Just researched this. The truth seems to be somewhere in between, but it’s very murky. There is agreement that external swinging double doors were not found in cold climates.
Double-swinging doors apparently go back to Victorian times, and are more useful for kitchen/butler entrance than for the front entrance to the establishment. Some sources, however, say they were popular in bars, taverns, grocery stores, etc., and did have some level of opening at top and bottom for smoke ventilation – but Hollywood made them ridiculously small for effect. The bigger story is that they were not the “real” doors when used on the front. Front doors were more like a barn door or doors, and opened up against the wall, while the swinging double doors (predecessor of the revolving door) allowed people carrying loads to enter and exit without using their hands. One recent brand of double-swinging door hinge was being sold in 1870. Another patent dates from the 1880s. An even more interesting thing is the ladies’ door!

Hiking, bushwhacking, fishing, seining, camping – especially anything around water.
They were made for slogging thru mud and water and therefore were very popular with cavers. You would ruin a good pair of leather hiking boots in one trip, and sneakers meant you risked a twisted ankle. In the early 1970s those were the only other options since Cordura had not become popular for outdoor stuff until after 1977.

I was first introduced to furlongs per fortnight when I read a Murphy’s Law for engineers (heck, engineers discovered Murphy’s law) and one of the corollaries of Murphy’s law was that dimensions in a specification would be in the most inconvenient units possible, and gave “furlongs per fortnight” as an example. (And I’ve known since high school (at least) what a fortnight is…I had read just enough British fiction.)

Doing genealogy research sometimes you run into property descriptions in chains & rods, iirc, which is very confusing, as are knots.
It’s either an eighth or a sixteenth of a mile (I think an eighth). I’m too lazy right now to look it up to confirm.
In fact the reason the mile is 5280 feet instead of 5000 is that Queen Elizabeth I wanted it to be a whole number of furlongs…IIRC. (She also took us mostly off the Troy system of weights, with the exception of precious metals; I can’t say for sure but I think she didn’t do them as was for fear of dorking up the monetary system.)
I bet you could put together another interesting post just focusing on weights & measures & their historical significance.

Fun bit of trivia — Santa Barbara, California, hired a passing ship captain to survey the old part of the city and put markers. After he collected his fee and left, they gradually noticed that the streets would sometimes not meet straight on at intersections.

They make THE POPE INTERSEX! This is the big exciting twist at the end. I wish I had known so I wouldn’t have watched it. There are almost no redeeming characters in the movie – every cardinal is morally bankrupt/repulsive. The only exception of course is the intersex pope (who – surprise! – has female reproductive parts) & the cardinal who keeps her secret – bc of course that kind of Catholic secret-keeping must be lionized. I’m disgusted. What a thing to release to streaming just in time for Christmas. They would never do this to Muslims, but Christians/Catholics are always fair game to mock/belittle/smear.

It is my current practice to read reviews of ALL movies and if they have ANY wokey bullshit in them, they are a no watch.
For religious movies, I read religious reviewers. If there in non-Biblical, non-Scriptural bullshit in them, the are a NEVER watch.
I can highly recommend a great film I just watched called “Unsung Hero” to anyone. It is a true story, and a paean to the powers of motherhood. DH cried more than me.

From the description of the movie, it looks like the writers synthesized the two conclaves of 1978 where there really was intrigue to get a liberal cardinal on the Papal Throne (Bellini). Remember, Pope John Paul I died of a heart attack just 34 days into office. Cardinal Siri of Florence was the traditionalist leading the votes. Well, he was the one who nominated both JPI and JPII, and threw his support behind them, hence their elections.
At the time, there was a HUGE investigation just completed on the freemasons in the Vatican that was awaiting action. (Never happened) Cardinal Gagnon could not get JPII to move on it. JPI tried, and died as a result of an argument with Cardinal Bellini when he wanted to send Bellini to be the Patriarch of Venice, and Bellini, who was Prefect of Bishops, wouldn’t go. It’s documented in Fr. Charles Murr’s book, Murder in the 33rd Degree.
Since then, both 2005 an 2013 were both Conclaves where the liberals sought to put one of their own on the throne, and in 2013 succeeded. Fr. Murr tells the story in a podcast I’ll have to find, but it is backed up by a book titled, The Saint Gallen Mafia, by Julia Meloni and another that’s sitting in my to be read pile. Fascinating reading.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

It would also off set the likely hood we’d be adopting a mostly liberal state given population clusters like Quebec ,Montreal, Toronto etc… likely able to dominate the politics of just one state. IMO the GWP article is exaggerating the import of the moment. Yes, Commala got interrupted — by a spontaneous show of joy at the vote total showing that their candidate won. No doubt it was a relief to have the process over with and official after all the speculation about what might happen. No doubt it was cathartic to express happiness after all the Dem attacks, lies, attempted assassinations, cheating, etc. I don’t blame them. To characterize it as a purposeful humiliation of Commala is going too far, IMO.
I consider what Pelosi did to be the worst display I’ve ever seen in Congress. To tear up the speech of the president who just delivered it to the body you are standing before is such a show of disrespect that I don’t have adequate words.

A few points, and then I’m going to let peace flow back over this.
Attribution is something other people tell us we need, but I’ve actually written things (which very few people have read, but those who did were likely very interesting people) where I’ve questioned the idea that we have ownership over any ideas at all. I have funny ideas about information. Some of that thinking has bearing on things that are happening around me, and I struggle to understand why, but I accept it, and Trust In God.
My name is much less important than just the fact that SD quoted me, which makes me immensely happy. In fact, it’s even more than that.
I find it beautiful that Sundance would understand me to the point that he would quote me with only quotation marks but WITHOUT my name. It may not make sense to most people now, but it will makes sense after the inauguration, when I can explain a few more things.

There is more to that story that I want to save for later. It has to do with Wheatie and the inauguration. I don’t know everything about it yet – I just know that good things are happening. I ask that people accept this for now.
Now is our time to celebrate. Trump (in the past) and Musk (more recently) have said things relevant to this. Trump talked about greatness, and Musk talked about positivity. There is a solution where they are totally correct, and I can see it. We are not talking censorship – we are talking focus and direction. It’s time. Ideas do have a life of their own. Kind of like music. Musicians influence each other is large & small ways. Oftentimes you can really tell the influence, like the Beatles on PFR, but many times it is more subtle. However there are limits as to how much music one is allowed to “steal” overtly without legal problems. I think that is rather similar to the realm of ideas, especially when you are talking straight up quoting/stealing of someone else’s words. You reference Oppenheimer in your standing quote on your website banner overlay & don’t just steal his very profound words…
My grandpa was furious that JFK is credited for the “ask not” quotation. According to Grandpa, whose initials ironically were JEK, the original quotation is from Oliver Wendell Holmes. How hard would it have been for JFK to have added that attribution before he uttered those famous words? It would have upped his credibility in the eyes of someone like my grandpa & would have set a better example for those who follow. We learn from each other & often stand on the shoulders of those who came before…
So maybe I’m being a hypocrite here, for I regularly reference Scripture in my speech/writing & only sometimes put it in quotation marks. I rarely provide a reference to the Bible passage for I rarely know exactly where to find the specific one without doing some digging for I’ve never been good at memorizing Where the words might be found but am usually pretty good at loosely grasping What the words say.
I guess that I assume that Believers & those with Biblical knowledge, like Steve, will “get” my allusion to The Book as much of that language & thinking has seeped into Western discourse for centuries, if not millennia 🙂
My opinion on attribution is about truth. It comes up frequently here and elsewhere on the internet when people misattribute quotations. That can change the entire gist of what someone thought and was saying, their message to the people of their times and to the world.
In formal writing, attribution is crucial. You don’t take someone’s words from the 1800s, change a few words to make it fit an entirely different discipline, and publish that quotation as new without giving credit to its originator. (This situation came up with a piece I was editing in the past.) Everyone who was familiar with the original quote would know that it had become bastardized without explanation.
It’s not so much a matter of people needing others to credit them; it’s about having respect for the thoughts and contributions of others. And bottom line, again: it’s about truth.
I didn’t go to the source of that SD passage, but it looks as if he at least placed it in quotation marks, indicating that those were the words of someone else. In that case, he was not plagiarizing you by trying to make it look as if those were his words. I understand there might be a reason for what he did and I hope we can have an explanation when appropriate. But (my feelings and opinion): “Don’t feed me BS. Don’t tell me something is one way when I know good and well it is not. In that regard, don’t tell me someone said something when they did not.” I don’t like being lied to, and I don’t like when people steal someone else’s work and words. I can only imagine that the desire and need for truth is universal.

Even when Parliament comes back on March 24th, he didn’t say he’d resign then. He’s still probably scheming with the NDP to get them to prop him up, as they always do.

By the way, I wanted to thank you for your opening post last Friday. The TL;DR is that Sundance’s quoting of me is very well-intended, but I am not fully ready to state publicly how I know that, because it means revealing other things that I’m hesitant to talk about until after the inauguration. I know that sounds mysterious, but it has to do with some things that go back to the 2018-2019 timeframe. It’s all very good stuff. Two election cycles ago, after I was introduced to my fake registration, I corrected that when walking in, and was then given a receipt for a printed-out ballot.
When I looked it over, it was not from the zip code I live in.
There were two judges absent and one initiative missing.
The only reason I realized the ballot was wrong was because I had looked up the sample ballot online prior to early voting.
