Note that start times and durations of observations are specified down to the second; the first item in the list starts at 21:33:24 Zulu, runs for 25 minutes, 56 seconds, then at 22:03:45 it starts on the next item.
This thing is a priceless scientific resource; it won’t be allowed any down time not absolutely necessary for maintenance (mirror alignment must periodically be checked, for instance). And of course it takes time to rotate the thing from one target to the next, so no doubt they spend a lot of time figuring out which sequence spends the least time on just moving JWST; a sort of “traveling salesman” problem. (And note that Jupiter’s moons are considered “moving.” They’re in orbit about Jupiter, Jupiter is in orbit about the sun, we are too–Jupiter and the moons move across the sky and the telescope must track that motion perfectly. Which it could not do if we were as clueless about physics as some pseudoscientists like to bray.)
To return to the current instance, the JWST will be examining Jupiter’s moons Io and Ganymede from about 5:30 PM to 8PM ET, using spectroscopy in both near and mid infrared…someone wants to know what they’re made of, methinks. The second entry is actually to look away from Ganymede a bit (I don’t know how to interpret how much, but it says “OFFSET” and “+20N” so I figure it’s an offset, and if I really want to know I need to figure out how much an N is and multiply by 20. Or maybe N means north and the unit is implicit…)
Note that it’s all spectroscopy. Most of the instrument modes are spectroscopy of some type or another.
That’s because spectroscopy is the astrophysicist’s power tool. It is impossible to overstate how important spectroscopy is to astronomy and astrophysics.
After you spread the light out into a spectrum of its component frequencies:
Where is the peak intensity? BOOM. Now you know the temperature.
Are there any dark bands, or is it bright stripes? Either way, BOOM. Now you know what it’s made of, because every substance absorbs or emits certain characteristic wave lengths.
Are those dark bands or bright stripes a bit off from where we would normally expect them? BOOM! Now you now know how fast the object is approaching or receding, because of Doppler shift.
Are the bands or bright stripes a bit fatter than you would expect? BOOM! Now you know the object is rotating. One side is moving away, shifting its part of the band to a lower frequency; the other side is moving towards you, shifting its part of the band to a higher frequency, making the band or stripe fatter than it would otherwise be.
(If you can look for a while, or come back later) Do the dark bands move, from one time to a future time? BOOM! Now you know the object is being orbited by something else (or it is orbiting something–technically they are the same thing!); that puts a wobble in its motion; speeding it up and slowing it down as seen from here.
If you’ve ever wondered how we can possibly know what some other star is made of, when we can’t possibly collect a sample, that’s how. If you wonder how we can tell things are moving towards or away from us and how fast, even when it’s billions of trillions of miles away, that’s how. And how we know a star–which looks like a point of light in even this telescope–is rotating when there’s no detail to see moving left to right (or whichever way), that’s how.
Or for that matter how fast a galaxy spins even though it’s so big it takes a quarter of a billion years to do so. (We can’t see the motion, and trying would be a quadrillion times duller than watching paint dry or Joe Biden try to think.) That’s how we know.
And it seems like people keep coming up with clever ways to use spectroscopy for other things, surprising things.
We wouldn’t know jack schiff about the universe, compared to what we do know, without spectroscopy.

A key point here (which I’m sure you understand but others read what I have to say from time to time) is that Newtonian physics isn’t wrong; it’s right as far as it goes because it is what General Relativity reduces to in “normal” cases. No need to drag out difficult to solve tensors when Newton will give the same answers.
It’s knowing when you can, or cannot do this, that’s part of science; the same applies for those occasions where you can momentarily approximate the Earth as flat. You can do it for scenarios the size of an auditorium and talk of parabolic trajectories; you cannot do it for orbiting satellites, there you work with ellipses or parts thereof. Artillery-type problems is about where the dividing line is.
That’s actually a wonderful point, which can be used to break the “flat earth” arguments! “Flat Earth” is essentially “still right” within limitations, and that’s part of why it’s mentally so appealing and politically so successful. Those cases are more directly appealing to our senses, and our own error-checking, which we can trust in a world of diabolical “intelligence agencies” which seek to break trust with disinformation.
Our own government under globalist attack has created a war zone where both sides fight by diminishing TRUST in the other side’s values.

Steve, I’ve started reading GK Chesterton’s The Ball & the Cross & thought of you based on some things in the intro.
On page v the writer of the 1995 Dover version Intro quotes William F. Buckley: “The duel between Christianity & atheism is the most important in the world. I further believe that the struggle between individualism & collectivism is the same struggle reproduced on a higher level.”
In Buckley’s statement above it is interesting that he appears to align Christianity with individualism & atheism w/ collectivism. Though you as a professed atheist with significant biblical knowledge appear to align with the “Christian” view of individualism 😉
On page viii “For Chesterton, the arms of the cross stretch into the universe & beyond the universe into infinite realms that transcend the world we know. The ball, in contrast, is finite & self-contained. Rationalism without faith goes round & round in circles, never escaping from the material cosmos.”
On page x “The blank walls of the cell represent the blank metaphysics of atheism. They are smooth & continuous like the surface of the ball on St. Paul’s.”
I’m only into the early chapters of this book but apparently it is a tale woven in a way that presents a theist vs an atheist in numerous “hilarious” situations & is loosely reflective of a public debate that GKC had had w/ a prominent atheist of his day.
I wanted to read something by GKC recalling that CS Lewis greatly admired him…& of course I loosely share his Christian faith, but by no means his Catholicism 🙂

If Wm. F. Buckley said that (and I’ve little doubt that he did), he’s engaging in a fallacy here, the false alternative. He’s trying to equate Christianity with individualism and to equate collectivism with atheism, trying to force two groups he finds distasteful into the same bucket.
I’ve known plenty of individualist atheists and plenty of blatantly collectivist Christians.
[And to (futilely) try forestall the inevitable “oh but they’re not really Christians” comments, I regard as a Christian anyone who professes to have taken Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. I can do no more than that. Christians tell me all the time they’re not perfect Christians and I certainly get that; perhaps these “not really Christians” are just more Christians who are not perfect Christians. The point is, one Christian telling me another Christian isn’t really a Christian is an attempt to turn your community’s issues into my epistemic problem.]
And historically Christianity has often been plenty collectivist; much anger against non-Christians is fear that they will stain “the community” somehow. An individualist is concerned with harm to individual people.
An individualist believes in self ownership, not just he of himself, but other people of themselves. Full stop. Individualism as such says nothing about whether a god exists; it’s a different question. However, someone who believes in God and believes that that god owns them cannot be an individualist even if they also believe that god is allowing them to be free. If you are a slave but your owner gives you free rein, you’re still a slave.
In any case, we know what Buckley did when confronted with atheist individualists: He smeared them and campaigned against them; look at the treatment he gave Ayn Rand (and his rag continues to be proud of that treatment). Apparently when push came to shove, with him ONLY the Christianity mattered. His equating of christianity=individualism and collectivism=atheism was a post-facto rationalization.
Totally agreed. I think Buckley-Balls was way off here. I would even go so far as to say that the individualism-collectivism dichotomy’s tendency to “fail” toward individualism in Christianity as a whole (I would call it the “divine freedom which even allows schismatism”) is derivative of a HIGHER teaching principle of the universe, which Ayn Rand correctly identifies – one can evade reality, but not its consequences. The “teacher of truth” – or the Spirit of Truth, if one wishes – is a built-in. And the consequences are much further-reaching than that entry thought, IMO.
The interesting relationship to me is Christ and Peter, in this respect. Christ had a deep conscious understanding of both Truth and Consequence – Peter’s was more instinctive, and occasionally wrong when he overthought or underthought things. Nonetheless, Christ trusted him to “get it” fundamentally, and he did.

There are places in scripture where we are described as being “slaves” to God but then the free will paradox would seem to (at least partially) negate that…many places in scripture seem paradoxical to me (example “those not for us are against us” vs. “those not against us are for us”–as a Westerner it’s very difficult to reconcile these)…
For me personally I experience the tension of being a “slave” to God & being a strong proponent of individualism. It’s also very difficult to divorce my “Americanism” from my understanding of Christianity.
Historical “collectivism” in biblical Christianity was Voluntary, which is very different from that imposed by the State. The story of Ananias & Saphira is instructive in this. They lied about the funds they were giving to the ministry. The condemnation of them was for lying, not for choosing to hold onto some of their (own) funds. The money was theirs to do with as they wished, it was not owed to nor owned by the ministry. In that sense it would seem that the “having all things in common” aspect of the early church was different from what we might call collectivism now.
Much of that early collectivism (the communes) was of course in the belief that the Return was imminent…any moment now.
No point in fussing about putting stuff aside for next year if there isn’t going to *be* a next year.
Obviously they were mistaken about that, and (most) Christians now know they have to live in this world, for years if not decades.
Yes. We Christians are to be “in this world but not of it” which is an interesting dichotomy. We Hope to be gone tomorrow but (theoretically) plan like we, & our progeny, will be here for generations to come 🙂

What I’m trying to get at is, just because overuse of sunscreen turns out to lead to Vitamin D deficiency, which thereby hurts immune systems, that doesn’t mean it was created *as part of the depop plan* as you seemed to think. It could just have been a conveniently “positive’ (from their point of view) contributing factor.

Knowing a bit of the history of sunscreen chemistry and the history of depopulation, there is an interesting time overlap.
I would say that the flurry of RECENT sunscreen chemistry and biology interest is definitely “post-depop-plan”. It’s also EU-driven.
If it were in fact found that the various recent complexities of sunscreen research, formulation, and regulation fit Vitamin D suppression better than the various rationales given, it might then be forensically useful to look at why things got the way they did.
Much of the development and regulation is most likely related to MONEY and PATENTS. But if there was a Vitamin D angle BEHIND all that, using money and patents as lures and manipulators to achieve a deeper objective, it would be interesting – and very analogous to what happened in COVID and vaccines.
As it stands, though, it’s certainly easier and more productive to see the hands of any vitamin D suppression elsewhere, such as simple recommendations.
But yes – it is definitely USEFUL to promote low D levels. As many doctors have noted, the CDC should have done lots of things around Vitamin D and zinc related to COVID, and they didn’t.
THAT failure to act was huge and obvious. Promotion of sunscreens, etc., seems much more long-term and subtle.

I personally Hate using sunscreen, though regret not using it when in intense midday sun for extended periods of time, like at my parents’ 60th anniversary Tigers game. Usually I avoid the midday sun & then go out later w/out sunscreen & enjoy the lake or whatever 🙂
Myself, I have found a wide-brimmed hat to be absolutely essential.
I never go out without a hat but it is usually a ball cap. Hubby uses a wide brim with a neck ‘flap’ to protect the back of his neck. He is fighting skin cancer (pre-cancer stage so he is fine.)
I’ve never been much for hats either…was too vain about my hair, ironically!

If you get burned, Vitamin E oil (large capsule and poke the end with a pin) works wonders in killing the pain and healing the skin.

Sunscreen was not needed when you were outdoors all the time. You gradually tanned as the spring wore on and that gave you adequate protection.
To prove that hypothesis, I switched from short sleeves to sleeveless & was out for a couple hours and got a GLORIOUS BURN on my upper arms in late May this year. 🙄 You would think I would KNOW better but I really wasn’t out that long.

I just ran into this EXACT same “defense” on the Agnes Buzyn “banning” of HCQ from OTC status (back to prescription) in France, prior to COVID.
The strawman allegation was that she banned it personally in January of 2020, right when Didier Raoult was having success with HCQ against SARS-CoV-2. The REALITY is that the “ban” merely took effect then – but in fact HCQ was banned by a group under her control in (IIRC) November of 2019.

This says nothing about whether they were involved or had prior knowledge of the attacks; it says another meme-maker is putting untrue information out.

In my opinion they tried to shorten the meme by compression, rather than tell the whole story.
Here’s my thinking.
Construction began in the late 60s, and the first tenants moved into the north and south towers in the early 70’s, so the idea that ZIM was there on the lower floors starting in 1976 makes sense.

Holding a lease for 30 years is not the same as a 30 year lease, because a lease can be renewed. My guess is that ZIM was on their third 10-year lease. The point about 30 years vs. 10 years is a legitimate argument favoring the meme maker, but they can’t say a 30 year lease, because it’s just like a refinance to a new term. Thus the weasel words “lease held for 30 years.
IMO it would have been better to say “30-yr tenant fled in the middle of their 10-year lease”, but whatever.
The full story is far more indicting than the meme.

Patriot sees a meme. Patriot tries to verify it, and finds that certain elements of it are not true. Patriot knows there is a bigger issue within the meme (in this case, who was involved in 9/11). Patriot posts the meme along with the info that the details are false but there might be an underlying truth about the big picture. Then people can dig on the pertinent information instead of getting distracted by the false details, which, IMO, are presented in an overly dramatized fashion that is calculated to get a certain reaction. We should not be giving them that reaction. We should be looking for the truth.

Today is 77th Anniversary of US dropping atom bomb on Hiroshima

And I shall take this opportunity to expound.
There are, basically, two kinds of fission bombs; we dropped one each on Japan.
The first one ever detonated was made out of plutonium 239, (i.e., 145 neutrons + 94 protons = 239 nucleons). Although plutonium is effectively non-existent in nature, it’s relatively easy to make plutonium-239 in a breeder reactor; the trick is to pull it out before too much plutonium 240 is made; Pu-240 will dampen the chain reaction. The trick with a plutonium bomb is that in order to detonate the Pu-239 must be compressed, by an explosion of TNT say, and that has to be done precisely or the plutonium will simply squirt out to the side instead of compressing. A huge part of the Manhattan project was devoted to making sure we could do a precision detonation of high explosives like this. This is not the one that was dropped on Hiroshima, but it was the first kind detononated, because we blew one up at the Trinity site near Alamagordo NM to make sure it worked…that was the very first nuclear detonation we ever did.
The second kind, used at Hiroshima, was a uranium 235 bomb (92 protons, 143 neutrons). Here the difficulties are the opposite. It is hard (as in Cast-Iron-Bitch hard) to make uranium 235. A large fraction of a percent of all uranium is U-235, and uranium isn’t all that rare. But getting it separated from the U-238 majority is very, very difficult; you can’t use chemical reactions as you would getting plutonium out of uranium reactor fuel, because chemical reactions won’t separate uranium from itself. The Manhattan project did it by creating a gaseous compound and using the barely 1% difference in weight to centrifuge them apart. The effect is slight, the output from one centrifuge has to be fed into another, and then that one’s output fed into another, hundreds of stages; also the reject from the first centrifuge has to be done again, because it still contains almost as much U-235 as it did before. (If you hear about the Iranian nuclear program’s centrifuges, this is what they are talking about. I wish them much luck, all of it bad.) However, once you’ve concentrated the U-235 to where it’s most of the sample, building the bomb itself is almost child’s play; simply ensure that two small masses are brought together quickly into one big mass, one big enough the chain reaction takes hold. They didn’t bother with a test; they stuck the thing on the Enola Gay and brightened Japan’s day with it.
Nagasaki got the second plutonium bomb.
Which kind do we use today? Depends on how you look at it. Technically, neither: Our bombs today are hydrogen fusion bombs. However, to set one of those off we actually need a fission detonation to trigger it, generating the immense pressures and densities fusion must have to run (trying to get these without using a fission bomb is why we still don’t have fusion power). So we need a “trigger” and we use plutonium fission for the trigger, so our current bombs are most akin to the Nagasaki type; it’s just got some hydrogen and lithium with it to give it an extra, big, boost. If you ever hear about the “plutonium triggers” for our current nukes, that’s what they’re talking about (it’s not a little bang switch).
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were roughly equivalent, each, to about 20 kilotons (20 thousand metric tonnes) of TNT. Our current bombs are regularly in the hundreds or even thousands of kilotons (a thousand kilotons is a megaton). The record is held by the Tsar Bomba of the Soviet Union at 50,000 kilotons.
A relative of mine was at the test site at Alamogordo, NM, in the military. I always noticed that the skin on his face looked a little different and thought he might have had skin cancer or something. But about a year before he died, I learned that his skin damage was the result of the bomb test. I wish I knew more details. As far as I know, he did not get cancer, and he lived to a ripe old age.
