Just remember…we might replace the RINO candidates. (Or we might not. The record is mixed even though there is more MAGA than there used to be.) But that will make no difference in the long run if the party officials, basically the Rhonna McDaniels (or however that’s spelled–I suspect it’s RINO), don’t get replaced.
State party chairs, vice chairs, secretaries and so on, and the same at county levels, have huge influence on who ultimately gets nominated, and if these party wheelhorses are RINOs, they will work tirelessly to put their own pukey people on the ballot. In fact I’d not be surprised if some of our “MAGA” candidates are in fact, RINO plants, encouraged to run by the RINO party leadership when they realized that Lyn Cheney (and her ilk) were hopelessly compromised as effective candidates. The best way for them to deal with the opposition, of course, is to run it themselves.
Running good candidates is only HALF of the battle!

Globular Clusters
Time for a wrenching change of subject…because JWST took a picture of a globular cluster.
I was pretty much done with orbits anyhow.
A globular cluster is a grouping of stars, tens of thousands or even millions of them, forming an approximate sphere. The stars are very closely packed in the center and as you move away from the center the density decreases markedly.
This is Messier 2, a globular cluster that (as seen from Earth) is in the constellation Aquarius. (Note this is not the JWST’s image–it’s from Hubble.)
Charles Messier in the 1700s was interested in comets. In telescopes, before they get close to the sun and (possibly) become bright enough for people to see with the naked eye, they simply look like fuzzy blobs. Also, since they orbit the Sun, they move against the background stars (which are at least ten thousand times further away). So Messier would record a fuzzy blob in a certain location then check that location again a few days later. If the blob had moved, he likely had a comet. Otherwise, it was a permanent feature of the nighttime sky.
There were enough permanent blobs that Messier made a list of them, so when he stumbled across that blob again, he’d know he could ignore it. This is now the Messier catalog of about 110 objects. Many of the most famous nebulae in the night sky are Messier objects; many nearby galaxies are too. (Andromeda, for instance, is M-31, and the 800 bazillion ton gorilla of the Virgo cluster, M87 (the one with the really, really big black hole in its center), well, is a Messier object.
Many of Messier’s blobs were fuzzy spheres in his telescope (which was fairly primitive); as optics got better it became apparent they were clusters of tens of thousands or even millions of stars.
It also became apparent that there were quite a number of these in our galaxy…but they do not lie in the plane of the galaxy like the spiral arms do; they are in a swarm in what’s called the galactic halo, a spherical region centered on the bulge at the center of our galaxy. So if you imagine the Milky Way galaxy as, say a CD, some of the clusters are above it, and some below, most are just a few inches from the center of the cd. Other galaxies have them too, and they’re readily visible in powerful telescopes.
Another quirky feature about globular clusters is that the stars in them tend to be very old, over ten billion years old. For a while, astronomers would measure the age of a globular cluster, and come up with a number greater than the cosmologists’ number for the age of the universe. Of course this was absurd…how can an object in the universe be older than the universe. Over a number of decades as measurements were refined the discrepancy went away, but nevertheless, globular clusters are old.
Probably the most famous globular cluster (often just called “globulars”) is Omega Centauri. It’s so bright it was mistaken for a star by the ancients. It does not have a Messier number as it’s not readily visible from northern Europe where Messier worked–but folks living in Australia get to enjoy it. Another famous one is the Hercules cluster, M 13. It’s an easy one to find even with binoculars since it lies on a line between two stars in the Hercules “keystone” pattern (four stars that look like they outline a keystone).
JWST took the following picture of M 92, which is also in Hercules. It’s one of the brighter and more spectacular ones but is overshadowed by M 13. It’s particularly interesting because it’s one of the oldest globular clusters, somewhere between twelve and 13 billion years old. (The universe itself is presently believed to be 13.787 billion years old, give or take 0.02 billion years.) Scientists hope to learn something new about the universe as it was back then.
(We already know from spectrographic analysis the stars shown have almost no “metals” (astrophysicist terminology for elements other than hydrogen and helium) in them…they formed before the elements themselves were formed in more massive stars.)
The first thing you’ll notice is that the center of the cluster is missing. This was deliberate. The astronomers using JWST were interested in the outlying stars and the millions of stars clumped together in the center would have washed them out. They were able to use a gap that exists between two of the NIRCam long wavelength detectors. Talk about making lemonade from lemons!
M92 is about 27,600 light years away. It’s 16,000 light years outside of the plane of the Milky Way and 33,000 light years away from the galactic center. (We are about 27,000 light years from the center.)
This is of course a false-color image, because it’s JWST. None of what you see in this picture is actually visible to the human eye. Rather, this image was taken at four infrared wavelengths we can’t see, then the four each given their own color of visible light and the group combined together into one image. From the NASA website: “This image is composite of four exposures using four different filters: F090W (0.9 microns) is shown in blue; F150W (1.5 microns) in cyan; F277W (2.77 microns) in yellow; and F444W (4.44 microns) in red.” For reference, red light is about 0.7 microns and blue light is 0.4 microns. All of the things seen in the picture are therefore “redder than red.”

The hell with that! The power bill would kill me.
I was able to considerably reduce my power bill by shutting off a computer I almost never use, trading in the other one (the one I am on right now) for an Intel NUC, and no longer using my B&W 808s with 300 watts per channel on standby. The last was forced on me actually, my pre-amp relies on HDMI processors which keep crapping out and needing a reset. I got tired of reconfiguring the whole system every month or so after doing a hard reset and Just stopped using it. (I used to like Denon stereo equipment, now I will never buy it again as this is the second unit I have had with that problem.)
I could lower it still further if I didn’t have Darwin requiring continuous 100+ watts either for his lamp or heat.
My fridge is nothing special (not super efficient or anything like that); it’s probably my biggest energy hog now.
Do you use a dryer? Because THAT is the energy suck in a house.
I reduced my power bill by $50 a month, just by hang-drying all my laundry.
Yes, it’s a pain in the ass, especially in winter. But I have a four-poster bed with a canopy frame, which is now where I hang wet clothes!
I do use a dryer…but it’s gas. So it just needs a 120V line to turn the drum.
It sucks energy but not electrical, and even if you were to consider both electrical and gas it’s more efficient because you’re simply burning something and using ALL of the heat (since heat is the point) instead of losing so much of it to thermodynamic waste as happens at an electrical generating plant.

A gas dryer can be expensive as heck to set up, if you have to have a gas line run to your laundry room. The nature of gas piping is such that you practically need to disassemble the entire set of lines inside your walls to make a change, unless someone put in a tee and plugged one branch of it.
Oh yea. Learned that, when I wanted a gas line put in for an emergency generator.
Thankfully, present laundry room, came with a gas line/valve.
Years ago, I converted a nat gas dryer to run on propane. I hooked it to the setup from a backyard grill. Had to turn the valve on the propane tank to start it but the piezo lit it up just fine. Used it for years.
Mine does run on propane because the whole house does. A matter of switching out nozzles.
Which, BTW, is a good argument for using tees everywhere you’d use elbows on your gas line and plugging the other side if you’re building a house from scratch.

Indeed. I did do my own gas lines (and it was a nasty learning experience). I planned on a gas dryer in the first place. Honestly the only tee I put in was where I might want to run a line to a gas generator someday.
For those who have been so fortunate as to avoid the subject entirely, gas lines are crazy because the service pressure is so low. If you have a tee where one side goes to your 50K BTU cooktop and the other goes to your 50K BTU furnace and it’s underbuilt, you can get into a situation where every time your furnace goes on your cooktop goes out.
We had a fireplace log-lighter, a gourmet cooktop, a water heater, and a furnace, and had to upgrade the piping all the way back to the meter.
Yes that is why I have electric dryer. I like gas dryer seems more efficient. I prefer hanging wash out if I ever get a wash line 🙄

but also all that is good and true in Western Civilization – our common home.””If his March 16th statement is anything to go by, Donald Trump has, for one, come out guns blazing at the Globalist American Empire like never before, and, two, he has highlighted important issues that are completely at odds with the current Western, Ukraine-centric narrative of “wanting to see Russia weakened”, to which many so-called conservatives have signed up to. Remember that mini gun scene from Terminator 2? Well, in terms of political rhetoric, Trump’s statement was the sure equivalent.
As I have only now read the entire transcript of the statement, it has only now dawned on me how radical Trump’s message was.
He opens his statement with the following observation: “We have never been closer to World War III than we are today under Joe Biden. A global conflict between nuclear-armed powers would mean death and destruction on a scale unmatched in human history.”
Trump indicates that only new leadership can change this destructive course of action.
It would not be a stretch to point out that the same animating spirit that pushed President Kennedy to sue for peace in October 1962 is animating the current sentiments expressed by Trump. If one considers how the cabal of warmongers surrounding JFK were all in for a showdown in the Caribbean and connects this with the observations that followed Trump’s statement, one could say its “deja-vu all over again.” Trump calls for nothing less than a complete overhaul of the “State Department, the defense bureaucracy, the intelligence services” to “fire the Deep Staters and put America First.” If this does not sound like an expanded version of splintering the CIA “into a thousand pieces” and scattering it in the wind, as JFK was reported as saying after the Bay of Pigs debacle, I don’t know what does. Trump is tapping into a tradition of foreign policy realism and restraint that stretches from George F. Kennan, through Senator Robert F. Taft, Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, the populists Pat Buchanan, Ross Perot, Ralph Nader, the great Ron Paul, and taking it to the next level – clearly identifying the culprits and calling for their expulsion from the realm of decision making.
Talk about being unleashed.
But the essence, the “meat”, if you will, of Trump’s March 16 statement, what makes it truly radical, are the following words: “Our foreign policy establishment keeps trying to pull the world into conflict with a nuclear-armed Russia based on the lie that Russia represents our greatest threat. But the greatest threat to Western Civilization today is not Russia. It’s probably, more than anything else, ourselves and some of the horrible, U.S.A. hating people that represent us.”
You may ask, Dear Reader, what does all this have to do with Poland? If Trump really believes what he outlined in this segment of his short address and wants to align the debate in the terms set above, he would be doing my native Poland a big favor. Not to dwell too much on the history of Polish-American relations after 1989, I would humbly submit the reader reach for John Pomfret’s excellent book From Warsaw with Love. Polish Spies, the CIA, and the Forging of an Unlikely Alliance. It’s enough to say that in his review of the book, The Washington Post’s Joseph Kanon summarized the history of the literal CIA takeover and subordination of the Polish intelligence agencies as follows: “Pomfret’s apt title is only half a joke. The Poles were prepared to do almost anything to cement the relationship.”
The word anything is the one which needs to be stressed in that observation.
Ever since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, to quote Dr. Gordon Hahn, Poland has been acting as “chief-arsonist in the region”. If the neocons have wet dreams of what a perfect policy aimed at Russia would look like, Poland, sadly, is exhibit A.
Our essentially open-border policy of flooding Poland with anyone from Ukraine since February 2022 has hit Poland with a human wave unseen in our history. As was pointed out in a policy paper last year: “With the scale of the Ukrainian presence as large as it is now, Poland is in danger of becoming a country of fractured identity and constant factional fighting along ethnic and cultural dividing lines, as is happening both in countries where historical minorities are numerous, and in countries of mass immigration adopting the model of multiculturalism.” The daily Rzeczpospolita, in a report from March 13 on criminality among immigrants residing in Poland, noted: “Last year, 12,437 foreigners (more than half were Ukrainian citizens) heard charges. In less than a month this year (through January 23) there have already been 1,648, indicating a growing trend.
Statistically, per day last year, charges were announced against 34 newcomers, this year it is already 71.” The report goes on to observe that drug offenses have seen the biggest doubling – from 993 in 2020 to 2100 last year. Their possession is the second (after driving while intoxicated) of the most common offenses committed by Ukrainians – half of all such acts involve them. This is obviously only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to other associated problems stemming from massive movement of peoples, spurred by the Western provoked the war in Ukraine. The fact that the hashtag #StopUkrainizationOfPoland was trending just w few months back is not a coincidence. When commercials on television are being run with Ukrainian subtitles, when the labor market is being flooded with cheap labor and Ukrainian/Russian is becoming the second unofficial language, heard literally everywhere, and the spokesperson of the Polish Foreign Ministry proudly claims that Polish state institutions are “servants of the Ukrainian people and their requests”, you know something is wrong.
Amid this unprecedented wave of foreigners flowing into what until recently was a tightly homogenous ethnically Poland, depletion of our military equipment, Russian nuclear weapons being currently stored in Belarus, soaring inflation, the elites in Warsaw, backed by the likes of Jake Sullivan, Anthony Blinken, Victoria Nuland and no doubt a whole slew of intelligence Deep State operatives – the same ones targeting Trump – are living out their dream of trying to stick it to Putin. But, as Trump has pointed out correctly, the enemy is within – in Washington, in Brussels, in Warsaw – not in Moscow.
The same entities and people, who have set a political target (hopefully only political!) on Donald Trump’s back, are the same ones manipulating the masses here and in the United States that Russia is the enemy of us all. Should Donald Trump win a second term he would take much of the wind out of the sails of the Eastern European coterie, that acts as the perfect excuse for the Deep State in Washington and military-industrial complex to justify their malign activities by saying to average Americans: see, they themselves feel threatened, we need to help them.
The Polish Government has no respect for the American taxpayer. There is no reason that men from Kansas should be risking their lives to bring about the fantasy of resurrecting a geopolitical entity from 700 years ago, this time aimed squarely at nuclear armed Russia, taking its cue from the cabal of warmongers on the Potomac.

So, if I’m reading this right, can globular clusters actually be OLDER than the galaxies around which centers they orbit?
Also, are the STARS in the globular clusters ALSO of the same great age? Or are some of them “recycled” and newer?
It seems to me like “globular clusters” may then just be ancient remnants of the early “plum pudding” universe, a kind of “gas” of globular clusters in space, with these plums later coming to orbit the bigger fruits and slices of fruits which developed in the matrix.
Does that makes any sense?
What are the actual current theories on the origin of globular clusters?
Did more standard galaxies form by condensation of globular clusters?

Keep in mind that the stars in a ‘cluster’ might not be close together. Some could be quite far away from ones that they appear to be close. Outer space is not a ceiling though it looks like one from here.
Oh, yes – I’m aware of that – and I’m sure that astronomers are good at isolating which stars are in which object – cluster, galaxy, background, or foreground. So I pretty well trust that the ages of stars in the clusters ARE in fact quite old, when they say that they are.
But I am wondering – is there stellar recycling within clusters? Are there newer stars, located within the cluster, that clearly formed AFTER the cluster formed?
Do stars expire?

What I gave her was an outline–well, that’s generous. I’ve told the full story a few times in “main” posts.
They do…and 1) how long they live and 2) how they die depends entirely on how massive the star is. A small star will live a long time…long enough that none of them have died yet because they last longer than the universe has been around…and most likely simply run out of fuel and eventually cool off. A big one may last only a few million years and blows itself to smithereens, leaving behind a neutron star or even a black hole, truly bizarre things.
Essentially, when they assign an age to a globular, they do it by assigning ages to the stars within the cluster. And I’ll be honest, I don’t really understand how they do that (I could take a wild-ass guess at the general outlines, but no one wants my wild-ass guess).
We had a nice tidy theory–well, actually a hypothesis–of galactic formation but JWST has called it into question. As far as I know galaxies are as old as globulars, but many of the stars in the galaxies are much newer than the galaxy itself is. Our sun being one example.
A globular cluster, in order to be composed of “old” stars, has to be packed full of red dwarfs. Other stars don’t get that old. (Our sun won’t last as long as these stars have already lasted.) My guess (one I am a lot more confident in) is that there were once shorter lived stars that have since died, but for whatever reason there isn’t any nebular gas for those old supernovas to have compressed and brought about newer stars, wheras in a full blown galaxy there’s plenty of gas and dust around in nebulas, within which stars are forming right now. For whatever reason globulars don’t have “new” stars in them, and what I just wrote is my guess. I suppose I could stand to do some research!
Did globulars coalesce into galaxies, way back when? I really don’t know the answer to that. I don’t know what the pre-JWST thinking was, or whether it was affected by the current realization that galaxies must have formed earlier than we thought they did.

We discover a new microbial threat, on average, every year. And that’s in addition to the hundreds of viruses, bacteria, and fungi we already know about that can cause disease in humans, become increasingly resistant to antimicrobials, and spread to new areas or in new ways.
Our world is increasingly interconnected. A new infectious disease threat can spread across the globe in just 36 hours. Climate change and human intrusions into previously untouched wilderness areas heighten the risk of animal diseases infecting and spreading among humans. Once a disease takes hold in a population, it’s extremely hard to eradicate. Only two diseases — smallpox in humans and rinderpest in cattle — have been eradicated.
Given these factors, another pandemic threat is inevitable and could emerge anytime from anywhere. That may sound scary, but there are steps countries and communities around the world can take to reduce this risk and stop outbreaks from escalating. This isn’t theoretical — epidemics can and have been prevented.
One key? Improving how fast we detect and respond to outbreaks. Countries are coalescing around a new, galvanizing global target of “7–1–7” — aiming for every suspected and actual outbreak to be detected within 7 days, reported within 1 day, and have all essential control measures in place within the next 7 days. This gives countries a tool to use to assess and improve their efforts. Concrete goals for public health programs have worked well before, such as the 90–90–90 target (now 95–95–95 for 2030) which drove down AIDS deaths.
In a new study for Lancet Global Health, Resolve to Save Live’s Prevent Epidemics team and global colleagues applied the 7–1–7 approach to understand outbreak detection and control in 41 public health events in Brazil, Ethiopia, Liberia, Nigeria, and Uganda between 2018 and 2022.
The results are promising.
Researchers found that delays in detection, notification, and response directly affected the outcome of public health events, highlighting the importance of early action to contain and stop disease spread to save lives.
Of the 41 public health events, only 11 (27%) met the complete 7–1–7 target. Figuring out what went right and what can be improved is illuminating.
The most frequently observed bottleneck to detection was low levels of clinical suspicion by health workers, followed by delays in laboratory confirmation. In terms of reporting, the detecting entity in seven events didn’t communicate to the relevant authority; technological challenges for electronic surveillance or reporting systems also caused delays. Common bottlenecks to response were lack of resources for rapid response initiation, delayed laboratory confirmation, and limited availability or access to mitigation measures such as medication, vaccines and personal protective equipment. Applying the 7–1–7 approach exposed these bottlenecks and now health authorities can focus on where to accelerate and advocate, and hold themselves accountable for reducing time to detect, report and control the next outbreak.
It was further discovered that approximately half of the public health events met each target (54% of events met the target for detection, 71% notification, 49% early response). This demonstrates that these targets are achievable; the 7–1–7 approach provides a framework for both evaluation and prioritization.
A strength of the 7–1–7 target is that it complements existing preparedness measures — such as the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Joint External Evaluation (JEE), International Health Regulations (IHR), and After Action Reviews — to help identify bottlenecks, shape advocacy efforts, hold stakeholders accountable, and accelerate progress. A companion commentary in the Lancet by WHO highlights the role that the 7–1–7 target can play within existing preparedness frameworks by establishing more agile systems, particularly on the front lines, where outbreaks are often first detected. 7–1–7’s ability to promote agility and accountability in global health security will be crucial when — not if — we face the next pandemic.
The 7–1–7 Alliance, a new country-driven initiative, will provide technical assistance, financial support, and a growing global community of practice to help countries achieve the 7–1–7 target and be better prepared for health threats.
Recent outbreaks of Ebola, Marburg virus, and mpox in places where they haven’t occurred before demonstrate the urgency of strengthening preparedness and response systems everywhere. The microbial world is full of unknowns. Microbes might outnumber us — but we can outsmart them.

I suppose this is the result of having a generation of adults who have now grown up in the “computer age” starting in the early 1980s who are now running the economy with their beliefs in AI and technology.

I have earned my living and built my career on this technology for over 25 years now, but that doesn’t seem to matter with this generation.
