Is the store that you’ve written about before? If so which locations/themes were most appealing to you?
There was a local store in my hometown called Adray Appliance. Every Summer my brothers would play on some Little League teams sponsored by Adrays. I think both my brothers ended up having T-shirts & ball caps in practically every color of the rainbow representing the many Adray teams they played on. I think Adrays actually outfitted All the Little League teams in town. It was sad to see them close for they had been a backbone echo in almost everyone’s youth where I grew up.
Fry’s was one of the institutions that made Silicon Valley great. If you’re a grocer, and you buy a truckload of tomatoes and have six cases left over two weeks later, whose fault is it that they’ve all gone bad? That’s what Fry’s did for disk drives, or motherboards, or processors.
I started shopping there in the original Sunnyvale store — that’s the one with no theming that is briefly in the video. It moved across Lawrence Expressway into a building they decorated like a giant chip — the interior floors were like a printed circuit board, green with yellow traces and giant electronic components sticking out of the floor……not shown in the video. The third Sunnyvale store was the one with green waves emitting from the Fry’s logo — the interior design paid homage to Silicon Valley innovations.
San Jose had the Mayan pyramid; Palo Alto had the Wild West theme (I think the ones with mine cars, but not the one with the locomotive hanging off the facade). Campbell had Egyptian pyramids (not shown). Fremont went through three versions — one plain, the next one space, the final one was the Paris World’s Fair.
Alice in Wonderland was somewhere in SoCal, and I never got to see it 🙁 .
The fundamental thing that killed the chain, IMHO, is not what they say. It’s that they had big stores but value got tiny. They used to have extensive DVD collections in the stores — but now people buy a Roku and stream. They used to have shelves of software — but now people have activation cards and documentation is online. They tried to fill the empty spaces by selling dishwashers and refrigerators, but those don’t fit the technology model. As technology was shrinking, they should have sublet space — but, instead, filled it with more and more junk.
Even so, it was a very sad day when they threw in the towel and folded.
The passing of an era…
This is Fry’s Sunnyvale — it shows the exterior (and relative location) of versions 1 and 2. Unfortunately, by the time it gets inside, it only shows how the store looked when it was 80% empty. It used to be such a delight when it was full.
Before Fry’s moved to its third location, the building was there but was vacant — and the parking lot was infested with bunnies. I used to drive over and visit with them.

I remember going in there just to look (while visiting family on vacation), walking out, and seeing the newspaper stands with the Merc, Chron, etc. and the news that Steve Jobs was retiring… talk about the end of an era…
At one point, the San Jose Mercury News held the record for the most pages in a newspaper. The Sunday editions were about five inches thick. Two thirds of that was classified ads.
I used to deliver the SF Chronicle in the early 1960s and I grew my route to 52 customers. Sundays were particularly hard with all the inserts, and probably pushed 600 pages or more, counting them. I had to have a double set of bags for the papers, and it all but killed me, especially folding and stuffing on Saturday nights… at least I got decent tips at the end of the month (e.g. “Plant your corn early” or “Don’t stare at the sun” 😆 )….
IIRC the job ads were in the Saturday Merc… which was abnormally thick for a Saturday edition…
That was a Huge Store. It’s too bad they couldn’t find a way to adapt to the changing times better & stay afloat.
Happened to K&M Computer over here… great electronics and gear store, but they didn’t jump onto the laptop bandwagon soon enough… so they had their lunch eaten by Arlt and other retailers, and their assets bought by Bora computers… from almost fifty stores down to two or three in a matter of a couple of years (2008 bust did it to them, methinks).
Sometimes manglement ruins even the best companies/ideas… other times the derp state installs people like Carly Fiorina and Meg “Nit” Whitman to drive companies into the ground…

When I lived in Mountain View (Moffet AFB housing, housing is gone now too) I went there at least twice. It was like an adult toy store.
I used to work up there off of Old Middlefield. We used to stand up on the roof and watch the practice runs before Fleet Week… amazing how Mountain View has changed… Upstart Crow, Old Mill, Mayfield Mall — HP– now housing, probably Colonel Lee’s Mongolian BBQ is still there, maybe Armadillo Willy’s 🙂

I used to go to Frys to get various components, etc., and the incredible JOLT Cola, but was always put of by the Gestapo security guards they had between the checkstands and the doors… They were interesting (and all different in their ways) and helpful when it was really late and no where else was open… I also liked Curtis Trading Company, Alltronics, Weird Stuff, and some other surplus places (like the ones by the Oakland airport with military surplus parts, IIRC off of Davis Street)…
Ahh, those were the days… also the old company campuses, like where ROLM used to be, by Patrick Henry Drive and Old Ironsides… and Nicolino’s restaurant, before it went downhill…
The times changed or the stores changed — from discrete electronic parts (resistors, transistors, capacitors, integrated circuits, ferrite cores, magnet wire, cables and wires in general; D-sub connector, coaxial connectors, power supplies, transformers and on and on) to PC parts, washing machines, all the original-manufacturers’ tubes of 20 or 50 ICs disappeared, and there were only the one-off NTE-branded blister-packed parts intended for replacements left.
The decline was evident for years, with sparse shelves like the ones shown in the video. During the last few years, I found ever less useful or interesting parts. Not just some long-timer ennui, but sometimes they would not even have the component I was looking for. Still decent selections of some network cables and shrink-tubing, that was about it.
It might have been an effect of the changeover from through-hole parts (with pins that go through holes in the circuit boards) to surface-mount parts. The latter are generally smaller and less expensive to mass-produce. But none of that ever made it onto Fry’s shelves.
Oh, for the days of Qument Electronics…
Yes, that is another of the late and great. Excellent selection of boxes and Cinch-Jones connectors, from what I remember. There were several stores with interesting electronics along Bascom Avenue in the 1980s — JDR Microdevices was another one.
When I first moved up here, I lived right around the corner from Quement, near Bascom and Fruitdale.
