Sounds like the influenza A which is everywhere – that has a nasty cough and for many people runny sinuses, too, which makes the cough last forever. If that’s it, then it’s best to hack out the stuff in your lungs, even if disgusting. Mucinex is helpful. I have so many friends and neighbors who have had to get chest X-rays. It’s very ugly.

TY Wolf. I’m taking it easy because I have almost no energy. My front sinuses are open but there’s thick junk in the back. There’s some junk in my lungs but it’s mostly a dry cough. Lots of body & joint aches & some in lymph nodes. Oh I have a fairly sore throat & one eustachian tube is pretty achy too. It came on suddenly as I felt fine early on Wednesday but that night was coughing a bit. Last night there was a fever w/ chills but nothing like that today so far…thankfully…

In the kerfuffle over J.D. Vance’s incredible, historic remarks at the conference in Europe, I have been thinking a lot about our supposed “shared values” with Europeans. I have concluded that, historically speaking, we really don’t have any. I’ll try to explain.
When white people showed up in America, it was a vast land filled with Native Americans that Europeans did not consider to be “fully human.” They saw them as inferior creatures with no “civilization” at all. So America was a completely “civilization free” zone. There was no government, outside of the ones left behind in England, Spain, etc. And freedom of religion was the primary reason many people came, as they were not free to worship as they pleased in Europe.
That meant as people came to the colonies, they were leaving behind the generational boundaries of Europe. They brought some rules with them; but many people rejected those rules over the time between 1607 and the 1750s, when rebellion against the Crown started up.
Later, other people risked it all to come here with a dollar in their pocket for the freedom we had built. Only the brave, with rebellion against the rules in their hearts, would make such a commitment.
In Europe, on the other hand, government had ruled people all the way back to Rome. When the Romans conquered, they instituted rules. People were told where they could buy and sell (market towns), where they could marry or be buried or baptized (only certain churches were licensed to do these things), what land they could farm, and on and on. There was also “allowed” state religion.. Rules, regulations, strictures. It is their inheritance.
We are descendants of people who left “civilization,” i.e. government all the way back to Rome, behind. As such, we are VERY different from Europeans. They are inherently socialist, and subjected to government control that the American spirit instinctively and vehemently rejects.
An interesting take, one with which I’m inclined to agree.
However, it lends credence to the notion that ‘white guys’ founded this country in order to ensure white supremacy rule.
I don’t think so.
They weren’t insuring freedom for “white guys” so much as they were for religion. Which at that time in Europe was mostly Christian, and some Jewish. Remember, Europe had also just come through battling the Turks and Moors invasions.
When they arrived over here, part of the reason they saw the NA’s as “lesser” was their paganism.
Of course they didn’t but the looney left has been saying it for years. I merely wanted to point out that it can be fit into your views.

Sometimes when I am writing about these huge philosophical subjects, I forget how little history most of us were taught. I love history, but most of what I know I learned on my own.
I could write reams on the colonies before the Revolution, and how Americans became what we are. Just because a lot of the “average” guys saw NA’s as less-than, many of the leadership didn’t. As an example of the dichotomy of thought there, many saw marriage between colonists and Natives as wrong, but some leaders of the 1600-1700s encouraged the marriages to further relations between the colonists and the tribes. And really, a whole lot of the problem boiled down to religion. My 5th gg-mother was a Native American Christian-convert. But a lot of the NA’s didn’t want to convert.
This is a monster of a subject.

I once ran across a document within which the death of a Native American resulted in the payment of an absolutely incredible list of goods as compensation. My “half breed” NA 6th gg-father fought in both the French and Indian War and the Revolution. There is an amazing history in America that many don’t even know about.

They want America to be just like them, which in their view means America must go along with all their policies that are calculated to end in failure for the people of the countries while benefiting those who are pulling the strings.

It all goes back to Boeing’s merger with McDonell Douglas. Since it’s inception Boeing was run by engineers, which is why it’s final products were so excellent.
MD, on the other hand, was a defense contractor that, at it’s end, was run by paper pushers with business degrees, not engineering backgrounds.
After the merger, the paper pushers managed to push the engineers out of the C-suite. In essence, MD’s mgmt took over Boeing. It has been game-changing for the company in terms of how things are managed.
Boeing, a classic “engineer’s company”, was taken over by “budget cutting”, “cost savings”, “build ‘em cheap and sell ‘em dear” DC/DoD types.
And they had inroads into the FAA (the regulator), who was….depending on who you talk to….strong armed/coerced/bribed/blackmailed/etc into ABDICATING oversight inside Boeing to….Boeing.
Anyone recall the former Boeing whistleblower who was in the middle of a lawsuit against Boeing that the courts had allowed to go forward, and after his 1st day of deposition (with the 2nd day to follow), suddenly and inexplicably “committed suicide”?

But I don’t let it bother me, because flying…for me….IS living!

I had always wondered where the “air intake” on jets was. The use of engine intake air in the cabin and flight deck makes engineering sense, but I’ll be frank – the dumping of oil upstream of the air intake sounds like – well – something that would not get past a CEO who was an engineer.
I like that there is a fast procedural solution, and an even better software solution, but still – hope it gets strong-fixed ASAP.
I get your point that it’s not dire, relative to car travel – a point that needs to be made more often. But we can’t let that relative safety of air travel get nickeled and dimed to death, or it will simply go away, and we will be saying “air travel is no worse than driving!” Don’t want to go there!

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan Refused to Order Restraining Order Against Musk or DOGE, After Calling Unusual Holiday Hearing
The background here is interesting. Late last night, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan called for an unusual hearing on a federal holiday to hear the arguments of 14 states who are seeking a temporary restraining order (TRO) against Elon Musk and the Dept of Govt Efficiency (DOGE).
It’s interesting because Judge Chutkan called for the hearing today just 45 minutes after Trump’s U.S Solicitor General asked the Supreme Court to intervene on the matter of judicial TRO’s issued against President Trump’s Title II authority. Last night in another case, Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris filed an “APPLICATION TO VACATE THE ORDER ISSUED BY THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA AND REQUEST FOR AN IMMEDIATE ADMINISTRATIVE STAY” with the Supreme Court. [pdf HERE] 45 minutes later Chutkan called for today’s TRO hearing.
District Judge Chutkan refused to issue the TRO today, saying she would take up the matter later.

She is kicking that can of worms down the road… Since those TROs are likely to be found invalid for several reasons, (of which she does allude to cart-before-horse timing, mentioning it looking like it is prophylactic), she might have realized that she’ll look slightly better having delayed the decision. Certainly easier for her if it becomes moot before she has to decide and upset whoever power-that-be who thought this case was a good idea to begin with. And she might also not yet know how much «there» there is, for her to dare to deny it right away.

Not enough info on this one to comment yet. On initial look, I suspect icy runways and taxiways played a role, in combination with a crew that wasn’t being careful enough. Super easy to start sliding and then lose control, especially after the flight controls stop having any directional authority at lower speeds.

I am one of those people who likes to reduce concepts to as concise a formula as possible. Something on the order of the theory of everything (TOE) in physics which, as I understand it, is to explain the universe in a single concise equation (framework). I ran across this in my reading today and I thought it made a heroic attempt to do likewise with God’s law. All of these examples are from the First Testament. Jesus takes up the challenge in the Second Testament and reduces them to two: love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself.
Listen to the marvelous attenuation of the Law’s demands that is credited to Rabbi Simlai of the third century. Moses gave us 613 laws, and David reduced them to eleven (Ps. 15:2–5: “Whoever walks blamelessly, does what is right, speaks truth from the heart, does not slander, does no evil to a friend nor reproaches one, despises a reprobate, honors God-fearers, swears to one’s own hurt but is constant, does not accept interest on loans, and takes no bribe—that person will dwell on God’s mountain”). Isaiah reduced them to six (33:15: “Whoever walks righteously and speaks uprightly, despises the gain of oppressions, shakes off bribes, refuses to listen to violence, and refuses to look on evil will dwell on the heights”). Then Micah reduced them to three (6:8: “God has shown you what is good, and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”).
