I’m writing this email in response to what’s happening in Ohio. Over the last few days, we’ve received an overwhelming amount of questions surrounding the train derailment and spill; and the effectiveness of our products regarding protecting yourself and your family.
Below, you will find a list of chemical threats released in Ohio (the ones that we know of) and the effectiveness of the NBC-77 SOF filter in capturing those threats.
First, it’s essential to understand how filters are classified. If a filter is certified per the EU standard, it will have an alpha-numeric code on the label, which will dictate which threats it’s effective against and at which concentrations.

We have also provided a list of known threats from the Ohio train derailment and chemical spill:
Vinyl chloride: A colorless gas used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics, it is highly flammable and decomposes to produce toxic fumes. According to the National Library of Medicine, it is also carcinogenic and can cause other health issues.
NBC-77 SOF Effectiveness: type A or better AB – the NBC-77 SOF provides reliable and long-term protection against this threat. We tested this a couple of years ago with the same filter in actual conditions at the factory–which produces vinyl chloride, and produced excellent results.
Isobutylene: a gas used in antioxidants – including food, packaging, supplements, and plastics (butyl rubber) and in the production of high-octane aircraft fuel.
NBC-77 SOF Effectiveness: the boiling point is very low, so even an AX filter should not be used, and at high concentrations, only SCBA filters should be used. Low concentrations are not toxic, but higher concentrations may have a narcotic effect depending on the exposure time. Of course, very high concentrations may have a lethal impact.
Butyl acrylate: is a clear liquid used to make paints, sealants, and adhesives. It is flammable and can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation.
NBC-77 SOF Effectiveness: type A – boiling point 138°C – the filter provides long-term reliable protection.
Ethylhexyl acrylate: is a colorless liquid used to make paints and plastics. It can cause skin and respiratory irritation and, under moderate heat, can produce hazardous vapor.
NBC-77 SOF Effectiveness: type A – boiling point 214°C – the filter provides long-term and reliable protection.
Ethylene glycol monobutyl: a colorless liquid used as a solvent for paint, inks, and some dry cleaning solutions. It is classified as acutely toxic, can cause severe or permanent injury, and is highly flammable. Vapors can irritate the eyes and nose, and ingestion can cause headaches and vomiting.
NBC-77 SOF Effectiveness: type A – boiling point 171°C – the filter provides long-term and reliable protection.

Please Note: Organic gases like methane, ethane, propane, butane, and isobutylene can not be effectively adsorbed by physical adsorption. Therefore no filter should be used for protection against those gasses. The good thing is that these gases are not highly toxic. When you use propane/butane while cooking on a barbecue, you can inhale small amounts without the risk of poisoning. But at very high concentrations, we recommend using isolation PPE (SCBA) for protection.

Authorities realized that if the tankers burst WITHOUT BURNING, there would have been the likelihood of drifting gas clouds of vinyl chloride AT GROUND LEVEL which would have had a much larger radius of potential FATALITY, and thus they would have needed to go with an even bigger EVACUATION.
But if it BURNED, the upward draft would put everything higher into the atmosphere, with NO DANGER OF IMMEDIATE FATALITIES ATTRIBUTABLE TO AUTHORITIES, and even more importantly, NO NEED TO INCREASE THE EVACUATION.
Authorities chose the lesser of two evils.
I will be honest – if presented with the two scenarios and no third WOLF-SUGGESTED OPTION (drain the tankers to empty tankers by equilibration, which needs to be the new standard), then I believe that even PRESIDENT TRUMP would have chosen to do the “not-so-controlled” option of a “QUICK BURN” rather than to risk a WORLD WAR I LEAK.
I’m not being political – I’m being scientific. I believe that they chose to avoid any chance of massive acute fatalities.
I prefer the third option…
Or how about the fourth — DO SAFETY INSPECTIONS ON THE FRIGIN BRAKES!!!
Truckers have a long check list they go down to help prevent such accidents, don’t trains?
My husband is a train fanatic he said if the crew on the train paid attention and not keep driving the train until the derailment it all would have been avoided. Apparently the rail wheels were already on firer and they ignored the warning or the safety rules implemented were ignored. Could have been they just wanted to get to their end station or ignored the problem because nothing ever happened.
How about let’s not transport hazardous chemicals in these quantities by train?
If these chemicals arrived at their destination and were safely offloaded, would they require hazardous containment for safe storage? If so, why would there be any less stringent requirements for transport?
Quantities do NOT bother me at all.
Can be safely done with preventive ,maintenance, proper monitoring AND effective responses, if shit goes bad.

Fed OSHA relatively speaking is very small. For these situations you need an experienced HAZMAT team that works with local fire. Now that could just end up being Billy Bob and Uncle Fester. Real world experience matters here.
It is one thing to train for these scenarios, another to actually live through one. They may have made the best decision based on their available options, or they just may have caused the biggest disaster since Bopal, India.
Will not know until the after action reports get done. In the mean time if you live near it, or down wind do your best to avoid it. Mother nature is very good at cleaning up a lot of these messes.

And what’s their plan to prevent Ohio and the Ohio River Basin from becoming the world’s largest SUPERFUND site? Or are they just planning to extort Northfolk Southern as a cash cow like they did BP?

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Patterson OH to E Palestine is about 150 miles. I am sure they have helicopters and sand bags and other chemical containment stuff that could be used in an emergency. I am sure the National Guard also had the equipment and man power.
There is also CONTAINMENT MATERIALS used to line ponds. They have stuff called “POLYMERIC FLEXIBLE MEMBRANE LINERS”

My husband used to install something called pit liners in the oil & gas field in Northern Michigan which were to collect the contaminated water that would come out of those wells, perhaps similar to what you are describing. They were large black plastic sheets that the guys would unfold to cover the entire pit that was surrounding the oil &/or gas well.

I’m not trying to bring over hostilities from yesterday, and I would like to see all sides on this willing to state their peace – in peace.
Personally, I get both sides. I personally believe that there is a lot of symbol-fighting going on underneath things (that’s a “Q” position, IMO), and I believe it goes deep into the “matrix” / “simulation” / “reality” / “whatever” that we inhabit. So I don’t throw symbol stuff out, and I believe that it bears examination. But symbols are not simple – they’re tricky, and smart, and pulling our own perspectives out of them is both necessary and impossible – another contradiction sewn into the fabric of things.
So ANYWAY, I hope that people can just be honest and accepting that there ARE two sides to “symbology” and that it’s always a debate, so please debate calmly, welcomingly, and respectfully, and don’t be shy.
Now I just took a position that is gonna catch a lot of grief. People are going to criticize this position, and I’m gonna be calm and strong in holding my ground.

My thoughts exactly. I believe he has a good heart and is being heavily influenced. The jacket is horrendous. As a Chemist who spent her entire career in factories. I would say this guy is a bit off based.

In the first place I worked, it was so bad the chemical company next door called the cops. (I stayed a month)
In the second place, instead of going from lab bench — where the co-owners wife used dry, ice and acetone to cool the reaction — to a pilot plant, they skipped the small scale up and went directly to commercial size vessels. Lucily I was on vacation when thevessel blew up.
In the third place, we had a HAAAAaaaavd business school graduate hired in as plant manager. He stayed a year and then booked it with a resume showing how he increased profit… We found out the next year that profit was from cutting maintenance to the bone. An extruder went down and then we found out he nixed orders for any replacements! The screws are custom built and need at least 6 months to build. The company spent millions getting the inventory back up.
At the same place I wanted to do incoming inspection, at LEAST a quick IR scan to make sure it was the correct chemical. No added cost just a few minutes to have a factory worker grab a sample for me to run. I go a NO! Well purchasing blew it and ordered trichloroethane instead of the cleaning solvent trichloroethylene. The mistake cost us a black eye with our best customer and another million.
Next company was a lot better run until we again got a useless plant manager. Another QC engineer and I repeatedly told managment to NOT USE A BLOW TORCH to unfreeze a pipe caring a flamable liguid. (A heat jacket or heat gun would have worked) We even confiscated the darn torches.
It didn’t work and the joint leaked. The fire put an eighteen year old boy in a wheel chair with his hands fused for the rest of his life…
And then ther was the wall bowing out at the next plant and the extruder blowing up at the one after that…

Behind my place was a fence and sometimes a ram on the other side. He had big equipment, so to speak. He went about his business but I was glad there was a fence between us. It was very pretty up there and I could see fireworks from all the little towns across Silicon Valley. Very peaceful with great neighbors including a few farm animals.
If I have a ram lamb from a baby and DO NOT make him a pet. Just handle him for worming and vaccination (Rope and pin down) then he thinks I am bigger and meaner and will respect me. It is the older ones that you have not handled that are really dangerous. Also as a female he is not as apt to challenge me.

Pregnant 26-Year-Old Mother-of-Three Dies Suddenly After “Sudden Cardiac Arrest,” Unborn Baby Dead As Well
Zoe Green, 26, from Kettering, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on February 7 and was found dead on the floor in her bathroom by her mother.
She was seven months pregnant with her fourth child, who she had planned to name Cobie, but the baby boy did not survive after his brain was deprived of oxygen.
Zoe was mother to Lincoln, five, Oakley, four, and Ralphie, who is just 10 months old.
Family friend Kelly Mercer, has so far raised more than £3,000 for Zoe’s children and to contribute towards the costs for the funeral.
Kelly, who spoke to Zoe the day before she died, said: ‘Zoe went to school with my daughter. I’ve known her all her life. On Tuesday morning she rang her mum, at five or six in the morning, saying she didn’t feel very well.
‘She goes to Leicester Royal Infirmary because there’s nobody that does post-mortems on pregnant ladies in the area.
Her mum lives five minutes away but by the time she walked down Zoe was dead on the floor in the bathroom.
‘She leaves behind three children and then obviously she was seven months pregnant.
