Advice and information from readers regarding items from Western medicine, Homeopathy, Naturopathic Medicine, Herbal medicines, Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, folk and traditional medicine, “Let thy food be thy medicine” recipes, personal experiences, “these are what I take on a daily basis”, books and articles, and the like — all are welcome. To start the exchange rolling, Yours Truly provides the following:
“My Aunt Mary’s Daily Tonic“
Ingredients: 1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar; 1 Tablespoon honey; 2 teaspoons lemon juice; a sprinkle of cinnamon; 1/3 cup very hot (not boiling) water.
Method: Muddle the apple cider vinegar, the honey, the lemon juice, and the cinnamon in a glass. Add the very hot water and stir gently. Drink as soon as it cools down just a little. (Please don’t “quaff” the mixture — take it in sips. I think cider vinegar tonic is tough to take all at once!)
My late Aunt Mary drank this tonic for decades. She believed that it “cleaned the intestines.” Well, it must have been beneficial for her — she lived to be 96 years old. I will say that I change the amounts of the first three ingredients when I prepare the mixture to: 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar; 2 teaspoons honey; 1 teaspoon lemon juice (the cinnamon amount and the water amount remain the same.) I suspect that this tonic is / was, probably used by many other people, and is known by various names. My Aunt Mary also used a fabulous, easy recipe for baked salmon and peas (her mother was from County Mayo), which I remember eating but I don’t have the recipe. She firmly believed that eating salmon could cure or prevent many diseases.

It’s funny that you mention “emergency formula” from Dr. Spock. There are so many things that people have forgotten how to do.
One that comes to mind is ORT, for which some back information is necessary. I happened upon it when hearing of some backwater where cholera killed hundreds of people……except…..cholera actually doesn’t kill people — it causes dehydration, which kills people. So long as you can maintain hydration while your body’s immune system rallies around and eliminates the pathogen, it’s survivable.
Which leads to Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) [ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_rehydration_therapy ]. It contains salt, sugar, potassium salt, and sodium citrate, and may be available in premixed packets.
Looks similar to Gatorade. I’ve seen recipes for a homemade version.

Yes, I think ORT is very close to the original Gatorade product (which I believe was water + lemon juice + sugar + some salt?)
There are important differences, but Gatorade (even modern) is better than ignoring dehydration.
That’s no joke. I’ve been hospitalized twice in my life for flu, and both times it was because I was dehydrated. I needed I.V. fluids, because I couldn’t keep anything down.
I get Hubby to take Gatorade or Powerade on high temp work days to reduce his heat exhaustion/stroke tendencies & it really seems to help.
At one point I saw a paper talking about rice water. You boil rice in a lot of water until you have a liquid, then cool. Rice will literally grab the bacteria and move it out of your system.
The paper of course has since been memory holed…

Those pardoned lose their 5th Amendment right as regards to the [federal] crimes they were pardoned for. If they are in court for charges/lawsuits in regards to civil or state laws, do they still have to fess up to the FEDERAL CRIMES they committed?
My understanding (probably less than pgroup’s) is that it has to do with the 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination (“taking the 5th”).
If you are hauled into a position to testify (or be deposed), and you would ordinarily want to say “I decline to respond in accordance with the Fifth Amendment”, then this assertion can be challenged because you can no longer be incriminated by reciting the facts regarding the crimes for which you were pardoned.
This is, of course, tap-dancing in a minefield — and you’d better have a skilled attorney right there (preferably well-caffeinated).
They must testify truthfully, about facts they know personally, if asked.
So the answer is generally yes. Here’s a caveat – challenges can be made to the questions asked. Questions that seek to have the witness speculate, make legal conclusions, etc. are a no-no.
And of course the line of questioning must be relevant to the subject matter of the proceeding and cannot be framed in such a way as to embarrass the witness or to prejudice the tribunal/judge.

My mom, who is 93, once told me that my grandmother used cod liver oil and castor oil as remedies. If they had a cold or flu, it was cod liver oil. I have no idea if it works. Castor oil packs were for aches and pains. And lo and behold, a lot of people in my cancer group use castor oil packs for detox and pain. I’ve noticed that Amazon even has special wraps they sell for castor oil packs:

When my late husband was a child, he caught pneumonia (he was born in 1910.) His mother wrapped his chest in cotton wadding that had been “greased” with Musterole. Took care of the situation.
Addedum: The issue with using cotton wool “greased” with Musterole is that you had to put another layer of padding underneath the “Musterole layer” to keep the preparation away from the body of the patient. This is because Musterole, if it was right on the skin or one “layer” away from it for even a short time, could actually burn the skin. Musterole used to be available from some vendors in India. However, I don’t think it’s available anywhere at all now.

Don’t know if this will show. Had some difficulties awhile back logging in and haven’t had the peace of mind since to figure out what the problem is. Last time I posted was Christmas 22 and it has been a crazy 2 years since.
Anyway, my german MIL used a lard plaster…..similar to what you describe but with a cloth warmed in a bit of lard in the stove, placed on the chest, covered with another cloth to prevent grease spots on clothing and then wrapped in a wool scarf. Works
wonders. Oil will do the job, too.
Another method I used on my daughter, who had frequent bouts of “bronchitis” before being diagnosed with asthma, was a mustard plaster. I soaked ground mustard seed in hot water for a few minutes, dipped in a cloth and wrung it out, placed it on her chest and covered it as for the lard plaster. I don’t remember the exact amount…maybe a tablespoon in a large bowl of water. Check to make sure the skin is only turning rosy, not blistering. Works very well.

Let me explain the debt ceiling to you since it’s pretty clear most of you have no idea what is going on.
As of now, there is no debt ceiling.
Let me repeat that for all of those “true conservative” supporters. As of right now, there is no debt ceiling.
The debt ceiling was suspended back in Jun of 2023.
As things stand now, as of Jan 1st, 2025, the debt ceiling will return, and it will be whatever it was when it was suspended plus whatever spending Biden and the dems did since June of 2023. That new debt ceiling is estimated to be hit by June of 2025 if not earlier.
What the CR wanted to do is push the redemption of the debt ceiling back for 2 years.
This would allow massive tax cuts that Trump wants to make. Things like no tax on tips, no tax on social security, no tax on overtime, a 15% tax bracket for companies who built here, and to stop the Trump tax cuts from expiring.
You see, the government idiots consider tax cuts as government spending. So if you do $4 trillion in tax cuts, the government considers that $ 4 trillion in spending.
The debt ceiling redemption on Jan 1st will make Trump have to figure out how to pass the tax cuts without going over the debt ceiling and triggering a default. Do you get it now?
By not moving the non-existent debt ceiling back two more years, the “true conservatives” just stopped you from getting more of your money returned to you by tax cuts and they kept more money in the government for a bigger gov. In effect, they just voted for the exact opposite of what they tell you they want and don’t for a second think they don’t know that.

When I lived in my parents’ home sometimes they would make a homemade cough syrup of whiskey, honey, & lemon. I don’t know the proportions, possibly equal of each, but remember it tasting pretty bad, but then I’m no big fan of whiskey
With an upset stomach we’d have ginger ale, Verner’s is the Best, lemon-lime pop, or some type of cola. My mom used to also make jello water, which I think came from dissolving a packet of jello in double the water needed to get it to set up. As a kid I’d take it warm but as an adult I’d probably sip it as hot as I could tolerate it. My dad liked something called milk toast when he was sick. I’ve never had it but I think it was warm or hot milk with buttered toast points to dip in it.
My kids’ pediatrician recommended the BRATS diet when sick:
Bananas
Rice
Applesauce
Toast
Saltines
I like spiced chai tea when fighting something & often crave black licorice, which helps me feel better. We often take extra vitamin C & vitamin D &/or an elderberry & zinc chewable tablet to fight stuff off. When our kids were young Hubby would often take Zicam or Airborne when any of us were sick so he didn’t catch crap running through the family as often as the rest of us did.
I used a lot of Q-Tree recommendations last time he had covid to help him kick it quicker:

various teas, we have a huge collection but choices are mood &/or symptom based
Often with a bad respiratory illness we’ll use a store brand “nyquill” to get better sleep & a “dayquill” for multi-symptom relief without drowsiness.
Our special needs son had RSV twice as an infant, hospitalized both times, & had lingering lung issues. We had a nebulizer to deliver albuterol. He was pretty uncooperative with the process so instead of him breathing it in through his mouth, he’d block the outlet with his tongue & the mist would vent through the pressure release valve, so I’d get him on my lap in a head lock & press the mouthpiece up to his nostrils to get most of the meds in him while we watched something together–fun times…
We often prayed for each other for healing & a few times had “the elders of the church” pray with laying on of hands & anointing with oil in Jesus’ Name for healing.
Here’s a snippet from my aunt who just turned 88 this week, prayer runs in the family
My aunt is a botanist & has built her professional & personal life around plants. She also went to Antarctica on some scientific expedition & swam in the sea there for bragging rights–Hi Steve. She collects mullein leaves when up at my parents’ Cottage in Northern Michigan & I believe pours boiling water over them steeping for a while to make a tea, I think, to use when fighting a cough. I think she strains it through a coffee filter, paper towel, or tightly woven fabric to get out the little flannel fibers that are on the leaves before drinking.
Oh & we used to make sassafras tea from the leaves or possibly roots of sassafras trees we’d find in the North Woods to make a root beer flavored tea which was fun & good for the soul if not any other health benefit

Real licorice, from the root of the licorice plant, is medicinal. It is rare in “candy licorice” commonly found in candy — which has its good points and bad points. On the good side, you don’t have kids regularly overdosing on the stuff because it is really potent; on the bad side, nobody knows the good effects the actual plant can have because they’ve never encountered it.
You can sometimes find it in imported licorice products.
Dried licorice root can be purchased from any natural food store and is widely available.
It is available as a tea.
I’m not remotely claiming that licorice is medicinal, just how it helps me feel better when I’m fighting something, have a sore throat, or even a cough. Maybe the Ludens was slightly medicinal but perhaps the effect, for me, is psychological AND physical

I ate mine with a soup spoon.
My mom would bring my dad a small plate with toast points on it but in the middle of the plate would be a tall, slender, handled mug containing the warmed milk. I think he dipped the toast in & ate it like a dunked cookie & sipped the milk from the mug.

In the FDA study showing dangers from taking sassafrass, they used astronomical amounts of sassafrass. Many many many many many times more than you would ever get making root beer. This was done so they could ban it to help protect big pharma. The health benefits of sasssafrass are not patentable and root beer is a lot cheaper than the drugs.
There is absolutely no danger in using sassafrass root.

Luden’s cough or throat drops used to have a Black Licorice & Honey version that was my favorite. I haven’t seen those in decades so don’t know if they’re still available but that might be the origin of my craving for BL when fighting something. Also it just feels soothing on the throat. I’ll usually pop 3 Good & Plenties in my mouth & chew up two but suck on the third one for a while to let that coat my throat for some minutes for the best effect.
The Black Cherry ones were great, too…

My daughter’s first pediatrician recommended honey, whiskey, and lemon for her when she was a toddler! She’s only 38, so this wasn’t that long ago. He was a great guy. I still use it. One tablespoon of each ingredient, with about a 1/4 cup of hot water to mix it in. It works for sore throats and coughs.
Vernor’s Ginger Ale really is the best, but I can’t find it around here.
Verner’s is great. I think they make it, or they did, in Detroit. Maybe it’s distribution is more of a regional thing but I would guess Amazon, or similar (if there is such a thing) might be able to ship it. My dad loves a Verner’s float w/ vanilla ice cream.
If we’d used hot water to cut that cough syrup I’d probably tolerate it better now too!

Honest question re Aunt Mary’s Tonic: is there a substitute for cinnamon? I have an intolerance for it. Cinnamon is a bark, and anything tree or evergreen related (like star anise) I have to avoid.

One way to determine a substitute for medicinal spice is whether it is a “warming” or a “cooling” spice. Cinnamon is a warming spice, so I would sub in another. Here are some warming spices:

Cardamom
Cayenne
Cloves
Interestingly, ginger appears on lists of warming AND cooling spices! So it it multi-purpose. And my favorite of the above list.

Is there out there any definitive information for how long the damn spike protein will mess with someone’s system? At this point, I’m sure that I got too close to people who had recent COVID shots. I could always smell, and no fever, but all the other symptoms are very similar.
This is a very complicated question. As an example, the corona spike attacks the ACE2 receptor on cells. If you’re taking a prescription ACE inhibitor (used for blood pressure), this may effect the longevity of the spike attacks.
In addition, of course, there is the question of the amount, location, and duration of exposure.
It can be around for days, weeks, or even months.
The better question is what can be done to purge the spike protein.
I don’t do pharmaceuticals. If pharmacists won’t take them – and I was in a dorm with pharmacy students in college and they wouldn’t take them – why would I?

From papers that I’ve read, the period of time of spike lingering appears to between 180 – 247 days post-vax in COVID-19 vaxxed people. It **may** be shorter if the vax was the latest “2024-2025 Formula” version.
In terms of “vaccine” shedding onto other people, I’m not sure regarding the time frame of spike protein lingering.
However, the big thing is that non-vaxxed people still have their natural immune systems and their natural Uridine (which are both damaged or destroyed in vaxxed people.)
From the sheer amount of stuff my body is producing to trap dirt and germs, I’d say my immune system is probably fine.

My view of the budget seems to be different from most people here.
Why do farmers need help, and which farmers is it? Is it the Saudi Arabia farmers growing alfalfa in Arizona to send to Saudi Arabia to feed their horses? Or maybe it is the Bill Gates farmers needing money to let their land lay dormant. Perhaps it is the Sam Donaldson farmers needing to be paid because there is not a market for their Angora goat wool.
Why does fema need money? They have been getting appropriations in the crs and have been spending it on supporting illegals. If you deport the illegals, fema has money.
The government budget ends in September. The first quarter of the 2025 budget has already been appropriated through crs.
The government gets most of its income from Jan-April. Pass a balanced budget and no debt ceiling raise is necessary.
The government income receipts for 2024 were 4.92 T.
The government spent 6.75 T.
The government deficit was 1.83 T.
Elon Musk said he would cut 2T. That is more than enough to balance the budget.
Elon and President Trump need to do what they said they would do or they should be considered nothing but more scammers.

We want a wall, but there is no money for a wall. You want to move illegals out, there’s no money budgeted for that in the CR, so on and so on.
What it comes down to is do we want MAGA fast or do we want MAGA slow.
Schumer is planning on using the debt ceiling to impede MAGA.
It’s like remodeling a cruddy old house. Congress is only paying to maintain the cruddy old house. Our money is being wasted in the process. Trump wants to remodel the cruddy old house but there’s no new money ear marked in the current budget to do that. Schumer is going to tell him no, we haven’t approved the funds for that. It’s the Wall all over again. You remember how long it took for Trump to come up with funds for the wall. It was painful but he did it and that was pittance of money. Trump will have to go out and find the monies to pay to remodel the house unless Congress allots new money with expectation of being paid back with interest which is the plan. Again, Trump can’t implement new programs quickly with out new money. It would be like shackling him to a canon ball and expecting him to sprint down the track and everyone will be surrounding him telling him “Faster” “Faster” while failing to notice he’s shackled to a canon ball.
Trump and his people will have to explain the numbers to The People. We’re fresh out of blind faith in more spending.

Quick story about govt. shutdowns and the theatrics behind them. One year when I was reporting at CBS News during a govt. shutdown, I think 2013, we were sincerely searching for real life impact. When we couldn’t find any, *that* should have been part of the story. Instead, we kept trying to create the appearance of an impact. It wasn’t really trying to be dishonest. It was, in my retrospective view, because the general editorial idea for the story was to show how bad the “Republican” shutdown was for ordinary

I’ve written quite a bit about this but we, as journalists, too often “decide” the story in advance and shape the facts to fit our narrative, rather than gathering information and letting that tell the story, whatever it may be. Anyway, the Ds were blaming Rs for the shutdown, so we were calling Ds and the Obama administration for ideas to report what was the real impact. Taking our cue, these officials fabricated impact that we could report. For example, they cordoned off outdoor public monuments in Washington DC. We knew and even discussed in the newsroom that this made no sense. These monuments weren’t “manned” to begin with. The only reason to cordon them off from the public was so that visiting tourists would see the “impact” of the shutdowns and the news media would have something to take pictures of and interview people about. There are other examples but this is the one I remember the most.

I was literally discussing this with some of my kids yesterday. When that shutdown was happening we had reason to go the local Social Security office to address an SSI issue on my son’s case. Well we were there for hours before getting to the window to speak with a worker & she told us that she “wasn’t allowed” to do the thing we needed to have done because of the government shut down. iirc she said that they were fully staffed in the office, per usual, but there were a number of regular duties that the (fake pain) shutdown “forbid” the from doing.
