And the O rings have nothing to do with the liquid fuel system. Those were on the solid rocket boosters (strapped on).
As it happened, they quickly figured out the issue was those rings, and cold weather. A lot of astronauts volunteered to go up on the next shuttle launch…as in. launch another one ASAP…so long as it was a warm weather launch.
We still had to wait two years.

OK, I should have realized…there might be *Different* O-rings in the liquid fuel system…but those suckers would have to be very different–they’d have to be explicitly designed to deal with near-absolute-zero temperatures. Which means they aren’t rubber. But I think, honestly, that plumbing is all welded.
The Morton Thiokol O rings were actually between the segments of the bodies of the solid rocket boosters.
SRBs are VERY simple, mechanically. You take a hollow tube, close off the front end, and stuff the thing full of solid rocket propellant. You run a hole down the axis of the thing to increase surface area. (In fact I think the hole’s cross section is star shaped–a lot of engineering goes into determining the best shape; the idea is to not have the surface area change drastically during the burn, so that the g force is *relatively* uniform during the burn).
At the back end of the thing you put the nozzle.
Then, when you are *absolutely sure* you want to GO, you light it.
Once lit, it cannot be shut down. It will go until empty. That’s a disadvantage. But, there are no pumps, no valves, no plumbing, nothing, it’s just a big “stick” you light off, like a road flare only much bigger and MUCH faster burning.
If you’ve ever watched a video of a shuttle launch, they fire up the main engines (liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen) for a few seconds…and only then do they light the SRBs. Those few seconds are to make sure the liquid engines are working right; they can still abort the launch if there’s a glitch. But once the SRBs are lit, you are *committed*.
Anyhow, the Mortion Thiokol O-rings were for the joints between sections of the booster bodies–they couldn’t make them one continuous tube, they had to join multiple shorter tubes.

We are way past the end of the current interglacial and have been gradually sliding into the next glacial period. However unlike the change from glacial to interglacial, which is rapid, the change the other way is slow, due to the saw-tooth pattern of the change.
The height of the current interglacial was 6000 to 8000 years ago, when in many places the sea level was 9 – 18 feet higher.
The breakthrough of the Mediterranean Sea into the Black Sea happened during this time, when the Bosporus was created and changed the Black Sea from a freshwater lake to a saltwater sea.
There is also archeological evidence in India, at the west coast, were the Rahn of Kutch was flooded and the remains of what today would be called an inland harbor, was found at Lothal, which is the remains of a city of the Indus – Sarasvati (also known as the Harappan) civilization.
The story of the flooding of Dwarka, which is in the same area, from the Mahabharata epic, does fall in the same period.
On the other coast of India at Poombuhar in Tamil Nadu an even more remarkable archeological discovery was made. This discovery traces the position of port facilities near the entrance of the Kaveri River, back to 10000 years ago, 15 miles into sea, from the current coastline. The sea level was about 300 feet lower at that time.
They needed to change the position of this facility further and further inland and even inland to what currently is the coastline (which happend to fall in the same time frame of 6000 years ago), as the sea level rose.

I think you and they are spot on, Gail. My logic meter has said this since the 70’s. The universe was completed to be finite, not infinite. Alpha and Omega. The sun is a part of that reality. We just don’t know the precise timing aspect of its cycles and the length of its very existence as a heater, although many try to speculate and provide answers for the research grant money.
One of the reasons for my BIMD was to venture a bit into the coal weeds. We sit on the largest known coal reserves in the world by a lot. We also know how and use emission free coke furnaces. Have since the 1970s. There is tech available and more that could be developed to handle the waste and gaseous releases for massive usage with power plants. But our leaders refuse to do it and make it out to be evil along with petroleum and NG. Why is Gates and the rest of the scum buying up farmland? Yep, we know. Control the supply of all essentials, introduce the depop methods, and pick who you want to survive as the real climate change happens.
The sad thing is I hate cold weather climates. So I am hoping the Lord comes to get me before it gets bad. 😀

For a while there the local coin shop was at least not selling gold for 200 over spot–they were at 75. But generally when the paper market takes a big dump, the physical market is slow to follow.
Silver eagles have always sold for a considerable premium over spot. I buy one a year…but that’s because they are also coins with a date on them and I want to keep my continuous run of dates current. Which reminds me I need to buy one this year. This is probably as good a time as any.
They are not pushing electric cars in order to protect the environment.
They are pushing them so people’s freedom of movement [go when you want to go] will be extremely limited. They are pushing trains because that’s their best way to control long distance travel.

I DO have to hand it to the South Coast Air Quality Management District…compared to 1989 the air is a LOT clearer in SoCal than it used to be. I know some of that is cleaner burning cars, but surely not all of it; even in 1989 there were plenty of clean burning cars on the road.
It’s about scheduling YOUR travel. Buses aren’t Uber; you go when the bus goes. Same with trains.

There is a concept of a sort of light rail without the rail–a dedicated bus route where the bus has the right of way always, and they come every five minutes or so. There’s no formal schedule, because they are so frequent. (Bus rapid transit, I think it’s called.) If done properly, it gets a ton of riders, tens of thousands a day per line. It’s a lot cheaper to build than light rail, too, so sometimes if a city gets all the light rail right of ways, but can’t afford to actually lay the rail and buy the trains, they’ll just do one of these instead.
Beware, though, that some places will try to sell ordinary bus lines as this, because mass transit tends to be a special interest boondoggle.
But even a system that works well is…out of your control. And in today’s Amerika I wouldn’t trust it for that reason. I can see it being shut down to quell discontent in a city by immobilizing people.

It resembles the problem that some of the electric car owners have: there is a smaller 12V car battery that powers lights and instrumentation and electronics, and which is charged during travelling, much the same as in a regular car. But like the ones in these latter, that battery does fail after a few years, and then the car won’t start. Even if the main battery is fully charged.

Years and years ago, when I was in High School, I got to take German classes at a local Community College for college credit. (The High School didn’t offer German.) Anyway, they came in one day very proud of themselves. They’d taken an image from the school’s photo archives, scaled it, and used photolithography to create a master, then run off a lithograph as a gift for Elfie.
When they unrolled it for her to see, she exclaimed, “Guptka Pinteh! The most beautiful lamasery in Western Tibet!” (She’d been there.) Hearing this in a German class probably set my progress backwards by a month.
Anyway, I was at an estate sale this afternoon, and there was an old book that appeared to have that same lamasery outlined on its cover. In this post-literate age, books were only a dollar, so I bought it……not for the future, but for this one dose of confusion from 40 years ago.
Anyone knowing the actual name of the most beautiful lamasery in Western Tibet is invited to let me know — I had to go for some rough phonetic version and I’ve always wondered.

The Fiancee is re-watching the BBC TV version of “The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy.”

So, I got another “spare router” today — a tp-link ER605. That puts the number in-house up to six with four currently in-use. Five are owned, with one provided by ISP with an integrated modem.
Had an interesting conversation with a sales-kid at Central Computer. I explained how I couldn’t rely on the ISP router for jack-diddly, so I put a business router under it to provide some isolation. I then fed two regular wireless routers — a secure side (with the wireless turned off) and an insecure side (because the Fiancee never updates her software).
The sales guy says he knows how that goes — he’s got a low-feature wireless router hanging off for his family members that don’t know security from a hatbox. I ask him the model, and he says he’s flashed the firmware — I ask if it’s OpenWRT and he says it’s DD-WRT because there wasn’t an OpenWRT image available.
We’re probably 35 years apart in age, but I could tell we were speaking the same language.
I told him I was singularly unimpressed about using an app to tune my router, or having any of its configuration accessible through the cloud. And I really didn’t need gaming-level wireless with multiple antennas. OTOH, I wanted reasonable control over what was going on over my wires. He recommended this one. TP-Link is trying to push their “Omada” centralized management BS, but it can be curtailed.
Having now accessed some of their configuration information, I’m amused to find that a bunch of their options are labelled “standalone only” (as in their Omada can’t touch it). I have a feeling that their Marketing Department can be stood up against the wall after the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation is done with it.
I’m looking at standing up the ER605 in place of the “business router”, then reflashing the old “business router” (it’s out of support from its manufacturer). If I don’t feel like putting it back, my other spare router needs reflashing and might fit there (though it is a bit wireless-centric). I can borrow the ER605 as my “secure-side” router while I reflash the “regular” wireless routers……
It was such a pleasure to encounter a youth that was nearly as paranoid as I am.
