Thus, to the Italians, “beyond the Alps” could be France or Germany. For Germany, it could mean Italy or France. For France, it might mean Germany or Italy. For any combination of the above, Austria or Lichtenstein may be substituted for Germany.
Given the definition of “ultramontane” as being south of the Alps, it seems likely that the word originated north of the Alps. My guess would be France.

Speaking of Storm watch – I feel like we have been in perpetual storm watch mode since Midsummer. The Village where daughter Sally lives has been hit 3 times since August 2023.
I’m home for a couple of nights, for a dentist appt tomorrow morning. Need to get mail, pick up groceries, do laundry, etc. No yard work this time.
Will go back Tuesday afternoon or early Wednesday morning and stay with Sally through the time Milton passes through FL until next Sunday evening.
Looks like the Village and Suwannee County may not have high winds and and power outage this time….but want to be prepared just in case it takes a turn more northward.
Several of the staff and residents at the Village have relatives in the storm’s path, so we will be praying for them.
The current predictions are that Milton will diminish and not hit Tampa as a Major Hurricane. That is a real mercy!

At 8:20AM today, the power went put at Chez Yours Truly. Came back on a minute later— but the lights were either dim or flickering. Managed to make toast for breakfast, did some things on the computer, but the situation was getting worse. Called Duke Energy. They sent out a tech to assess.
Tech made the assessment. Called his office. They sent out an entire crew with 2 trucks (one a bucket truck) to deal with the situation.
THE POWER WENT OUT FROM MY HOUSE TO THE POWER POLE AT THE REAR OF THE PROPERTY. MY HOUSE IS THE ONLY ONE ON THE STREET TO BE AFFECTED. MY BACK YARD HAS TO BE DUG UP FOR A NEW LINE TO BE INSTALLLED.
Since there’s no power, the internet on my computer is also out. I’m using my cellphone with whatever free access internet is available.
I don’t know how long the power will be out. I told my Yorkie that we’ll be “camping in the house for awhile.”

The power is back on here at Chez Yours Truly. The crew didn’t have to dig up the entire backyard to run the new electric line, thank God.
The crew showed me the section of the old line that was the “epicenter” of the problem. There was a largish piece that was corroded and looked like it had been literally chewed through. Since the line runs underground from the house to the pole, I’m wondering if some underground-dwelling animal (mole?) chewed on the old line. The corrosion appeared to have accumulated over time, so I’m guessing that the damage to the old line happened some time ago.
And, since it’s the power company’s line, I won’t get a bill for the work.
There were three electrical contractor trucks here today, one of which was a bucket truck.
I’m glad to have a battery-operated table lamp, a battery-operated radio, and a battery-operated small table fan — all of these were put into use today while the power was out (5 hours.)

If there’s a “silver lining” to today, it’s the realization that having preps ready to use is really important.
That’s how I felt. All that power brought to my door step in a rather reasonable amount of time to get me fixed. Except in my case it was just two trucks. You got three! 😁

I’m not sure what he means by “nothing right.” Two huge hurricanes in a row are going to cause flooding and storm surge. I do understand people’s suspicions, but I object to stating them as fact until we know they are fact. It’s what the “climate change” people do. If they’re not already saying it, no doubt they will attribute these two hurricanes to global warming, also without evidence. They are suspicious, so therefore it must be. I hate to see our side going down that road as well. I’d like to see people researching in depth — not about patents that people got that don’t work, because people have been trying to find ways to change or control the weather for decades — but about how it is actually done.
Things I wonder about:
I’d like to know, if Hurricane Milton has been cloud-seeded or influenced in some way, when, according to the scientific methods, that would have had to take place, and where. How long before it starts heading toward landfall does that have to be done? With the high-category hurricanes, I’m guessing it would be way too risky to fly into or close to the clouds. (I know nothing about it. Is there something they can catapult into the clouds?) Is the idea that cloud-seeding is what causes the hurricane to head in the direction it does and to strengthen dramatically? If so, when would that cloud-seeding have taken place? Does the effect last over the period of days that it takes the hurricane to make landfall, or cause that kind of strengthening? Etc.
Thank you for continuing to apply skepticism! Even as I now see ways weather might be modified, I realize that we must try to DISPROVE every possibility!
