Be and Do Always . . .
Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, also known as Maimonides and by Rambam, was a 12th century esteemed Rabbi, Jewish sage and scholar who classified and recorded 613 commandments (mitzvot) in his writings on the Torah. We’re more familiar with the 10 Commandments written on stone tablets that Moses brought down from Mount Sinai.
1,050 commands have been cataloged from the New Testament, under 69 headings. We also believe the Old Testament as Jesus said, “For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished” (Matthew 5:18).
Jesus completely summarized all that is required with “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40)
Jesus’ summation comes from the Torah: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. (Deuteronomy 6:4-5). And, love your neighbor: “You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord (Leviticus 19:18). “You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God. (Leviticus 19:34)
The point here is that it would be impossible (and very legalistic) to list all these requirements and then try to follow each in our lives. However, I’d like to present six actions (there are certainly more) that would be beneficial for us to fully embed in our lives.
What to Be Always and Do Continually
To come close to the standard the Bible gives for Christian living, or to attain it, requires a changed heart and an ongoing renewal of the mind. A person who does not know God cannot sustain these kinds of attitudes and practices in their life. When one is born again of the Spirit of God, the foundation is put in place to begin to live a life according to the following (and more) commands and exhortations from the Scripture.
1. In everything GIVE THANKS, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (1 Thessalonians 5:19)
There is never a time when we are not supposed to be thankful. Do you want to know the will of God for your life? It is to be thankful! Always! THIS is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
A correct perspective will enable us to be grateful. We need to realize that whatever we have that is good, it is there because of God the Father. It is therefore right to be thankful. The Bible says:
“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Colossians 3:17)
Your life and mine will be transformed if we truly put this into practice. There is never a time when we are not supposed to be thankful and to be giving thanks to God the Father.
2. Abound in Hope
In the Bible, hope is a positive unwavering expectation of GOOD. It is what happens when you believe that something good is going to happen.
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)
Hope is something that God can fill you with. It is a wonderful gift from God. Faith, hope and love remain eternally, according to 1 Corinthians 13:13.
We can also tell ourselves to hope – and we can choose to hope continually.
The Psalmist said: “But I will hope continually, And will praise You yet more and more.” (Psalm 71:14). He said earlier in the same psalm: “For You are my hope, O Lord GOD; You are my trust from my youth.” (Psalm 71:5)
As long as God is with us, we have hope with us, and we ought therefore to hope continually.
3. Praise God with our Lips
“Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” (Hebrews 13:15)
Praise is sometimes a sacrifice, because there are times when things don’t seem to be going too well for us, or we don’t feel so upbeat. At those times we can MAKE OURSELVES praise God. Praising God is to speak out or sing out about the goodness of God. We can make ourselves do this. Its a choice. King David vowed to praise God seven times a day.
We may feel we have reason to be sad, but if we are in Christ, we have greater reasons to praise God, to rejoice and to be happy. God has done a lot for us, though we may not feel all these things to be true as yet, but they ARE true, and PRAISING GOD will greatly help us to start to believe the way we should, and also to feel the way that God would like us to!
4. Rejoice Always
“Rejoice always” instructs 1 Thessalonians 5:16. “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4)
If these Scriptures mean anything, they mean that we cannot put pre-conditions on our rejoicing. God does not say: “If you don’t have something you want yet, I understand that you may not wish to rejoice, and I respect that”.
We are not instructed to rejoice in temporal things – a payrise, a new job, a good deal, a new friendship – though we are instructed to give THANKS for these things.
We are instructed to rejoice IN THE LORD. That is, our rejoicing is an act of faith that is rooted in something of eternal stability – GOD HIMSELF – not in the changing fortunes and circumstances of life.
We can choose to rejoice. It’s amazing how our emotions can change in line with our choices.
Smile, sing, dance, REJOICE in the LORD as an expression of faith in an eternal God whom we hold to be our good Father, and you’ll be amazed how much better you feel.
5. Pray Without Ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
We are to keep a divine connection going with heaven, no matter what it takes. It may not be easy. It is work, it is a fight, it is a struggle. It can only be done with the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Paul said: “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:18)
It is no accident that this verse comes at the end of a passage about spiritual warfare and putting on the whole armor of God. Prayer is the battle we are called to.
6. Be in Faith
But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin. (Romans 14:23)
This is a negative way of putting it, but this verse implies that FAITH is a standard of life. Everything we do must be done in faith. Our thoughts should be in line with FAITH IN GOD.
Our prayers should be prayers of faith. “Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” (Mark 11:24)
Our prayers ought to be prayers of faith. We are supposed to really believe that we receive what we ask for. That is God’s will and God’s standard. Jesus was always in faith, and He is our model. The just shall live by faith.
7. Walk in Love
Paul said, “Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14). Without divine love, nothing will ultimately profit us. We are called to be like God, who gave Himself and gave His Son for us.
Love is giving. I don’t mean to say that all giving is love. But the nature of love is to give, to bless, to help, to make sacrifices for others.
All of our faith and hope, and spiritual warfare, is for the purpose of helping people and for giving the glory to God.
We are called to be this way as described above. It can only be done by entering into the death and resurrection of Christ by faith – by dying to old ways and by rising up again in new life indwelt by the Spirit of God.

What’s next for JWST?
All of the focus (pardon the pun) so far has been on the structure of the telescope; now attention turns to the mirror.
There are 18 hexagonal mirror segments in the primary mirror; and they are NOT in their final positions; they were placed in hard stop positions for launch. These must each be released and the mirrors must move away from their backings about half an inch. There are eleven days allocated for this, starting today (Sunday). Once released, they will be under the control of their actuators; six per segment to tilt them as needed, one in the center that can actually push or pull the mirror into a different curvature.
They did not, did not want these mirrors out there on their actuators during launch; the vibration would have wrecked those actuators, which are very, very precise; they can move a mirror less than 1/10,000th the thickness of a human hair.
But we really can’t play with the alignment until sometime after the JWST arrives at L2, because the instruments that would be reading what they see won’t have cooled down enough before then. But once that does happen, here’s a video illustrating the process:
Again, that’s sometime AFTER arrival at L2.
It will take about three months to get those mirrors lined up AND, of course, get the secondary mirror (at the peak of the tripod) tilted just right to send all that infrared light where it needs to go, down the center of the black post in the center of the primary mirror, where it will bounce off a couple more mirrors and then into the instruments.
Once the mirrors are lined up (which sounds like about the middle or end of April), they fire up the instruments in the big box behind the main mirror array and start calibrating them.
Before ANYTHING is released publicly, they will take a few “spectacular knock your socks off” shots.

It turns out my keratoconus, which might have blinded me eventually, was diagnosed using Webb spinoffs. I didn’t know this until about two days ago.
I was looking at that large compound mirror and wondering if there wasn’t anything it could do in “dragonfly mode” — like identify small moving objects among the stars…..
Each element of a compound eye is one pixel. So of course to detect motion the insect’s brain has to correlate the signals from different segments.
In this case, there’s no need as there are megapixels behind each segment. In fact, it’d be about the dumbest thing they could possibly do.
Actually, each element of a compound eye (“ommatidia”) has a separate cornea, lens, and several “pixels”, capable of discerning a bit of an image.
The real problem is that each mirror is only about a meter across, and the distances in space are immense. A dragonfly’s compound eye is probably optimized at a couple of meters, and each element is probably about 1/2mm by 1/2mm. Scaled up, the JWST might only “dragonfly mode” items at L2.
Good grief, I think you’re actually being serious.
You clearly don’t understand how a telescope works, if you think a one meter mirror segment makes this thing work like a dragonfly’s eyes.
The element is a meter across, but it’s curved so as to focus light from an extremely tiny angle of the sky. The effective focal length is over a hundred meters.
So the field of view is–by design–extremely narrow, though a lot of light is being collected from that small area. (The primary purpose of a telescope, in fact, is to gather more light, not to magnify.) This will then be projected onto sensors of up to 40 megapixels (depending on the instrument).
We want the 18 sections to act like ONE mirror. If one is out of alignment, all we will get for our effort is a double image.
This started with your observation about misaligned mirrors creating multiple images, combined with your timeline that final alignment being months in the future, after further cooling and such.
From there, I started idly brainstorming as to what could be done with multiple images — and using a dragonfly as an aid to imagination. They are infamously efficient 3D hunters with compound eyes. This allows them to rapidly identify and track their prey and catch them “on the wing”. Nature has developed and maintained this design, so there may be something to it.
Obviously, the “real” mission of the telescope involves all mirrors to act in a coordinated fashion to be as much like one mirror as possible, in order to see to the deeper reaches of space. Since this won’t happen for a couple of months, I was speculating as to whether it might, in the meantime, identify some of those rapid deep-space thingies that NASA is fond of telling us about as they whiz past Earth.
It’s much like wondering if someone at the Stanford Linear Accelerator could use the main particle beam to warm his ham sandwich for lunch. You’re never going to get the owner of the underlying asset to buy into it; it may be dangerous and/or embarrassing; and it’s probably unwise. But it does no harm to try to imagine it and work out some details.
Incidentally, I talked to someone who worked at SLAC and he informed me about some details. First, even though you see the building stretching off into the distance, the actual tube is about 30 feet underground. Second, everyone figures that it fires out towards the mountains….it’s the reverse — it’s actually fired toward the airport. Third, you get to strip off anything metallic when anywhere near the thing while it’s operating — those ginormous magnets do odd things. And, finally, every so often one of the steering magnets blows a circuit breaker at an inconvenient time, and the beam goes through the tube in a very short amount of time and starts chewing the walls of the tunnel.
I suspect that it would be easier to turn the ham sandwich to plasma than to warm it.

At this point what you’d actually have is a system returning multiple images. An exposure could detect a moving object by being long enough to see it “streak” on the one hand, or two exposures a few days apart can be compared and see that one dot moved (the latter is how Pluto was discovered). Multiple images wouldn’t help either of those; in fact it would just make things more confusing. Let’s say we have an image with multiple copies of the same streak on it; it would also have multiple images of all the background stars and it would be a bit of trouble to figure out which stars go with which streak and therefore determine the actual location of the moving object. Similarly for blinking.

I looked at King Arthur flour they have soup packages. They are a little pricy but it comes to $1 per person because a package serves 8 people. I like it soups are good. A scoup of barley soup or lintel soup is filling when hungry. I am counting that maybe even electricity is out .

Here is another basic service that is breaking down in my area: snow removal. It snowed here recently. Nothing too bad, but enough to be a nuisance on the roads. Despite it not being a bad storm, there was no snow removal. At all. Local news reports that even the roads around the hospital aren’t clear. There are complaints from all over the area on local social media about the lack of snow removal. My street was ignored as well—24+ hours after the storm, no plow, no salt, no nothing. There are inches of snow covering the road as I type this.
Only mentioning this because the recent Miles Mathis paper (.pdf) mentioned snow removal being a problem elsewhere in the country (notably Virginia) due to vaccine mandates forcing people to quit their plowing jobs. I can confirm it’s happening where I live, too. Prepare accordingly if accumulating snow is in the forecast.

Also, lately I have been remembering the 9 people who were murdered in a Charleston church in 2015 and the community response to forgive Dylann Roof. I felt humbled and moved by their faith. The justice system still worked and that is important, but the victims’ friends and family did not fill themselves with hate or hunger for revenge. An honest and fair justice system. We need that.
Sorry to say what I must about that crime, but I must. I did an enormous amount of research on it. Too many problems. IMO, Roof was the trigger-pulling Oswald of that one. I do NOT believe justice was served beyond the triggerman.
I admire those people who forgave what they did not understand, but not the justice system which allowed that JFK-style political assassination to fade into history unresolved, the powerful murderers to escape justice, and the true crime to go unpunished. It was the Devil’s work, but beyond the ken of most people, who accept the first story they are hit with by the fake news.

Leaving aside the fact that no two people can agree on what “the people” is or what “the people” actually want. It’s possible they think they’re doing the right thing for “the people” and “the people” just don’t know what they *should* want, but that’s EXACTLY the same attitude Lenin used to justify the dictatorship of the proletariat. The people I am talking about don’t hold public office, rather they chair or staff the Republican party at some state or local level. They run the party itself.

Just for instance, I was involved in College Republicans when I was in college, in Boulder county, and that got me involved with the county party itself.
There was a guy there, who never once held office, but he did so much work for the party that even though he wasn’t even the chairman, he was essentially the most powerful man in the party; more so perhaps than any of the officeholders (which in that county, few were Republican). When someone put forth an amendment to the bylaws to have three vice chairmen instead of just one, it was hotly debated, but then at the meeting he got up and begged people not to make the change.
It failed nearly unanimously.
That’s real power–and again, he never held public office.
I have no idea (today) whether he was a RINO or a good guy. I just don’t recall. Even under the best of circumstances, in a leftist county the Republican party will probably have a lot of RINOs in it–under the logic that a conservative can’t win there. They may even be right, in that particular case.
The same happens in churches.

I have a family story about this album…..
My dad is, sadly, one of the least musical individuals I have ever known. When people say, “he couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket”…..with my dad, the tune would be actively trying to escape.
But he used to mutter along to himself, with perhaps one word out of three meaning something, at some quirky rhythm and a bare semblance of tone. We always used to find it just peculiar…..until I was in my teens and my mom found THAT ALBUM in a remainder bin.
And we realized that my dad had been “singing” along to various songs from the album. The pitch of the tones didn’t match; the notes were closer, but still were out-of-time. As mentioned, only about one word out of three in the lyric could be recognized…..but it was clear that the odd semi-rhythmic mutterings were responses to the songs of the album from someone with no (zero or negative) musical ability.
The family’s response to that knowledge will, perhaps, be some other day. The shock of having that particular album throw everything we “knew” about my dad’s “mumbles” into a different context is enough of a story for tonight.

How would they first tell the tale to someone who didn’t know it?
I can draw an analogy. Chinese, of course, is famous for its pictographic writing system, but then, how do they introduce new vocabulary in print and convey how it’s to be pronounced? I mean even things like the names of foreigners.
They have a mode where it can be phonetic, for such situations, sort of an “escape” mode.
This other culture would need such a mode for communicating with their own kids, if nothing else, and if they’re too damn stupid to use it when dealing with someone who’s never heard the story, they’re not bright enough to be building space ships.
So very true! In our family’s unique situation w/ Josiah when he was younger we’d tell other people what quote he was saying to help them somewhat comprehend the randomness. I still have to remind him to give Context to some of his remarks. He still tends to start his “stories” in the middle, often using a pronoun referring to someone he Assumes you know he’s referring to. It’s a fairly easy guess that when it’s she or her he Might be referring to his fiancée Rose.
He is an individual for which the phrase “lost in translation” can apply to those around him who also speak English but don’t have his movie quoting knowledge base, as in pretty much anyone who didn’t live in his family of origin!
If he’d even say “that reminds me when Curley of the Three Stooges said”…it would be a huge communication improvement!

That’s one reason why the arguments won’t work.
The fact that such arguments have to be made at all, is an acknowledgment of the absurd and surreal environment we’re in.
It’s like a sudden controversy over whether the sky is blue and the grass is green. If you have to present an argument to reestablish the obvious, then you are either dealing with madness, or people who are purposely acting in bad faith.
And neither one is amenable to logic or reason.
The enemy openly denies any ‘science’ that contradicts their narrative, while simultaneously accusing everyone who disagrees with their narrative as ‘science deniers’.
Once you’ve gone through the looking glass, things like sound arguments and traditional science are moot. Or worse, they’re inverted.

I’m pretty sure I’ve got that book. One of the many fascinating things discussed is that things that travel in straight lines are quickly analyzed by the brain and are replaced by a prediction. Things that travel in curved lines get more constant attention. So if you’re going to do a handoff, wave the wand in curved lines with one hand and just move the other hand to pick up the cards in a straight line.
That both authors are neuroscientists with appropriate labs is very informative.

Today I’m grateful for the doctor at our local urgent care for using her platform to speak truth. We had to take my son in, since we have covid and he needs a doctor’s note to get back into school. She talked about vaccination and instead of the normal push, she told us NOT to have him vaccinated that natural immunity is better for everyone, but the shot is particularly dangerous for kids and should be avoided. Re: Lin Wood and the others.
If he said “Powell is a man,” 1) IMO he shouldn’t have said it, and 2) it’s no different than people saying Michelle O is a man (except that Powell is on the same side).
A lot of people think Wood is crazy. Some blame him for any and all “division” within the MAGA movement. There are points to be made for and against these positions. In my experience, people want the lines of division to be clear so we don’t have to think about what people are actually saying and doing. For example, “Wood is crazy; we don’t have to pay any attention to him,” and “Flynn is a hero and can do no wrong.” Simple and done. But life isn’t that simple.
I regularly check Wood’s Telegram to see what he is saying. Most of the time when he says something considered outrageous, evidence will trickle out that shows why he said it (and often that he was correct). This was true when he said Rittenhouse was being influenced by someone, and it was true when he defended himself against the lies Rittenhouse told in the Tucker Carlson interview. It was true when many prominent conservative pundits jumped on the Rittenhouse bandwagon, did not research the truth, and slandered Wood. Again, A=good, B=bad, so we don’t have to think. We can ignore A.
Some very interesting tidbits can be gleaned from Wood’s Telegram channel about finances and where the money is going, if it is read with an open mind and the desire to find the truth. When he makes allegations, I am interested to see if they turn out to be true. I am not going to throw Wood under the bus just for asking questions. I also want to know exactly who the “heroes who can do no wrong” really are. If they really are clean as a whistle, great. But everything stopped for me when no one defended Wood and the truth about his funding Rittenhouse. It makes a lot of people uncomfortable, so I don’t dwell on it here, but something is wrong.

Something interesting happened to us around 7AM.
The door bell rang my husband opens the door and there is Police with a big police swat car.
They told my husband “someone called 911 from our phone and it sounded like a open line”. The puzzle is we did not call anyone and no one else in the house. We have no clue how many police was there . My husband saw 2.

I noticed a while back when digging through my Fritz!Box’s logs and code (interesting what you can find out dumping their “system backup”) that failed calls to our phone number had an IP address assigned to them. So it could be that a call could be spoofed?
Then again the 911 folks/equipment should be able to “see” that… or maybe not…
[OK, there’s a lot of technodrabble I’m leaving out here… but still, it is conceivable that a VOIP call could be spoofed]…

One thing that’s nice about my Fritz!Box is that I can set up block lists, or even groups of block lists. All I need to do is enter in the number, and the FB blocks the perp(s) from then onwards. Of course if it’s a bot farm on the other end with 1000 numbers, then that won’t be worth the trouble unless the whole prefix domain can be blocked without keeping good folks out. (And yes, there are whitelists/blacklists, all sorts of goodies that can be programmed… but I don’t want/need to do that. Yet.)
Of course it only works with VOIP going through the box (which ours is) but that’s convenient. I also get a log about who called (or tried) and time of call, length, etc. Being Germany, I had to request getting the full number string…
The only problem with telephony going in/out over DSL is that if DSL goes out, EVERYTHING goes down (phones and internet). But we have “handys” for that, anyway (even some of the dreaded iThings).
It’s all but impossible to get a PURE (copper, no IP) land line anymore, as they’re yanking all the copper up and putting in fiber)

I’ve seen reviews of those FB’s, and they look like an impressive piece of kit……but pricey. Are they easier on the wallet over there?
What normally happens is they are part of a DSL package, so they’re discounted via the carrier as part of the monthly fee – after 24 months, it’s yours free and clear, and you can get the next model, or a different one, etc., when you “re-up”. I’ve got the 7590 (because it has an ISDN S0 bus) which I still use because I have ISDN phones, etc.). I also has WiFi, 4 gig LAN ports, a USB port, a couple of POTS-type jacks, etc., etc. I also have the 7490, its predecessor from my last contract, and a 7171 from before that. Each upgrade was necessary because I went from 2Mb to 6Mb to 100Mb to 250Mb and the modem standards changed… so the old stuff can only be used downstream… sigh… beats buying new stuff, though. The 7590 was €6.99 per month, almost €168, which is less than the street price of around €198. The newer version of the 7590 is a lot more, something like €259 or so, which isn’t worth the added expense. But it’ll come down eventually. We’re waiting patiently for FTTD, but we really don’t need it, as we don’t stream, and NetFlix, Amazoon, and all the other woke cr@p can go elsewhere…
FBs are popular with folks who like to roll their own routers, though I think they might have clamped down on that a bit. Interestingly enough, the backup is in plaintext, so if you wanted to dink around and change things and load it back in, you could do it (which is effectively what they do). Lots of bells and whistles in there, some not enabled, etc. All in all, it’s a good piece of kit, and has been chugging away pretty much uneventfully for three years now.
The typical way to get a reduced price on DSL and/or the FB is to call in and ask to cancel the contract when the time’s up. After that, a “customer care consultant” (or whatever they’re called) will contact you, and offer a renewal with (usually) much better terms. So, rather than €44,99 per month for DSL and flat-rate telephony, I’m paying €24,99, and since I don’t need a new FB, that’s all I have to pay (except for special phone charges for international calls, etc.)…
I think AVM (makers of the “Fritz!Boxen” have most of the market here; either as their own boxes, or OEM’d to the various DSL resellers, e.g. 1&1 or O2… I like the red and white case of the regular FBs, but the piano black of the 1&1 is cheaper (the way I got it) and the same guts, etc.
They also have very thorough change histories on their website, and there are user groups/fan clubs for more info…

Yes they had the Police squat car not the normal cars they ride in and one woman one man police man were at the door.
We did get a call from police about 10-15 minutes earlier but did not know who it was they did not leave a message. They also did shine a light around the house. I thought we were in a movie it seemed so unreal . I was concerned they bead down the door. They were friendly enough.

When they saw this old guy in his bathrobe they figured all is ok. My husband told me he knows the police woman she has come to the University before.
OK – you saw the police call to you on the landline, but the way 911 works is that mobile phones are tied to an ADDRESS and that address is tied to a phone, and you could therefore have “butt-dialed” or “pocket-dialed” 911 from a mobile phone, but they called back on a different phone because they could not reach the mobile, which often happens if it goes into a pocket-dialed state.
In fact, everybody should check which address is tied to their mobile phones. These addresses get out of date very easily, and the ambulance will go to the wrong house.
That is way over my head. They just said they got a 911 from my address and phone. They did not say what phone. Yes we check our iPhone what address is listed.

Can someone access the outside of your house where your phone service comes in?
Your phone lines will typically come off a telephone pole (or intermediate wire) to the eave of your house, where it will drop to a “demarc box” — https://diagramweb.net/demarc-box-wiring-diagram.html . This is where “inside wiring” meets “network wiring”.
As you can see in the photos provided, many of them have a phone jack. If you unplug that plug and plug in another phone, it will be, to all intents and purposes, your wired indoor phone. After you’ve done whatever with that, you can unplug your spare phone and plug the standard plug in and all the indoor phones will work again.
Note that these are very rarely secured.
I had a dead landline many, many years ago, and the phone company insisted it was a problem with the wiring inside my house.
I then plugged a phone I knew worked (because I had tested it at someone else’s house) into that jack and still had no dial tone.
I had one of those dinky nokia cell phones (Hell, maybe it was a Motorola) that’s nothing but a phone, so I called them from right outside my house and got to calmly explain to them in words of one syllable or less, that their diagnostic software didn’t know what it was talking about, and why I knew that to be the case.
They got down off their high horses in a hurry.

iPhones get into weird states so easily now, due to tilt-activated on/off behavior. I find that the 911 stuff often happens if I’m working on household fixes and repairs, especially on ladders, and the phone gets jostled, etc.

I had to turn that shit off on my new Android (which I had to purchase after AT&T refused to respect my wishes and I switched carriers).
The problem is, I pick up the phone, it “turns on” (wakes up), but it takes a second to do so. So, not seeing it’s on, I hit the button to wake it up.
It then turns on, and then processes my button push as a “turn screen off”. Because of the delays, though it looked to me as if I was turning the phone screen ON only to have it shut off again immediately. This is maddening of course; “I’m waking you up you piece of shit, stay the f*ck ON goddammit!”
I couldn’t find any setting that would cause the phone to time out that quickly, and eventually figured out its slow response was fooling me. I disabled the “turn the screen on when the phone is picked up” option since it was slower than me pushing the button, and I’ve been much less tempted to throw the phone into a brick wall ever since.
I’d believe “less tempted”…….but “much less tempted” is surely an exaggeration.
Oh, I’m still occasionally tempted, but that particular behavior was more maddening than everything else the phone does, put together.

Just thinking… if you live in an older neighborhood, with phones that have been in a long time (50+ years-the cabling, not necessarily the phones themselves) and you have the old copper cabling and “POTs cabinets” in your neighborhood, it’s possible (but not likely) that a cross-connection could occur, especially in bad weather…
Anymore, everything up to “the last mile” is usually fiber, with a mux cabinet to translate to copper for the rest of the way. Or, for internet, the DSLAMs. Sometimes Ma Bell goofs… (in our case, way back when, having 20 free lines for 23 brand-new houses, most of whom wanted multiple lines… Nothing like having to call 411 from the local Shell station to get your phones back… and then someone else probably got cut off…..

We used to live in a VERY small town near Darmstadt, that had four-digit phone numbers, and probably only a couple of thousand residents, if that. Needless to say, the telephone system wasn’t *cough* up to date. We also had a phone number which kids would dial just for fun, and the exchange wasn’t smart enough to cut off when a fifth digit was dialled 🙂 or 🙁
Anyway, sometimes we’d pick up the handset and there’d be a conversation going on 🙂 We called the DBP about it, and they said “why not ask them who they are” (so much for dutzen and/or being rude) so we did. After a while the post finally fixed it (IIRC, we both got new wire pairs)… Just like the old party lines, but not wanted… don’t know if Germany ever had party lines or not…

6 months of everything is a hell of a lot of money. Some people are really excited by prepping and its just over the top. Others are vague but ominous about it.

Betting precious few folks have six months of everything. Doubtful it is even 1% of the population. Why? So many don’t see the need. Reality is it take s cash up front. Space to store. Environment.
For us, variety and breadth of what we go through, not even close. High volume stuff that won’t have to be tossed, yea we stock this stuff. Staples.
The good news is it doesn’t have to be a waste of money or food. Simply a hedge against possible food shortages that increasingly look likely. Peace of mind. Hedge against inflation for sure.
Hopefully it is all an exercise of sorts.

Ive got an online cart filled with a couple hundred again and spent 100. Bought an extra bag of dog food but thats just a months supply. Im torn between reasonable and panic. We will use it, wondering, besides you, how much people are really packing away.

IMO, you can’t go wrong with stocking up on wet pet food. I’ve been dealing with the pet food shortage since March 2020. That particular shortage has been going on for nearly two years now, and, even if best case scenario SD’s apocalyptic warnings are wrong, there doesn’t seem to be any relief in sight. A major part of what is causing the wet pet food shortage is a lack of aluminum cans to pack the food, so it’s not just the actual “food” part that is the problem.
My preferred brand of wet cat food is often unavailable for weeks at a time. Since March 2020, I’ve been making large bulk orders on the rare chances I see it in stock. Since it’s canned, it lasts a long time and it all gets eaten eventually.
Buy enough and you’re got a backup if social security collapses.

CDC Website Reveals Police Power Will be Use at Quarantine Stations for the “Benefit of Society”
The CDC announced on its website that to control the spread of disease within their borders, states have laws to enforce the use of isolation and quarantine. The law also includes the use of police power functions in their quarantine stations.

I’ve thought that the spirit of independence, in the sense of acting independently, is more of an American trait. I think it’s in our DNA. There are plenty of “compliers” here too, but at least we have the IDEA that we don’t have to comply.
