qube, it goes back to its own library of template Qubes and spins one. If you, then, do an update/upgrade to ensure you’re running the most recent version of that OS, it will all go pfft when you close the Qube. That means you have to regularly go through your template library and update/upgrade all the software therein.
Yet Another Qubes Weirdism is that it is single-user. It’s all about running a cluster of VMs from a privileged worldview. That is very convenient in some ways — security policies are easily enforced. But there are a variety of regular Linux ways of getting to the same place that may be superior.
I encountered a magazine article from someone in Silicon Valley who used a dedicated cron to monitor his ebay account, check the math [they use floats for dollars-and-cents] and do other tasks. In fact, the AT&T visit where I was harassing their expert was an attempt to expand this to AT&T billing. This makes no sense to run on Qubes. It would be better to compartmentalize the email addy, the account login, the data download, and any validation on an entirely separate computer.
You do all updates and software installs to the template. They are instantly reflected in everything spawned from the template. Unless you fire up one of the disposable machines, stuff you save to your /home directory actually WILL persist. The true disposable is probably best used when you suspect you’re going somewhere dodgy (like opening an attachment from Pgroup2). I’ll eventually open attachments in a disposable by default but be able to open them somewhere more substantial once I’d decided I trust them.
It is an elegant and attractive solution to wrangling your VMs.
Yes. The cool thing is, it solves a pet peeve I had with the old VM manager. I can have a zillion virtual machines, but as long as they’re all based on the same template, I only have to do updates and installs ONCE.
As they put it, you install software on templates, you run them in “app qubes” as they call them.
So that means you don’t have a bunch of updates waiting in a Q.

In principle, running Windows programs under Wine actually exposes kernel calls to pseudo-Windows system calls. Thankfully, there are safeguards.

LOL The spot prices are also very interesting even though the only precious metal I own is mall department store 14k quality or 925 silver jewelry. You can tell I’m not a collector of finer things.
On a completely different note, I just ordered a couple of pairs of crocs with the tiny holes. One pair is dark blue with red across the back sole rise and white bottom soles. The other pair is lavender. I have two pair already and have been wearing them for a long time. Crocs don’t wear out but these new ones are supposed to have more cushy foot beds. That’s why I not only won’t do the bonus cards, I don’t shop at stores that use them.
In general I find that the “sale” prices the cards give you are about what you’d pay somewhere that doesn’t use the cards.
When they institute the programs they initially DO give you good prices for using the cards, BUT within a couple of months the prices creep up to the point where people who won’t use the cards end up paying for the expense of the card program, and people who do let the company compile a list of what they buy AND just pay what the food should cost anyway, so they’re not even getting lower prices in return.
I *hate* those card programs.
Getting that bargain is a trap and I’ve fallen in it. Now I don’t know how to quit them..like how do you go about it.

Just think. Costco called me at my home about the peanut butter I bought several weeks ago. Wife went there today and collected on the last 6 purchases. She buys the big two pack when she shops. Email said just throw it away and collect refund, don’t even have to bring it in. I need to write a Dear Wife letter and tell her why I just couldn’t let her throw away all that peanut butter especially in the face of Cabal fabricated food shortages. Btw Jiff has a really really long shelf life and out lives its expiration date by years. And did I mention I eat it every other day and haven’t gotten sick? Actually I’m sure hardly anyone at all got sick from it. Lots of people there at Costco today surrounding their peanut butter though. That alone is what I found to be sickening. Here’s all these smart intelligent looking people eating the stuff, not getting sick, but they are told to surrender their peanut butter and then they do.
Anyway, my house will likely get raided soon as I just made this open confession on the internets, but I just want to say it wasn’t DF’s fault. I’m just not going to be parted from my peanut butter without better evidence. Nope, I’m not. Keeping it and they will have to pry it out of my cold dead sticky fingers if they want it.
It’s high enough energy content that it’s decent survival food. Not a balanced diet but if it keeps forever some day your most urgent need might be for calories (and it does have decent protein).

The parents of the Uvalde shooter appear to be clueless. The dad was so afraid of COVID that he stayed away from his son. That frustrated the son, who stopped speaking to him. The son wore the same clothes all the time, but dad didn’t get him new clothing and blamed the mom for it. Every one of them — mom, dad, grandfather, grandmother — missed multiple warning signs, not necessarily that the kid would shoot up a school, but that the kid was angry and on the wrong track. They seem very shortsighted and simpleminded.

We used to drive across country every year in the late 1950s through early 1970s, and in 1960 or 1961, traveling through Wyoming, we were driving along, with the train tracks not far from the road, when my Dad yelled out BIG BOY!!! and did a quick (as possible) U-turn to try and catch up. My Mom was shocked, both by the exclamation and the following turn 🙂 but we were able to follow it for a while… This was probably one of the very last ones, as they were being mustered out by then.
Awesome loco. Just missed seeing in down by LA in 2011, when it was in that park down there. We did manage to see the CA State Railroad Museum, which was also pretty good, but the Cab Forward was the biggest (and weirdest, in a way) that they had…
Over here, there’s nothing even close. Some articulateds, maybe a 2-6-6-2, but that’s about it. The museums at Sinshem and Speyer, maybe 40 miles apart, have some big locs (and GIGANTIC ships’ diesels) on display, and it seems almost every town has a train museum or club…

As soon as I heard about the project and saw those videos of them removing it from the fairgrounds in CA, I made up my mind that whatever it took I was going to see it after the restoration. So we flew out. There is one (4012) on static display about 3 hours away in Allentown, PA. We had seen that one, and the sheer size of it (as you know) is beyond belief. The big drive wheels are 68 inches.
I have lots of pictures and video. Maybe I’ll I’ll just post one of the ones I pulled offline when everyone was in the 4014 frenzy and photographers were posting daily.
Or maybe I’ll just throw caution to the wind and post the video we have rolling into Jacksonville, TX.
I think someone had a drone following it, but at ground level it’s awesome (IIRC – we were in a Renault Dauphine, which was an adventure in itself, and a wonder we could catch up, as it had a TON of [French] personality, but not a lot of ooomph)…
I think some folks have posted here about how to “sanitize” pic and videos. I was looking through a pdf file the other day and there was stuff in plaintext in the file that surprised me… Adobe is spyware too, methinks… but there are info-strippers out there as well. I am reminded of the one time about 30 years ago where the job I was on assigned you passwords…random mixes of upper and lower case letters. They’d do this about every thirty days.
One, I had extreme difficulty with. I knew I was making some sort of mistake just typing it (an only semi-conscious process) but I didn’t know what.
Finally, I went to a regular prompt, covered the screen, and typed in the password. When I uncovered it (after making sure no one was in line of sight) I could see which letter I was habitually getting wrong, and never got it wrong again.
It’s funny how muscle memory works. This is an effect related to how you can finally catch yourself flinching at the gun range, when the gun unexpectedly fails to discharge. (Letting someone put–or not put–an empty case in the magazine so you won’t know whether it will or won’t go off when you pull the bang switch is, of course, one way to deliberately arrange for this.)

In other words someone in the Fed Gov would actually have to raise the issue.

I’ve wondered about the door. Related to that, if the school was on lockdown and that was the only open door, I guess the shooter found it pretty easily.
I think “taking out an 18-y-o” — his age — isn’t the issue. The kid had multiple rounds and was using them.
IMO the only reason to prop open a door is to bait in the shooter to a known point and bring him down in a hail of lead.
After seeing how these cops performed with training, I realize that I’m better at school security with NO TRAINING (in school security – whatever that is) AT ALL.

The training is fine. The problem is Arredondo did not follow a lick of it despite having undergone the training twice. Meanwhile below I see you have found the reason for him not following the training with the Beto donation. Arredondo was part of the plan, the kid was part of plan, who ever left the door open was part of the plan. And the plan was to advance gun control. Book em Danno!
Looking at the map that authorities provided —
— the classrooms were on both sides of a hallway with doors that locked…..but what was on the other side of the classroom from the hallway was a solid wall of windows. You can see the same thing in the front view of the school, with the sign. My sister, who teaches elementary school in Oregon, has a similar setup. The perp didn’t have a problem with this — he fired into classrooms 102, 103, and 104 through these windows from the outside.
Why were these guys standing around in the hallway instead of running someone around to the side with the windows? Even if they had a film covering them, it should’ve been possible to break the windows and turn the shooter’s location into a shooting gallery. Besides, the falling window glass would have been a helluva distraction to the shooter.
Incidentally, why wasn’t the school’s PA running something loud and distracting so that any kid not previously noticed wouldn’t inadvertently trigger notice with a sneeze or something? Or so the shooter wouldn’t hear the LEO behind him before he got lead poisoning?
Ground report: This afternoon at the high-end university town grocery store, I met a robot cruising the aisle coming in my direction. I will need to look up grocery store robots to see what they are supposed to do. I tried not to stare. LOL I thought at the time it would be able to do roving inventory-taking or tell people prices for items. One just never knows… Has anyone else been seeing these robots? It looked like a big rectangle with blue lights and a screen on its front.
Found it… his name is Marty and the grocery store is Martins. There is no blue screen on his front, though I thought I saw one. It is tall, not a short little robot. I’m 6 foot tall and it’s at least as tall as me. Do you think it can shoot lasers at uppity customers?
I haven’t encountered one yet. I am always suspicious about being spied on, but if there are cameras in the store anyway, that’s a moot point unless they want an up-close look while I decide which bell pepper(s) I want. But I wonder if the robots can read things from my phone, etc.
Maybe it’s a new one of these, updated 🙂
Inventory control, and/or to discourage/film shoplifters? Or to spit out coupons?

I ran across one of those in a Md grocery store a couple years back, Ilooked at the wife and asked ..what’s that thing? She’s like.. oh yea, and even told me it’s name. 😯 😮
It apparently was malfunctioning, as an employee was franticly pushing buttons on it to do something… and as I was watching.. to my amusement, the employee turned it off and pushed it out of everyone’s way 😂
I’m forgetting what it was supposed to do, she’s asleep.. but will let you know later. 👌
They are supposedly checking the shelves to see what needs to be restocked.
