Our Abundant Life

God is in control and His grace is sufficient. His abundant life is here . . . now.
We merely have to keep looking up to see it.
In John 10:10, Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly”. Unlike a thief, the Lord Jesus does not come for selfish reasons. He comes to give, not to get. He comes that people may have life in Him that is meaningful, purposeful, joyful, and eternal. We receive this abundant life the moment we accept Him as our Savior.
The word “abundant” in the Greek is perisson, meaning “exceedingly, very highly, beyond measure, more, superfluous, a quantity so abundant as to be considerably more than what one would expect or anticipate.” In short, Jesus promises us a life far better than we could ever imagine, a concept reminiscent of 1 Corinthians 2:9: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him.” The apostle Paul tells us that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, and He does it by His power, a power that is at work within us if we belong to Him (Ephesians 3:20).
Before we begin to have visions of lavish homes, expensive cars, worldwide cruises, and more money than we know what to do with, we need to pause and think about what Jesus teaches regarding this abundant life. The Bible tells us that wealth, prestige, position, and power in this world are not God’s priorities for us (1 Corinthians 1:26-29). In terms of economic, academic, and social status, most Christians do not come from the privileged classes. Clearly, then, abundant life does not consist of an abundance of material things. If that were the case, Jesus would have been the wealthiest of men. But just the opposite is true (Matthew 8:20).
Abundant life is eternal life, a life that begins the moment we come to Christ and receive Him as Savior, and goes on throughout all eternity. The biblical definition of life — specifically eternal life — is provided by Jesus Himself: “Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent” (John 17:3). This definition makes no mention of length of days, health, prosperity, family, or occupation. As a matter of fact, the only thing it does mention is knowledge of God, which is the key to a truly abundant life.
What is the abundant life? First, abundance is spiritual abundance, not material. In fact, God is not overly concerned with the physical circumstances of our lives. He assures us that we need not worry about what we will eat or wear (Matthew 6:25-32; Philippians 4:19). Physical blessings may or may not be part of a God-centered life; neither our wealth nor our poverty is a sure indication of our standing with God. Solomon had all the material blessings available to a man yet found it all to be meaningless (Ecclesiastes 5:10-15). Paul, on the other hand, was content in whatever physical circumstances he found himself (Philippians 4:11-12).
Second, eternal life, the life a Christian is truly concerned with, is not determined by duration but by a relationship with God. This is why, once we are converted and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are said to have eternal life already (1 John 5:11-13), though not, of course, in its fullness. Length of life on earth is not synonymous with abundant life.
Finally, a Christian’s life revolves around “grow[ing] in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). This teaches us that the abundant life is a continual process of learning, practicing, and maturing, as well as failing, recovering, adjusting, enduring, and overcoming, because, in our present state, “we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror” (1 Corinthians 13:12). One day we will see God face to face, and we will know Him completely as we will be known completely (1 Corinthians 13:12). We will no longer struggle with sin and doubt. This will be the ultimately fulfilled abundant life.
Although we are naturally desirous of material things, as Christians our perspective on life must be revolutionized (Romans 12:2). Just as we become new creations when we come to Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), so must our understanding of “abundance” be transformed. True abundant life consists of an abundance of love, joy, peace, and the rest of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), not an abundance of “stuff.” It consists of life that is eternal, and, therefore, our interest is in the eternal, not the temporal. Paul admonishes us, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:2-3).
For the kingdom of God is . . . of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans 14:17

Thank you, bakocarl! I had never heard of “Count Your Blessings” but looked up the last phrase and see it is in the public domain and was published in 1897 by Johnson Oatman, Jr. It is a hymn. I like it a lot and it is timely for me because I have been thinking about what I want to do for the last part of my life. Stay in Virginia very far from my family and on my own? Be buried here or there? One of my best friends here told me today that he wants to be cremated and that makes me feel sad. He is well-loved by many, and always helps others. While I know our lives here should not focus on material things, and many cannot afford a funeral with all that entails, it just feels sad. I find myself wanting to outlive him so I could be sure he is buried somewhere safely with a nice park bench nearby where people could stop by and pay their respects. Maybe leave a small token on his headstone the way our soldiers sometimes do. I know he won’t be there, he will be in Heaven. But all those he leaves behind will miss him a lot. He said he does not care what is done after he passes away. I hear all that. He’s a good person and I believe he is a Christian. So I will keep thinking about all my blessings and God will show me what I might do in the time I’m given.
Perhaps you might erect a cenotaph for your friend in a spot accessible to his friends.

Amen. It’s a brilliant design. A weird pattern of paradox, that takes a bit of time, patience, and effort to get used to. But to me it is INTIMATELY tied to a gradient of emergence of intelligence in the universe. Abundance comes by the quiet of seeing it and understanding it, not in the noise of chasing it.
I see faith as a very big thing, which we practice in different ways, many of which we don’t even call faith. To me, a LOT of science is based on faith in all sorts of things – and occasionally that faith is misplaced, just like it can be in religion, too. But I have never been misled by faith in either God, or Christ’s perspective of God, so I TRUST in both of them. Likewise, I trust in TRUTH per se, on the advice of God and the fear and awe of His Commandments! FAITH there is rewarded over and over, and TRUST is built even stronger.

Yeah. Well in the middle (about 1:40) where talks about the balloon, he fails to mention the volume of the balloon (which would have to be 22.4 liters). I could imagine someone watching that and thinking that literally a balloon of any size under STP will have the same number of particles in it–which would at best be massively confusing.
Also as of 2019 the mole is not defined by counting the atoms in X grams of a substance of atomic weight X, but rather as being exactly 6.02214076×1023 . All of SI has now been turned into coming from physical constants having their values defined, for instance the meter being defined as a fraction of the distance light travels per second (in vacuum). Even supplementary units like the astronomical unit are now defined constants rather than being the result of a measurement.
Wow and he never came back and tied it to atomic or molecular weights.
He talks about 18.01 grams of water, but never says why that particular amount.

Yeah, it was clearly light on the rationale of “why that particular number”, which is what really ties it all together. But just getting people to the idea that it’s really just a convenient number is a victory, IMO.
There is another nice video that shows the actual weighing of gases, and which focuses on molecular weights, but it’s in French! 😂
Honestly I think the best way to teach it is to not even mention the number at all to begin with. I am assuming they’ve already discussed atomic weight. Point out that in a chemical reaction, one atom of sodium combines with one atom of chlorine. Then ask the students how one could weigh this out beforehand and have no leftover ingredients. Well, sodium has an atomic weight of 22.989 and chlorine. 35.446. So weigh them out in that proportion: 22.989:35.446 and you’ll have nothing left over. The easiest way to do THAT is to weigh out 22.989 grams of sodium and 35.446 grams of chlorine. [Which, by the way is only half a mole of Cl2 gas…so maybe use a different reaction, one not involving diatomic molecules, as an example. But I’m not about to backspace over all of that…so let’s ignore it.]. Those are moles, and those are how moles were used before we knew Avogadro’s number.
Only after showing how it’s convenient to work in “gram molecular weights” (which is where the word “mole” came from) do you then ask, well how many molecules is this? As you’d expect it’s always the same number, because if you’re working with a mole of this and a mole of that, you’re at a 1:1 ratio of atoms (or molecules).
The problem with teaching it by starting with the number, is that knowledge of the number came last. If you START with the number, it’s a bit of trivia unconnected with anything. Why that particular number? Why not just round up to an even septillion (1 x 10^24)?
Yes I know it’s now defined as a specific number, but it’s far more useful to think of it as a gram-molecular-weight at least at first. Yes, some would insist you must start with the definition, but they’re wrong; they’re carrying an often-good principle into a place where it doesn’t work, because we (meaning mankind) didn’t actually start to learn it with this definition.
[And this is why I followed the historical approach in my physics series…it makes more sense if you follow the chronology rather than just at BOOM! everything we know right now, de novo.]
Now that I look back on it, my 9th-grade “pre-chemistry” class used the historical approach. We basically did ratios and weights until it all made sense that what we were doing with physical objects as pretend atoms and molecules was CHEMISTRY. I am pretty certain that the idea of a mole was not even mentioned – and thus the class seemed very primitive when I finally took high-school chemistry. But by the same token, the algebraic foundation seemed second-nature by that point, and the class seemed far too easy. Proof that the method works.
Case in point, one of the suggested videos after this one. It’s by a chemist–one who got knighted, in fact, for educational videos…and he starts off by saying he can never remember the value.
The “gram molecular weight” is useful in the laboratory, the exact value of Avogadro’s number isn’t.
It’s easier to remember Mole Day than the number! That’s how I do it! 😅
That’s not his regular youtube channel. He plugs it at the end saying it’s fun you get bigger explosions in chemistry than in maths (and they show a clip of sodium doing you-know-what in water).

I’m sure some teacher did; I had one in eighth grade who dropped whatever his regular lesson plan was for that day, and walked us through that and its relation to triangular numbers and then ultimately to n(n+1)/2 for triangular numbers. I remember him drawing a grid of sixteen dots then slash through it diagonally, dividing it into a triangle of ten and a triangle of 6, to visually tie the whole thing together.
If every math class was like that, I could have assumed a knowledge of calculus when I wrote the science series.
Yeah, you made a wise choice, given that even occasional knowledge of calculus is no longer a safe assumption, when the destruction of America demanded that AP calculus be shut down to the best of communist abilities.
What I found dismaying was that people were being let into engineering school, not even having had precalc. Bad enough that physics can be taught more efficiently if you can assume the students understand calculus (at least on a conceptual level) than when it’s being done side-by-side with calculus. But these guys weren’t going to have calculus out of the way until the end of their second year!
And of course all engineering is based on physics at one remove or another.
Most of them either flunked out or changed majors.
I am reminded of hearing once that there were two major models for “good universities” (back when that actually meant something). The first was the model my school followed, which was to let lots of people in and weed out the ones who in fact couldn’t hack it. by grinding them into dust. In some ways like boot camp (but in other key ways not). The second is the model Harvard followed–You had to really excel to get in in the first place, but then it was *relatively* non-strenuous to come out the other end with a diploma.
In many cases the first model is compounded by the fact that the school is statutorily required to suck in a bunch of people who just got associates degrees at a junior college…which means the incoming freshman at the university *must* be thinned down. Ironically many of the people who just barely didn’t make it probably were brighter than the associates coming in as juniors. But you’d hear on freshman orientation day…”Look at the person to your left. Look at the person to your right. If you’re here two years from now, they won’t be.” (It wasn’t like that where I went, fortunately, but there was a lot of weeding out nonetheless, basically to just find the people who *really* wanted to be engineers and had the ability to do it.)
I have told people for decades that they should take calc first and take physics later. As an example, take Calc 3A first quarter; second quarter take Calc 3B and Physics 1A; then third quarter, take Calc 3C and Physics 1B.
For one thing, you’ll have smaller and more personalized physics classes. For another, you’ll appreciate all the weird and wild gesticulations the Physics class will go through trying to avoid using the math.
Economics–particularly microeconomics–has a lot of math concepts in it. I recall the professor spending ten minutes trying to explain some concept (I don’t recall precisely which one) and I–having had calc–was thinking, “geez, this is the first derivative” Then after all that, the prof said, “or if you’ve taken calculus it’s the first derivative.”
Five seconds versus ten minutes.
Never assume knowledge (Nor comprehension) of calculus even by those of us who unexpectedly managed to pass a class or two back in the day 😂

I have to show my wife!”

This was in a time when Shallow State had been thoroughly “Obamatized”, and nothing happened that was not being ordered from above. Anything grass roots, or appearing to come from middle management, was PHONY. So this guy was “proposing” a fait accompli – the progs were bringing in Sales Force, and this two-stepper was going to ride up the chain on the magnitude of the decision.
Bad stuff. It’s ALL piecing together.

I am indeed a “critic and a dissident”..I provide a daily aggregated newsletter to senior citizens who aren’t active on the internet and I’ve been aware for about 6 years that my email activity has been under surveillance. However, it’s still a little unnerving when I am overtly alerted to their presence in my system.

You’re likely using Windows on that computer. You can make life difficult for them by putting Ubuntu (free download) on an old computer and using that for politics. Ubuntu is actually easier to install and use than Windows, IMO.
I may do a tutorial on “easy Linux” for people. All you need is a semi-recent old computer with working parts – and by semi-recent, I mean Vista era or later.

It goes without saying…save off ALL of your personal files and data before doing a wipe.
I’m somewhat immune to this consideration because almost everything is kept on a different machine…but most people are not and Windows just makes it worse by encouraging people to keep their stuff on drive C: (Bill Gates is an asshole even without his “health” activism.) “Clean install” then means “blow your past life away.”
Actually, Linux Mint (an Ubuntu derivative) is more like Windows 7 than Windows 8 was — so, if you’re used to Windows, it may be a more comfortable choice.
But if you’re seriously concerned about politics, you might want to look into TAILS. It doesn’t allow anything to change the system, so it’s pretty much immune to malware. As a bonus, you don’t have to do any shutdown routine because nothing gets written to disk — you just turn it off.

Statewide elections are all about the five boroughs. Giuliani was elected because of the squeegee men. True that was a long time ago, but NYC is now squeegee men x 1000.
Hochul is from Buffalo, and “upstate” candidates just do not do well in the boroughs.
Outside the boroughs and the few other cities, NY is as red as it gets, PA red.
Many people here (Buffalo) do not vote, and are not registered to vote. Probably true in the vast rural or small town areas of NY. The sense of futility is too ingrained, justifiably. They live in a very sick state, and there seems to be nothing which can be done about it.
But the Trump signs were everywhere, and some are STILL up. The Zeldin signs are everywhere. Someone cares.
A friend who was an industrial worker, one of those super-intelligent, natural mathematical types with little formal education, understands every detail of what is happening. We like each other a lot, and share about 99.99% pov on life. Our reactions to anything at all match; uncanny.
A couple years ago he told me he had never voted. That was the first and ONLY time I have ever gotten mad at him. Last week he told me he registered to vote so he can vote against the _______ Hochul. Talk about happiness and joy!

Christians have so many true riches to enjoy that it is sad when many try hard to accumulate the uncertain riches of this world. “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth,” said Jesus (Matthew 6:19).
For example, Paul speaks of “the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering” (Romans 2:4) that have led Him to provide our eternal salvation. IMO, the Tyson Illingworth article is devastating. He has permanent CNS (Central Nervous System) injuries from the two Moderna mRNA-1273 (SPIKEVAX) COVID-19 “vaccines” that he took. After he took the second shot, he came down with COVID-19 and almost died of it in the hospital in Australia. He must take heavy painkillers every day but is still living in an agony of pain. He is 35 years old.
The article also mentions a new law in California that “Newscum” signed last month — AB 2098. FTA: “its powers could impose career-ending penalties on doctors who use their own training to treat patients or express a different opinion that goes against government health consensus.” (translation: California can now revoke the medical licenses of doctors who treat patients with I_V_M, or who counsel and/or treat people using the FLCCC protocols, or who are affiliated with AFLDS, and so forth.)

I learned something really cool reading this morning! “Inalienable” is a great word, with a VERY specific meaning:

Something just occurred to me. Read this again, with a new understanding of what “inalienable” means:

The Right to Life cannot be given away, assigned to another, or taken by anyone. Not even a pregnant woman has the right to take that right from a fetus, from the moment it has a “life.” And since even a single-celled organism is alive, that means the Founders told us that a fetus has the right to life than cannot be “aliened.”
The Declaration is the foundational document of all the Founders did, wrote, and created. They did address the issue of abortion.
I remember in the musical ‘1776’, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson are arguing about inalienable and unalienable. Any differences there?

Although in- can mean “inclusion” (as in inland or indwelling), it can also be a synonym for un-, and is commonly used with nouns. One of my professors was a Jewish partisan. He spent a huge amount of time hidden in a Christian home, before hooking up with a unit of fighters.

The timing of the drone attack on the US base in Deir Ezzor coming at the same time that Iran is being accused of supplying drones to Ukraine is suspicious. IF, and its a big IF, the Al-Dimas military base was attacked, I myself would be more inclined to believe it was an American strike in retaliation for the attack in Deir Ezzor rather than an attack from Israel.

The above article, dated today, quotes a source which is dated Jan 2, 2022.
