I have an update on Kal and Bren, but it is not good news. Bren was removed from the ventilator yesterday afternoon honoring her wishes, and she passed away 20 minutes later. They were such a solid couple it is painful to think of Kal without Bren. I’m praying for comfort and strength for him.
We’ll pray for Kal. He’ll be okay as long as there are friends around.

Back a ways, some may recall that I got a Dell/Wyse 5070 miniature (about 8″x8″x1.25″) computer some time ago. It’s intended to be installed at point-of-sale terminals or in fast-food restaurant kitchens, so it resisted being modified. Nevertheless, on about May 9th, I managed to get into it and install Ubuntu, at which point I logged a victory and set it aside.
The reason that I was interested in such a device is a little complicated.
When I started getting involved with Raspberry Pi computers, I quickly realized that they could be used as building blocks within a home environment. This meshed well with “The Network Is The Computer” [ https://blog.cloudflare.com/john-gage/ ], which was, for years, the motto of Sun Microsystems. As an example, there is a project called “pi-hole” [ https://pi-hole.net/ ] which uses the machinery of the internet to “disappear” ads and malware, using a blacklist. It runs fine on a Raspberry Pi and can protect everything connected to it. This also fits well within the UNIX workflow — have discrete pieces that do something well, then chain them together to do amazing stuff.
One of the building blocks that I worked on was a print server. The thing is, my home network is used by the Fiancee and myself…..and her internet security hygiene is horrible, to the point that I’ve bifurcated our home network. She runs her iPad, Roku, desktop, and Kindle on one half — and never updates her software — while I run my stuff on the other half and update everything all the time. So the challenge for this print server was to have it log onto each network and show itself as available…..with two different security protocols…..and then drive one set of multiple printers. I got it to work (try THAT in Windows!) by modifying internal Linux routing tables, and logged it as a victory and set it aside.
During the printserver project, I encountered one thing that the Pi did not do well — the total current drain on its USB ports was extremely limited. I have a USB mouse that uses so much current that it makes the system unreliable (it now has “not for pi” written on it in Sharpie). This meant that using a powered USB hub for the printers was advisable — even though the hub cost almost half what the Pi cost in the first place.
Further, maintenance became an issue. A credit-card-sized computer stuffed in behind printers, with stacks of paper and print cartridges in the same area, with no nearby desk, made it infeasible to update the software for the Pi-printserver and rejigger its configuration.
In addition, it would be handy to hang some other items off the printserver — storage comes to mind — which might require faster access than older USB connections.
The 5070 unit has 2 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.1 on the front panel, along with 4 USB 3.1 on the back panel — all of which are powered by a nice power supply brick that plugs into the wall. All I had to do was get it to run Linux and get it to respond to commands over the network…..
Until around July, when I plugged the 5070 in and tried to update it and broke it.
I had loaded it with full Ubuntu, including LibreOffice, Games, Thunderbird, and other stuff. When it did an upgrade, it loaded a new copy onto its limited storage (in case the upgrade went bad) and ran out of room. That’s when I learned about “apt clean”, which removes all the spare copies of installed packages.
Anyway, I saw another computer over at Woot for about $85 a few weeks back, and I was going for another try on the Printserver….and I had my “broken” 5070 (now fixed), and I had the monitor that died in the middle of the night, whose replacement is working fine…..and I’ve been as happy as a pig in slop all evening wrestling with everything.
If I’m lucky, I’ll get them all to talk to SSH tomorrow.
My tired eyes read that last sentence as

I would suppose that the real argument is whether voting or owning a gun is an inalienable right which means it is bestowed by God and not the government. The Bill of Rights delineates the rights with respect to the government whereas the Declaration of Independence speaks of rights granted by God which are summarized by life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I am not appropriately informed or trained to consider the details of such a debate. I guess since election qualifications and attendant citizen rights and privileges are state issues it can get involved.

When they came we agreed and therefore no extra pay. People who decide now have to pay. Same with converting our Internet and Phone service. We now off cooper wire and we did not have to pay extra but people in the future who rejected the conversion have to pay. They guy spend half a day here was a joy for my husband.

And with most of the country using VOIP telephony over the internet (having replaced the old land lines), then the power goes out, that does too. Of course cellphones will still have power until their batteries run out, but what about the cell towers….
