Principalities and Powers

The phrase principalities and powers occurs six times in the Bible, always in the King James Version and its derivatives (NKJV, MKJV). Other versions translate it variously as “rulers and authorities,” “forces and authorities,” and “rulers and powers.” In most places where the phrase appears, the contexts make it clear that it refers to the vast array of evil and malicious spirits who make war against the people of God. The principalities and powers of Satan are usually in view here, beings that wield power in the unseen realms to oppose everything and everyone that is of God.
The first mention of principalities and powers is in Romans 8:37–39: “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” These verses are about the victory Christ has won over all the forces ranged against us. We are “more than conquerors” because no force—not life, not death, not angels, not demons, indeed nothing—can separate us from the love of God. The “powers” referred to here are those with miraculous powers, whether false teachers and prophets or the very demonic entities that empower them. What is clear is that, whoever they are, they cannot separate us from the love of God. Victory is assured. It would be unfortunate to dwell on identifying the powers and miss the main thrust of the verse, which is assurance about what God has done to save us.
Another mention of principalities and powers is in Colossians 1:16, “For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him.” Here is the clear statement that God is the Creator and Ruler over all authorities, whether they submit to Him or rebel against Him. Whatever power the evil forces possess, they are not out of the ultimate control of our sovereign God, who uses even the wicked for bringing about His perfect plan and purpose (Daniel 4:35; Isaiah 46:10–11).
In the next chapter of Colossians, we read about Jesus’ ultimate power over all other powers: “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross” (Colossians 2:15). In keeping with all things, the powers are created by Christ and therefore under His control. They are not to be feared, for they have been disarmed by the cross. The Savior, by His death, took dominion from them, and took back what they had captured. Satan and his legions had invaded the earth and drawn mankind into captivity, subjecting them to their evil reign. But Christ, by His death, subdued the invaders and recaptured those who had been vanquished. Colossians 2:14 speaks of Jesus being nailed to the cross along with the written charges against us. The record of our wrongdoing, with which Satan accuses us before God, is nailed with Christ to the cross. It is thereby destroyed, and the powers can no longer accuse us; we are innocent in the eyes of God. Hence, they are disarmed.
Ephesians 3:10–11 presents different principalities and powers—those of the heavenly realms: “His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to His eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Here we see the angelic hosts being shown the wisdom and purpose of God in the plan of salvation through Christ. Angels, both holy and unholy, witness the glory of God and the preeminence of Christ above all creatures in the church, those who are saved and preserved by His power (Ephesians 1:20–21).
Ephesians 6:12 declares the warfare in which we are engaged as we battle throughout our lives “against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” So, having been saved, we must continue to struggle to do good things in light of the sure victory promised in Romans 8. It is as though we are facing an army of dark powers who have been disarmed from real power and against whom we have been promised victory. It is our job to demonstrate and depend upon the wisdom and power of God in defeating them in our lives. We can do this by trusting in God’s victory.
The final reference to principalities and powers is Titus 3:1. Here they refer to those governmental authorities whom God has placed over us for our protection and welfare. They are God’s representatives on earth, and submission to Him involves submission to His duly constituted authorities. Those who rebel against earthly authorities are “rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves” (Romans 13:2).

At the simplest level, this causes division and wastes a lot of time. But I agree that it is probably a tactic by the enemy to discredit us. For example, if a prominent “natural health” doctor who presents sound information about vaccines is also a flat-earther, who is going to believe him/her?

You know, back when Amelia Earhart attempted to fly around the world, all by herself, with Fred Noonan as a stowaway, it was a long and dangerous endeavor.
But today it could probably be done for around $10k or less in plane tickets if you shopped carefully. You could ride in comfort and safety, and conclude the whole trip in just a few days.
So why doesn’t someone just do that, and videotape the whole thing, and film the whole thing, and broadcast it live from beginning to end, and take along several of the best known critics of a ’round earth’ as eyewitnesses?
Then no one would have a leg to stand on in the flat-earth camp… or we would all find out that the world really is flat.
The point being, in 2023, this could be conclusively proven to everyone’s satisfaction, in a matter of days, for little cost and practically no danger.
A book by Jules Verne [old dead white guy] dealt with this.

The protagonist [For the public schooled among us, this word means the star of the show] was Phineas Fogg.
He took many methods of transport to ride around the world, with various adventures along the way.
Point being – it was a novel that put forth a proposition that the earth was round and going in one direction far enough would bring one back to the starting point.
Of course, mariners had been doing this already. But Phineas “proved” that it could be done in 80 days.
The book only sold well because it was based on a reality – the earth is a globe. Otherwise, it would have had a niche audience.
Alas I already know what the response would be.
They would claim you just drew a circle on the disk with your plane flights. Remember, they think the world looks something like the UN flag.
Unless you ran the flights from Johannesburg to Melbourne to Auckland to Ushaia (near the tip of South America) and timed it carefully, in which case you could show the “circle” was far too small to be along the outer edge of their disk earth, and of similar length to one running at 40-50 N latitude.
Remember that one of their talking points is that flights that far south don’t happen because the “real” distance is out of range of airliners. As Wolf pointed out elsewhere such flights are rare, but not nonexistent.
That’s why this part was included: “and take along several of the best known critics of a ’round earth’ as eyewitnesses”
If the leading members of their own tribe partake in the planning and go along for the trip…
…and if they are converted, then their followers will reject them and find new leaders who will faithfully abide their tradition.
But their numbers will also diminish.
Then take their new leaders, and do the same trip again.
And when the new leaders are converted, the news leaders will likewise be repudiated by the group, and the true believers will again find new leaders to carry the torch.
But the size of the group will be ever more diminished, as the evidence becomes more irrefutable, and every member of their group who accepts the challenge ends up converted.
Or the leaders will catch the round-earthers in some cheat during the trip, expose it, and humanity removes a veil of lies that has stunted our species for centuries.
That’s the enticement and the opportunity.
That’s how you know whether everyone involved has an honest heart and an open mind, if they are willing to put their beliefs to the test and accept the results.
In my experience, many people won’t, for a whole variety of reasons.
I suspect enough of the leaders would agree to participate in the planning and in the trip itself, because to not do so would be tantamount to admitting the belief was more valuable to them than the truth.
Not participating when the opportunity is presented would be discrediting in and of itself.
OPINION: Why bother with all this. These flat earth leaders are doctrinaire disciples They are not interested in evaluating evidence. Flat Earth philosophy is a faith-based philosophy. I know that is a judgmental assessment but their arguments are not reasonable. Whatever their reasons may be they are not about saving us from a round earth deception. I guess in this particular case it is fair to call me a flat earth denier. Usually I don’t get involved in these kinds of debates but in this case I made an exception. For years I considered this a satirical debate about what I could not figure. I guess it is serious to some people. It is one of those topics I categorize as “Who you gonna believe? Me or your lying eyes.” People are free to believe what they want about anything they find interesting but the foundation for Flat Earth is built on sand.

My favorite kind of question!
It cuts right to the heart of a matter, and even better if the answer is something I haven’t fully thought about or already come up with an answer for.
So I would begin by saying because truth matters.
And if the significant majority of people don’t agree on things having to do with reality, society cannot be cohesive.
Or to say it a different way, what good is it to know the truth about some thing, if you are the only one, or one of the few, who knows and/or believes it?
It’s maddening. We have all experienced it nearly every day for the past 2+ years, whether dealing with people about masks, or the jab itself.
The truth is knowable, but for a variety of reasons, ultimately due to the personal interests of a very few in concealing the truth, the majority of people do not know the truth on these two relatively basic issues.
And look at the chaos just these two things have caused.
We live in a world filled with lies of every sort, with new ones (and derivatives of old ones) constantly emerging. We get used to it, like the din of background noise at a crowded restaurant, and desensitized to it.
But it’s always there.
Occasionally, someone in the restaurant has had too much to drink, and gets in a loud dispute with a waiter, and the attention of everyone is drawn to the disruption.
Anything in society that has to do with the nature of truth or falsehood which rises to that fairly low yet significant threshold, gaining the crowd’s attention, is worth resolving.
Because that’s the moment to strike, when they’re paying attention.
Like flat earth vs. round earth.
It’s a source of never ending controversy. Everyone ignores it 99% of the time, but like every ingrained controversy, it always comes around again, dividing people on either side of the issue.
Think of it like a garden, and the flat earth / round earth is a weed. Most everybody ignores it, but if weeds are not uprooted and removed, pretty soon they spread, and take over the whole garden.
This particular weed has grown big enough that it’s worth eradicating. Or, conversely, maybe in the process we find out that what we thought was a weed is actually the flower, and the rest of the garden was the weeds.
Either way, a resolution to the controversy would be a good thing. Sometimes the garden needs to be weeded.
Due to the number of weeds (lies, controversies), you have to pick your battles. It’s best to pick battles which can be narrowly defined, and then won.
This (flat earth vs. round earth) is, I think, just such a battle.
It could be resolved, to the point that at best it retains fairy tale status (if flat earth is conclusively disproved), or in the unlikely event that it turns out the round earthers were wrong, that’s a discovery worth knowing!
So imagine a group of people dedicated to this sort of thing. Similar to the TV show MythBusters, except they set out to identify and conclusively prove, one way or the other, controversies which create chaos in society.
There’s no shortage of targets since 2020, that’s for sure 😁
Essentially, it would seem to be good to resolve controversies, if they are resolvable.
This one, flat earth vs. round earth, seems eminently resolvable, and provable, to the satisfaction of nearly everyone involved or interested.
That being the case… why not do it?
That is a detailed answer. It is obvious to me that you consider it a debate worth resolving. That is fine. My position is that it is extremely challenging to argue against a strongly held belief. I guess there is nothing wrong with giving it a try. I predict it will be frustrating. May good fortune attend you.

I think it pretty clearly has to do with that last word, ‘belief‘. Because if we believe something, we start out with a nearly insurmountable bias.
It appears to be human nature that we look for things which support what we already believe, and look away from things which contradict what we believe.
Why is that?
I suspect it’s often because we are heavily invested in things which we strongly believe, and to upend that belief — or to allow even the possibility that it might be upended — would be disruptive to one’s income, or family, or social circle, or all of the above (and more).
Which is why it is so important to always have our foundations in truth in the first place. Because if a foundation with cracks slips past inspection, and gets built upon, it becomes like a Jenga Tower.
If we look directly at the crack in the foundation, after we have built four or five stories on top of it, then we’re going to have to do something about it.
And it’s not going to be cheap or easy. We’re going to have to move everybody out of the building, tear everything down, fix the crack in the foundation, and then rebuild.
Most people are content to live with the crack in the foundation, and just not look at it.
Other people can’t stop thinking about it, it keeps them up at night, so they have to fix it, almost no matter the cost.
Why are we not taught, from childhood, to recognize the trap and consciously avoid it, by being always willing to question what we believe, instead of reflexively defending what we believe to the death (figuratively speaking), which appears to be human nature?

Agreed again. On an individual basis it is nearly always frustrating, because we are rarely in a position to expend the resources (time or money) required to actually satisfy the opposition.
And the opposition can usually defeat the entire endeavor by simply refusing to be satisfied.
It would require a (figurative) headlock, to focus the direction of attention.
And a Clockwork Orange style eyelid opener device, to prevent the head, once properly immobilized in a (figurative) headlock, from closing its eyes.

And that almost has to be the fun part, resources allowing, to create scenarios where people would volunteer, to be incentivized, to disarm themselves, to open their minds, to allow the truth to enter, and experience the results.

Ethically, it raises the always interesting question, is it better to know the truth if the truth is unpleasant, or is it better to continue in believing that which is false?

Ultimately they’re taking Flat Earth on faith and *rationalizing* their choice, not actually being rational. Once someone takes something like that on faith they’ll spend great energy refusing to accept contradictory evidence.

I spent the approximately 38 minutes looking at this. There is this guy David Weiss, who argues that the world is flat and the main counter-argument is that NASA is faking everything.
tl;dr: waste of time. There is a display of complete ignorance of geometry, astronomy, and engineering going on here.
Any nuggets of criticism of the nebulous «they» vanish in the general noise and ignorance.
OK – I’m taking one for the team.
1.
I went into it for 5 minutes – past the ads – and the first argument is the “plane routes”. The argument is that there are no plane routes from Australia to Chile. On the flat Earth, they’re far apart, and supposedly this explains that most routes between AUS and CHILE are “up and around the Pacific” in a clockwise direction.
I investigated that, and it’s simply not true. There are not MANY direct flights, but there are some, and you just have to be persistent to find them. It’s not a popular route, so they can’t fill planes.

Next, the thing about NASA faking pictures. NASA will very frequently CREATE images – and they will SAY SO in the caption – to show things that don’t show up in the visible spectrum or in photos – and I strongly suspect that’s what’s going on here.
So yeah – I will admit that it sure looks like they used the SAME picture of Jupiter – but WHY? Did they just create a teaser image showing a aurora? Did they actually ENHANCE an old image to show a hidden aurora? Or is that aurora picture something else?
So off I run to do a search, and find this….

Thanks for the deeper digging and the tip at the end, about looking at smaller parts. The rate at which the information (or bullshit) comes is overwhelming. Which might be part of the producer’s intention. I just sat and went all — whoa, this is so unreasonable and so obviously wrong, and these guys sit there with their smug laugher.
Flat Earth is a great influencer that is used by the IC to discredit people. I think it’s worth it for every person to confront it, personally, because it teaches skepticism, but in the end, if you don’t get the debunk, you’re not fully getting how modern science has to move beyond our born senses to include our ability to abstract – but that is part of religious belief as well, so I think it should come naturally to people who believe in the Abrahamic God.

Eratosthenes measured the Earth, quite cleverly, but he wasn’t the first to realize it wasn’t flat. He was beat to that realization by at least three centuries. He wasn’t the first non-liar.
The thing about this is, you do not need sophisticated scientific instruments, or even primitive stone-knives-and-bearskins stuff that was too expensive for a typical farmer back then (dirt, dirt poor) to see the evidence that the earth isn’t flat. If that were the case, then yes you could plausibly suggest that the people with access to the instruments are liars (though you’d have to explain why so many people repeat the same lie).
You need two eyes, patience (you will need to wait for two lunar eclipses), and a functioning brain. That’s it. It’s accessible to anyone.
There are many different versions of the flat earth hypothesis. The ancients believed that the sun actually went below the plane of the earth at sunset, then traveled under the earth and went back above it in the east at Sunrise. In other words, their model of celestial motions actually made sense; the difference between their notion and ours is the shape of the surface we’re standing on.
The sad thing is the new version of flat earth that’s currently in vogue is absolutely ridiculous as it can’t explain the existence of sun or moon rise–because the sun and moon never drop below the horizon in that model. Nor can it explain other celestial motions, apparent or otherwise.

Hah! I just got another absolution letter from BofA.
What has been happening is that someone is repeatedly applying for credit in my name with my address from BofA, but not necessarily from the bank. One time, it was to purchase a video game in a store. The next time, it was something else. This last time, it was an Alaska Airlines Visa card.
That it keeps happening to me makes me think that it is somewhat personal; that it always involves BofA has me suspecting there may be some internal connection there.
Anyway, this Alaska Airlines card (with a $16,000 limit) showed up in the mail around Thanksgiving. I immediately called it in as unauthorized, and they finally got around to admitting it’s fraud as of January 14th.
How is anyone supposed to ever get anything done when they have to keep warding off schemes, frauds, and grift?
Do you still have any ties to BoA? Bank accts credit cards….

On the other hand, you can take some comfort in the fact that whatever piece of shit is doing this to you also can’t get anything else done.
It would seem that there is some sort of legal action you can take, an affidavit of some kind (some sort of Notice of Intent), that states you intend never to apply for a BofA line of credit of any type, which could be served to the bank. Admittedly that would require a legal fee but it should end your legal liability for any future event. There are many other banks where you can obtain any required future credit service.

Texas native R’Bonney Gabriel was crowned as Miss Universe last Saturday, but days later, individuals on social media accused the contest of being rigged.
Gabriel was the first Miss USA to claim the Miss Universe crown in 10 years. People on social media thought the competition was rigged in favor of Miss USA, calling the competition a “fraud” and tagging their posts with the hashtag #rigged.
Some think the competition was rigged in favor of Miss USA because the new owner of Miss Universe, Anne Jakrajutatip, also owns Miss USA. Jakrajutatip is a Thai businesswoman who acquired The Miss Universe Organization in October for $20 million. Fans of the competition also pointed out that Gabriel did not deserve to win due to her difficulty walking in her NASA tribute costume.
Even other contestants claimed that the competition was unfair. In response to similar allegations in October, Gabriel stated, “It was not rigged because I would never enter any pageant or any competition that I know I would win. I have a lot of integrity.”
Gabriel has her own sustainable fashion brand called R’Bonney Nola. She gives her time as a lead sewing instructor to a nonprofit in Houston called Magpies & Peacocks. I saw the entire game. I did not notice anything unusual about the call of the game. It would be extremely difficult to throw a NFL game. Bengals were in control pretty much throughout the game. The CBS broadcast made mention of Hamlin several times during the game. They did not seem to be participating in an attempt to change the subject involving Hamlin.
I watched it as well and I agree. The Bengals are simply the better team. They were starting to prove that before the Hamlin medical issue on the field the last time they played.
