The most magnificent of all ancient #Roman ‘cage cups’ is the 4th c. CE Lycurgus Cup, made of dichroic glass. In normal light, the glass appears milky green, when backlit, it glows a ruby red. The effect was achieved by adding silver and gold nanoparticles to the glass.
When viewed in reflected light, as in this flash photograph, the cup’s dichroic glass is green in colour, whereas when viewed in transmitted light, the glass appears red.
Dichroism – literally “two colors” – can come from a variety of physical phenomena.

The first time I ever saw this, during high school, it was also red-green dichroism – from chlorophyll. Yes – a simple suspension of chlorophyll in aqueous alcohol looks vivid green, until a flashlight is shown directly into it, in which case it glows RED from fluorescence of the chlorophyll.
Many phenomena will give rise to dichroism, which can be of many different kinds and degrees. All that is needed is for there to be a change in the spectrum of light leaving an object, which somehow depends on the specifics of the illumination of the object. “Di-” is used loosely, in that dichroism can include two or more – and includes “tri-“, “quatra-“, and even “poly-“.
Even more confusing, dichroism can refer to different lights being shined ONTO something together.
Steve has mentioned circular polarization of light. This can be used to investigate stereochemistry (the “handedness” of molecules) using a phenomenon/technique called circular dichroism. A.k.a. CD.

To be almost too brief, CD is this. An equal mix of right-handed and left-handed light (thus dichroic) will notice the difference between right-handed and left-handed molecules, as well as the difference of either of these from unhanded molecules. CD can thus tell you about the handedness of a sample.
Note that an actual human heart is “handed”, but an idealized one is not.
So – “dichroism” is used two ways – for both (1) two (or more) kinds of light leaving an object, and (2) a sort of reverse scenario, in which two kinds of light impinge upon an object simultaneously. Wikipedia states it like this:
In optics, a dichroic material is either one which causes visible light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths (colours) (not to be confused with dispersion), or one in which light rays having different polarizations are absorbed by different amounts.[1]
So now let’s answer, very specifically, Valerie’s original question: how does the Lycurgus Cup work? Well, I found a great answer. I don’t regard this as “settled science” – but this is very likely close to the truth.

Here is the relevant part.
The dichroic effect is achieved by making the glass with tiny proportions of nanoparticles of gold and silver dispersed in colloidal form throughout the glass material. The process used remains unclear, and it is likely that it was not well understood or controlled by the makers, and was probably discovered by accidental “contamination” with minutely ground gold and silver dust. The glass-makers may not even have known that gold was involved, as the quantities involved are so tiny; they may have come from a small proportion of gold in any silver added (most Roman silver contains small proportions of gold), or from traces of gold or gold leaf left by accident in the workshop, as residue on tools, or from other work. The very few other surviving fragments of Roman dichroic glass vary considerably in their two colours.[7]
The glass
It is estimated that to a conventionally composed Roman glass flux 330 parts per million of silver and 40 of gold were added: “These particles were precipitated as colloids and form a silver-gold alloy. When viewed in reflected light the minute metallic particles are just coarse enough to reflect enough of the light without eliminating the transmission. In transmitted light the fine particles scatter the blue end of the spectrum more effectively than the red end, resulting in red transmission, and this is the colour observed. Since it is impossible that the Roman artisans managed to add these incredibly low levels of silver and gold to the volume of the glass used to make the vessel deliberately, the levels were probably added at higher levels to a larger volume of glass-melt, and increasingly diluted by adding more glass.”[8] The particles are only about 70 nanometers across,[9] and embedded in the glass, so they cannot be seen by optical microscopy, and a transmission electron microscope is needed instead.[10] At this size they approach the size of the wavelengths of visible light, and a surface plasmon resonance effect takes place.[11]
TL;DR – the highly dilute metal nanoparticles interact with visible light, scattering blue and transmitting red. The result is greenish reflection and reddish transmission.
One other thing.
Although I can’t get into the details, my early learning about dichroisim is connected to my knowledge of “occultish things in academic science”. Thus, I was immediately calling for backup by Suspicious Cat as soon as I knew we were talking about dichroic glass.
The fact that the artistic subject of the Lycurgus Cup is mythology about what Aubergine refers to as “the old gods” is just a hint of the attraction this stuff holds for the more idolatrous humans.

The early history of the cup is unknown, and it is first mentioned in print in 1845, when a French writer said he had seen it “some years ago, in the hands of M. Dubois”.[41] This is probably shortly before it was acquired by the Rothschild family.[42] Certainly Lionel de Rothschild owned it by 1857, when the touring Gustav Friedrich Waagen saw it in his collection and described it as “barbaric and debased”.[43] In 1862 Lionel lent it to an exhibition at what is now the Victoria and Albert Museum, after which it virtually fell from scholarly view until 1950. In 1958, Victor, Lord Rothschild sold it to the British Museum for £20,000, £2,000 of which was donated by the Art Fund (then the NACF).[44]
The cup forms part of the museum’s Department of Prehistory and Europe rather than the Greece and Rome Department, and was previously on display, lit from behind, in Room 50. In 2015 it was on display with the new display of the Rothschild donation of the Waddesdon Bequest in Room 2A, with a changing internal lighting source that shows the colour change very effectively, though only one side of the cup can be seen. By October 2015 it was back in the re-opened Room 41.
While Room 41, where it was then displayed, was closed for refurbishment, from November 2012 to August 2013 it was on display with other British Museum pieces at The Art Institute of Chicago‘s Jaharis Galleries of Greek, Roman and Byzantine Art,[45] where it was very effectively displayed in a free-standing case, lit from above with changing light so that the colour change was clearly visible.[46][47] It is considered able to travel to important exhibitions and in 2008 was exhibited in “Reflecting Antiquity, Modern Glass Inspired by Ancient Rome” at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, in 2003 at the Hayward Gallery in London in “‘Saved! 100 Years of the National Art Collections Fund”, and in 1987 in “Glass of the Caesars” in the British Museum, Cologne, Milan, and Rome.[48]
Oh, this fascination with dichroism doesn’t just start or end with the Roths.
Consider scarab beetles, many of which show dichroism due to nanostructural layering in their shell materials. Here is the rainbow scarab:
Interestingly, there is good evidence that such beetles, in which increasing color has to be balanced with decreases in structural strength, have undergone evolution of their shells primarily for color, rather than strength.

Another potential cause of such colors is constructive interference. For instance if a thin layer of tarnish forms on a silver coin–a very thin layer–it might look blue if the light hits it at the right angle. Some of the light reflects off the tarnish, some reflects off the silver; if the layer is of the right thickness blue light will constructively interfere while others will not. Rainbow toning happens when..due to an object that once covered part of the coin and protected it, the tarnish layer is of smoothly variable thickness.
This also happens with silica being “grown” on the face of a microchip silicon wafer.
These blending’s perhaps go back to the man himself. Lycurgus a Spartan king and law giver of questionable deeds and origins but too whom things are attributed too whether he was the originator of them or not. We mentioned the other day about iron ingots as being the basis of wealth in Ancient Sparta as a way to not hide ones wealth on account you needed so much of it to be wealthy and thus making it difficult to horde with out community scorn as became the Spartan way. This being but one thing attributed to him whether he was the originator of the idea or not and so it goes. We know of him mostly by Herodotus and Plutarch both, but apparently there are others. Generally things idyllic and more divine, those being the better qualities in governance that made Sparta stand above the rest are things he is claimed to have brought to Sparta.

I owned the Great Books library for some years but have since passed it on to my oldest child. It was another of my attempts to understand the world. I think I bought the series on the advice of Adler who was, I believe, the editor of the series. I recall his first name was Mortimer, but I could be wrong on that.

It is interesting that blockages in the heart arteries do not usually become symptomatic until the blockage is about 70%. I would think that most of us over 60 years have some blockage. In recent years critical blockages are treated with stents which has become a routine procedure for everyone but the patient. I hope and believe that whatever comes next will be successful and will improve the quality of your living. Even after years in the medical environment I have never found medical appointments anything but a necessary interruption on my enjoyment of life.

Having said that, many manufacturers have debug code/commands/circuits that make it into released code/hardware, either intentionally or not. HP had a (potentially) particularly nasty compiler option (if misused) that forced debug breakpoints to be processed sequentially for an ENTIRE SYSTEM rather than on a per user/session/job basis.

I think we were created as perfect, and fell. I don’t pretend to understand the particulars of “how” we fell; I see the Garden and the Serpent as allegorical, really. But I do believe in the battle between God and Satan, good and evil. And I think that “people of God” are the ones fighting both internal and external sin. While those who are not of God are susceptible to Satan’s ways, which includes corrupting children and sacrificing them. That is all over the Bible; Jesus himself addresses it with the millstone. And child sacrifice was practiced by the bad kings of the OT. I am currently reading my way through the OT, and it occurs over and over.

DC has had those votes since 1972 at least. And they are the reason no republican will ever win a unanimous Electoral College vote, since DC is 90 percent dem; so blue it’s ultraviolet.

A while back you mentioned cutting voltage to lights could make bulbs last longer. Can explain how people do this?
I use a dimmer to replace the snap switch at the wall (I have a huge hamster-kauf of incandescents) and just dim the lights a bit. Five percent doubles the life, ten percent IIRC is about ten times longer. Of course the bulb is less efficient, but it lasts a lot longer. “Extended life” bulbs are basically designed as 130v bulbs, for instance, although “Rugged Service” are probably a better idea if only extending time between bulb changes is what is needed.
For fluorescents and LEDs, there are special dimmers and ballasts, but I don’t think service life is extended that much, and there are other wear factors that are worse for these than for incandescents (e.g. number and frequency of power cycles).

That would work, except that dimmers produce a lot of noise in the home wiring to which I am sensitive. (Sadly, kitchen lighting wires lay neatly parallel to bedroom wires and seem to share the noise via induction.)
Most dimmers work through PWM, which means they turn full-on and full-off several times a second. I’m not sure that helps with bulb life, and the flicker can really annoy some people.

Yep. My son’s old laptop did that and it drove him up the wall. So far his MacBook doesn’t have that issue. Not sure if the new OLED screens are going to be a problem when the next gen comes out…

I’ve read that trailing-edge clipping is less of a problem, but I haven’t tried that type of dimmer… yet…..
For incandescents, at least, there are various types of dimmers, not just the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) types that give some people fits (cheap and not-so-cheerful dimming Laptop Screens). There are also filter circuits/modules that can be added to smooth the signal…
We use 10cm 100-watt bulbs over our kitchen table and dim them wayyyy down unless we need the light, but there is a bit of hum due to the dimmer. I’ve toyed with the idea of getting a more sophisticated dimmer, or the aforementioned smoothing module, but the irritation (for now) doesn’t justify the expense to replace it… I’d like to be able to dim the lights even further, at which point I’ll have to replace it… sigh…
It’s all but impossible to get incandescents over here, and LEDs are totally out of the question. The curly fluorescents have also been banned by the likes of von der Leyen as well… so my stash of incandescents is going to need to go on for a while…
There’s one fellow (audio engineer) who went to the trouble of using what amounts to mini variacs instead of phase-chopping (either front or back) dimmers… he does some other, erm, homebrew stuff that would probably not pass code inspection though…

A power engineer friend tested home line noise with/without it and said it’s doing some good. Originally designed to smooth out A/C motor power spikes I think.
Next door neighbor shares a drop from the same transformer and he’s got the older solar converters. Therefore the power coming into the house isn’t clean either.
For noise created by switching transformers (the wall warts used to charge/run lots of low power items) I’ve gone to using better quality UPS boxes whereever those are needed. The UPS boxes make the power cleaner than the Graham Stetzer devices (which are in some way like capacitors).
The KVAR will do PFC for reactive loads, but light bulbs (except for the cold inrush current) behave as resistive loads… PC power supplies, on the other hand, are reactive loads, but they’re supposed to have PFC already built in (at least over here). Sometimes I find the thought of getting “bonus watts” from the power company via an “uncorrected” power supply appealing, however
There are types of UPSs that do AC-DC-AC conversion, and, depending on the quality of components, put out really clean power, but that won’t help with dimming lamps… the phase chopping (leading or trailing) is going to be noisy unless some filtering is applied.
Edison’s bulbs did much better on pure DC, but that would be a pain to implement… Shades of the old Tesla AC versus Edison DC power distribution conflict….

Eggs the kind I like are almost $9 a doz but one can get eggs for $2.99 the lowest.
The price here has stabilized. he eggs are not always available. My husband goes several times a week to Kroger and anytime he sees the eggs we like he buys one doz.
We try to keep 3-4 doz eggs at home. My dog likes eggs and my husband eats eggs as snacks. Often I eat eggs for breakfast in addition to blue berries.

You might try using LibreOffice (which is free for Windows users) from https://www.libreoffice.org/ (also GIMP, from https://www.gimp.org/ ) which does things that Photoshop does but, alas, is laid out entirely different).
