DPat – back when I was in college I worked as a waitress at a fancy schmantzy restaurant during the summers – the era when before-dinner cocktails were all the rage and we had to learn the various glasses and garnishes in order to assist the busy bartenders with our drink orders.

It could be argued that that description helps to identify her, but it isn’t really necessary. A Georgia man is suing the makers of ChatGPT for defamation. In a new lawsuit filed in Gwinnett County, Georgia, Mark Walters alleges that OpenAI, the company behind the popular artificial intelligence (A.I.) chatbot ChatGPT, is guilty of publishing libelous information about him. The first-of-its-kind lawsuit brings up novel issues regarding A.I.’s liability for spreading misinformation.
The case stems from reporting that journalist Fred Riehl is doing about a Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) lawsuit against Bob Ferguson, Washington state’s attorney general. Alan Gottlieb is one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
Riehl linked to SAF’s complaint and asked ChatGPT to summarize. It allegedly responded that the complaint was “filed by Alan Gottlieb … against Mark Walters, who is accused of defrauding and embezzling funds from the SAF.” The ChatGPT summary continued by stating that Walters was the group’s treasurer and chief financial officer and that he had “misappropriated funds for personal expenses without authorization or reimbursement, manipulated financial records and bank statements to conceal his activities, and failed to provide accurate and timely financial reports and disclosures,” per Walters’ complaint.
ChatGPT was wrong across the board. Walters is neither a plaintiff nor a defendant in the lawsuit. He never served as SAF’s treasurer or chief financial officer. And he has not been legally accused of any crimes against SAF.
“ChatGPT’s allegations concerning Walters were false and malicious, expressed in
print, writing, pictures, or signs, tending to injure Walter’s reputation and exposing
him to public hatred, contempt, or ridicule,” states Walters’ complaint. “By sending the allegations to Riehl, OAI published libelous matter regarding Walters.”
Furthermore, Walters alleges that OpenAI is aware that ChatGPT “sometimes makes up facts” and therefore “knew or should have known its communication to Riehl regarding Walters was false, or recklessly disregarded the falsity of the communication.”
But there’s a difference between a company knowing that an artificial intelligence tool can make mistakes and a company knowing that the A.I. tool would make a specific mistake. OpenAI being aware that ChatGPT sometimes errs seems spurious grounds to claim that it knew or should have known ChatGPT would provide false information about Walters. And it seems even more dubious to allege that OpenAI acted with malicious intent here.
IMO it doesn’t matter whether there was malicious intent; human beings are ultimately responsible for what they publish (just as they are responsible when they get behind the wheel of a car, self-driving or not). Don’t “ask ChatGPT to summarize.” Do the work yourself. And if AI does write something, check it for accuracy. Am I missing something here? This seems too obvious.

Those laws were written by Asimov and the editor of Astounding, John W. Campbell. Asimov used them as the basis for a number of short stories that appeared in that magazine (which was the prestige outlet for science fiction at the time) and those stories were one of his two main “brands” in science fiction. This was all around the time of the second world war. His other Big Thing was the Foundation Trilogy.
Then he almost completely stopped writing science fiction, concentrating instead on writing about science. Decades later he came back and continued both the robots series and the Foundation series. I won’t spoil that, but Cuppa is right, some of the robots did indeed derive the zeroth law and used it to work for (what they saw as) the better interest of humanity even if at the cost of lives.
The movie I Robot was based on Asimov’s Robot series (one of the books collecting the short stories was titled I Robot. There wasn’t a story like the movie anywhere in the series…but there could have been, As such I consider it one of Hollywood’s rare, successful adaptations. And I Robot had a “zeroth law” plot.

For an incomplete week, the losses of the APU in all areas of the offensive amount to about one reinforced battalion per day — 800-1000 people + equipment. Thus, during the five days of the offensive, the Ukrainian troops lost about 4-5 thousand people killed and wounded, that is, an enhanced mechanized brigade.
So far, data on the preparation of three army corps as an offensive reserve has not been confirmed. Units and formations that have already taken part in the defense of certain sections of the front are rushing into the offensive. These reserves of the APU are not infinite, but it will take time for all of them to be ground in attacks. The effectiveness of the actions of artillery and aviation of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in this case is at an altitude: in one night flight, the Ka-52 combat helicopter destroys five to seven targets, including tanks and infantry fighting vehicles. However, even in such conditions, the intensity of the fighting remains high. In the coming days, the APU will intensify attacks.
How is the defensive line of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation arranged?
The Russian defensive structures, which we talked about earlier, are built along the dominant heights and ridges. The defensive line consists of dozens of lines, is echeloned to a depth of 25-30 km and is covered by a significant number of engineering barriers.

When Republican presidential candidates like Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump appear at the Moms for Liberty Summit in Philadelphia at the end of June, their hosts will be a hate group.
At least that’s the claim of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a far-left political organization that is drawing scorn for labeling Moms for Liberty and other parental rights organizations as “extremist group.” The SPLC even includes them on the same “hate map” as neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan.

In its report lumping parents protesting school board policies with the White supremacist militia movement, the SPLC made repeated partisan attacks against Republicans. Among their indicators that Moms for Liberty is an “extremist group” is its support for shutting down the federal Department of Education, a policy embraced by millions of Americans and multiple presidential candidates every four years.
The SPLC report included 523 “hate groups” in its latest map, which includes 230 chapters of Moms for Liberty, No Left Turn in Education and other parental rights organizations. In response, Moms for Liberty tweeted, “Last year, the Biden White House worked with the (National School Boards Association) to label Parents Domestic Terrorists. So, per AccuWeather, the air quality index in Raleigh-Durham is now at 113, “Unhealthy”, with very scores of particulate matter, meaning that anyone outside will have problems breathing. I can testify that the atmosphere is filled with a weird-looking haze. When I go outside to let the dog out or to bring him in, my eyes start to sting and hurt.

When we were returning from Northern Michigan last Saturday we were re-routed around Grayling for a forest/wildfire that was being actively fought. It was the first time anyone in my family had experienced that type of situation. There had been a haze over Otsego Lak- that we’d noticed earlier & the Christian radio that blankets much of Michigan kept mentioning the Canadian fires being responsible for the smoke.
At the time of our travels the fire was burning roughly 1000 acres but it got up to about 8000 acres later that day. We never did hear how big the area impacted ended up being but apparently the situation has been fully contained now.
During that drive we noticed the sun appearing an unnatural orange color & looking like sunset reflecting off the waters of various lakes hours before sunset was to happen. Also the nearly full moon was almost entirely obscured & appeared as a Very Faint orange orb & was visible as such even in Metro Detroit. Doubtful that the Grayling area (1 1/2 hours South of the Tip O’ the Mitt) fires were responsible for that level of statewide coverage of smoke.
Oh when we were driving the I-75 detour around the Grayling area (there were Many cops directing traffic flow & reportedly evacuating some people in the area too) there was a time, near the Camp Grayling area (national guard, iirc), where we could actually smell smoke, but only for a couple of miles on that roughly 250 mile trip…
We could mostly only notice the haze/smoke by looking at things in the distance for the sky Appeared clear, even with the orange sun & moon. According to my husband he has still been able to notice smoke/haze by looking in the distance as he drives his daily route. He’s also been experiencing some eye & breathing passages irritations of late…
The fire was started when a property owner on Stanley Lake in Crawford county had a campfire get out of control. Might have been unattended?
By the way, I’ve been having internet service connection problems for most of the last two days.

The Colorado Springs got a double whammy a couple of years ago–Waldo Canyon in late June one year, then the Black Forest fire early June the year after that. Each was the worst fire (in terms of peoples’ homes destroyed) in Colorado up to that point. Total of about a thousand.
In both cases the sky was orange and the sun was an orb it didn’t hurt to look at (though who knows how much UV was getting through). In both cases it was very hot before the fires and the smoke plume actually gave me some afternoon shade, but I would a zillion times rather have done without.
The Tujunga Canyon Fire in SoCal back in 1975 was the same thing. Two or three days of gray and ashes everywhere, and the sun a sad ball of orange diffused and defused from its normal brilliance.
My copper-colored (barf) Ford Mustang II (barf barf) was an ashen grey for the worst part of a week until I could get it washed… Pretty much every car in the ‘SC parking structure was grey and sooty… University of Sooty California…
(Good thing (for cars) that it didn’t rain then. For the firefighters it would have been really helpful, as there were other fires going on at the same time.
How soon people forget. Newscum, et. al. act like the fires of the last few years are the first that ever happened….

Stretched Pinto, with many of the same problems… have to say, I drove the “P” out of it, from Silly Valley to LA every third week or so, and at the breaks, fully loaded over the grapevine…

My niece committed suicide this week.
She was only 14.
She was targeted by a pedophile ring on TikTok, and and groomed. Sent them pics etc.
Her mom found out when Homeland security showed up at the door a couple of months ago. (They didn’t tell the rest of the family)
The guilt and shame along with an already anxious mind was too much.
She was receiving therapy, and they did not think she was suicidal.
There was no warning, and no note. but her mom found her hanging by her light fixture on Monday afternoon.
If you give your kids free access to social media YOU DO NOT KNOW WHO THEY ARE TALKING TO.
It’s not out in the open. It’s hidden in DM’s.
They disguise themselves as other kids. They are insidious, and good at infiltrating “protected” group chats.
Get your kids off of Tik Tok and Instagram.
Do not let your daughters (or sons) post provocative photos because everyone else is doing it.
The threat is real. And according to the govt. agents who took my nieces statement far more common then anyone wants to admit, and it’s a GROWING problem.

The following comment is not an indictment of anyone, and especially not the people referenced there.
I have never understood taking provocative photos, let alone posting them for others to see. In my background, such a thing would have been unheard of. I think that in most of human history, it would have been unheard of unless you were a sex worker or soliciting or something. (And I do realize that photos were not possible until about the last century. There were alternatives, such as artwork.) It should not be “normalized” for teens to do this. It is another failure of society.

As Tucker said in his video from yesterday, we need to embrace taboos. If we had a strong sense that certain things are a definite no, no questions asked, then more people would automatically resist this kind of grooming. But that is no longer the case. And the bad guys have gone viral with it.
Even back in the days of film cameras…most people had a lab do them, and of course the workers at the lab would see “it.” (your junk, be it an inny or an outie type.) So it really couldn’t become a thing until digital, when people take pictures and almost never get them printed. Now Job Lowe can take a picture of his private parts and ship them off to Suzie Crotchrot and only the two of them will ever see it, unless of course one of them leaks it.
The names, blech! 😂 Yes, it’s much easier in the digital age, with the assumption of privacy. But I always think that anything sent over wifi or on a phone has the potential of being seen. There are possibilities for sabotage by a close “friend” or associate who gets hold of the phone or computer where things are backed up. And even the intended recipient can sour on the relationship and exact all kinds of revenge later.

Why, oh why is it so hard for folks to understand that once you let a message, picture, song, whatever, wend its way onto the world-wide wait, erm, web, that it will remain out there (probably) forever, and that the people you least want to see it will be the ones who DO see it.
Back in the day, HP had a whole DEPARTMENT tasked with looking people up on social media, job sites, resume services, etc., etc., etc. And if your profile or resume showed stuff that was untoward, or your interview didn’t match what the other stuff showed, it was curtains for any callbacks…
Sad side effect of digital photography is that many, MANY photos will go unprinted, unsaved, undocumented, and forgotten, with no negatives to at least leave a trail of some sort… and eventual bit rot won’t help either…
With jpegs, one bit flip can render the whole file a complete mess.

The Joe Biden in the video clip today from North Carolina is exhibiting, IMO (speaking as a person who has taken care of numerous frail, ill elderly people), some troubling issues: Gait and standing look unsteady (it looks like the knees were giving way at 0:03 – 0:06, then he righted himself); what appears to be attention-span problems; arms held when walking in a “ready” stance (to potentially break a fall); skin color pasty — what’s up with the color of the right side of the face at 0:17 (unless the lighting was doing this)?
I’m not familiar with the clip of him on the golf course that you reference, but if it was a situation where only those “in the know” were close enough to know the difference, then I would not discount it. Alternatively, maybe he has episodes of being better at times due to medication. But I can’t imagine a man in the condition we see here, ever being able to play golf. He is debilitated.
The “Joe Biden at the golf course” clip shows a man of ** about ** the same height and physical looks as the real one, but the video was made from a distance (apparently nobody was allowed up close.) In addition, that “Joe Biden” had a golf cap on and sunglasses. But even at a distance, that “Joe Biden” exhibited a more “filled-out” build, in contrast to the Biden at North Carolina today.

It has been reported that Colonel Yuriy Bak, the Commander of the Ukraine National Guard has been liquidated in the Donbass. There has been no announcement naming new Commanders coming from Zelensky’s office. There has been no announcement by the Russians that these three men have been terminated. But….Budanov, a prolific tweeter, hasn’t tweeted, Zaluzhny, who was seen almost everywhere in photos & videos of meetings, is no longer present.
Supposedly Zelensky visited the unflooded portion of Kherson today. A video was put out of Zelensky surrounded by military personnel walking the dry street. (Satellite photos and video as of 6 pm MDT last night indicate the flood waters in Kherson were up to the trolly car wires)
For at least the last four days, planes from various countries have arrived in Rzeszow, Poland carrying newly trained troops. The troops are air flighted into Ukraine from Poland. Rzeszow is also the western gateway for the entry of munitions into Ukraine.
