I got into a branch and made some progress with the Bank of America letter today.
Several things surprised me and several things did not.
First — surprise! — it was an actual letter from BofA — the number it wanted me to call is real, and the Account ending in XXXX actually leads somewhere in the BofA system.
As it turns out, someone used my name (without middle name or initial) and street address to do an online application for a credit card on 6/30/22. They used a telephone number that was not mine. On July 5, the bank wrote a letter saying, “we detected suspicious activity on your credit card and as a precaution, we’ve temporarily suspended your account.” Further, they said, “We tried to call you but unfortunately couldn’t reach you.” Smooth move, trying this fraud over a holiday weekend….
I’m supposed to receive a package of paperwork within 7-10 days for further action….which will likely be worthless. The account is currently spiked dead.
Mind you, I would love to know more details that I am unlikely to get. Was this online application in response to an online offer, an offer in the mail, a click on a QR-code (where? from what device?), something sent to an email (which?), or something picked up in a branch? What were the stats for the online connection? — what IP address did it come from, what was the user-agent information for the browser, what were the contents of every field submitted?
If I got this sort of information, I might be able to tell whether the fraudster was dumpster diving, was d/l’ing generic info off the internet, worked inside their bank, had dropped malware on me, was intercepting my snailmail, or was sneaking into the wireless on the Fiancee’s half of the house internet (my half is wired) — among other possibilities.
They’ll probably tell me nothing. A certain amount of fraud is built into their business model.

I had the BEST experience with my grandson in the last couple of days.
He lost his phone! He’s only twelve, but he has the thing so he can run around with his friends and his mom can still keep tabs on him. She was not happy he lost it.
The day it happened, I told him to pray really hard to God that he would get it back.
The next day, after a question-and-answer session, I thought I might be able to help him find it.
We went to the park where he had been to retrace his steps. We only made it to the entrance. Someone had laid the phone on the fence rail!
I asked him if he had prayed about it, and he said yes. So, I reminded him to say “thank you” to God.
It was a good lesson.

Yes, we need to be right spiritually, but we need to beware of those who wear Christianity on their sleeves while also touting new age beliefs — sometimes so subtly that you have to search to find it. Almost all of them are asking for money, and it is never clear what the money is being used for or is accomplishing. Even some of the doctors sounding the alarm on vaccines are heavily into new age philosophy (NOT Dr. Malone or Dr. McCullough, and some others).
We generally want things to be simple and clear. We want to be able to trust that certain people we have respected and thought were good, are working for the betterment of the country. And they all make themselves appear to be doing so. But things are almost never that simple, unfortunately.

I built two spreadsheets. First one was by state — 50 lines. Start adding columns like “Blue?”, “High Taxes?”, “USDA Climate Zones”, “Disasters” [e.g. Arkansas looks like a very pretty state but has an unusual relationship with tornadoes], “Single City Dominance”….
My second spreadsheet analyzed the remaining available states by census metropolitan areas — I didn’t want to live in a big city, but I didn’t want to live so far from one that there were no hospitals, airports, museums, or other such.

If you are in a metropolitan area containing a med school, you will likely have more doctors per capita than similar metro areas without med schools. And you can either get nearly free care (from students) or high-end care (from teachers).

If you moved the gilfam from CA to WA, you’d realize an instant benefit of ($20,449 – $12,988) x 3 = $22,383 (using 2012 “mostly all-in” figures. That is money that the State of CA has promised the world they would extract from you, that you would no longer have to pay. Ten years later, you know that number is substantially larger today. And, again, that drops away as soon as you file your final CA tax return.

It depends upon what you want. There are three states in TN. The flat Delta around Memphis and Jackson. The rolling hills and exploding metro of the Nashville area and burbs in the central part of the state. The hills, mountains and lakes of east TN with Knoxville, Chattanooga and the Tri-cities of Johnson City/Kingsport and Bristol as the metro centers. The type jobs tie into the three markets. But manufacturing has been booming here, so most other business are as well.
I have lived in the east TN mountains near Knoxville for 38 years and have family here going back at least 5 generations. On one end of our county 20 M tourists a year come. On the other end we are a bedroom community halfway between it all and Knoxville. Will never leave, love it here.
No state personal income tax. No inheritance or estate taxes. Reasonably low property tax and insurance rates, especially outside of the cities. Plenty of dependable electricity and water table due to the TVA. Roads were some of the best until the COVID mess, but are back in the repaving mode now. Friendly people who are more conservative, especially outside of the urban centers. Strongly conservatively controlled state legislature and governor.

At one point, Chattanooga had the fastest internet in the US — and it’s a pretty area — but it does have a bit of a tornado issue.
Nashville is openly Communist, and the suburbs have become quite pricey. Ten years ago, I would have rated Franklin, TN nearly paradise. Now house prices there, Smyrna, Mount Juliet, Murfreesboro, Hendersonville, and the like are easily double what they were then.
Through the roof in the central. I agree on Franklin. It was really, really special back about 20-25 years ago.
