Cruises with 3-5 thousand people cooped up on one boat with no escape….. easy for viruses to spread.
I’m not ever going on a cruise unless it’s a Christian tour of ancient sites or a Trump rally!
Seems like that whole ship should be quarantined for awhile.
I’ve never been on a cruise…mainly because I didn’t like the idea of being trapped on a big ship for days, with no way to escape.
I did a cruise with the Fiancee to Alaska out of San Francisco in 2016. She wanted to do it for quilting activities, and the cost of a single cabin was so close to the cost of a double cabin that she took me along. I spent most of the sailing days doing Continuing Professional Education for my CPA.
It has its oddities. Cruise operators have been very focused on norovirus, and there were hand sanitizer stations at every landing for every staircase, on the way into every food location, and at many other strategic locations (e.g. entry into gambling area). This does, however, highlight the necessity of such things when you’re going to be occupying a limited space with 4,000 strangers for two weeks.
Little things can remind you — we had to make an unscheduled stop to drop off a body. Still made it to the next port on time.

I actually love cruising, but will avoid them for now. Ships really are incubators for bugs. One time I caught whatever was going around on the ship…yeah, not fun.
Where have you gone?
One of the things we found appealing was that we live close to SF, so we drove our own car to the port with all our crud; and when we offloaded, we could haul everything back in our car. How did that work for you?
In the Caribbean, I’ve gone out of Miami and from St. Maarten. I’ve done St. John, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, St. Barts (great stories from that one), and on the last one, Roatan, Tulum, and someplace else. One of those, though, was a Windjammer. I had a blast on that one.
Then, I’ve done two to Alaska out of Seattle that was with a singles group. There’s goods and bads about that.
Getting there, the group arranged for transportation usually. Otherwise, taxis, etc. As for stuff…on Norweigan, they have a deal where you can stuff a bag with clothes and they’ll do the laundry for a minimal charge. I’ve taken advantage of that to keep the packing lighter. I’ve traveled enough that packing light is kind of what I do unless I’m going to my brother’s house in Hawaii.
For over thirty years I worked in the travel industry. Between that and the military I have pretty much covered every type of transportation out there to include more cruises than I could tolerate. Cruises were usually part of my job and not a fun part. I did not like being part of a “captured audience”.
I have told my husband for years that a 4000 passenger cruise ship was a huge target for terrorist. Now it could well be Biological. While reading about the two ships being held in port I noticed mention of the fact that the one passenger who originated the virus had boarded the ship in one port and departed from another port. This is one of the flags that went up after 911. One way travel.
One week after 911 I had to travel to a cruise port on a one way ticket on Southwest and later another one way ticket on Delta out of Atlanta. Guess who got hand picked and thrown into a room with approximately 50 middle easterners along with our luggage? Yeah, the blonde American. I spent a couple of hours there until they decided I was safe. ( had cleared my husbands highest security clearance so I was good). But still…
The wife and I have taken 3 cruises.
1 out of New York, 5 Caribbean Islands, to Aruba and back to Ft Lauderdale Fl.
Another around the Eastern Caribbean.
The latest to Cozumel and Progresso Mexico.
All were Great with no problems.
I adore cruising! If I had the $$$, I would definitely do a ‘round the world one (slightly over 100 days….I know many who have and one couple that do it every year!
It’s a pretty nice lifestyle…undoubtedly the closest many of us will ever get to living like the uber wealthy or royalty. I could certainly get used to having my living quarters and bathroom cleaned everyday with fresh linens!
One of the women I workout with is scheduled for a cruise in a couple of weeks….I would be having a few second thoughts at this point.
Speaking of cruises – I frequent a used book store that swaps used hard/paperback books and in one book I found a cruise cafe ticket for coffee from a local lady. Curious, I wondered who liked the same author enough to take along on a cruise – so I searched her name.
Turns out, she’s well known in our community and her sought after recipe for cheese crackers was published by a local columnist in a regional city magazine.
Here it is! Sounds so good!
Crispy Cheesy Southern Cheese Crackers
Ingredients:
1 lb. extra sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1 stick cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes.
2 cups all-purpose flour, King Arthur’s Measure for Measure Gluten-Free Flour can be substituted
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon kosher salt
2-3 dashes of hot sauce
6-8 Tbsp heavy cream
Directions:
Add the flour, salt, and cayenne pepper to a food processor. Pulse several times to mix. Add butter and hot sauce. Run processor for about 10 seconds until the mixture is the consistency of coarse meal.
Add the shredded cheese and pulse until it is mixed. If you have a small food processor, you may have to divide the mixture into two smaller batches.
Add the cream by the tablespoon until the mixture starts to pull away from the sides of the processor. It should take 3 to 4 tablespoons of cream if you had to divide the mixture or 6-8 tablespoons for the full batch.
Next, turn the mixture out onto a clean surface and press into a ball. The mixture may still be crumbly. Cut the ball in half, and shape each half into a log. It helps when shaping the logs if you wrap the log in wax paper or parchment paper. If you had to divide the mixture up, you will have two balls. You should end up with four logs about 12 to 14 inches each. Wrap each log in plastic wrap and chill for several hours before you slice them.
When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Slice the logs as evenly and as thinly as possible and arrange the slices on the baking sheet. They will spread slightly so leave a little bit of room between each slice.
You can add a little extra salt on top, or add a little paprika for color. You could also prick the wafers with a fork to add some design if desired.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the slices are golden brown and crispy.
Notes:
If after baking, you have some thicker slices that aren’t crispy, put them back in the oven at 200 degrees for 30 minutes or longer, or until they crisp up.
The dough logs can be stored in the freezer, so you always have some on hand to bake up quickly whenever you need them.

“The penalties for violating the [National Labor Relations Act] are weaker than those for violating other labor and employment laws, and workers lack a private right of action to pursue relief on their own,” a Committee on Education and Labor fact sheet said. “Workers are frequently misclassified as independent contractors or supervisors, and thus excluded from the protections afforded to employees covered by the NLRA.”
Currently, illegal immigrants are not able to seek compensation from the NLRB if their rights are violated by their employers, which is something the bill aims to change along with attempting to allow illegal immigrants to be able to seek damages if they are wrongfully terminated.
The Federation for American Immigration Reform released a statement warning that this bill could prevent employers from firing an employee who is in the country illegally.
“In addition to owing back pay and other damages from so-called unfair labor practices, the PRO Act subjects employers to civil penalties of up to $100,000,” the statement read. “Under this bill, if an employer makes the admirable decision of firing an illegal worker to hire an American instead, they could face an unfair labor practice charge alleging that the illegal alien was fired for union status rather than being here illegally. This is not right.”
Oklahoma Republican Kevin Hern objected to the bill, specifically the power it would give to unions.
“Where workers have previously had the freedom to choose whether or not to pay fees and join a union, they will now be forced to pay membership fees or lose their job,” he said. “This will put immeasurable power in the hands of union bosses.”
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka expressed support for the bill and warned lawmakers who oppose it that they won’t have the support of the labor movement going forward.

It’s a very great pity and damned insulting how Hollywood portrayed VMA-214 in that show. As one member of the squadron said, the only two things that were accurate about it was that it was named the “Black Sheep” squadron and it’s CO was Boyington. In fact, the New Mexico Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the state’s ERA requires taxpayer funding of abortion! We must STOP this madness to protect the lives of unborn babies across America.
When Congress was debating the amendment when it was proposed back in the 1970s, pro-abortion members of Congress rejected efforts to make the amendment abortion-neutral.
If you think it’s strange that we’re talking about an amendment that Congress considered in the 70’s, you’re not alone.
Over four decades ago, Congress passed the ERA and sent it to the states for ratification. But not enough states ratified the ERA, the deadline passed, and the amendment died.
Even the Department of Justice issued a memo on the ERA, saying that it is in fact dead, and cannot be ratified retroactively.

The stress upon the dog’s joints and feet is unconscionable and it’s VERY possible the dog could injure itself doing this and the owner wouldn’t know (he’d just think the dog was unable to get the ball for some reason when he knew the dog could). Some breeds will literally run themselves to death if allowed to. For example, it’s well known (by some) that Pointer’s will NOT stop chasing quail or pheasants and will run themselves into heat exhaustion if allowed to do so. I’ve seen it firsthand and it’s a MOST upsetting thing to witness. I kept warning that jackass to kennel his dog but his bloodlust was up and we were in a mess of birds. I quit the hunt and and walked all the way back to the ranch house. An hour later jackass comes rushing in, his dog in distress. He was fucking lucky. I already had bags of ice ready and we were able to save that dog. It was very touch and go there for a bit, lemme tell you.
Did not know that, but makes sense.
I learned to call our dog off squirrels very quickly b/c they will troll dogs into trying to make 90-degree turns they can’t physically make. The sight of a dog stumbling on THREE sprained legs was pretty horrifying.
Dogs have a bare-bones operating system. They smarten up real nice, but the naked OS has all kinds of weaknesses.
