Hope the growth rate continues to drop and goes well below 20% quickly so our total cases grow even slower.
The slower they grow the the more cases will resolved as new cases are diagnosed – beds from previous cases are freed for the new cases as we get larger #s at once.
Even as % lessens, the actual #s of new cases will still be significant as % of large #s.
Expected “surge” in health care is still expected several weeks from now. Even with lower growth rates, the numbers are already large enough and the hospital stays tend to be long that the hospitals will continue to fill for a little while.

Yes, if HQ starts being used for a majority of cases, hospital stays should go way down. And maybe many people won’t need to be hospitalized at all. That would be the best case scenario.

BUT looking at number of cases is a waste of time, because it’s going to grow simply because we are testing more people. Even if no one ever caught it again, the number would grow. So–looking at confirmed cases doesn’t demonstrate the disease is still spreading, even if the count is increasing.
(On the other hand, if the number doesn’t grow (or barely grows) even though the number of tests administered is skyrocketing, that’s good news.)
(On the other hand if your goal is to demonstrate that more people have caught this than the H1N1 flu, that’s a different matter.)

the only way to treat it is to quarantine and hospitalize…the only way to know who to hospitalize is to test for it….the more ppl who are tested positive for it, the more cases actually recorded and reported….

We can hope that will be true again today…that the curve/spike of the disease is being blunted.
Deaths due to WuFlu are still due to WuFlu even if the person had an underlying medical condition because in most cases the person would be alive today if not for WuFlu.
Some are Very sickly and may/may not be alive today…Most would be alive.
When we hear underlying condition, we oughtn’t picture someone who is already laying in a hospital bed or a nursing home bed, pale, frail, sickly, hooked on an IV surrounded by family and about to pass.

When we hear underlying condition, we ought to picture the people we know who take a pill to control Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and other conditions but are mostly leading normal lives. People who are obese, have had heart surgery but are working full time or otherwise leading active lives have an underlying condition. 60+% of America has a Known Underlying condition!
The more one underlying conditions, the worse the condition (out of control diabetes even with meds, for example) or the worse undying condition (past/recent/ongoing lung cancer would be a worse underlying condition for WuFlu!) the chances of complications and death still vary.
Dr. Fauci said at a press conference (I do not remember which one at this point) that mere age was a factor, even if no other underlying conditions, as our immune system simply is less effective the older we are. Plus, most of us past 50 yrs old (and many under 50 yrs old) have at least 1 underlying conditions of some sort.
Why do I point this out? Because many are finding false comfort by dismissing the deaths that come with the explainer of “patient had underlying conditions” and because many think the threat is therefore not as widespread as it is. Plus, for those who have Zero underlying conditions and never catch WuFlu – if the hospitals become overwhelmed, every patient admitted for Any reason (car accidents, for example) is at a much greater risk.
I am not trying to spread fear nor am I saying that any particular person has been dismissive or is not taking this seriously. This is not aimed at one particular person.
It is a response here because I have seen this as a Common Response from Many and just food for thought so we aren’t surprised by developments, aren’t confused as to why President Trump &/or state govs take strong steps to slow the spread, receive or want to share misleading/false info that this is not that big of deal and so that no one takes inappropriate risks based on false perception.

2. There are daily flights from Wuhan to San Francisco and NYC so there was at least two months during which the Wuhan flu could hitch a ride to the USA

Even now we have ZERO idea of how many are infected in the China Towns across the country or within the homeless population or within the illegal population. Unless people have very specific symptoms that do not show until AFTER they are contagious, testing is STILL not done. (Asymptomatic carriers have proved to be ‘Typhoid Marys’.)
IF CDC was actually doing their job, they would have had decent tests by early February. They would have done a random sampling of the homeless population, the Chinese population, and the international travelers who were in Wuhan over the last few months IN EACH CITY especially San Francisco and NYC. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has complete records of the entry and exit of persons arriving and departing by air or sea so the data was available.
The minimum sample size in my field is 30 samples but I would imagine you would want ~100 samples minimum from each of the groups I just named to have an idea of what was happening.
The CDC has more than 14,000 employees (Around the world 🤔 ) You could think SOME of them could have been sent off to check for disease in our cities INSTEAD of in far-off-landia!

Yes! I think there is intriguing potential to find the WuFlu initial breakout hiding in the negatives returns of flu results – esp. Dec, Jan & Feb.
I have been learning about the methodologies of Flu stats and have seen that there are a significant number of negative flu tests but obviously the patients were presenting with flu like symptoms or tests would not have been ordered.
I have not had time to look up past year’s % of negative flu tests and see if this year’s % were higher which would indicate a new, underling cause for an upswing in % of negative flu tests.

Just as I have been saying, we ALL got it earlier, because it was HERE earlier, and either MISDIAGNOSED, and marked as regular flu, including the DEATHS, OR it was NOT tested because people with MILD symptoms thought they had the REGULAR flu or something else! We are confusing the ACTUAL amount with the MEASURED amount.
Here’s an analogy. If no traffic tickets are issued for speeding, does that mean NO ONE is actually speeding? It could just be that the cops are off eating donuts. Or is it the fact that people are speeding, but there just aren’t enough cops to catch them all?
Back a little closer to realityu, cops do issue speeding tickets. We all know that doubling the number of cops on patrol would probably double the number of speeding tickets issued. But that wouldn’t mean suddenly twice the number of people are speeding.
Since we’re administering the test more and more rapidly to wider and wider circles of people, we will find cases we simply didn’t know were there, even if no one new is catching the disease.
Don’t get me wrong, we want to test as many people as possible for the reasons you gave!
But it’s the very existence of the stealth cases, and the fact that we uncover more of them, that means we can’t conclude that a 200% jump in the number of people tested positive necessarily means a 200% jump in actual cases–if we’ve tested TEN TIMES as many people as before. Many of those cases were around before the jump in testing and are only now becoming visible. (Those aren’t actual numbers; I made them up to illustrate my point.)
This is why all along I’ve hammered on the number of people hospitalized for COVID. By now we’re testing anyone who gets hospitalized with symptoms even remotely like COVID (this was not true as recently as February 27), and it’s a MUCH smaller group of people than the-entire-population-of-the-US. It’s much more likely that this number is some reasonably constant proportion of the entire group of people who have it, and we can therefore use it to see trends, and see where this disease is going. Are our hospitals going to be overwhelmed? Look at the growth rate in hospitalizations!
That renders all the arguing over what the actual death rate from the disease actually is, completely moot, and lets us focus on the number that makes this a potential crisis, rather than just a seasonal bug of some sort.
I am of course assuming honest reporting for hospitalized cases; people are now calling New York into question on this as was the case for Wuhan.
Increased testing has lead to confirming more cases … but the “widespread” testing is not as widespread as we may have thought. Testing in most locations still requires that the person wanting to be tested clinically present with a list of symptoms, including fever, coughing, etc. Even medical workers are not being tested at will but only after presenting with symptoms.
Our current case #s do not reflect (for the most part) those who do not have symptoms or who have very mild symptoms (no fever, for example). Most who receive a test have most/all of the checklist of symptoms but more are now being tested prior to hospitalizations with severe symptoms.
Medical workers, patients hospitalized with a partial list of symptoms (see Kathy Griffins childish drama at not getting a test because she didn’t match the full list of symptoms), those who drive up/walk in without the full list of symptoms…many are not being tested at will or unless deemed appropriate.
So increase due to more testing but still not reflecting the majority of those infected and increases are (mostly) of those who are ill with WuFlu not just infected with WuFlu.
(some are tested due to known exposure to family members and situations like babies born to others with WuFlu)
Not testing medical personal is not only foolish it is CRIMINAL. Either they self quarantine for 14 days when we NEED every hand on board. OR they are carriers infecting others.
The 600 cops in NJ with the Wu-Flu are an excellent example of the problem.
I think some are testing and quarantining when their is known exposure without personal protective gear. But other medical personnel are becoming infected with personal protective gear through the course of their work but are not all being tested on a routine basis or even not until they have met the list of criteria of clinal symptoms to be tested.
Yes, the high infection rate of NJ PD shows the dangers of high infection rates even without high death rates and/or high rates of hospitalizations. High #s of people being sick all at once would impact necessary services.

I have a speed queen washer and dryer. Made in the USA
I have a fan and a toaster that are older than I am and my sewing machine was made in the early 1950s. I also have a chandelier that was gas and converted to electric that is probably 100 years old or more. All are in every day use.
I HATE the Chinese crap. We have several water hydrants we have to dig out and replace. The first couple were made in the USA and still work fine. The newer made in China are pure crap!
I also noticed my 16 ft hog panels from 20+ years ago are much heavier gage than the ones I bought recently at four times the price.
My parents bought their first refrigerator/freezer in 1968, a Frigidaire. It eventually was moved to a storage closet for back-up use, but that thing ran without any maintenance (that I’m aware of) until about 2008.
It was the freezer that taught me it was a bad idea to put your tongue on freezing cold metal (the freezer swing-out basket) or it will get stuck, when I was about 4 or 5 years old.
They told me not to do it.
Which was probably 90% of the reason why I did it. I probably would never have even thought of it otherwise.
But once the idea was planted, I just had to know 😁
My first one was an Amana. It was incredible in comparison to the garbage of today. It had a temp probe, cooked evenly and didn’t petrify foods unless I somehow got stupid.
The first house I bought in 2001 or so had a microwave from the late ’70’s that came with the house. Worked like a champ up until we got rid of it because the ex gf thought we needed to upgrade to a modern stainless finish one. The old one worked way better!
Read this comment and went down stairs to check the name of my microwave we pulled out of the shed. The nice one above the stove quit after 2 yrs. Yep. Sharp and it might very well be 40yrs old.
Can we ship them back their masks?

I just read that some stores ((Hobby Lobby or ??) are giving out free supplies to make your own mask. Don’t know how effective, but it’s good PR and can’t hurt.
If I were to make a cloth mask I would insert one of those “thin pads” (mensural) as a filter. The good part is that it can be replaced as often as you want, and I think would be especially beneficial for reusing masks.
Probably TMI, but I’ve used those for years when actively hiking for long periods and very limited backpack space, no ability to launder…and travel in general. Outside the box and all that.
Hubby went to our local Publix yesterday and reported more empty shelves than previous and, for the first time, saw a handful wearing masks, but mainly employees.
Cloth masks have their purposes. They may not be N95 effective but they do have greater marginal utility than none. If a filter can be added all the better.

Technically, you’re right. However, the labs that analyze blood tests would have to have a procedure set up to divert part of each sample to send to a DNA lab. There could be one in the same complex or it could be across the country. The skill set to do basic tests on blood is much less than the skill set needed for DNA analysis.

Depending on who your doctor is and where they do testing and how much anonymizing is done on your samples, you may already have given up DNA into some government system we know nothing about.

When Hubby earlier this week insisted we had to shop, I wore gloves. I came back to the truck, carefully removed the gloves and then out the truck window he squirted my hands with soapy water so I could wash them and then he squirted my hands with rinse water. After that I applied hand sanitizer. Only then did I open the truck door.
When I got home the shoes went into a Clorox bath in a large plastic (kitty litter) box I have sitting on the side porch. Clothes went directly into the wash and I went into the shower.
I just come home and get in a steam shower. It’s worked so far.
If you tried to get me to do even half of that, I’d say, “just shoot me”.

Remember just weeks ago when there were less than 1,000 cases nation wide and many could not understand the strong actions being taken? We KNOW the numbers are significantly lower than presented here, because of all the people who were not ever tested.
There is a huge difference between 1/2 and 1/1000.
We MIGHT know the number of deaths. The top number would be the numerator. Problem is, many of the dead are being attributed to Coronavirus and they may have other problems.
The denominator would be the total number of people with the virus, which NO COUNTRY has successfully calculated as yet, AND CANNOT POSSIBLY calculate as the virus is still spreading.
The number of people infected today (the denominator) will be different tomorrow.

Which hospitals have enough equipment and which ones do not?

We are adding a lock to our garage door & windows next weekend … just in case. Never even thought of locking garage. Also, moved a few important items from the garage into the house…just in case. Okay, so after watching Mass on EWTN, I took off in search of soy free eggs and a few other staples. Went to one of the local chains where the checkers are boxed in, there’s a padlock on the complimentary sani-wipes, and some stuff – like eggs – is being rationed, uh, limited. There was some TP available if you aren’t choosy. Got what I needed and headed to the other local chain.
Over at the other local chain store, things are far more relaxed. The plexiglass is just one sheet in front of the checker, they wipe down every hour, there is no rationing, and the bin of fresh, whole ginger was empty.
Imagine that.
Otherwise, it’s a beautiful day despite the wind and brisk temps compared to yesterday. The magnolias and Bradford pears are in bloom. People are out walking, and riding bikes if nothing else. It’s just more quiet than usual.

President Trump’s actions and recommendations are based on the trajectory of cases and the potential to overwhelm our healthcare system Not what the numbers are today. Today’s actions and recommendations are based on the projected number of cases in 3-7 weeks and coming months. Today’s #s are not final totals as are the H1N1 totals quoted above.
2) In April and May of 2009 in the US, we had “only” 113,690 confirmed cases and 3,433 deaths of confirmed cases of H1N1. (Only is in quotes because I am not saying that those people were not of consequence…any death is sad and all life is meaningful and matters.)
As of this minute, the US has 131,403 confirmed cases of WuFlu and it is still spreading/growing. Its trajectory for infected cases who are sick and need hospitalization is different than H1N1.
This is Much Bigger than H1N1 for our country. H1N1 was not as contagious, it did not have the same growth rate/spread, it did not have the same hospitalization rate or the same lengthy average hospital stay.
The “inflated” (I am not saying unjustifiably inflated) numbers in the meme refer to the Estimated totals which means the totals of confirmed cases + the Much Greater # of assumed but unconfirmed #s.
When we treat WuFlu the same way by inflating/adding in the # of estimated non symptomatic cases, mild cases and stay-at-home cases to the confirmed via testing #s only then are we comparing apples to apples with the above H1N1 #s.
Same with “seasonal”/regular flu #s. The majority of the #s are assumed/informed estimations with the confirmed through tests #s as the base.
We either compare confirmed cases to confirmed cases or the full estimated H1N1/flu/WuFlu burden to each other. But comparing the full estimation to the confirmed cases is incorrect.
Trust Trump. His Strong reaction and actions to the WuFlu are warranted. And the Tremendous potential impact of the existing drugs now being used “off label” can not be over emphasized – not just to the ill individuals but to the avoidance of the medical system issues and getting back to “normal” … but for now, President Trump’s strong actions and recommendations to slow the spread and prepare for the growing #s of cases are Very Warranted. Trust Trump!

The individual TN county health departments publish their own numbers on their own websites. The counties publish their numbers and get them to the state and then the state publishes a combined total. There is lag time between when the counties update their sites and when the state updates their daily #s with their 2 pm. (central) press less. The TN daily press release is not a live dashboard.
The same is true for the CDC numbers. Their official numbers lag behind the state numbers.
the same is true for the WHO numbers as they lag behind the various country’s updates.
That is why sites like worldometers has more cases listed than WHO, the CDC, etc. They are constantly updating from the sources v. collecting updates and releasing updates 1x per day. And yet worldometers numbers show up as the various updates propagate through the tracking systems.
Example: TN.gov has yet to update today (as of this comment) & they have shelby county as having 269 cases. Shelby County has posted 362 positive tests (as of right now)

So, yes, the stats that the news article is reporting are more accurate in that they are more up to date. If the TN health Dept. updated multiple times through the day, if they had each county dept. enter their data in to a live dashboard, then they would be up to date. But TN state health dept. is just updating once per day so those who take the initiative to call county departments &/or check their websites will be able to learn more up to date info than what is on the TN state site.

Then we started “15 days to slow the spread/flatten the curve” – but I didn’t think that was supposed to be “only” 15 days. Thought at 15 days guidelines would come out for various conditions – area hard it then 1 set of guidelines, few cases another set of guidelines.
However, as soon as he said he “hoped” it would be Easter I knew he was
1) turning the focus off of the end of the 15 days which is Monday (notice, No one has been talking about the end of the 15 days since he said Easter)
2) gently resetting our expectations
3) laying the ground work that it probably was going to be Easter…that was his “hope” if we all stayed home, meds worked instantly, etc. Easter was best case.
And now he has let us know it will be April 30….but he did say “at least” and “hope”. Nothing is set in stone because it is just unknown.
Remember the worst case scenarios are 10 weeks, 12 weeks, 4 – 6 months, etc.
But 30 days is a solid hope…and then gradually get back to normal depending on local conditions. But it is a hope – not a deadline or a promise. I am hopeful – esp. with meds showing so much promise and incredible results.
How well we slow the spread, how the meds start to work, etc. – just so many unknowns.

Yep, I’ve seen that attitude a bit here–it’s not universal by any means.
When I left the lobby of the post office (three people at a time, please!) I practically had to walk over people who were bunched up at the door.
At least, at Trader Joe’s, people stood in line a good 15 feet from the door, and 6-8 feet apart. And people left by a different door than they entered.
Why don’t they just give everyone the anti-malarial drug as a ‘prophylactic’, like you would if there was an outbreak of malaria (or as they would if you were traveling to someplace where malaria is prevalent), since the drug is apparently cheap, plentiful and effective — for both malaria AND Chinese virus?

The US is already a distancing culture. When I came here 1964 I was surprised how little handshaking there was specially between men and women .
I am astounded how small children are send to day care or kindergarten and school with an cold and cough.
I was a home stay mom and kept my kids home when sick for 2-3 days. They rested and I cooked special meals and yes took them to the doctor if they did not get better.
I do understand people cannot stay home with kids or when they are sick and go sick to work and send their kids sick to school.
Yes to your question people will be more distant and maybe slow down a little when sick stay home and keep kids home. Other people will now be aware when people are sick and not think of the community.I hope with this new reality of the China virus that we evaluate our values and the price we pay when both parents work and for that bigger house and latest car or big vacation or latest fashion.

We have a LOT of single mothers and a large number of single fathers….and way too many Grannies raising children in the USA.

Grandparents pitched in and friends were like family pitched in. At the time I grew up friends were close and one made easily friends who helped in need,
Times have changed values have changed. Even in Flushing NY neighborhood were like family.
It’s kind of funny. My grandfather’s Spanish aunts used to say that American mothers don’t kiss their children enough.
My mom stayed at home to raise kids for roughly 13 years. When my youngest brother went to school, she started subbing as a teacher and then went to work as a teacher’s aid until the twins were in high school. That way, there was nothing to bring home as far as teaching went. BUT, she and my dad needed that cash for private high school. All of us went to private HS. She didn’t start teaching full time again until my youngest brother was in fifth grade.
Like you, she kept us home when we were sick. We had to be fever free for 24 hours before going back to school.
Fortunately, for *most* of my childhood, my grandmother came over at least two days a week. It was a boon to have them so close, it turns out, but in our extended family, that’s just the way it was. My grandmother was EVERYBODY’s grandmother whether you were nieces and nephews or great-nieces and nephews, even some great-great nieces and nephews. She raised kids in the family born from 1957 until the late 80’s and my mother, her only actual child, was born in 1940. That’s most of the reason why the pall bearers at her funeral came from so many different branches of the family. We weren’t the only ones in the neighborhood to be so lucky. The kids next door…their mother’s parents were over there A LOT.
It’s different in America now. And, IMO, sad. Plus, with such distance among the generations, a lot of new parents have no clue how to be parents. Work is their identity. Personally, I’d rather raise kids, but that was not in God’s plans for me. At least, not so far.
My friends grandparents were mine also and their ant was mine and I could come to anyone home and was one of the family. I always say I was raised by a village.
I miss that because I am a huger and love children and even unruly kids calm around me. I think they know .
Times have changed and now I have my dogs and three cats to fuss over and share my hugging nature with them and they respond 🙂
We may have new Cold and Flu Season Mandates.
I’m hoping not for mandates so much as people thinking before they go to the movie theater with a cold. That’s a cultural change.
It does not help that sick leave has become a thing of the past, at least in my sector of the economy. We now have “Paid Time Off” and you’re supposed to use it if sick. But that gives people an incentive to NOT call in sick, and use the time for vacation instead.
It cuts down on people calling in sick when they really plan to go fishing…but it encourages people to go in when slightly sick.
I think this has made an impact. At previous job, husband had accumulated weeks of sick leave as it rolled over. It was almost like a nest egg for a “just in case” of illness or family illness. Built in, self made “family leave”. vacation days were paid out at full, sick leave paid out at half if one left the company.
But now only PTO and yes, he does work unless he is so sick that he just can’t…but he works from home. Wish he had sick leave as sometimes he needs to just sleep but, no, he isn’t getting anyone else sick.
Those who can’t work from home also push themselves and they are exposing others! Not a good corp change.
I do understand why they thought it was a good idea.
I heard stories about one company (from someone who had worked there) where the corporate culture was so tied into taking vacation by lying about being sick, that he had a coworker come in who had the most obvious cold…one where you say “doze” instead of “nose”…and that person said he felt far too crappy to use a sick day.
The changeover certainly resulted in fewer days taken off, but more people catching stuff at work.

This is quite suspicious to me. Empty parking lots, empty hallways. One video after another, in all different locations. Something else is in play here.
1) Wouldn’t hospitals *appear* less busy as only the medical staff and the ill are there and No visitors coming and going? No day patients for office visits and follow ups? (I am sure they are going to the offices) No elective surgeries? Only those who are very ill with various diseases and injuries are there now and very little/coming and going so it makes sense they hospitals look peaceful on the outside.
2) Is the media saying all hospitals or even many are a war zone? are they taking what is happening in a few hospitals and trying to make it sound like that is everywhere?
If so, that doesn’t make sense for them to do that because it is not yet true. It is what is going to happen that President Trump talked about and explained today.
we have not reached peak anywhere, or even close to peak as far as pure # of cases. Other than a few hospitals in the Atlanta area, NYC and LA, I haven’t heard reports of Any hospitals being stressed/close to reaching situation levels at this point.

That will happen more by mid and late next week, 2 weeks-3 weeks we will see the surge and the hospital beds filling.

My “professional” prepper friend is saying just don’t go out now – and be prepared to stay home for a while. Even if you are just eating prepper food you don’t like, just stay home now is his advice.
That’s too restrictive for me, and since my wife and I probably both had it in Jan/Feb, our duty now simply is to avoid being SPREADERS of fresh virus from one person to another – most likely on our clothes. But we still follow the guidelines just to be sure.

I have been wearing a long shawl/wrap in public. (only going in public to the doctor. husband does all else with masks on and I can’t wear a mask for medical reasons) The wrap covers most of me from shoulders to knees. It comes off of me when I get back to the car and stays there until the next time I need it.
Shoes and sock can be taken off outside with out causing a scandal.
Hand sanitizer as soon as I open the car door. clorox wipes on the hand sanitizer, keys & on the car door handles to clean up what I just touched prior to hand sanitizing.
I pat down/rub my pants with clorox wipes … kind of sanitizing. Not ideal but doing the best I can with my situation.
Husband wears mask and sanitizes what we buy. Haven’t been washing fresh produce … but not buying as much right now and much of it coming from “Misfits” so yes, still supply chain workers handling it but minus 100s of customers breathing around it. Need to start being more careful with fresh produce.
Anyway, just sharing how we are applying the general advice to what we can do and what is practical for us.
