Elect Angels
When God created the angels, they were all good just like the rest of creation (Genesis 1:31). Angels were holy and faithfully devoted to the Lord, but this changed when Satan rebelled against God (Isaiah 14:12–15; Ezekiel 28:16). Many angels followed Satan’s rebellion and thus became “fallen” angels, or demons (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 12:3–4). In contrast, the angels who remained faithful to the Lord are known as “holy angels” or “elect angels” (Mark 8:38; 1 Timothy 5:21).
The Greek word for “elect” found in 1 Timothy 5:21 refers to being chosen or picked. This would indicate that God chose some angels not to fall with Satan. The same word in the verse, eklekton, is used elsewhere for Christians who are elected and chosen by God in salvation (Romans 8:33; Titus 1:1). The word suggests that the elect angels, like elect people, were chosen by God and cannot lose their elect position. None of the elect angels will rebel against God or lose their chosen status, just as Christians cannot lose their salvation as God’s elect children (John 10:28; Romans 8:38–39). Secure in their standing before the Lord, elect angels cannot sin or go against the commands of God but will remain faithful to the Lord forever.
Of course, the fact that the holy angels are “elect” does not imply they are “saved” in the same way that Christians are. Both angels and Christians are chosen and elected by the Lord, but only humans can experience the new birth, forgiveness, and other aspects of salvation. The elect angels cannot experience forgiveness, since they have never sinned. Furthermore, Jesus died for humanity, not for angels. He took on human flesh and came to save mankind from their sins; His sacrifice was not to save the fallen angels (Hebrews 2:16). Angels “long to look into these things,” and are fascinated by the fact that the Son of God laid down His life to save humans (1 Peter 1:12). In this way, the election of angels is different from the election of Christians.
In addition to calling them “chosen” or “elect” angels, Scripture also designates them as good and “holy angels” (Mark 8:38). Worshipping and serving God are the main purposes of the elect angels (Revelation 7:11). Like Christians, elect angels are servants of God who seek to bring Him glory (Revelation 22:9). God uses the elect angels to carry out His will and to provide ministry to believers (Hebrews 1:14). Throughout history, elect angels have been a part of God’s plan in delivering messages (Daniel 8:16; 9:21; Luke 1:19, 26), carrying out judgment (Genesis 19:13; Psalm 78:49; Revelation 14:17–20), and providing encouragement to God’s people (Acts 27:23).
The elect angels have the special purpose of serving God and doing as He commands. The elect angels minister to believers today, and they will also play a major part in the events of the end times. The power and position of the elect angels are awe-inspiring, but the Bible teaches that Jesus’ followers are more blessed than even they, since believers “have been made complete in Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority” (Colossians 2:10, BSB).

I do feel better. Needed more sleep. Someone in the house has had a head cold for a week. I’ve done my usual immune support stuff and have had little to no symptoms myself, but lack of sleep was tipping things in the wrong direction. If I could just simply stay off the computer after sunset it would be a lot healthier for me. But y’all are way too fun to skip reading for too long. LOL
I understand that computer lure. Until I fully kick the “flu” or whatever is messing with me I just sleep when I can & it’s usually several times a day &/or night. But our online gang is really a joy to interface with & it’s so refreshing that it’s also hard to stay away for too long

I can’t remember if I told you this story in the family lore before or not…
Once when Josiah was pretty young, mid to late grade school, I was snuggling him on the couch for some reason & he decided to cop a feel of one of my breasts & I was Pissed!
Hubby came home from work & got an earful about it & had words, lots of words, with the lad.
Fast forward a bit & Michael had taken all four kids for a couple hours, dropping our oldest, Nathaniel, at basketball practice at a local school then taking the other 3 kids Christmas shopping at a nearby department store.
Josiah used to love to slip away when we were out & he’d refuse to answer when we called his name…sigh. So Michael’s waking through the store & realizes J is missing, again, so starts looking around. Suddenly he spies him up on a platform with a female mannequin & as J is cuffing the boob of the mannequin he calls out “Fake boobs are OK right Dad?”
Of course at that very moment another mom from our kids’ Christian School is in the vicinity & our family is Dying in case she overheard Josiah basically being a public perv LOL We never had the nerve to ask her if she caught what was happening at the time…
Kids will be kids! LOL!!!

I was visiting a friend with a 2 year old son and almost got to see what I shouldn’t have seen when he decided he wanted to be fed right now and pulled up her shirt. She caught it in time.

This just happens to be one of those things where you have to decide where to draw the line between natural and fake. PURELY natural time is to use a sundial (or wear a watch that mimics it). No correction to mean solar time, no timezones. Even if you’re willing to do timezones and therefore accept being up to half an hour off “natural (here meaing mean solar time)”…even on standard time you can be off by more than half an hour if your time zone’s boundary has been shifted for convenience (to go around a state or metropolitan boundary for instance). Go far enough east in your timezone and it’s entirely possible that for you but not for most people in your timezone, you’d be closer to natural time on DST. Or alternatively, that you are effectively on DST even though you’re on standard time.
Nevertheless, going to standard time would have more people closer to Mean Solar Time than permanent DST would.

There was a time, there, when Indiana couldn’t seem to make up its mind which time zone it wanted to be in, and I think for a while they didn’t do DST. (If I had to guess that was probably while they were doing Eastern Time.)
Now there’s this boundary that loops around the Chicago area and also around the southern tip of the state. You can cross a line going SOUTH and end up in a different time zone.
If you choose your route with care you can flip back and forth between DST and standard time multiple times, crossing in and out of the Navajo Rez (which does DST) from Arizona (which doesnt), and also crossing from Navajoland into and out of the Hopi Reservation (which like “white” Arizona does not do DST. Each of these has exclaves within the other and the Hopi reservation is completely surrounded by the Navajo reservation. There’s one place where you can walk across the street in the middle of a town and have to change your watch.

If a gasoline engine car, has a dead –as in bad- battery and the car is jump started, will the car continue to run? Or is a good battery essential to an IC battery running in order to provide spark to the engine?
In my experience, no, you better get it to a shop or auto parts place before turning off the engine.
My battery, despite being completely discharged by thieves in January, charged-up again and has been working since. Then, again, it was brand-new when stolen.
OTOH, if an old battery has gone bad and needs a jump, that won’t turn it into a good battery. It will likely run until you turn it off, but will not restart.

It would not start with a jump so the guy’s dad will be picking it up with a roll-back.
It’d be easier to use another vehicle to take the old battery in, have it tested, and (if necessary, which is likely) purchase a new battery.
NOT when it is NOT my vehicle and I am just about out of gas. We told the guy to call a friend or family to deal with the problem when we could not jump start his vehicle.
Sorry, we do know him and he is an alcoholic. Therefore I want him OFF my property since alcohol, animals & farm equipment do not mix. We already booted once. This is #2 when he showed up out of the blue.

TL;DR – once the battery can’t hold charge (meaning it’s bad), you’re screwed.
If you jump-start a vehicle and it stops running after you remove the jumper cables, the battery is either bad or too weak. A weak battery can be stabilized by charging for some period of time. Sometimes you can charge a bad battery for a while, and the bad battery will hold long enough to get somewhere, if it’s only marginally bad, but best to follow them to the shop. Similarly, a good battery or a starter unit can keep a completely bad battery going while the engine is running, to get it to a repair shop.
A good battery shop can tell you roughly how long your car battery will stay functional. This is one reason to use a battery shop instead of just any repair shop.

The Capt of a carrier is only the Capt of the vessel. But an aircraft carrier is always part of a “battle group”, with many protective and support vessels surrounding it.
The battle group is always commanded by an admiral.
And for a careerist, no…command of a carrier is not the “pinnacle” of a career. Achieving flag rank and assuming command of a carrier battle group, or even becoming a fleet admiral, is the pinnacle of an outstanding career, with the absolute “Everest” becoming Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) within the navy (one of the joint chiefs) or becoming the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs (the absolute highest).

Anyone who preaches faith alone is false, as even the demons believe, but the bird does not fly on one wing alone. Faith is merely the beginning of learning how to fly.
The other wing…the “acts” of taking up one’s cross, rejecting sin at every turn, and obeying Christ in all things…is the twin to faith that makes the dove fly.
Moreover, any person who claims to be a Christian but does not fear losing the grace and mercy of their salvation is in danger of hellfire, because the fear of the Lord’s righteous and perfect judgment is not in them.

TY TB All of those scriptures referenced at your link are valid & in play in this discussion. I won’t claim to have perfect knowledge on this or any topic. In this domain, as well as in a number of other scriptural based controversies, there are verses that underlie the various viewpoints & it is hard to reconcile them into a cohesive whole, in some ways, at least for me. Some of these types of controversies are what has lead to various fractures in the Church as a whole & perhaps, at least in part, why there are different denominations, where people feel strongly enough on various topics so as to segregate themselves from others in the Faith, so I don’t desire to see such a fracturing here as this topic is chewed over a bit today…
In refuting the “once saved always saved” viewpoint I don’t think it’s accurate to say that one could “lose” their salvation. In as much as it (might be) is possible to fall away from the faith the only way it could happen, in my opinion, is by a deliberate act of the will of the Believer. This is hard to fathom that someone who has come under the Blood of Christ would choose to ultimately reject the free gift of salvation but the numerous verses referenced in the link that I shared appear to imply the possibility.
So I don’t think that anyone could Accidentally “lose” their salvation, including for all the reasons & scriptures quoted in your link. In this anyone in the faith should take comfort for they cannot be snatched inadvertently out of God’s hand.
Could they, tragically, choose to turn their back on the Lord, scorn His sacrifice, & consign themselves to the flames? It appears that this is a Hellish trajectory that even the Redeemed could pursue. To do so would be the insane wanderings of the increasingly calloused heart, having once been made flesh choosing, in a diabolical trajectory, to ultimately return to its pre-regenerate stony state–unfathomably.
I hope I am wrong & that there is No Way that someone in the faith could ever remove themselves from God’s protective covering, but there are quite a few verses that appear to imply this possibility, at least to me, so I won’t make an emphatic declaration otherwise.
This topic generated a discussion between my husband & me as he heard the video playing from the link you shared. As might be expected we came at the issue from different perspectives. As earnest Bible believers it is still possible to see things quite differently when looking to the scriptures for guidance.

This is at the heart of the Arminian versus Calvinistic theological split. Doubt we solve it on here.
For the salvation transaction to work there has to be an exchange of the will and the heart. Without it there is no transaction. The sacrifice of Christ was too great for there not to be. We are totally dependent on His blood sacrifice for our remission of sins. His resurrection is what provides eternal life as a member of His family.
As a result I do not believe you lose your salvation even if you backslide into sin or renounce your salvation. Your salvation is not dependent on what you do after the transaction is completed. Peter backslid when harassed while Jesus was undergoing the trials leading up to the Cross, as did most of the others. He denied Jesus three times as Jesus predicted he would. He renounced his faith. Yet, he is still the rock on which the church was built. That meant he could not renounce his salvation, he simply needed to confess his sin and be restored into fellowship.
The problem is that many believe they transacted when they have not. That leads to Matt. 7:21-23.21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; leave Me, you who practice lawlessness.”
That tells us our hearts and actions will reflect our true relationship with Christ. If I have transacted with Christ I am His servant, His slave as Paul states. I give up title to myself. I cannot reclaim title, it is not mine to reclaim and he never gives up title to us no matter what we do. He will allow us to rebel, sin, and face the discipline of our actions; but not give over title to our soul. He states that he is always with us, even unto the end of the age per Matt. 28. That is also a central theme of the story of the prodigal son

I differ with this view in that it’s Not Peter who was the rock but the Revelation he received from the Lord that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God–That is the Rock upon which the church was built!
Matthew 16:18 (NRSV): And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail agains ti.”
The context, he is talking to Simon son of Jonah, and names him Petros (Peter) at this time. That’s from Greek for rock; and in the next phrase the Greek is “petra.”
He’s naming Simon “Rock” and saying that on this rock (Simon) he will build his church. Rock is a reference to Simon, most likely, because in the same sentence Jesus just hung the nickname “rock” on him.
There might be nuances of Greek grammar which argue against this, but I would think the translators would have done something about that.
Well I think that Peter was already known by that name as he is referred to both as Simon & Peter & even Simon Peter in the scriptures. It struck me that Jesus was making a play on the words Petros & Petra to make a point.
This would be similar, to my way of thinking, how there were some “sounds like” revelations in the OT in one of the prophets, I forget which one now. My OT professor in grad school, who was on the committee that did that original NIV translation, said that God would say to the prophet “what do you see?” & the prophet would answer with what he saw in front of him. The Hebrew words of the answer were similarly sounding to the Hebrew words for the thing that God was revealing to the prophet, sort of a word-picture/concept device. This is not clear to us in reading these passages in English or presumably other languages but shows clearly in Hebrew.
In my way of thinking Jesus was referring to the Rock of revelation upon which His church would be built, not on Peter himself. I believe this viewpoint of mine is more “protestant” in it’s thinking whereas Catholics claim that Peter was the first pope, even though the Catholic Church & popes didn’t exist for several hundred years.

From my perspective if Jesus meant Peter himself would be the rock upon which the church was built he would have used Petros not Petra. The revelation of Christ’s deity is the rock!
One of those links, the middle one above, make reference to other commentaries that shed light on the topic, but I don’t know how to find them to check:

That’s the sort of issue I was thinking about when I talked about the nuances of Greek grammar. Nouns can change ending depending on what case they are in, and the case has a lot to do with the meaning. Hypothetically, “Petra” might mean “on Petros”. I don’t know; I’m speculating.
I agree that the interpretation I favor is useful to (Roman) Catholics, it’s one of the things they go to when arguing against both Protestant and Eastern Orthodox, since Peter is supposed to have gone to Rome and become the first bishop of Rome. Even before the schism of 1054, the patriarchs in Rome were almost certainly using it to argue he was preeminent over the other four patriarchs (Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem and Alexandria) while the other four maintained they were equals. (I don’t know this is the case, but I’d be flabbergasted if it weren’t.)
Your reasoning makes sense in all points including church history. Veering away from scripture is always dicey & from my view (AND I think Scott’s) should be avoided. I don’t favor history &/or tradition over scripture but I think that Catholics & perhaps Orthodox view them on equal plains.
It is to me a modern form of Phariseeism where that sect gave equal weight to their traditions (Talmud) as they did to the Hebrew scriptures (Torah & more) in a sense elevating the rules & requirements of men to those of God–Dangerous!
Jesus roundly condemned the Pharisees in a number of places in the Gospels. They appear to be more institutions of men rather than of God & are designed in such a way to keep people out by having “secret knowledge” or practices that exclude the masses of the would-be faithful.
God Himself in the flesh as Jesus did not lay such heavy burdens on the people. The veil in the Temple being rent upon His death was showing physically that God’s very Presence was now available to all & not just hidden in the Holy of Holies as it had been since the tabernacle days. Pharisees, biblical AND modern versions, work hard to keep God multiple steps away from the people. Jesus Himself is the intercessor between God & man so we all can have Direct Access to the Throne of Grace!

My read on early history is that the Eastern Orthodox are more like the early church than the church in Rome, but even they though they are less centralized than Roman Catholicism, they do have a hierarchy of bishops, on up into those four patriarchates I mentioned (with, I think Moscow having become nearly a fifth one, but don’t hold me to that–it’s a massively confusing subject).

I don’t know if Greek Orthodox is part of Eastern Orthodox or not. Just tonight I was talking w/ my parents who have long time friends from a (mostly) past Prayer Group who both grew up GO but have been in various Independent, Spirit-Filled churches for decades now. Apparently one of their sons decided to return to his GO roots & he now believes that neither of his parents are Christians since they aren’t GO, as in only the GO are even saved!
We have RC friends who said basically that only the Catholic are truly saved, at least that’s what they were taught. We attended a Bible Study many years ago where everyone else there but Hubby & I were RC. Now this friend became a long time hunting buddy with my husband & he knows clearly that Michael & I are Christians & he’s seen the evidence of our faith over the decades & even looks to M to mentor him in the faith. We don’t tend to discuss religious beliefs much with them for there are likely many places where we’d have to agree to disagree!
Eastern Orthodoxy is decentralized to the point where the EO churches in many countries are “autocephalous” (they are an independent organization). They do their business (including services, liturgy, etc) in their own local languages. Greek orthodox is part of eastern though many conflate the two and use the terms interchangeably. (Russian Orthodox is too; in fact it’s the largest branch unless I am greatly mistaken.)
You can do a pretty deep dive into how it’s organized on wikipedia. I got to pick an EO priest’s brain one day. Apparently there are several orthodox churches in the US, basically all branches of some Old Country’s church, and they’re trying to create a single unified American Orthodox church. UNtil then, you can go to a Greek orthodox church or the Orthodox Church in America or Ethiopian or Slovakian…
The priest didn’t expect that to happen in our life times.
I find it interesting because it’s a “middle ground” (as far as being centralized) between the Protestant denominations, which have different beliefs from each other, and the monolithic Catholic church which does allow changes in “look and feel” but not in doctrine. This is decentralized but manages to hold to the same doctrine.

Rome actually had 5 major basilicas, one each for the five original patriarchs. St. John Lateran [not St. Peter’s! which “belonged” to the Patriarch of Constantinople] is the one that actually “belongs” to the Bishop of Rome–a new pope has to sit in that chair before he is the Bishop of Rome. One of them has since been demoted.

St. Pauls (Outside the Walls) – Patriarch of Alexandria
St. Mary Maggiore – Patriarch of Antioch (as in “Holy Hand Grenade of”)

Now of course these associations are moot other than St. John’s being the first ranking basilica in spite of not being St. Peter’s which seems, today, as if it ought to be the most important one.

Yeah, it’s history; the Bible certainly does not say anywhere to build five patriarchal basilicas (as they were known before the Great Schism) in Rome.
Sadly I don’t even technically know what a basillica is, as it’s definitely not in scripture, at least not by that name…
Originally a basilica was a type of Roman building that used trusses so there could be a lot of clear interior spaces.
The Christians liked using them for churches and now it pretty much means a certain architectural style of church.
Probably the best surviving example (sort of; it burned down but was restored as it was originally) is St. Paul’s Outside the Walls in Rome. I have visited it twice because architecture is (yet another) one of the many things that goes into my mental salvage yard.
I love architecture too! It was one of the five topics that were part of Humanities classes in college. At the end of the semester they would have a huge Final called the Synthesis & they used the school’s chapel because so many students were taking 3 of the required 12 credits at any time.
These 5 topics were what the synthesis would be comprised of & each would be written on a piece of paper that was tossed in a fish bowl. 3 papers were removed at the beginning of the Synthesis & you had to choose 2 of the 3 topics to write about. So everyone studied 4 topics, usually, or 3 if they were ballsy (but stupid) so that they would know enough to fake it for the final exam/torture!
Sometimes I’m more interested in what has happened and how it has shaped various churches *before* I start to do any *discerning* of whether some thing is scriptural or not.
What I am *sure* is scriptural is that the church is the bride of Christ and he is the one able to keep us and bring us into his perfect will.

I would look at the “keys to the kingdom” of Matthew 18: 18 as having been given to All Believers, not just leadership!
First, that is antinomianism, which Scripture explicitly condemns (Romans 6:1-2, 1 John 3:6-9).
Second, Peter is a very poor test case to use. For example, when he denied Christ he did so out of fear, not disbelief or willful rebellion.
Third, what does the King himself say?

Peter is a poor test case you say. So you say. Jesus told him he would deny him before he actually did it, yet, he remained within the family and served.

I am not arguing one way or the other, just presenting a situation I know of and some thoughts.
I know someone whom I would call a “seeker.” He grew up in the Catholic church, explored Eastern religions, then found God and was baptized and practiced his faith. Then he fell away. He seemed to lose faith altogether and began seeking again, exploring a number of other religions.
I find it hard to believe that someone who renounces Christianity, having once embraced it, would be “saved.” It doesn’t make sense to me, but I am not the judge of these matters.
In the end, he came back to Christianity, renounced all he did in the meantime, and has been living according to the faith for a number of years. I believe God is merciful and welcomes people as in the parable of the Prodigal Son, but I don’t know how my friend would have fared if he had kept denouncing God.
My son’s Respite Care Worker comes from a Muslim family. He also has a grandmother who was a Christian evangelist who even had a radio show at one time. Someone in that family chose to walk away from Christ actively & become a Muslim instead. It is incomprehensible to me that someone could know Jesus as Lord & savior but then just decide that He was only a good teacher & not actually God.
Similarly I recall that Dr. Laura Schlesinger was raised in some type of Christian faith, possibly RC, but she “converted” to Judaism. I can understand a Christian being drawn to Jewish roots of the faith & choosing Messianic Judaism perhaps, but to outright reject Jesus as Savior, Lord, God, & Messiah–Inconceivable!
And many go to outright atheism. (I am not one of those BTW.) I’ve watched many a “deconversion” story. In many cases it’s a very painful process and people who go through it actively warn still-Christians (during discussions) to the effect of “I can demonstrate what I just said, but if you follow this link you might lose your faith.” They don’t wish that pain that they went through, on others. [If somehow you were to deconvert, I guarantee you would lose most of your current friends. You might end up estranged from your family; you’d almost certainly lose at least one. You might end up divorced. NOT good, no fun at all. You find out what it’s like to be an atheist in this culture.]
What happens in these cases is people start asking questions, oftentimes hoping to deepen their faith, and find themselves unsatisfied by the answers…and one day they realize they can’t believe it’s real any more. Not believing it’s real any more is why they walked away (as hard as it may be for you to wrap your mind around that concept).
So this would imply that you, even as an Atheist, don’t believe in “once saved always saved”…how ironic!

Not sure how once saved always saved applies to atheism; in fact “saved” isn’t even a sensible concept from where I stand, there’s nothing to be “saved” from. In other words I have no idea what you mean by that first paragraph.
Losing friends and family is only part of the pain; having your whole world view turned upside down is NOT easy. Watching former flerfer Jeran is a case study of this. (He has lost many friends, and he’s had to go through the pain of realizing he fought for ten years for something he now cannot believe.)

Well I guess you didn’t read the Entire conversational thread because I opened it by mentioning “once saved always saved” & how I didn’t believe the concept was actually scriptural, having pulled a quote from Carl’s original post to comment upon.
The Christian concept of salvation would be to be “saved” from your sins & from the punishment for sin & eternal damnation for those who are not under the Blood of Jesus.
In scripture Jesus is described as the Lamb of God slain from the foundation of the world. in the Fall of Man, eating the Forbidden Fruit has brought about Death (eventually physically & immediately spiritually, I believe) & permanent separation from God, who had walked in The Garden & talked with Adam & Eve before The Fall.
Anyway God knew that sin would come into the world & that death that would follow. He also knew that Man would never be able to live up to God’s requirements to be redeemed from sin., which is why Jesus was always going to be the Perfect Sacrifice, the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world.
All are born into sin, Original Sin, that which we inherited from Adam. None of us are capable of living up to God’s standards nor can we attain His Presence Eternally on our own. However Jesus, the Perfect Sacrifice, paid the price for all sin for all time so all any of us need to do is receive that Free Gift of Salvation to be Born Again & Saved from Sin, Death, Hell, & the Grave…
All of the Jewish law was a foreshadowing that was & is fulfilled in Christ. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed. We become a “new creation” upon accepting Christ, old things have passed away & all things are made new. We are saved from sin, from our sinful nature having full control, saved from being eternally separated from God, Who Is Love, & Who has prepared a place for us with Him in Heaven eternally…

No. From my point of view the salvation isn’t real and never was. And that’s also the point of view of those former Christians.
Once they deconvert, they don’t believe there was ever actually anything for them to lose. Ask them and they will tell you that although they once thought they were saved, they now don’t believe there was anything to be saved from.
You seem to be unable to understand that in an atheist’s mind salvation doesn’t exist. You can’t lose it, because you never had it; you can’t retain it, because you never had it, because it does not exist.
What happens when a Christian loses their faith is that whereas before they thought they were saved, afterwards they realized that in fact they never were saved because the concept is nonsense to them now. They don’t look on it as losing their salvation, they look on it as losing the illusion of salvation.
They don’t lose it. They never had it because it never existed.
I know that to you it looks like they lost it. Which is fine, but you can’t claim my position is in agreement with yours when my position rejects your position’s premise.
At the risk of coming across as trivializing your beliefs, let me try an analogy–to try to illustrate the issue here.
Victora and Frank belong to some weirdass cult that believes in boojums. But Victoria belongs to a sect that insists they’re green, while Frank’s sect believes they are red.
Sam doesn’t believe in the boojums at all so he’s happy to tell Victoria he doesn’t believe in red boojums.
Victoria is NOT entitled to say that Sam agrees that boojums are green or even that boojums are not red; Sam doesn’t believe there are any boojums to argue about the color of at all.
I guess that’s why “deconversion” is in quotation marks.

Well…if there were no God, the term “sin” would become meaningless (unless repurposed). If there’s no God (who after all had to have created Hell), there’s no judge to send you to Hell (or not, if saved). There’s no Hell. There’s no Heaven. There’s no Satan. There is the world you see around us, and that’s it.
It’s not JUST not believing in God, it’s not believing ANY of that exists. (There are outlier atheists; we aren’t all the same by ANY means…I am talking about the most common case.)
Most (but not all) atheists don’t believe there’s any sort of afterlife at all. Therefore none of these other concepts makes any sense; they also don’t make sense if there is no God.
(Oh if I wanted to get creative I could gin up some sort of weird doctrine where there’s a Hell but without a God, And if I can imagine that, maybe there’s some atheist who believes that too. But I’ve never heard of it.)
Most atheists are naturalists of some sort or another and would maintain that nothing supernatural exists.
And yes you will see many atheists who insist religion is all about social control, and that’s why it was invented. I’m not quite that cynical; I do think we’re predisposed to see agency in natural phenomena, since that could have survival value out in the wild (see grass stirring, assume it’s a leopard, not just the wind–the common example). So it’s not deliberately evil, but every religion IS man made.
It’s interesting but in the course of many of our (collective, not just you & me) Q-Tree conversations it seems that you have some grasp of “good” versus “evil” but maybe I’m misremembering or perhaps you are using common parlance since this is a Judeo Christian country & those concepts prevail.
Without God as a source of good (and evil since He is the Creator of All) in some ways why should you care what the dems do or whether “evil” gets away with it?
If this life is all there is you should seek your highest comfort & pleasure & not give a fig about anyone else unless you choose to care about them for some reason.

THAT is a complicated topic and I part company with most atheists on it.
Most atheists will accept a set of ethical rules that lets society function, but since those rules weren’t handed down on tablets, there’s some flexibility in defining them (so long as they still “work” well enough that society doesn’t extinguish itself…e.g., if you don’t forbid murder your society will fail). They will also insist on calling ethics/morality “subjective.”
My approach is much closer to Ayn Rand’s. She asks, not “what code of morality should we have” but rather, “do we need a code of morality and if so why?” (This is honestly something that should be written in a post…or a series of them. So I’m going to skip over quite a lot.) Once she determines the reason we need a moral code, she can reason herself to the sort of moral code that fulfills the need, and it’s not a subjective decision, it follows directly from the nature of man and the reason man needs a moral code. (And she can go from there to defining the proper role of government, and the proper economic system, which is where my politics comes from.)
I do think there’s such a thing as evil, but (and I have to explain this to many “typical” atheists” I am not personifying it, or treating it as some sort of natural or mystical force; it’s simply those actions that violate the objective moral code; it can also be applied as an adjective to people who consistently do so.

I hope you do at some point. I can imagine you giving us a very solid historical journey through various forms of human government &/or moral systems & why they were successful or failures. It would be fascinating!
You might find it interesting, but a significant number of people here would HATE it, because I’d be explicitly denying morality comes from God, and many Christians insist that it can ONLY come from God. (Which by the way is them telling me I’m immoral by definition.)
I would then be piled-onto in the comments and still be answering them three days later.

I’m currently reading a book about Viking culture & the author takes pains to separate the pre-Christian pagan forms to the post-Christian amalgamated forms. The author is female & also takes pains to rather “invent” or discover a feminist viewpoint, imagining perspectives & processes that do not really grow out of the scant evidence, rather unscientifically it would seem.
I was telling my husband, badly, about how I could rather relate to her perspective in that when I was much younger I used to get so frustrated by the scriptures (& preaching) that seemed to mostly be about & directed toward men & where women & girls were seemingly very much of an after thought. That Viking book authoress is also wrestling with most of the written & archeological cultural evidence centering around men. It can be quite challenging to be “unseen”…as perhaps you, as an Atheist, might feel in a predominantly Christian society…

I had a similar experience many years ago talking to a Christian; to draw an analogy, I sort of imagined Christianity as being (say) a Ming vase (the natural world) with a plastic leprechaun (God) glued onto it. Why do these Christians insist on gluing this totally unnecessary leprechaun onto the vase? I had to invert my mental picture to (hopefully) see it a little more like the Christian to think of the universe as springing from or maybe even being something that branched off from God. God is the vase, the leprechaun is replaced by a handle that is part of the vase…and fits with it. Many faults with it but I was realizing I wasn’t dealing with a paradigm like mine but with extra stuff on it, but rather, a totally different way of looking at the world.

I would guess that at least 90% of the time, they are unsatisfied by the answers because of all the lies and BS of false doctrines they have been taught, which cannot be reconciled with Scripture.
I don’t point this out all the time for no reason.
Doctrines, commandments and traditions of men have practically supplanted Biblical Christianity in many modern churches.
If one of those church members goes looking for answers, to deepen their faith, they are going to discover that a LOT of stuff they do, practice or believe cannot be reconciled with Scripture.
That’s not God’s fault. That’s not Christianity’s fault.
That’s the fault of MEN, false teachers, including many who don’t even realize they are false teachers.
And when their followers realize they’ve been lied to, they become disillusioned.
And if they look around, they see that most other churches are no different.
It is easy to conclude that it’s all a fraud.
They didn’t look long enough, or closely enough, to find the church that ONLY follows Scripture, to the very intentional exclusion of anything else.
You won’t find members of those churches becoming disillusioned or falling away because they discover that their church isn’t doing exactly what God’s Word says.
They may get discouraged by other things going on in the congregation, e.g. personal disputes (which ought not to happen), but it won’t be for lack of following the Scriptures.
The only way someone who is a member of a church that actually follows the Scriptures (and nothing else) is going realize what they believe is not real anymore, is if someone succeeds in breaking the Scriptures.
So far, that hasn’t happened.
The best chance of doing so will be with A.I.
I don’t think A.I. stands a chance, if it is honest.
If A.I. just takes the route that detractors take, and point out inconsistencies which, with further study and understanding of historical and cultural context, are not actually inconsistencies at all, then it will be nothing more than Christian criticism on steroids.
But if the A.I. understands how to reconcile what on the surface appear to be inconsistencies (the kinds of things people who have no understanding of the Scriptures always raise), then we will see if the A.I. can find any real and genuine inconsistency or contradiction.

Here’s an update on my mom, who’s been having some neurological issues that have increased of late.
They saw Mom’s neurologist for about an hour on Friday. He went over recent MRI scan info compared to 2 years ago. She had some spots on the former MRI that have solidified. There are also several places where there are “holes” in her brain matter, presumably fluid filled. They don’t want to invade the skull yet but plan a spinal tap later.
The doc is putting her on more intense steroids, 60mg for the first month, 40mg for the second month, & 20mg for the third month. This course is supposed to have some positive effects including reducing the “excess” fluid I think. Then they’ll get another MRI.
She’s supposed to take the anti-seizure med that was formerly prescribed, at least half the possible dose, to help counteract what is apparently like sub-clinical seizures. I mentioned before about her saying that she felt a pulling inside her fingertips & the doc said this was indicating seizure like activity going on. At the full dose she sleeps many hours of the day which isn’t preferable.
Mom was able to attend a local ladies Bible Study the last couple weeks. They also made it to their church last weekend for the first time in 2025. She enjoys the fellowship
There is the possibility that the brain/neuro issues can resolve to some degree per the doc. I sure would appreciate prayers for Mom in her healing & Dad in his caregiving.

If SS taxation was left alone as intended when enacted, it would have long since reduced the rate of taxation and have sufficient funds to handle its responsibilities to the retirees and employers who paid into the system for at least 100 years. They commingled the funding into the general treasury to give the appearance of being near a balanced budget, which they do not even pretend to do a budget anymore or hide the deficit spending.
Term limits, balanced budget amendment, kill the Fed, kill the income taxes. Most of the problems will be generally solved.

An armed adult man was shot by US Secret Service personnel on Sunday morning outside the White House, the agency announced shortly after the incident.
President Donald Trump was not at the White House Sunday morning.
According to Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi, USSS received information about a “suicidal individual” who was traveling to DC from Indiana. Guglielmi said in a statement that USSS members saw a person matching the description near the White House and found their parked car.
“As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel,” Guglielmi said.
The person was taken to the hospital, and his condition remains unknown.
The US Secret Service said there were no injuries to members of their personnel.
DC Metropolitan Police’s Internal Affairs Division Force Investigations Team will lead the investigation into the incident, Guglielmi said, as they are the primary agency responsible for officer involved shootings in the District of Columbia.
CNN has reached out to the DC Metropolitan Police Department for comment.

I am on a hot date tonight with a saucy little wench named ‘Advil’.
As I have said far too many times, I own a 1994 Honda Accord Wagon. Part of the reason I am so attached to it is that, by and large, I understand it. We’ve been through nearly a third of a million miles together, and I know how the knee-bone connects to the thigh-bone.
That said, there are a couple of very questionable design decisions made with this vehicle. One is the fuel filter mounted under the master brake cylinder that requires disconnection from both the bottom and the top and accessing a mounting bracket against the firewall.
Another is the main wire harness coming from the engine that goes through the firewall right under where the windshield drains when it rains. There’s an old-school rubber gasket there, which on my car is 30 years young…..which means the passenger floor gets wet when it rains. Everyone and their brother knows the obvious kludge — caulk it, right over the old gasket.
Took it apart a couple of days ago, put the caulk today and reassembled it. Only problem was working upside down — which would have been trivial about 20 years and/or 70 pounds ago. Plus working in a mirror — if I had been good at that, I could’ve been a dentist.
I’m expecting her to get into my muscles and ease their aches Any. Time. Now…..
My hubby can barely do anything under a car any more due to bad vertigo. Unfortunately one of the bearings he recently replaced in the ABS has gone bad again (cheap Chyneze metal maybe?) so he’s gearing up to tear into it in our backyard this week. Last time he was able to sit up to do much of the work which helped Mightily…we’ll see…

Interesting. For 40-50 years I’ve had vertigo thst leads to nausea within 15-20 seconds if I slide under a car on a creeper.
Wow, sorry. For Hubby it involves laying on his back & cutting his eyes up & to one particular side. He also has issues when he sits up to get out of bed, but it usually resolves in about a minute.
He’s aware of some vertigo exercises that can reduce the problem but they are a pain to do because you basically have to keep inducing the vertigo a bit to help yourself get past it, or maybe get used to it…
There are also certain therapies you can get for the inner ear, but those cost money. You might look into it to see if something might help you out though

What’s that? It’s not Benign Paroximal Vertigo, which is something certain doctors speculated that my son Josiah had. He used to have Major sensory issues, partially autism related. He could spin all day on a horizontal axis w/out probs but try to spin him around the vertical & he’d get dizzy, queasy, & even throw up. Of course he threw up multiple times for other sensory stuff too–fun times NOT!
I don’t know what the letters stand for but it has something to do with tiny crystals or rocks in the inner ear having broken loose from where they’re supposed to be and raising havoc when they move around.
At least that one has a cause. When your inner ear blows out for no reason they can detect, they call it Meniere’s disease. (Since they don’t know what causes any particular case of it, for all we know it’s five or six or a dozen different diseases all sitting in the same bucket until we learn to tell them apart.) THAT is what killed my flying, and I know different Meniere’s patients had very different experiences with it. Fortunately it hasn’t really bothered me much in years, but there’s always the chance I’ll have a drop attack out of the blue. Back when they were frequent I always had a second or two of warning but then many years after I thought it was all over, I had one without any warning at all that had me falling onto a table at a coin show. THAT was scary and I am always wondering when the next one will hit. It has been years; but it had been years that time, too. Just last night I had a very mild, momentary vertigo spell, about two seconds. Just to remind me I’ll never be completely out of those woods. (And just enough I don’t dare fly without another pilot.)

I think Trade Bait’s wife suffered from Meniere’s Disease & in some of his health posts he shared how she got some significant improvements, in case you didn’t see that before.
So cool that you are a pilot. That was one of my dreams that I never fulfilled…yet–ha!
The point is, “Meniere’s” is a bucket they throw you in if they don’t know what’s causing it.
It almost never impedes my life…awareness just hangs around in the back of my mind. But there were two or three years of *frequent* vertigo attacks of different severities; one time at work I took what I called a two hour “lost my lunch” break, camped out in a bathroom stall just in case I had to dry-heave again. It almost never really says “Knock knock, I haven’t gone away” except that my balance is not good, and I am deaf on that side. (I have a pair of headphones where the deaf side broke, and I never even realized it till I put them on backwards one day.)
It was horrible in the past, just a nagging worry today. But the hearing damage is permanent, the impaired balance is permanent. There’s really nothing to “prevent” now.

I’ve know people that were taught how to do the moves to fix when vestibular bones get crusty by their chiropractors. I know of one person that watched youtube videos to figure out how to do the moves.
That sounds kind of like what Hubby has heard of. Do you know what it’s called so one can search for such tutorials?

I wonder if you’ve ever enjoyed the book by Bart D Ehrman, ‘How Jesus Became God’. If not famous, this book is at least notorious, and an entertaining read. I listened to it on CD in the car! The author is the reader, and reads it very well.
This is meant to be a scholarly book but author Erhman incudes asides to share his personal journey. During this book the author reversed his lifelong Christian identity and “de-commissioned” and, he assumes, “de-converted”. He said he just didn’t believe it, the whole thing, anymore. Your explanation seems to match with Bart Ehren’s aside comments. And Steve, you are a Top Flight Explainer.

As for Ehrman, I have read that book as well as others. He wrote another titled “Did Jesus Exist?” in which he says, yes, and backs it op. (Christians won’t be satisfied, though, because according to Ehrman (and a lot of other scholars) the Jesus that existed was just another apocalyptic preacher (a dime a dozen back then), who got executed for claiming he was the king of the Jews…and just over the next couple of decades got Paul Bunyaned into the literal son of God–via the process described in “How Jesus Became God.”)
Ehrman says there that virtually every bible scholar, even secular ones (and there are quite a few secular ones) are pretty sure that at the very least some guy like this existed.
However the most woke atheists seem to think it’s a purity tests of some sort, and you have to believe not even that much of the Bible is true, so they push a position called “mythicism” stating that Jesus was completely made up. Ehrman started coming under attack from these people so “Did Jesus Exist” was his response.
He wrote more specifically about his deconversion process in “God’s Problem.”
A lot of his other books have covered the sorts of things uncovered by Bible scholarship over the past couple of centuries…things Fundamentalists cannot abide; but non-Fundamentalist scholars (many of them Christians, just not fundamentalists) find what Bart writes to be mainstream.
He IS popularizing a bit in these books. I read one of his more scholarly books (“The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture”–a title which rockets Fundamentalists into the ceiling) once and it was quite dense with footnotes, jargon, etc. That’s a real scholarly work.
Ehrman studied under Bruce Metzger probably the foremost biblical scholar in America at the time (again, outside of fundamentalist circles). Metzger contributed to the Revised Standard Version and led the NRSV committee. A very favored work of Metzger’s was “The Text of the New Testament” and for the fourth edition in 2005, Ehrman became co-author.
That long stream of posts by Valerie and you, and some others too, well it gave me a buzz! I learned a lot, certainly things were expressed more clearly than I could have done. Your patience held out until we understood what you were saying from the beginning. Congrats!
What impressed me most with ‘How Jesus Became God’ was Ehrman’s discussion of the ways societies in time and location have different baselines for What-God-Is.
