More seriously, have you ever seen a more blatant example of how the Republican Party simply does not care about what its voters want? (Except of course to figure out what positions they need to mindlessly parrot when doing town halls and campaigning.)
Most of the base loathes McCarthy, and all but twenty of the Republicans in the House of Representatives insist on voting for him for Speaker of the House, again and again, exemplifying the definition of insanity.
For those twenty standing their ground, you are heroes. For the rest…you’re RINO scum (or you’re acting like it so if, deep down, you aren’t I can’t tell and neither can any other actual American, so quit acting before we decide to terminate your careers). Lauren Boebert is not my representative…on paper. That honor is dishonorably discharged by Ken Buck. In spirit, however, Lauren IS my representative.
[Note: Now there are six holdouts. Five of whom say NO WAY to McCarthy. The others, I hope, got some very good concessions that will neuter the RINO to some extent. And of course two hours before this posts, they will try again, so (other than my note to Sundance) this may all be moot by the time it posts.]

Now the most likely outcome is that McCarthy does indeed pick up that gavel, after having made a deal. Hopefully one that renders him powerless to interfere with a MAGA agenda.
RINOs an Endangered Species?
If Only!
(Well this is the perfect time for this to come up in the rotation!)
According to Wikipoo, et. al., the Northern White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) is a critically endangered species. Apparently two females live on a wildlife preserve in Sudan, and no males are known to be alive. So basically, this species is dead as soon as the females die of old age. Presently they are watched over by armed guards 24/7.
Biologists have been trying to cross them with the other subspecies, Southern White Rhinoceroses (Rhinoceri?) without success; and some genetic analyses suggest that perhaps they aren’t two subspecies at all, but two distinct species, which would make the whole project a lot more difficult.
I should hope if the American RINO (Parasitus rectum pseudoconservativum) is ever this endangered, there will be heroic efforts not to save the species, but rather to push the remainder off a cliff. Onto punji sticks. With feces smeared on them. Failing that a good bath in red fuming nitric acid will do.
But I’m not done ranting about RINOs.
The RINOs (if they are capable of any introspection whatsoever) probably wonder why they constantly have to deal with “populist” eruptions like the Trump-led MAGA movement. That would be because the so-called populists stand for absolutely nothing except for going along to get along. That allows the Left to drive the culture and politics.
Given the results of our most recent elections, the Left will now push harder, and the RINOs will now turn even squishier than they were before.
I well remember 1989-1990 in my state when the RINO establishment started preaching the message that a conservative simply couldn’t win in Colorado. Never mind the fact that Reagan had won the state TWICE (in 1984 bringing in a veto-proof state house and senate with him) and GHWB had won after (falsely!) assuring everyone that a vote for him was a vote for Reagan’s third term.
This is how the RINOs function. They push, push, push the line that only a “moderate” can get elected. Stomp them when they pull that shit. Tell everyone in ear shot that that’s exactly what the Left wants you to think, and oh-by-the-way-Mister-RINO if you’re in this party selling the same message as the Left…well, whythefuckexactly are you in this party, you lying piece of rancid weasel shit?
In Defense of Ranked Choice Voting
One of the biggest obstacles to direly-needed change is RINOs, and one of the weapons in their arsenal is the “Wasted Vote” argument.
Periodically a third party has arisen, trying to hold RINOs to account by putting pressure on them from outside of the party, since doing so from the inside has historically done very little good. But, even if you find a third party candidate who perfectly reflects your views, you’re likely to vote for the RINO anyway. Why? Because if you don’t, the Democrat might win, and that would be even worse. So if you vote for that third party (that few will vote for), you’re throwing your vote away and increasing the likelihood of the Democrat winning. (It’s half as much a gain for the Democrat, as actually voting for the Democrat would be. Not as much, but half as much. Because although you denied the R your vote, you did not flip your vote to the Democrat.)
The Republican Party Establishment knows you don’t love them. But they know you hate the Democrats worse, and they use that to continue to herd you into supporting them. With gritted teeth but your vote counts the same whether you cast it enthusiastically, or only because it’s probably a felony to piss on the voting apparatus.
But what if you could vote for that third party without increasing the changes of the Dem walking away with the prize?
This is what ranked choice voting, or instant runoff voting, can do provided it is properly implemented. (And this includes the votes, and only genuine votes, being counted honestly, of course. However, I’m going to compare it to what we have today, and pretend that is honestly done too. RCV can’t work if it’s not honestly administered, just like our current system isn’t working because it isn’t honestly administered.)
The idea behind RCV is to vote by expressing your order of preference. You could vote for the Patriot Party, then for the Rino Party as your second choice (and ignore the Democrat, the Green, the Overt Socialist Party, etc.)
What does this do? It nullifies the wasted vote argument. Your vote will be counted for the Patriot party, first, then instead of it being “wasted” when the Patriot Party loses, it ends up going to the RINO. Actually, it’s just barely possible that the Patriot Party would actually beat the RINO, if people weren’t all individually afraid to vote for it. (It’s just like the famous “Prisoner’s Dilemma” where your fear of other peoples’ actions prevents you from doing the optimal thing. As long as Job Lowe is afraid to vote Patriot because he’s afraid you’ll vote RINO, you’ll have to vote RINO because Job Lowe will.)
So on the whole I like RCV. It gives you a no-risk way to vote against the RINO scum, and in favor of someone who deserves your vote.
The problem is, as done here in the US, it comes packaged with a “jungle primary.” A bunch of candidates get to put their name out there, and the top four (or so) candidates get onto the “main” ballot. This gives party establishments their way around the threat of a good third party bumping them off. Because they know that few people bother with primaries, and third parties don’t have the resources to run in a primary…so they throw two or three establishment hacks into the primary and they will probably beat the third party. The result is the RINOs end up with two of the four slots in the general election, and the Dems get the other two. Now there’s suddenly no third party candidate on the ballot at all.
If we were to combine RCV with the present system where each party could nominate exactly one candidate to appear on the November ballot, or at the very least, ensure minor parties could get onto the ballot with at least one candidate regardless of the primary, we would be getting somewhere, but the establishment is smarter than we like to give them credit for. They will support the jungle primary + RCV “solution” rather than the more appropriate one-candidate-per-party + RCV solution.
It’s not RCV, it’s the primary structure grafted onto it.
Justice
It says “Justice” on the picture.
And I’m sure someone will post the standard joke about what the fish thinks about the situation.
But what is it?
Here’s a take, from a different context: It’s about how you do justice, not the justice that must be done to our massively corrupt government and media. You must properly identify the nature of a person, before you can do him justice.

The prior election must be acknowledged as fraudulent, and steps must be taken to prosecute the fraudsters and restore integrity to the system. (This doesn’t necessarily include deposing Joe and Hoe and putting Trump where he belongs, but it would certainly be a lot easier to fix our broken electoral system with the right people in charge.)
Nothing else matters at this point. Talking about trying again in 2022 or 2024 is pointless otherwise. Which is not to say one must never talk about this, but rather that one must account for this in ones planning; if fixing the fraud in the system is not part of the plan, you have no plan.
This will necessarily be piecemeal, state by state, which is why I am encouraged by those states working to change their laws to alleviate the fraud both via computer and via bogus voters. If enough states do that we might end up with a working majority in Congress and that would be something Trump never really had.

Back before the civil war when banks could issue their own money, there were many oddball denominations including 12 1/2 cent (one bit), $3 and even $7 or $8 bills.
But the Federal government has never issued a $3 bill. They’ve issued a three cent bill (as well as 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.25 and 0.50 bills during the civil war and immediately thereafter–long story), and 3 cent coins, and three dollar gold pieces, but never a $3 bill.

Well for the three cent coin..well, egads, there were two of them. A silver one, very very tiny, and a copper-nickel one that came out the year before our first “nickel” did, so for a while there, the 3 cent nickel was the coin nicknamed the nickel. It was the size of a dime; close enough that I’ve even heard of people finding them in rolls of dimes (VERY unusual occurence!)
& if so rare “quite” valuable, presumably?

I am convinced, MTG supporting Kevin, is NOT in MTG character, that I’ve witnessed the past couple years.

Thus the public twenty were formed to embarrass McCarthy publicly and shake his confidence in order to force change while the remainder of the team played on boosting his ego, but making it contingent on carrying out the rules change.

My guess in some sort of sense, yes. Well at least MTG, hasn’t followed Stefanik close enough to venture a guess except to say she’s married and has child, so likely not or at least not as covert as I suspect with MTG.
We all know McCarthy bunks with Frank Luntz. Just roomies they say, but everyone suspects its more. We also know woman through the ages have wielded power over important men. McCarthy is still single and the only one suspected of wielding power over McCarthy is Luntz. Now MTG is single. What better way to find out what’s happening in the enemy camp while trying to influence the enemy camp at the same time than insert someone like MTG into the mix?
As far as conspiracies go, I’d say this is not too far fetched and is rather basic intrigue kinda of stuff.
I’d go further and suggest that McCarthy is likely aware, but he’ll want the cover she can bring as well and will use her as a something of a sounding board both to gather info on MAGA as well as figure out his limits to straying from the new rules. Meanwhile she’ll keep up the charm offensive in order to gather intel on him as well as attempt to influence his decisions.
She’s still one of the most conservative members of Congress, solidly for getting the J6 captives released and one of the few voices to be against Ukraine from the very beginning. Walking this out to the end of the tree limb where it will likely break it would not surprise me to learn she had her husband divorce her back in September and then planted the info so McCarthy could use it against her, which if I remember correctly he did.

It’s ovbious that MTG and McCarthy seem close. That is no surprise since she wanted him for Speaker. Do we know all her reasons? Did things work out just as she wanted them to, as a positive for us, with McCarthy being under the spotlight, with firebrands like Jim Jordan able to effectively work in other roles, and with McCarthy being (IMO) directly accountable to Trump? Very possibly. Beyond that, I’m not going to read anything into photos. Anyone can hug and smile and be polite and even smooch in photos in public. Anyone can mug for a photo op, and that doesn’t just apply to these photos.
Is MTG working against the MAGA agenda? I highly doubt it, but as always, we will watch. But to go all Eeyore now is not something I endorse or accept. 😂

That will be the motivator for people to vote for change. We need to have our messaging right. These 2 years are to get things in order for 47’s return. Clean up the voter rolls. Get involved locally. Primary RINOs. We need to constantly call and write all of our reps w/our feedback. The Dems are in a bad place electorally, set to lose many in the 24 Senate. If we have a trifecta in 25, we have a chance to get 47’s policies into law. Now that’s a goal to work towards!

Agree to disagree. I think we did witness a great day for America, and this is what I thought before Trump made a statement. It was my observation and opinion without influence from him.
I have never seen negotiations like that, for our side, in my lifetime. They were in the open where people could see exactly what has been covered up in the past, why we can’t seem to get things accomplished, and part of what it will take to get our voices heard again. The process was part of the victory.
We had members of the House refusing to budge until their concessions were met. It was amazing to watch. And I believe they will stand strong. I believe they are representing us and are our voices. I don’t think people are considering one alternative to what just happened: the same old vote going down without opposition, and McCarthy getting in without all the public reveals and concessions he had to make. This is HUGE, and I am encouraged and will take this as a win. For me, it does no good to count every single positive thing that happens as a negative.
IF we actually get what we negotiated (i.e., if McCarthy doesn’t renege or find some way to torpedo it and make it look like someone else’s fault), then it will be a GOOD day, but I guess GREAT depends on where you draw the line between GOOD and GREAT.

Not sure if I’m talking the same thing, but Gaetz describes the negotiations as going back a few months.
I’m referring to the entire process of electing a Speaker, which happened over the course of days. It was very eye-opening. “Day” in a more general sense, with the final vote being the culmination of an extraordinary process.
To be accurate the part of the process we saw was the votes on C-Span or elsewhere. The rest of the process consisted mostly of what you heard or read from third party accounts or videos. It is my understanding, from what I read, that many of the meetings took place behind closed doors which I assume were not open to reporters.
I am not trying to change your mind. It is not unusual for anyone, including me, to put lipstick on a pig because, at least in my case, I want to believe that I should be able to trust people, at least the ones on my “side”.

We have a LONG BATTLE ahead. This WAS a win in the context of that long battle. It was not a complete defeat of the enemy, but it was a win for us not them.
That McCarthy spelled out to the Country in his speech what he wants to change and where he stands I see as a win. He said it to the world and cannot backtrack then we all know. The hidden has been revealed and he has no place to hide.
We all will hold him accountable.
Trump aside, R-Cons got major concessions, by twisting Kevin in the wind.
Next, those concessions need to be implemented. If the concessions are put in play, progress should be clear.

I watched this last night and had no problem with the 20. Where I would question what happened is Gaetz seemed to be threatened by McCarthy and someone else. I’m going to throw this out here. A comenter on Salty’s sight said he thought Trump endorsed McCarthy so that the Dems would not. I don’t know myself but it’s worth a thought. And in the first big debate our new Rep did not make me happy. Harriet I’m watching you. Pointing fingers at my eyes and back at her.
An interesting theory but I don’t follow why that would be important. As far as I know McCarthy did not receive any Dem votes but I do not know that for a certainty. I thought the Dems ran their own candidate for Speaker. I knew there was speculation that McCarthy was courting a few Dem votes to put him over the top but as far as I know it came to nothing. Politics is a strange business conducted by ambitious people so I suppose anything is possible.

Qubes OS related note:
This morning I got “nonced” so I took that as a cue that it was time to re-build this qube (Qubes users call virtual machines “qubes”).
This is not a disposable, it’s an “AppVM” which means it remembers from one time to the next. However, on it firefox is configured to forget everything when shut down, with just a few exceptions; the bare minimum to keep me logged in to QTree. Still every few days I rebuild it.
That involved shutting it down (I closed the browser; it’s gimmicked to shut down when the browser closes), deleting it, regenerating it with a one-line command (I use the salt system that helps Qubes-OS with this), clicking on a desktop icon that starts the qube and the browser. I had to go into Firefox and re-permit six sites to remember their cookies when the browser shuts down–that list is in a file in the home directory of the qube, so it was cut and paste with the mouse. Then I logged into wordpress AND this site (using wordpress again). [If I could figure out how to put those six sites as “cookies not deleted on closing the browser” into a config file, it’d be a lot easier.]
That sounds complicated but it’s only because I don’t like having to log in every time I open the browser.

McCarthy Wins the 15-Round Bout, but Matt Gaetz Is the Real Winner – RedState
Usually when a writer writes, “it was like a 15-round fight,” they’re engaging in hyperbole—but as RedState’s Nick Arama reported, Friday night’s vote for Speaker of the House did indeed go 15 rounds before Kevin McCarthy finally won after facing a rebellion from 20 Republicans who initially refused to vote for him. It was the longest speaker battle since 1853.
California’s McCarthy finally won the speakership, but Florida congressman Matt Gaetz may have won the war. He was the leader of the pack of holdouts, along with Colorado’s Lauren Boebert and Arizona’s Andy Biggs, and for a brief moment in time, they held the future one of the three branches of government in their hands. All eyes looked to them as their yay or nay could change the course of the future.
In fact, the moment was so tense that a fight almost broke out when Mike Rogers of Alabama seemed to lose his cool, as Arama reported.
It was after the 14th vote that Gaetz apparently had a change of heart, approaching McCarthy and saying something which seemed to invigorate the candidate who immediately started animatedly advocating other members to vote “no” on adjourning for the night.
The subsequent vote nuked the motion to adjourn, and after 14 failures, McCarthy finally inched across the finish line with a vote of 216-212 (the 212 going to NY Democrat Hakeem Jeffries) with five voting present, including Boebert and Gaetz.
He is now the Speaker of the House.
However, his powers have been severely compromised, as he was forced to make concession after concession to get the votes of his peers. Who forced these concessions? Yesterday, posted San Diego gas announced a doubling in gas price.
I expect gas price increases will spread to QTreeper’s in LA area, up to Santa Clara County, Nye County, NV and out my way.
My gas bill, two days ago, $242. Average January bill over previous six years, $152.

We are normally up to somewhere north of $400 despite only heating or cooling 2 rooms. If our bill doubles we will be at $800 – $900 and I have zero idea how we can cut back anymore.

Gas cards were chosen few. Not us. I have the heater at 63. Kiddos breathing gets uncomfortable much lower than 60. At least the daytime weather doesn’t usually require heater on, ut we take a lot of showers and cook and do laundry.
One is on the “budget plan” for natural gas. Thermostat is at 66 (never lived with an indoor winter temp that low before). One bundles up inside the house. Space heaters are in use in the mostly-used rooms. Doors to unused / little used rooms are closed and the registers in those rooms are open only a little. The “winter coat” on my Yorkie is being allowed to grow out and there’s a “doggie coat” for him if necessary.
Well, I have a very well insulated house, R25 in the walls, R50 and R30 in the ceilings, and triple-glazed windows. I get through an entire year on about 500 gallons of propane (and that includes cooking and the clothes dryer). That means I can buy it in August when it’s cheapest.
If all else fails…and it *did* a little while ago…there’s the wood stove (not a pellet stove, one that burns logs).
It appears that in North Carolina, if one doesn’t live in or near the mountains, winter weather is considered to be a nuisance that needs to move on quickly. Houses built more than 30 years ago have only minimal insulation, etc. The place where one is at the moment had good insulation installed in the attic before she agreed to move in. Another issue appears to be crawl spaces — they can be traps for moisture, even if they’re professionally “encapsulated.” In addition to potential mold problems, they can be a problem in cold weather (especially in cold, damp weather.)
If the house is cold, something that is really nice to help stay warm is to have warm feet.

Update on our friend’s daughter that committed suicide earlier in the week.
Five people are now the recipients of organs that can extend their lives.
Extensive conversations with her mother have been held between friends. The school plans to have counselors available for kids and teachers on Monday – it was that big of shock to lose somebody to this tragedy that was so loved and respected. The special needs kids are really going to need prayer and special handling as they will not take this well. The church, our former church, will have counseling available for church members as the congregation is also reeling over this as she helped teach the youth.
Her husband is a disabled veteran on a pension. He took care of their young son while she taught during the days. The couple were very happy together. All who were at the son’s party at a local restaurant said everybody had a great time. They drove the short distance home and went inside. She left her husband and son, went to another area of the house and hung herself. He wondered why she had not come back to the room they were in, went to find her and saw her. He took her down and called 911 immediately and the paramedics got there quickly as their station is nearby, but it was too late.
Again, no note, no indication whatsoever something was wrong that anybody who knew her could detect. Happy, doing craft projects for her students, loving on her husband and son, working with the youth at church, talking and visiting with friends, etc. Everything to live for by all appearances.
Sadie pointed out the possibility of anti-depressants being an issue and I immediately thought jabs. I know she took the jabs, Sadie’s suggestion I am waiting until the right moment to ask. Combined they could have definitely been lethal.

I have read that suicidal people often can think of no one but themselves and their situation. In this case, I am struck that she didn’t think of the effect on her students, and especially on her husband and son, whose birthday is forever marked by this tragic event. But none of the signs point to her having been depressed. It’s mysterious, and very sad.

I know that Joffen’s suicide at Ace’s hit me very hard. And it wasn’t “depression” as such — he could hear suicide calling him, even in times he was happy or content. He could be joking around or eating mint oreos, and you’d find out he had gone out and bought a rope.
It was a weird compulsion — like he’d been MKUltra’d….or, indeed, if he had demons whispering in his ear. And, then, he was dead.
As far as MKU and demons, I go with “and logic”. I strongly suspect that human (or possibly any) brain architecture allows for ghosts in the machine and thence in the network, thus usable by MKU. It is likely Turing-stuff – a built-in, in the nature of intelligence, in this universe, and with this mathematics.
In the same way that I believe OCD and the underlying mechanism is leveraged in MKU, I believe that demons, or at least spirits, as such, are also part of the MKU process.

Turing’s suicide can be seen in this context. He was a great danger to them, IMO. I also believe they have worked hard to recharacterize his life, his work, and his importance in a way that supports THEM and not God and “our side”. I went through a bit of the Kubler-Ross DANDA thing….I talked to the police and medical examiner. Then, another of his online friends and I tracked the movement of his remains — they just sat for a time, and I was worried that he might be forgotten. Once they started moving, they headed to Canada to rejoin his IRL family.
They had an online memorial and I signed the guest book, which got me interrogated by his sister, but ultimately resulted in some sense of closure.
I had a coworker commit suicide once.
The company (it was a large corporation) sent out counsellors, and told the management, “Don’t expect anything out of anyone for about a week.”
Indeed that week was spent by many making a scrapbook of him.
