What Is Ash Wednesday?
& Why Do Christians Celebrate It?
Each year, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and is always 46 days before Easter Sunday. Lent is a 40-day season (not counting Sundays) marked by repentance, fasting, reflection, and ultimately celebration. The 40-day period represents Christ’s time of temptation in the wilderness, where he fasted and where Satan tempted him. Lent asks believers to set aside a time each year for similar fasting, marking an intentional season of focus on Christ’s life, ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection.
Catholic, Orthodox and many (but not all) Protestants appreciate and observe Lent. Though Lent is not named or observed in the Bible, as Christianity Today notes, “the path of Lent—prayer, fasting, and generosity over a period of time—is heavily emphasized by the authors of and characters in the Bible, including Jesus. The Bible commends a lifestyle of worship and devotion that looks considerably like Lent. Therefore, while the word is absent in the Bible, the reality of Lent is woven throughout the whole of Scripture, as we have discovered.”
In his Gospel Coalition article Evangelicals Embracing (and Rejecting) Lent, Trevin Wax gives us an important reminder regardless of whether we personally observe Lent:
“I hardly think the church is suffering from too much fasting,” Wax says. “But I do think the church is suffering from too much self-righteousness (and I include myself in this indictment). Lent – being either for or against – can become a way of climbing up on to the pedestal.”
He goes on to say, “What is more important than the practices we take on is the heart attitude behind them. If there’s anything we should give up this time of year, it’s our sense of superiority either to those outside the church or those inside the church who do things differently than we do.”

Lord, Holy One, have mercy on us. We confess our sins to you. We have fallen short of your glory and without your mercy and grace, we would be dust. We repent now. Lord, as we enter into this Lenten season, be near to us. Help us, by your Holy Spirit, to feel right conviction and repentance for our sin. Help us, by your Spirit, to have the strength to overcome the enemy.
Thank you, Lord, that Easter is coming! Death has no sting, no victory, because of Jesus! Glory and honor and praise to His name! Thank you for rescuing us. Help us keep both the weight and the joy of this season in our hearts and we move through the next several weeks. Help us bear the good fruit of your Spirit.
Thank you that the ashes on our forehead do not symbolize our ultimate reality. From dust we might have been formed, but our bodies, our spirits, ourselves, await beautiful redemption and the restoration of all things. Help us long and look forward to that day, and let it come quickly, Lord Jesus.

To give some perspective, meningitis killed forty-five people in 2017. Most states mandate meningitis vaccination for college and university students. Would they consider the same kind of prevention campaigns for the deadly blood clots caused by hormonal birth control?
During the testing period back in the 50s and 60s, the death rate was noticed, so the trials were moved offshore to places like Puerto Rico. Subjects recruited were low income women. There’s a lot of literature out there on this.
And, no, hormonal BC systems DO NOT prevent cancer at all.

Wheatietoo, On a state level, I see progress with TN Government Operations Committee recently moving to dismiss the entire Massage Licensure Board because of deficits and a new Board will be appointed.
For the past two years, the board has run a deficit which automatically requires it to have a hearing before the Government Operations Committee to explain their deficits and present a plan to fix it. Many hours of individual massage therapists meetings with legislators informing them of their concerns about issues gave legislators information they could use to pose relevant questions and demand answers which evidently were not satisfied.
Personally, I think this is another “trickle down effect” of our new Governor Bill Lee, a successful businessman prior to his recent election who is implementing some new strategies to make government more efficient. The biggest problem we have is that there are only two parties in the U.S. The party of leftism and the Whig party of do-nothingism.
The Republicans emerged as a political force in the U.S. because the Whigs refused to take a stand against Democrats on the issue of slavery and preferred to tolerate it.
However the Whigs have taken the party back over, led by the NeoCon and Anti-Trumper wings. Make no mistake: CPAC is not a warm and friendly big tent. They’ve been kicking people out for many years now while cheerfully bringing in their preferred constituents. IT MAKES ME SICK.
We have been battered conservatives for decades now. Every time we get power the party leaders prevent us from making the necessary reforms that were enacted in the platform and that millions of volunteers toiled endlessly to achieve. If vitamin C is helpful to what you have, if you can get hold of some elderberry syrup that should be very helpful. Studies have shown it is even more effective than Tamiflu in reducing the duration of colds/flus. Three or four days reduction in sick time for the elderberry.

I attended CPAC 2010. It’s mostly for young conservatives. That said, they do have wonderful speakers, and in any given year, it’s worthwhile for that. Matt Sclapp isn’t one of my favorite people, and there will be mixed feelings about all of these people. Well… except POTUS.
Personally, I keep my own counsel on what I find useful, and disregard what doesn’t work for me.

Sometimes, when i thought I’ve seen the strangest things yet, then something like the text on this T-shirt comes along. Now, I’m so old that even when I get surprised occasionally, I’ve opened my mind as to what else might be there. Once, I thought «nah there is absolutely no way that X can happen» and 15 minutes later, there that very same X is, front and center and at least as large as life and twice the surprise. Been happening too many times for me to any longer believe that’s how reality works.
Still there is a place for a «What The …» now and then.
Now from what I’ve seen of these SJWs, they tend towards being a humor-impaired lot, so it is going to take them some time to see this joke, if ever. As I just noted, I’ve not seen all so I don’t discount the possibility, and anything might still happen. This would be true, but Hillary has no chance, either. She has already complained that she’s never seen the country so divided. This means she might step forward and offer herself as a reasonable, ‘centrist’ Democrat, but in actuality Hillary has been a major part of the polarization by paying for a fake dossier to get the FBI to spy on Trump.

Well, I found another leftist group to watch out for. When I was working Sunday, I leafed through the Omaha World Herald and saw a full page ad from this group targeting Sasse. I had never heard of them so I looked them up……definitely left-leaning. Turns out they put out full-page ads in a number of states, including targeting Grassley (IA), Tillis (NC) and Graham (SC). However, in this case, I tend to agree with them. Having said that, again, there is ALWAYS something in the shadows that, when it sees the light of day, changes the picture completely.

the last Q post on term limits has me wondering about our founding fathers’ intent. I respect the separation of powers and the oversight branches have over another branch. But it is very unfair (imo) that Congress can limit a President’s terms but no one can limit theirs. And they can vote themselves raises and benefits from our Treasury–without a say from the voters–and let’s face it, they will never vote to limit their access to taxpayers’ money.
IMO, there is no doubt that the INTENT of the Founders was citizen legislators who served part-time, then returned to private life. It was never intended to be a lifetime position. IDK off the top of my mind what the Federalists had to say about the subject.

and that the devil, satan, lucifer, etc, has been reigning on this earth for some time now and he will put up a final battle before the great white throne judgement.
and yet on earth here how many people actually think in this way? other than going to church and occasionally hearing some firebrand preacher speak of this – how many people actually perceive that this is our reality – that there will be a new heaven and new earth? that there will be a 1000 year reign on earth after the tribulation before finally making our “eternal” home in heaven?
do you think that is a realistic thing or do you think it’s all metaphorical and that our spirit is only something that we concocted to explain our “awareness” of ourselves and that at some point there will be a realization of peace and righteousness?
i am rambling here but again, this is a concept that not one person has ever been able to explain to me unless i take ideas from traditional preachers, ideas from conspiracy theories, ideas from ancient alien researchers and put them all together. in other words the “god said it, it’s in the bible, i believe it” is and has never been something i swallowed as an explanation for every question or curiosity i came across. that to me would just simple mind control and blind faith. it has to be much more than that – because i feel many (most of) the people i’ve known in 40+ years that are christians are mostly that because they are scared (or were scared at one point) that they would go to “hell” and therefore they made sure they were going to heaven and then, bam, on with life.
other options could be that religion is the opiate of the masses and was created to keep and control people to serve the needs of those who need compliance, and now we are in a time where the need for the “control” through religion is not for keeping people down (because of technology the control is accomplished in other ways) and now it is used only for the division that it now brings…
interesting stuff man.
Andrew, it helps to be open to the concept that religion is just another concept from the human side of things. And be open to the idea that a divine creator, as experienced by native peoples around the world for as long as humans have been around might just find fulfillment through engagement with us.

There are as meany views out there of Gd/Jesus etc as there are people who have considered these matters. Who can say what the truth of the matter is? Not I, certainly.
As such, many professing Christians differ profoundly in their understanding. I don’t enter into dispute with people on these issues – beliefs can almost never be rationally engaged with. I love debating these issue with “open minded” folk, cause then the emotions tend not to dominate and interesting debate is possible.
I believe that Gd is as real as “anything / everything” can possibly be. Gd is not a material being – in my opinion – based on my on experience and reading widely as a result. But Gd certainly interacts with people through the “conscious” realm – I believe that I have directly experienced this at least once, possibly numerous times (I can express certainty in all “encounters”, since I have been unable to rule out coincidence/happenstance or an overactive imagination).
But there is no doubt in my mind that Gd interacts with humans throughout history and is waiting patiently for us to awaken fully to Gd.
I will be blogging on all this in the near future and hopefully we can bat this around endlessly 🙂

President Trump continues making strides to reach across party lines, as he made a phone call to a terminally ill man whose sister is a Democratic councilwoman.
Given only six months to live, Jay Barrett had a big request on his bucket list: a gesture from President Trump. Suffering with cystic fibrosis, Barrett “began palliative care for his cystic fibrosis last week at the home of his sister, West Haven city Councilwoman Bridgette Hoskie (D),” according to The Hill.
Barrett was shocked when he was put in contact with both Eric Trump and HUD official Lynne Patton on Monday, his first day home from the hospital. Barrett said Patton “hit me up on Instagram — it’s pretty incredible.”
Receiving a call from around 7:45, Barrett said that Eric Trump told him he would be receiving a special gift from his father. “He told me they’re pulling for me and praying,” Barrett said about his phone conversation.
According to New Haven Register Patton and Barrett connected on Facebook where she said, “Done. Just spoke to Eric Trump and he has a signed gift from his father especially for Jay. And trust me, Trump doesn’t sign much anymore now that he’s POTUS, so this is very special.”
Barrett was in for the surprise of a lifetime when President Trump called him on Tuesday.
“Mr. President, through thick and thin, you know there’s been a lot of thicks, and there’s been a lot of thins, I support you,” Barrett told the President. Trump told Barrett he was a “champ” and, “You’re my kind of man, Jay. … I’m very proud of you. I’ll talk to you again, Jay, OK? You keep that fight going. We both fight.”

The illegal alien charged with murdering 20-year-old college student Mollie Tibbetts is asking that his confession be thrown out of the case.
In August 2018, Bahena-Rivera, an illegal alien from Mexico, was charged with Tibbetts’ murder after police said he admitted to confronting and chasing down the young woman after her body was found in a cornfield in Poweshiek County, Iowa. The illegal alien lived in a region of Iowa that was surrounded by sanctuary cities, as Breitbart News noted, and worked on a dairy farm using a stolen ID and Social Security card after allegedly crossing the U.S.-Mexico border as a child.
Bahena-Rivera’s attorneys have now filed a motion requesting that the illegal alien’s confession to police be thrown out of the case because they claim their client was not read his Miranda rights.
The motion claims law enforcement officials did not make Bahena-Rivera aware of the fact that he could have refused to have his car searched by police when they first went to question him last year at Yarrabee Farms, the dairy farm that employed the illegal alien.
The defense team also states that Iowa detectives did not read the illegal alien his Miranda rights before Bahena-Rivera confessed to murdering Tibbetts, and that authorities allegedly told him he did not need an attorney for the questioning.
This is the latest request that Bahena-Rivera has made in the murder trial against him. Most recently, the illegal alien’s defense team asked that the jury pool be moved to an Iowa county with less of a white population and more of a predominantly Hispanic region.
Bahena-Rivera’s attorneys claim “a fair and impartial trial cannot be preserved with a jury selected from [Poweshiek] county” due to alleged negative perceptions of the Hispanic community by white Americans in the area.
As Breitbart News reported, the illegal alien had initially requested that he not be called an “illegal alien,” and his attorneys have said that he has a “constitutional right” to receive $5,000 in state taxpayer money to hire an independent investigative team for his defense.
According to prosecutors, Bahena-Rivera was the last person who saw Tibbetts jogging on the evening of July 18 in Brooklyn, Iowa, security camera footage reveals. That is the night Tibbetts went missing.
The illegal alien told police that Tibbetts was jogging when he saw her, according to prosecutors. That is when he said he approached Tibbetts and started talking to her. After Tibbetts told Bahena-Rivera that she would call the police if he did not stop following her, the illegal alien allegedly chased her and says he “blacked out” after this.
Police believe Bahena-Rivera stabbed Tibbetts to death, then drove to a cornfield where prosecutors say Bahena-Rivera placed cornstalks over her to hide her body. The illegal alien has been held on a $5 million bond, and the murder trial is set for September.
