I read your “filioque” link with interest. Not coming from either a Catholic nor Orthodox tradition I found the controversies to be driven by people who might have been more interested in their own version of summarizing scriptural “truth” rather than what the Scriptures actually said on these matters.

Granting such issues the level of “law” is astounding to me. This appears to be a legalized process, perhaps similar to Phariseeism, where people have become more concerned with their own viewpoints & how to express them than to what exactly Scripture says on these matters.

All of these controversies appeared to grow from the disagreements about what the verbiage of a “creed” should be when the creed itself was already extra-Biblical. To fixate on such instead of the Word of God directly is astounding to me.

I served for years on our kids’ Christian School Board. Later I served for years on our church’s Governing Board. The legalism of the decision making process was incredibly tedious in both cases. It is possible that I’m not “wired” for administrative affairs but boy all of this historic upheaval reminds me how scripture, quoting Jesus directly, addresses such:
