You just reminded me of something that happened when I was probably in junior high school.
Some friends and I went to see a movie, I think it was called Hangar 13 (just checked, it was Hangar 18, released in 1980).
It’s not a great movie, but it wasn’t terrible. Just kind of slow, as I remember it.
There is a point in the movie where one of the main characters says to another character “Don’t just stand there with your hands in your pockets!”
There was a brief pause in the dialogue as the characters stared at each other. The moment seemed just right.
So I replied out loud, loud enough so everyone in the theater could hear me, “Yeah, what he said… stop playing pocket pool!”
And the whole theater erupted in laughter… it was the best part of the whole movie 😂 🤣 😂

The Softsoap Chronicles — the end of a saga….
So, as it turns out, we had 1/3 of a bottle of the original Softsoap that hadn’t gone full whorehouse. We also ordered some imitation Softsoap from Amazon —
— that’s their house brand. It says, “if you like Softsoap, you’ll like this.” Amazingly enough, it hasn’t gone overscented yet.
We could get unscented in Sprouts’ house brand, Whole Paycheck 365, Seventh Generation, or Walgreen’s house brand — but none of those really scaled because you had to buy them one small hand-pump bottle at a time.
The Target house brand was just as perfumed as the new Softsoap. You can also get Dial in bulk, so I got a sample of “Spring Water”, figuring (incorrectly) that it would be mild. Evidently, this spring is sacred to the goddess Diabetes, as the soap smells unpleasantly sweet — and the odor is clinging to my hands so I can smell it while I drink beer.
So we’ll flush the highly scented stuff through in the bathrooms and use our remaining mild Softsoap in the kitchen, then use the Amazon bulk soap in the kitchen thereafter.
I need to go try and wash the Spring Water Dial off my hands….
But MY big question is whether you tested the Amazon imitation Softsoap or whether there are good reviews that vouch for the smell coming in close to the original.
We ordered it, opened it, and it is slightly different from original softsoap but nowhere as obnoxious as new whorehouse softsoap. What will be next is after we transition to it, we’ll have to make sure it actually cleans.

Are the prices of this stuff (in the economy jugs) competitive with the prices of the boutique kitchen and bath soaps when they’re on $3 per bottle super-sales? I know that many of the boutique soaps use high-quality detergents and surfactants. Some of them are ridiculously good in terms of cleaning power, and you can use tiny quantities (like 1-2 mL, sometimes just drops) to get thorough cleaning.
Softsoap, the Target clone, the Amazon clone, and Dial are about $6 for 50-64 ounces. I’m not sure about the boutique soaps — they tend to be more perfumed (albeit with healthier scents such as lavender or sage). If worst came to worst, I vaguely recall seeing a recipe for unscented hand soap that I could make in a 5 gallon bucket.
That’s a pretty hard price to beat!
There was actually one very weird option.
I happen to be a great fan of Planet dishwashing soap for washing things other than dishes. I’m going to break the Amazon link here to keep it from importing stuff — https://www.am azon.com/Planet-Ul tra-Dishwashing-Liquid-Bottles/dp/B000F52U1W . The ingredients are: “Water (carrier). Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Lauramine Oxide (plant-based cleaning agents). Sodium Chloride (mineral viscosity adjuster). Sodium Bicarbonate (mineral alkalinity adjuster).” — that’s five, if you’re counting. The plant-based stuff uses coconut as an input, but I can’t detect it in the final product.
I got into it for washing SCUBA and CPAP gear. The last thing you need at 60 feet on a reef is extraneous odors or for your gear to itch while you’re sleeping. And I discovered something quite peculiar — this is merely anecdotal and you should do your own research — but it seems to refurbish silicone face seals, like on dive masks and CPAP masks. One that is starting to whiten up, get stiff, get sticky and grody….if you wash it with this stuff it appears to improve.
Mind you, it’s not back to “new” — but it seems to roll months off its age.
I was going to recommend this to someone a couple of years back, so (being paranoid) I called the company and asked if it was the same as the stuff I used 20 years ago. They found a guy who knew, and he said there had been one change — they slightly increased the amount of salt to make it thicker — but that was it.
So for this crisis, I called them to see if they made hand soap. And they called back. They don’t make a hand soap…..but they all just put the dishwashing liquid in their hand soap dispensers (after cleaning the dispensers thoroughly). If you want to use it in a foaming soap dispenser, you’ll need to dilute it a bit with water and they’d strongly advise using distilled.
I’ve used this product on my CPAP equipment and I’ve used it on my dive gear and have utmost confidence in it. I just don’t use it on my dishes because I want something nasty that strips organics off cooking and eating surfaces efficiently for that purpose. But it’s an option for hand soap if things go stupid.
Ah, yes…..that’s another thing…..
The way Cooth washes his hands — turn on water, wet hands thoroughly, do one pump of hand soap from dispenser, rub hands into lather, rinse.
The way the Fiancee washes her hands — put four pumps of hand soap into a palm, turn on water, immediately rinse three pumps into drain, rub hands into lather, rinse.
Heretofore, this hasn’t been an issue….but if we had a soap that required only drops…….

This is why “mentoring” is so important with female scientists. We XYs can “mansplain” this stuff forever and they simply don’t get it. But some woman who understands the logic of not wasting soap will also know whatever bizarro logic “girlsplains” the same idea to another woman, and it sticks.
E.g., a guy can say “you’re pouring 3/4 of the soap down the drain – obviously you don’t need all of it – do the math”, and the woman will respond “but I need 4 pumps to cover my hands”. But her female “mentor” will say “spread the first pump around and wet it to see if it feels right, before you add more”, and the woman will say “Oh, wow – that really works!” Mentor then says “And just think of the savings!”

The funny thing is I discovered a new mathematical formalism recently (geometric algebra, which is a Clifford algebra), and it’s pretty interesting; a lot of totally different math used for various branches of physics is all expressable with it. Anyhow, with geometric algebra all four of Maxwell’s equations can be combined into one:

Pleasurable excitement ripples through the usual boredom of Washington, and the resident curiosities enjoy exquisite frissons, over the possibility of nuclear war over the Ukraine. Some official of the EU, or maybe it was the mediocrity in the White House with the truculence problem, but anyway one of the geniuses ruling the planet’s fate has said that if Russia used nukes, the Russian army would be destroyed, grrr, bowwow, woof. Exactly how it would be destroyed, the sayer didn’t say. Anyway, the threats and counterthreats swirl around the idea that a nuke war between Russia and the West might occur. Maybe, with tactical nukes in the Ukraine, about which nobody gives a rat’s nether region. The world is full of damned fools.
But:
The general staffs of both Russia and China are, whatever else you may think of them, sane. They know of America’s massive nuclear forces. They are not going to launch an atomic war. Sane behavior cannot be relied on with Washington’s second-rate lawyers, but the generals in the Pentagon are not crazy. They like hobbyist wars and big budgets, but if Biden ordered a nuclear strike, they would be likely to suddenly remember that Congress has to declare war and, seeing that their radar screens were empty of incoming missiles, and say, “Mr. President, we are not authorized to do that.” And recommend a committee.
What would such a war be like? Let’s guess.
America is fragile. We don’t notice because it works smoothly and because when a local catastrophe occurs—earthquake, hurricane, tornado—the rest of the country steps in to remedy things. The country can handle normal and regional catastrophes. But nuclear war is neither normal nor regional. Very few warheads would serve to wreck the United States beyond recovery for decades. This should be clear to anyone who actually thinks about it.
Defense is impossible. Missile defenses are meaningless except as money funnels to the arms industry. This is not the place to go into decoys, hypersonics, Poseidon, maneuvering glide vehicles, bastion stationing, MIRV, just plain boring old cruise missiles, and so on. Coastal cities are particularly easy targets, being vulnerable to submarine-launched sea-skimming missiles. Washington, New York, Boston, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle for starters, all gone.
A modern country is a system of systems of systems, interdependent and interconnected—water, electricity, manufacturing, energy, telecommunications, transportation, pipelines, and complex supply chains. These are interconnected, interdependent, and rely on large numbers of trained people showing up for work. Modern warheads are not the popgun squibs of Hiroshima. Talking of repair any time soon after the nuclear bombing of a conurbation is foolish because the city would have many hundreds of thousand of dead, housing destroyed, massive fires, horrendously burned people with no hope of medical care, and in general populations too focused on staying alive to worry about abstractions like supply chains.
The elimination of transportation might cause more death than the bombs. Cities, suburbs, and towns cannot feed themselves. They rely on a constant, heavy influx of food grown in remote regions. This food is shipped by rail or truck to distribution centers, as for example Chicago, whence it is transshipped to cities like New York. Heavy megatonnage on Chicago would disrupt rail lines and trucking firms. Trains and trucks need gasoline and diesel which come from somewhere, presumably in pipelines. These, broken by the blast, burning furiously, would take time to repair. Time is what cities would not have.
What would happen in, say, New York City even if, improbably, it were not bombed? Here we will ignore the likelihood of sheer, boiling panic and resultant chaos on learning that much of the country had been flattened. In the first few days there would be panic buying with shelves at supermarkets being emptied. Hunger would soon become serious. By day four, people would be hunting each other with knives to get their food. By the end of the second week, people would be eating each other. Literally. This happens in famines.
Most things in America rely on electricity. This comes from generating plants which burn stuff, usually natural gas or coal. These arrive on trains, which would not be running, or in trucks, not likely to be running. They depend on oil fields, refineries, and pipelines unlikely to function. All of the foregoing depend on employees continuing to go to work instead of trying to save their families. So—no electricity in New York, which goes dark.
This means no telephones, no internet, no lighting, and no elevators. How would this work out in a city of high rises? Most people would be nearly incommunicado in a lightless city. Huge traffic jams would form as people with cars tried to leave—to go where?—as long as gasoline in the tank lasted.

Where does water come from in New York? I don’t know, but it doesn’t flow spontaneously to the thirtieth floor. It needs to be pumped, which involves electricity, from wherever it comes from to wherever it has to go. No electricity, no pump. No pump, no water. And no flushing of toilets. River water could be drunk, of course. Think of the crowds.
In all likelihood, civil society would collapse by the end of the fourth day. The more virile ethnics would surge from the ghettos with guns and clubs to feed. Police would have disappeared or be either looking after their families or themselves looting. Civilization is a thin veneer. The streets and subways are not safe even without a nuclear war. The majority would be unarmed and unable to defend themselves. People who had never touched a gun would suddenly understand the appeal. If you think this would not happen, give my best to Tinker Belle.
Thus it would not be necessary to bomb a city to destroy it, only to cut it off from transport hubs for a couple of weeks. An attacker would of course destroy many cities in addition to necessary infrastructure. Those who plan nuclear wars may be psychopaths, or just insular geeks fiddling with bloodless abstractions, but they are not fools. They have carefully calculated how to most seriously damage a target country. In no more than a couple of months, perhaps two hundred million people would starve to death. Do you think this fantastic? Tell me why it is fantastic.
Parenthetically, in my days of walking the E-ring in the Pentagon, I read manuals on how to keep soldiers fighting after they had received lethal doses of radiation. They don’t die immediately and, depending on dosage, might be administered stimulants to keep them on their feet, or so the manuals said. These manuals also discussed whether these walking dead should be told that they were about to die. The authors used the evocative phrase “terrain alteration” to describe landscapes with all the trees lying on their sides, and we have all heard of “overkill.” After a nuclear war, millions would slowly die of radiation—read up on Nagasaki and Hiroshima—and burned corpses would rot in the streets, too numerous for burial by survivors with other things on their minds.
How would the next season’s crops be planted? Answer: they wouldn’t be. Where would fertilizer come from? Parts for tractors, trucks, harvesters? Making these requires functioning factories which require electricity, raw materials, and workers. If the attacker chose to hit agricultural lands with radiation-dirty cobalt bombs, these regions would be lethal for years. Nuclear planners think about these things.
Among “defense intellectuals,” there is, or was when I covered such things, insane talk of how America could “absorb” a Russian first strike and have enough missiles in reserve to destroy Russia. These people should be locked in sealed boxes and kept in abandoned coal mines.
Note also that Biden, Blinken, and Bolton, bibbety bobbety boo, and their families, live in DC, the priority target. While the rats are aboard the ship, they won’t sink it. If they are discovered boarding a Greyhound out of Washington at three a.m., dressed as washerwomen, it will be time to worry.

No meat, lots of carbs. How did we ever survive??? 😜 I didn’t eat spaghetti again for over 25 years! When I do, I make gourmet sauce with lots of MEAT and tomatoes, mushrooms, celery, onions, asparagus and lots of parmesan cheese.
You can totally carb out if your body remains in a calorie deficit — like lean kids running around and playing all day outdoors…..or, for that matter, athletes on Tour d’France.
When you don’t do aerobic stuff all the time, and exert peak effort in short periods, you need to do more protein and carbs become toxic.

Ground report. My local Aldi recently replaced 90% of their checkout lanes with self-checkouts. There are now only three lanes in the entire store, and only one of them was actually manned with a cashier. Meanwhile, in the massive self-checkout area, there were multiple red lights flashing either from the machines malfunctioning or the customers not knowing what to do. It was chaos. Holiday shopping is going to be a nightmare.
I’ve never seen the self-checkout situation this bad. Most stores here have 3-4 self check-outs at most. I’ve never seen a grocery store until now replace almost of their lanes with them.
BTW, you don’t have to legally stop for the receipt checkers. Costco and Sam’s Club can get away with it because they’re private membership clubs, but everyone else you can tell to go take a hike. Just keep walking.

Fry’s Electronics had the multi-cashier with receipt check by the door thing. We had some people from the UK visiting the company I was at, and I took ’em over there. I explained that the prices on the shelf were real, but that there’d be an additional sales tax added at the register — and that once the transaction was completed, they should dodge the crowd at the exit and walk straight out, no matter what was said.
At the time, things you could buy in Silicon Valley for about $100 were selling for about 130 pounds on High Street in the UK….and the pound was about $2.25. So the guy is all happy and gathers a couple of goodies, we go through checkout, and we make a beeline for the door, and once I’m outside, I look around…..and mutter: “f***in’ Brit”.
It is indeed one of the major contributions to world culture that the Brits got the Indians, Kenyans, and Hong Kong Chinese to properly queue up when necessary…..but they ended-up sniffing their own glue to the point where they feel obligated to get into queues that they could just walk past.
There shouldn’t be an “inconvenience” at all when exiting the store. Full stop. The customer has no legal obligation to participate in this security theater, so why spend your time and patience waiting in the receipt checking line when it serves no purpose at all except to make some cheapskate billionaire executives at corporate richer? Screw that. I’d rather get home five minutes faster.

I always use the Sam’s app on the mobile anyway. Scan the items as I put them in the cart. Check out via the app on the credit card. Show the check out code on the phone to the checker. They scan three items and out the door we go. Never stand in line to scan items or go through a cashier’s line anymore.

In September, an Israeli health researcher and health journalist Dr. Yaffa Shir-Raz released shocking new information about her findings and exposed Israel’s cover-ups in reporting the adverse events related to Covid-19 vaccinations.

The study analyzed all calls related to cardiac arrest (CA) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) events from January 1st, 2019 to June 20th, 2021.
