I have experienced what I think they are describing in the video, many times, starting around 2019 (I think).

For about a month maybe, I was hearing the ‘hum’ once or twice a week, always late at night. It’s almost subsonic, like the sound a subwoofer might make in a quiet room, with no music playing, but if you put your ear up to the woofer, and there is a little feedback, you might hear a low level hum.

This is sort of like that, only louder. Not loud like a refrigerator might sound when the compressor kicks on, but loud enough to make me look up from the computer screen and try to figure out what the noise is.

It’s more than just a noise though, it’s like a pressure wave. Like the lowest octaves of a giant pipe organ. I’m pretty sure you don’t really hear very much down around 20Hz or 30Hz, but you feel the sound pressure. This is like that, but it’s concentrated in your head, or your inner ear. You don’t feel it in your chest for example, like you would with the deepest notes from a church organ. There is nothing actually vibrating (desk, floor, etc.), so far as I can tell.

FWIW, I have sensitive hearing, and I live in a very low noise environment. Unless I’m listening to music (which I like to hear loud!), I like my surroundings to be very quiet. I regularly hear the kinds of various noises that all old houses make. A couple years ago, I noticed a sound in the kitchen when I was making dinner. Barely perceptible, but it was like something you notice because it shouldn’t be there, it’s not part of the sound field you are accustomed to. Like suddenly hearing something on a song that you are very familiar with, and never noticed before, so it stands out.

I turned everything off and listened. It was a light, steady tapping sound. About one tap per second, like a metronome. A very soft metronome.

I guessed it could be a leaking pipe, and looked in the cabinet under the sink, but everything was dry. I went down in the basement, over to where the pipes to the kitchen sink were located, in a crawl space. I shined a flashlight in there, and one of the copper pipes was slowly leaking onto an old folded plastic tarp on the floor, about 3 feet below the pipe. So there’s nothing wrong with my hearing.

So back to the strange humming sound. It might last for up to 10 minutes or so at a time. As the video mentions, it can be slightly disorienting. The video says for some people it can be nausea inducing, and I think I know what he meant. I didn’t experience nausea like I was going to throw up, but it definitely begins to feel like you are being overwhelmed by something.

Sometimes it’s worse than others, sometimes there is a noticeable feeling of anxiety, and I don’t normally get anxious about anything.

After about ten minutes, it’s enough to make me start to get angry. It’s frustrating. It’s intense. Like it’s resonating inside your head. Like an audible version of Chinese water torture. You just want it to stop. It usually happens while I’m at the computer, reading or watching something on youtube, since that’s what I’m usually doing in the late evening. It’s hard to focus or concentrate when the ‘hum’ starts.

It’s not coming from the computer, or the speakers, or the monitors — the monitors do have a very slight hum if I put my ear up to them, but it’s definitely not the source of the ‘hum’ I’m talking about.

I tried to isolate the sound, but that’s hard to do with a very low frequency hum that sounds like it’s coming from everywhere at once. When I went outside to see if a truck might be idling nearby, I could no longer hear it.

Back inside, I could hear it again. I walked through the house, and I could hear it everywhere. Then it would just stop. I might hear it again in the next couple of days, or not again for a few months.

It’s not the furnace, or the air conditioner, or the refrigerator, or any other appliance.

I haven’t experienced it for a while now, maybe not for a year or more. I would guess that I experienced it at least 20 times or so, over a period of 3 or 4 years.

The video above is the first time I have heard of anyone else experiencing a similar phenomenon.
