I can only imagine & that path is so unique to each person who has walked it. Our longtime neighbor by my parents’ Northern Michigan Cottage is a Vietnam Combat Vet but I would have never known it but for a passing comment of his once. He seems very nonchalant about his war experiences, almost taking it all in stride. He really didn’t even like us thanking him for his service, in a very humble way, not hostile. How All of you in service were theoretically willing to lay your lives down for others is truly inspiring & worthy of honor! TYSVM

i was working as a bellman at a hotel near harvard square around 1989 and i escorted charles durning to his room. i met a busload of movie stars there, many coming to meet with david mamet ( the untouchables ) for projects. i am not certain that is why durning was there. so, he’s a real regular guy and he finds out i’m an irish catholic kid. he tells me the dirtiest priest and nun jokes i’ve ever heard and this goes on for a half an hour. i’m cryin’ from laughing, but he won’t let me go. already i loved the guy just from meeting him, but i didn’t know of his military service at all. if only i had ! i am a pretty good amateur historian of weimar germany, the nazis, the holocaust, and WW II. i could have talked to him for days, but i didn’t know, and also he might not have wished to do so. there was a sadness that followed charles durning that even i could sense. later i learned about his life and i began to understand the melancholy man who made me laugh so i would stay with him. i wish most i could have told him that he was loved for his humanity, as well as his courage and dedication. he was a fine actor, with big parts in personal favorites ” the sting ” and ” tootsie “, but i think i appreciated him most for the appearances on the PBS memorial day programs from washington. he would read and dramatize letters from actual soldiers to home and i would be crying like a baby every time. when he died, i was as sad as if a family member died. ( i was also fortunate enough to spend an afternoon with a WW I doughboy, who showed me all of his pictures and stories as i was working as a census taker. also, i talked at length with a congressional medal of honor winner from WW II, just me and him. i had the honor of shaking the good hand of bob dole, too. i was in awe of all of these guys because i know it is a fair bet that i could never do what they did under hellish pressure and danger. ) BTW, this is a very well done video. you have done your homework and it shows to a now old fart who knows his history.

When I was not an citizen the same in MO and OH when I applied for my driver license I was ask if I am a citizen? Non citizen was marked.
I had to bring my citizen papers when I became a citizen in order to have listed on my driver license that I am a citizen. The process is not easy one has to bring proof of citizenship . What I am saying there are two different marks on driver license Citizen and non Citizen. In OH every river license is checked before one can vote and run through a thingy to verify that one is a citizen and registered.

There’s more to it than just what is happening downtown. Specifically on the north side which is largely deserted. the housing – what’s left of it – is small and aging badly. There are some pockets that are pristine, and there are efforts to bring back various neighborhoods from the messes that they are (usually by the gay community), but none are actually downtown. Downtown dwellers are in lofts, for the most part. Lack of residents adds to all of it.
The big problem downtown is the number of businesses, including one huge law firm, moving out to the county. Even the one five star restaurant we have here moved to the county seat. In that case, the owner died, and his son didn’t want to be in that location anymore. Other family owned businesses are not moving out, like Crown Candy, which is an old fashioned soda shop (the Reuben is to die for). The AT&T building is empty because Southwestern Bell moved to Texas thanks to a tax incentive…or Ed Whitacre not getting into the country club of choice. I’ve heard both stories. Losing the department stores didn’t help, either. I mean, once the May Company was bought out, Macy’s kept getting smaller and smaller and the selection was not great at all. It was REALLY convenient, though, to walk across the street from the building where I was working at multiple times, and go shopping at lunch. The May Company offices are actually now used by an IT industry incubator. Another building on Tucker was bought by Saint Louis University to house their law school.
Crime, yes, is a problem, but it’s a problem in more places than just downtown. Of course, if people – specifically, visitors – would use some common sense and not leave things visible in their cars, a lot of that would not be as bad.
So, it’s not all bad. Frankly, it wasn’t a halcyon under Republican leadership, either. The decline that led to the housing projects was during that time period.

For all that we remember the Pony Express, it was only in operation for 18 months in 1860 and 1861. It was rendered obsolete by the transcontinental telegraph in October of 1861.
And yes it was $5 a pop. More than today even without adjusting for inflation; $5 was several days’ pay.
Riders were paid $125/month in a day when skilled labor would typically pay $2/day.

Other University found out open enrollment does not work either.They are reversed here in Town also and Standardized Testing is back. The kids did not know English and spent sometimes 2 years in remedial English classes. They also did not know how to write papers or do Algebra and calculus and that in engineering technology courses or plastic.
I do feel sorry for kids who now have lots of loans to pay back and cannot get good jobs to pay them back. They would have been better in trade schools.

Came to wanting to find something out, put a search term in the top bar and got the message “fire fox can’t connect to the yandex server”
Tried again same thing happened.
Tried a bookmarked site and it worked.
Double check, tried a search from the top bar again, same answer can’t do it.
Remembered I had yandex’s own page bookmarked somewhere, it has a search bar in the middle of its page.
Found it, tried it and it worked, things went back to normal after that.

they’re doing it very sneakily. It’s not specifically mentioned in the bill but by redefining what a home school is, it would put everyone in violation:
“The bill moves the definition of “home school” as a “school” to apply to all statutes, which technically makes it illegal to possess a firearm in a home school based on existing laws that prohibit firearms in schools.”
Look, there is no way to “out gotcha” tyranny. They have tens of thousands of highly paid zealot lawyers who spend all day dreaming up a thousand different ways to kill you, using death by a thousand cuts.
