Here we are. Friday. In honor of the day, today’s libation is a Rusty Nail.
For decades, one of the hottest cocktails was the Rusty Nail. But after a good run, the simple combination of scotch and the scotch-based liqueur Drambuie, a word derived from Gaelic meaning “the drink that satisfies,” has fallen off most bar menus and is rarely ordered by patrons.
Just as mystifying as its disappearance was its appearance in the first place. The lineage of the potent after-dinner libation is contested, with many believing it was invented in 1937 for the British Industries Fair trade show. It does appear in the 1967 edition of “Old Mister Boston Official Bartender’s Guide,” the cocktail book of record through the post-Prohibition 20th century. (A similar drink, dubbed the Little Club #1, is included in Ted Saucier’s 1951 “Bottoms Up.”)
By the late 1960s, bars in New Orleans and New York were serving the concoction, and “Have you tried a Rusty Nail?” was a common refrain. The Rusty Nail is often credited to the clever bartenders at the 21 Club in Manhattan sometime in the early 1960s. It makes sense, being that the establishment created the famous B & B—half Bénédictine and half cognac—as well. It’s easy to imagine that the talented crew applied the same formula to another cordial and liquor, but I haven’t been able to substantiate that claim.
Lore has it that the Rat Pack was enamored with the drink, which may have been responsible for the wide appeal in those years. In the 1970s, I mixed many a Rusty Nail at the joints I worked at in New York. They were also a hit at P.J. Clarke’s, a favorite late-night haunt of Frank Sinatra.
As with lots of classics, the recipe varies widely. Ted Haigh, the author of “Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails,” likes two parts scotch to one part Drambuie; “Old Mister Boston” calls for a one-to-one ratio; and many modern versions are far drier, with some suggesting four parts whisky to one part liqueur. You could also substitute bourbon for scotch and get a Rusty Spike. But the Rusty Nail is a classic for a reason, and the two-to-one ratio will always be a fine example of the drink.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 ounces scotch
- 3/4 ounce Drambuie
Steps
- Add the scotch and Drambuie into a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled.
- Strain into a rocks glass over one large ice cube.
So simple even the Scots can make it. Of course, most of their food is based on a dare.
Okay, in case you haven’t heard, Elon Musk put out an offer to buy Twitter outright on Thursday. Dopey Prince Alaweed from Saudi Arabia turned him down, and the whole platform went nuts with the snowflakes melting as if the sun was shining on asphalt.

What Elon Musk appears to be doing is perhaps the biggest story that few understand.
I share this perspective having spent thousands of hours in the past several years deep in the weeds of tech operating systems, communication platforms, and the issue of simultaneous users. What Twitter represents, and what Musk is attempting, is not what most would think.
In the big picture of tech platforms, Twitter, as an operating model, is a massive high-user commenting system.
Twitter is not a platform built around a website; Twitter is a platform for comments and discussion that operates in the sphere of social media. As a consequence, the technology and data processing required to operate the platform does not have an economy of scale.
There is no business model where Twitter is financially viable to operate…. UNLESS the tech architecture under the platform was subsidized.
In my opinion, there is only one technological system and entity that could possibly underwrite the cost of Twitter to operate. That entity is the United States Government, and here’s why….
There is no business model, even with paying subscribers, for Twitter to exist. As the business grows, the costs increase, and the costs to subscribers would grow. So, what is going on?
The only way Twitter, with 217 million users, could exist as a viable platform is if they had access to tech systems of incredible scale and performance, and those systems were essentially free or very cheap. The only entity that could possibly provide that level of capacity and scale is the United States Government – combined with a bottomless bank account.
If my hunch is correct, Elon Musk is poised to expose the well-kept secret that most social media platforms are operating on U.S. government tech infrastructure and indirect subsidy. Let that sink in.
The U.S. technology system, the assembled massive system of connected databases and server networks, is the operating infrastructure that offsets the cost of Twitter to run their own servers and database. The backbone of Twitter is the United States government.
There is simply no way the Fourth Branch of Government, the U.S. intelligence system writ large, is going to permit that discovery.

How? Eggs are an ancient symbol of life. Traditionally, they are dyed red for the Passion.
I don’t get how traditions are labelled “anti-God” when they were developed to put fun into living for God. Same with adopting pagan traditions and making them holy. What’s the problem?

I’ve never made any bones about it. I can’t consider myself Christian because I just can’t follow all the “rules” that don’t make any sense to me.
I don’t know about ‘Christian’ (since I’m not one either) but the one problem with adopting pagan practices is that sooner or later they will lead you away from your faith. IOW, there is a good reason that AA members advise newcomers to avoid bars. Same principle.
As I said, it’s what I was taught. Not a rule – just an observation of life. YMMV.
Ah now I get it. True over time I have observed holiday celebrations away from God. Sometimes the Christmas tree decorating into perfection and gift is more important than then the birth of Christ itself. Same can be said about Easter people make it more into the secular than a time to celebrate focus on the living Christ. To show off the Easter outfit in church often is important . The outfit is the center 🙄

We were over at my sister’s for Easter way-back-when, and had an Easter Egg hunt for my son, who was about three or so. He had a little basket into which he put the little eggs he found.
My niece was following close behind, secretly taking eggs from the basket and hiding them again 🙂 I think he “found” some of the eggs four or five times 😀 🐇 🐰 😂

The tale I was taught as a young-un is that the Easter bunny brought the eggs and hid them for the children to find. IOW the eggs came from the Easter bunny, which is directly contradictory to the truth that they came from God.
Anyway, that’s roughly how I learned it. It’s also a distraction from what is truly special about that day which is NOT finding hidden eggs.

It’s a pretty big deal in our home. We start out by seasonally decorating inside and out for spring anyway. I have a Happy Easter garden flag I put out the day after St. Patrick’s Day as an example.
We keep the grandkids today for an overnight. Gives us a chance to talk with them about the Lord, Easter, and their lives in between games and such.
They spend Saturday night at home and come back for an early dinner we call lupper after church for them, the rest of the family and any friends who want to come. We have ham and turkey as the meats, deviled 😂 eggs out our ears, etc. Fun day and one spent remembering the incredible significance of the empty tomb and our Savior in between all the fun and goofiness.

We stay home were not invited 🙂 I never visit anyone unless invited even my children.
I bought a ham I rather had lamb but my husband really felt like ham so we have ham . Easter a day to celebrate and be happy and make others happy.
The problem is the only relatives we have is three children two are 5 hours away and one in CT. 4 grandchildren but 3 in college one at home.

That is a possibility. My granddaughter is getting an apartment off campus and she needs household items. She and my daughter might come this summer and shop at my house for dishes silver ware pots and pants and other stuff I have.

Yes that is how it is. When gets old one looks at the junk as a burden. Needs to be cleaned and taken care off. It is a release when family comes and takes or anyone else.
I used to go visit a family friend’s daughter he loved crystal and hand made doilies. Each time I visited instead of buying new I brought her those gifts. She loved them and for her it was a nice memory each time she enjoyed them. If I know someone collects vintage teapots I bring them one 🙂 I get much joy out of it. Just got rid of such item and two vintage teacups. I am so happy 🙂
I was under some pressure to get rid of my grandmothers things, esp after my father had died, and my mothe moved, i moved, households kept being packed. I unintentionally got rid of some things i didnt want to, european teacups, brussels and germany things. I kept many but still angry i dont have them now.
I explain to kiddo what these things are so he doesn’t get taken advantage of later.

Many of us do what you describe. When we give things away it is up to the person receiving if they keep it or not. My daughter gave one of my grandmother’s crystal bowl away because she had two. She wanted it and then does not value it. Was up to me the giver to let go it was now in another persons hands . I want to give to people who value for what it is but realize it never will represent to them what it represented to me.
On the positive side, we are lucky to be able to give and receive at all.

The Board of Twitter is bound BY LAW to conduct itself in the fiduciary interests of the shareholders.
They know that if they turn down Musk’s offer, he dumps the stock (he told them he would, in writing) and the stocks tank.

Frantically backpedaling from the outrage (and deleting evidence), she is now saying, “For the event mentioned in the tweet, I was performing a blood draw on a patient and during our conversation they had shown dismay at my pronoun pin,” Del Rosario wrote, according to the university newspaper. “I calmly shared my thoughts about pronouns and did not escalate the situation further. When I was doing the blood draw, I missed the first time due to my inexperience as a student, and per our policy, my supervisor performed the successful blood draw the second time. During this encounter, I never intended to harm the patient.”
“I am truly sorry for poorly representing our school and our health system. I will reflect on responsible social media use as a professional and my duty to care for all my patients, regardless of any differences of belief,” she concluded.

So, let me get this straight…..in a thread about transphobia — a virtue-signalling bullshit amongst woke assholes — a student laughs about abusing a patient.
Let’s talk about real phobias for a second. I haz one. I freak out about being punctured — and it is a mental illness (technically a neurosis) that complicates my life. If I have a needle that is about to puncture my body, I might as well have a rattlesnake perched on my chest, and if something goes through my skin, it might as well be a fang lodged in my cheek. I’ve been known to stop breathing for minutes and lock my muscles. I scare phlebotomists.
As a second-order reaction to this, I generally refuse anesthetic for dental work — including crown prep. This is painful, and if done outside the context of legitimate dental work would be a slam-dunk violation of Geneva Conventions against torture. I’ve done — IIRC — FOUR crowns without anesthetic because I’d rather experience the pain than take the needle. (As a fun aside, I’ve had several occasions when people have tried to talk me out of it — IT’S A MENTAL ILLNESS THAT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE!!!! — if you try the “it’s so tiny, you won’t feel it” argument, you may add vomit to your passed-out patient….I’ve done the pain, and it is easy compared to the phobia.
This monster should not be an MD. Not because she missed a blood draw and had to have someone else complete it for her, which is her current excuse. She should not be an MD because she confuses a real mental illness for a virtue-signalling line of political bullshit. She should not be an MD because she brags in one case and lies to cover it up. She should not be an MD because she lacks empathy for her patients. She should not be an MD because she wears stupid pronoun badges to cause conflict when her patients need help.
She should do a couple of crowns without anesthetic to feel how much some of her patients hate being punctured, and how much her “sloppiness” (current excuse) or malice is appreciated.

You have my condolences for your suffering. Nothing is worse than an irrational situation imposed on a rational person because all the tools at his/her disposal do not and cannot help resolve it.
By contrast, I have a very good relationship with my dentist. He knows I feel everything and does his best to minimize the pain duration/amplitude.
It’s not irrational to insist on oral health. This last crown was pretty obvious after two of the cusps of a molar fell out and are in a bowl two feet to my right.
I’m fortunate to have a rational relationship with a dentist I trust — Dr. Klein (408)371-1313 .
I’m not looking forward to finding a dentist as technically competent…..and then training him/her to work within my proclivities.

That being said, being stuck when you have issues is torture. I have TINY veins that pop and roll, and the techs rarely get me on a first stick. When I had my wisdom teeth taken out, it took eight. I looked like a junkie.
Helpful hint — pound about 96 ounces of liquid, starting about an hour and a half prior to the jab. You’ll (a) increase the size of your veins, (b) increase blood volume, and (c) decrease blood viscosity. You may need to fine-tune timing issues, as there is a large difference between relieving this saturation before leaving the facility and relieving this saturation before leaving the phlebotomist’s work station.
I completely understand and empathize. How I wish I could get through a dental procedure without needing the 4% (strong) version of Novocaine. God alone knows how I’m going to get through the colonoscopy next month — the very thought of a general anesthetic, however “of short duration and will wear off quickly”, is enough to cause panic.
Colonoscopy is easy. Just say no.

Best sleep I’ve ever had was during mine. They called my wife into recovery to wake me up I was sleeping so long and sound. She said all I would say as I was waking up was, “This is soooooo goooooooood!” 😂. The staff enjoyed a good laugh at my expense. Didn’t care, I felt the most rested I had in years.
When I saw the photos of the large, benign polyp they removed I was very happy I did it. Hated the prep, but it was definitely worth doing.

Both positions make sense, but ARE INCOMPATIBLE on the surface.

The number, type, length, speed, etc., of transactions is not the problem. Such power is cheap, distributable, and (usually) easily redundant.
What DOES build up quickly is the need for storage, which, albeit ever cheaper, is not free. A multi-tiered storage archeticture allows for rarely- (or even just once-) accessed tweets to percolate to the bottom of the storage structure, while more popular tweets, etc. bubble upwards to the top, faster and probably more redundant storage.
It’s not impossible, but it’s not cheap. And the gubmint is home for many, MANY incompatible systems that still, after all these years, don’t (easily) communicate with each other, read: I wouldn’t look to them for the quickest/best solution, despite the various NSA build-outs all over the place.
(One place the NSA could “pay back” the people is offereing a backup service… if they really do have everything backed up…. OK, just kidding…)….

Given SD’s hypothesis, NO PLATFORM of this type is viable, unless it is hosted by, and under the control of, the United States government. At least, that’s how I read what he is stating. The ONLY servers/infrastructure massive enough to do what Twitter does exists ONLY in our government, is his scenario.
So if SD is correct, Twitter is hosted on government infrastructure, and Truth Social literally can’t grow to as large as TW, because the infrastructure to host it doesn’t exist outside the government.

If you’ve any lingering belief in the worth of the mainstream media’s authority, you’ve no doubt watched them interviewing various old fogey generals who’re offering various opinions on how the Red Army is really screwing up the Ukrainian campaign. It only takes a moment’s reflection to realise they all generalled lightning quick wins against essentially third world armies which were followed by decades long agonisiong guerrilla wars of resistance which ended up in humiliating retreats like the roof of the US embassy in Saigon in ’75 or more recently Kabul airport in ’21.
The West picks its enemies carefully and always uses the same quick win strategy every time. A rolling three day air offensive by high tech airplanes piloted by men wired up on three day sleep-free jags of some variety of meth-amphetamine until they keel over to be replaced by the next tranche of wired bots. Once the command and control and infrastructure has been pulverised, the opposing army having sheltered from air raids for days, out of food and water and with no coherent command structure left surrender in hordes.
There’s elements of that method to making war in Russia’s approach but there is a significant difference too. The accent on how they make war is not on totally destroying the enemy’s support infrastructure but just the critical juncture points they know the enemy needs. What they concentrate on is destroying the enemies army, not their bricks and mortar. The way the current conflict in the Ukraine is a classic example of the approach.
Formations in modern armies are usually roughly classified into As, Bs or Cs. A class A formation are usually young, volunteers, highly-motivated, well trained and equipped. A B unit is usually conscripts, lowish motivation and just trying to serve out their period of conscription without doing anything heroic like getting their heads shot off.
The C units are what’s left. Older, sometimes on special diets, armed with obsolescent equipment, a dumping ground for incompetent officers and basically only fit for sedentary duties like garrisoning cities captured by the A class units. At a certain point, even the village idiot in every hamlet in the Donbass knew the Russians were coming in and it’d be via the eastern part of the Ukraine. And indeed, the initial invasion was from the East and the Ukrainians reacted exactly as the Russians expected by rushing all their A units eastwards to blunt the soviet advance.
Once the Ukrainian A units were totally committed to the engagement, the trap was sprung. Russia invaded from the north and indirectly from the south with the full intention of enveloping 60,000 Ukrainian troopers which they’ve succeeded in doing. That was what they called phase one. It’s U.S.Grant’s philosophy about how to fight a war against any enemy – you totally destroy their army. Find ’em, fix ’em and then destroy them. The apparent pause in the war at the moment is just the Red Army assembling massive overwhelming force before eliminating the massive pocket. It’ll kick off anyday soon.
In a smaller way, the port city of Mariupol has just fallen to the same massive encirclement tactic with over a thousand Ukrainian marines, that’s to say A troops, surrendering and what’s left of the Azov brigade and some foreign mercenaries holding out in a sprawling steelworks because they’ve got a pretty good idea the Russians are in no mood to be accepting any surrendering from the likes of them them. Russians have long memories especially about the torture and murder of Russian POWS.
There are some other military fictions you’ve been fed by western propaganda who only seem to regurgitate handouts from the Ukrainian war ministry. There was never an attempt by the Russians to assault and capture the city of Kiev. They merely surrounded it to prevent it sending any help to the 60 thousand troops trapped in the Donbass enclave. Any “retreat” from around Kiev was merely Russia rotating in fresh troops to replace those who’d sliced through Ukrainian forces supposed to defend the capital.
In case you haven’t realised it, the performance by the Ukrainian army has been piss poor. They’ve been badly generalled and promised help that never appeared by their leaders who were lying through their teeth. Courtesy of a lying western press, the Ukrainians appear to be winning on all fronts but the truth is exactly the bloody opposite, with bloody being the operative word. The fantasy of a small plucky army heroically throwing back a massive flood of Red Army forces is even starting to crumble. What the western press were touting as an invasion force of 150,000 Russians now looks to be about 60,000 men, a fraction of what the Russians can call on but enough to do the job.
What you have to get through your head is that despite an avalanche of anti-Russian propaganda in the western media, the Russian people are very happy at how their boss man is conducting this war, hence the 83% approval rating he currently enjoys. That’s a number the western leaders trying to kick off a real shooting war against Russia can only dream of.
When the Donbass pocket is eliminated, the Russians may start winding down their war machine but my feeling is that ending the war might make for some determined efforts by the West rather than Russia. The Minsk 1 & 2 agreements were supposed to settle things after the 2014 war but since the Ukrainian abetted by the West totally ignored the concords and kept creeping NATO eastwards, my feeling is Russia will not be interested in a Minsk 3 accord that’ll just turn out to be yet another pause before the necessary next invasion of the Ukraine in ten years time.
The Russian strategic goals were always well defined and stated, legitimising the annexation of the Crimea, setting up the Donbasas republics, de-nazification and securing the Mariupal port city, but with the way the Ukrainian clown leadership is pissing around with peace talks, I might just be easier to take over the Ukraine completely, throwing some western bits to the Poles and some southern bits to the Hungarians. The other alternative is to adopt the western style of war – simply build a a north/south border chopping off eastern Ukraine and then use remote missile technology to bomb the Ukraine infrastructure back into the stone age.
One of the nastier surprises produced by this conflict is the Russian usage of some weapons we thought were basically hypothetical but have turned out to be very real. Things such as hyper-sonic missiles the West has absolutely no defense against. We don’t even have that weapon, never mind any means of stopping it getting through.
The neo-cons and neo-liberals got their cold war against the East block but I don’t think they’ve yet to realise the havoc it’ll wreak on western economies, but my feeling is they’ll begin to realise it in the coming year along with something else, we’re going to need Russian help to climb out of the economic hole we’ve dug our self into. If Putin turns off the tap of natural gas and oil to western Europe, the dominoes start to fall and there’s no stopping them.
Turning off this war to Russia’s satisfaction may prove to be a difficult proposition.

Ukrainian forces hit the Russian flagship Moskva with two Neptune missiles in the Black Sea on Thursday, causing the vessel to sink the next day, the Pentagon said on Friday.

One time, I interviewed for Controller of a bankrupt retail operation — a fairly good-sized one. The CEO had been hauled-in as a favor to an investor and was a Brit. We got on fairly well, although the interview was somewhat surreal.

I fumbled a bit, then he told me the right answer, then he told me enough that I was convinced there was one right answer and it was the one he told me. In retrospect, I got a few thousand dollars’ worth of high-level business consulting from the guy, for free, and did very well despite not getting the job.
So, I’m sitting there and thinking “free cash flow”, “realizable assets in excess of short-term debt”, “factorable receivables”, “solid banking relationships” — all sorts of things….and, BTW, they’re not utterly stupid. I’d been finance in a couple of tight financial situations before, and some of these were tested and proven. And then the guy rearranged my head.
“None of that,” he said. “The single most important asset when reorganizing a damaged enterprise is that your word must be good.”
He continued, “this company had over-extended by purchasing 28 semi-custom trucks from a vendor. I had a face-to-face meeting with their management and told them that they would take 22 of them back and let us keep six. They initially said that they’d make us keep and pay for all of them. I showed them how I could make them unsecured creditors and pay them $0.22 on the dollar for 28 trucks, or they could take 22 of them back and eat the slight use the 22 had experienced and own the trucks. Further, once I got past this bad patch, I told them that I’d any trucks needed for future business would be purchased from them. So they took back 22 trucks.”
If your word’s no damned good, it doesn’t matter what you say or do. After yanking oil and gas leases in his first days in “office”, FJB’s word is no damned good. Nobody’s going to commit good money after bad with him in office.
