It’s called a shot across the bow and it’s in response to what Trump has been hearing is going on behind his back, which more than a half of dozen donors and scores of sitting congressman have told me is true.
They’ve targeted Ron DeSantis as the stool they believe is their best chance to foil another Trump Presidency and after enough hammering away at him and blowing up his head, there are indications that it is working.
But make no mistake, it is a DC establishment plan and is true.
I’ve received at least a half dozen calls from GOP donors who have told me the contents of their conversations AND sitting members of Congress have confirmed it.
@GOPLeader Kevin McCarthy and Paul Ryan have hatched a plan to defeat MAGA in 2024 and Ron DeSantis is the stool.

What’s the root cause of the US proxy war in Ukraine? Most people don’t have a clue. Let me explain.

The US Govt knows that without the reserve currency status it is bankrupt. Without money printing on the backs of other nations it’s simply Game Over for the US. But not just for the US. The EU and most western democracies followed the US model of endless Debt and money printing.
That’s why they stand with the US and support the escalating actions that seem totally illogical to most people. Why is the EU sacrificing prosperity for a US proxy war in Ukraine? Because if the US is collapsing they collapse too. Their alliance is glued by the fear of failure.

My “study” has a door leading directly into the garage, where we keep a spare fridge. Being that I’m in California, there is no insulation in the garage. In fact, the roof structure (thermal barrier OSB, tarpaper, shingles) acts as a sounding board for anything that is going on outside.
About 45 minutes ago, I went into the kitchen to look up through the skylights and see if there was any sign of the fabled red moon. It was pitch dark, with no stars. I just went out to grab another beer and discovered why I’ll be doing no astronomical observations tonight — it’s raining steadily.
Which is good news for gil00 about 36 hours from now.
Glad you mentioned it so I just took a peek here. It looks like a crescent moon w/ the white crescent going from roughly 2-7 o’clock if the full moon was a clock face. It was about 4:50am Eastern time for that view.
Checking around 5am it’s a much thinner sliver. Hope I’ll check in another 10 minutes & see if it’s in the full eclipse. Thankfully it’s a crisp, cool night now…
About 5:15am the moon is mostly “blood” with a bit of a whitish glow from about 2-5 am on the moon as clock face…

When I was a kid, growing up in SoCal, there were a couple of times when I’d wake up and there’d still be some snow on the ground…..but it wasn’t until just a couple of years ago, in Nashville, Tennessee, that I actually saw it falling. Unlike rain in the audio observatory of my garage, it was oddly and eerily quiet.
I recently mentioned how thoroughly STEM my parents are. As a junior Professor of Mathematics at a small LA-region college, my mom got “volunteered” onto the “Textbook Review Committee”. Every year she got a couple of large boxes of STEM textbooks, and she was supposed to report her thoughts about them back to the committee. As we lived in apartments and small houses, this meant that these textbooks were EVERYWHERE, including at the breakfast table and in the bathroom. So they were much of my casual “waking up until the calories/caffeine kick in” reading material.
And I can tell you that it is a common trope in nearly all physics/chemistry textbooks to have a chapter called something like “phases of matter”, and the introductory page has a picture of snowflakes.
Unlike people in 90% of the United States, I found this terrifying. You see, these highly-magnified pictures never included a ruler or other sense of scale — and I had no opportunity to see the size of these things in real life. Instead, around the same time, I got to see Kwai-Chang Caine dodge Shaolin throwing stars in the intro to every episode of “Kung Fu”. I pictured these snowflakes as being of similar size and velocity — icy hand-sized razor-edged shuriken hurtling from the heavens.
When I eventually saw snow falling, I was surprised to see how small and light it was. Further, it didn’t fall like rain — it could curl in under overhangs and collect against doors instead of draining away. It could quixotically perch on a railing but not wet the fence beneath. And a huge disappointment was that the stupid flakes were nowhere near large enough for me to observe the characteristics in the physics textbooks.
I anticipate that the next region where I live will have substantially more snow than I am used to. I hope I can cope.
I have an uncle (by marriage) who grew up in Michigan. His wife, the Fiancee, and myself were gingerly inching around on ice around his house while he was skipping around in tennis shoes on this same trip. He was living evidence that you can get used to it.
Every year when the first snowy or icy roads hit & I’m on my first drive in That Stuff again I make a point of trying to skid my car out, lock the brakes, do some funky steering, on our street & going slow & not near other cars or trees, so I can get the feel of it again. It comes back like riding a bike.
When I lived in Tulsa they were Horrible driving on snow/ice. Their strange (to me) weather made ice more likely & they basically only put sand out at the intersections. Many of the roads didn’t have shoulders but ditches & there were plenty of cars in them.
The other drivers there were Way Scarier than the actual road conditions.
OT but somewhat related. I love Oliver Sacks. The stories are fascinating, and scary.
In The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat, he wrote of one patient who actually reached college age before she found out (from Sacks’ diagnosis) that she had no depth of vision. Throughout life, she wondered why her experiences seemed so different from anyone else, and I wish I could remember what happened which made her realize something was wrong.
Anyway, turns out that the problem had to do with an incomplete processing in her brain before she was born, some neural processing function was incomplete. There was a simple cure, involving looking at a pencil, where a person could train his eyes to acquire stereoscopic vision. It required persistence and dedication, and she did it.
She was at an evening class at college one night during her eye training period, left class, and went outside. Her first experience with total vision was snow falling, and she was overwhelmed with the beauty.
We are used to snow falling in Buffalo. But even with decades of experience, the first snow fall still seems magical and lovely. I cannot imagine what it would be like if all the previous snow fell without depth of vision.

Elon Musk has promised to investigate why several far-right personalities in Brazil were removed from Twitter after some high-profile names, including the grandson of a former military dictator, complained they were being denied free speech.
Twitter Brasil suspended profiles of three rightwing politicians recently elected to congress: Carla Zambelli, Gustavo Gayer, and Nikolas Ferreira, a 26-year-old who won 1.5m votes and has 2 million followers.
They and other supporters of the extremist president Jair Bolsonaro were removed from the platform in the past week in response to an undisclosed legal demand.
All criticised the decision, as did Paulo Figueiredo Filho, the grandson of João Figueiredo, Brazil’s military president between 1979 and 1985, and now a commentator for the rightwing media operation Jovem Pan.
“Hey @elonmusk, your company has been imposing a draconian ideological censorship of the Brazilian people’s right to free speech,” Figueiredo tweeted. “We are at a critical moment in our history! Wtf is going on?? We thought you bought Twitter exactly for this reason! Rise and lift the censorship NOW!”
“I will look into this,” Musk replied.
Figueiredo, whose account with 946,000 followers is still active, did not respond to a tweet asking for comment but he did reveal that his Telegram account had been suspended.
His grandfather was the last military president before Brazil returned to democracy after a 21-year dictatorship that saw hundreds of people killed and thousands more tortured and jailed.
The controversy comes as Bolsonaro’s followers continue to protest against his defeat by the leftist leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Lula beat Bolsonaro in a second-round run-off by 50.9% to 49.1% on 30 October and the days since have been marked by demonstrations, many of which are by supporters calling for a return of military rule.
Hundreds of roads and highways were blocked by the protesters last week and although most have now been cleared anger continues unabated online.

And I’m thinking….how thoroughly do you toss a place if you’re finding a single-board computer the size of a credit card inside a popcorn tin in a bathroom closet? The Feds must have practically disassembled the entire home. I mean, I’ve got a bunch of these little guys stashed all over the place — they’re not particularly noticeable.
They didn’t put much thought to it considering the large amount of money involved. Something like that would look more inconspicuous if it were mounted in a professional looking way inside the control panel of some innocent electronics, intruder alarm, heating boiler, air conditioning etc.
I’m not sure that’s exactly fair. We are not given sufficient evidence in the story to really evaluate the actual arrangements.

1) Two votes for Zeldin/Pinion/Sams in the can.
2) I recognized most of the people running for judgeships. Not necessarily bad people, but all wired in, connected, nepo. We skipped them all. Two fewer votes cast, just as an entirely futile personal message that we know the votes do not matter, no decision by any judge is truly independent.
3) BTW, I have long advocated that judges be chosen by lot. A system could be worked out, and, believe me, the quality of the judges would be the same, or better. I have NEVER gotten a negative response to my suggestion, and people always see how vastly superior that method would be.
4) My blood is boiling. NY always had the voter put his signature in the book, next to a facsimile of his registration signature. Now the signature is put into a remote device with a signature line. You know what I mean, like at the check-out counter, where it is impossible to replicate your exact signature, and often you just “make your mark” because of how pointless it all is. There was zero advantage to this process over signing into the book. Practically, it was way worse. EXCEPT for the cheating and the time wasting when the question of matching signatures comes up. Heads they win, tails you lose. Your legitimate signature is the same as their fraudulent one, and who can tell the difference?
5) My wife and I were shocked by the officials. In (many) years past, the same set of familiar faces met us. This year. with the exception of the nasty daft lady in charge of bossing voters around (she had been pleasant in previous years — God bless her, incipient dementia I think), an entire new crew of officials. One guy who was consciously trying to be the big boss in the room. He told one voter he was “not from around here,” which seemed obvious because of his inflated sense of himself, not a Buffalo characteristic.
6) There were far fewer people than two years ago. That is the difference Trump makes.
7) Paper all the way. Require ID. One day to vote. It is all so obviously fair and efficient. Anything else and there is a presumption of fraudulent intent.
Purple-freakin’-thumbs. Try that with the graveyard vote.

Yes it was strange gas company calling. We do have a gas stove that is the only thing since Feb that uses gas.

We get mail ballots only but its paper at least. I dropped them off yesterday afternoon.
6 people at the fire station but no voters. They were all very nice, certainly not republican, maybe one but just no business.
It was quick and as we left another person was dropping off a ballot.
They let you vote from your car too which i dont like.
I hope the rain all day doesn’t keep voters away, but it may keep ballot harvesters from driving around.

Welp, our water heater picked today of all days to stop working, so the election workers are going to get me in all of my un-showered glory!
Thankfully we have a spare in the garage to be installed for just such an occasion. We use an on-demand. Last time we got one, it arrived dented. We complained, the company sent us a new one, and told us not to bother sending the old one back. So we installed the dented one, and kept the good one as a spare!
You need to work out if it failed because of an issue with the controls/burner. Or if the heat exchanger got fouled up due to hard water. If the later, using a softener will extend the life of the new unit.

Hochul’s new gun law that tried to do an end run around SCOTUS by making the whole of Manhattan a “sensitive zone” is partially blocked (per Faux News).

Just returned from voting. It was fairly busy. I chose a paper ballot this time.
The election worker went to tear off my ballot from the pad, and ripped the top portion. As she handed it to me, I asked if I could get another one, the scanning machine will probably reject it. And considering all the fraud and cheating going on, it would be best to have a clean ballot.
She said she understood completely, and seemed sincere, but said she wasn’t sure what to do, because of something about the ballots being numbered, and if I don’t use the one she gave me it will cause some problem with their numbering system (I’m guessing it would be an unaccounted for ballot in a sequentially numbered stack of ballots).
So she took the ballot and went to some supervisor and explained what happened, and came back and said it was no problem, they tear the top part off along the perforated line anyway, which she then did, so the ballot itself didn’t have any tear in it.
There was a long line for the electronic voting machines, but I was done with the paper ballot in about 3 or 4 minutes.
Spent a couple hours this afternoon researching the lesser known candidates, and the ones who try to sneak by with “no party” affiliation.
It always amazes me that the Republican Party doesn’t make it easier for their base, until I remember the Republican Party hates their base, and if the GOP globalist puppet didn’t win the primary, they generally want the democrat to win anyway, so then it all makes sense again.

Went in the early phase of after work rush. Our precinct was busy, but not excessively so. All “booths” were filled & I was second in line. Before I got to a booth maybe a half dozen voters came in behind me. I had roughly the 700th ballot & was roughly the 300th voter (which seems higher than usual) for our precinct?
There were several people passing out materials outside (more subdued than times past), mostly running for local school board. The major table w/ more monied candidates was actually camped out on an adjacent block so didn’t get much traffic. After voting I lingered near the candidates & passed out some Pro-Life flyers w/ info on Prop 3. It took quite a while to get people to take them & none of the young mothers with kids in tow accepted one. 2 elderly men I approached said they already knew how they would vote on 3 & they were voting for it–unrestricted abortion & more…sigh…
So when I was done voting the elderly lady at the voting machine helped me ensure that my paper ballot was successfully counted. She was pleasant & unmasked as were nearly all of the scores of people I eye-witnessed today. Once my ballot was accepted I asked her about what kind of voting machine it was & she said it was Dominion, which could clearly be seen on the side facing the door though I’d never noticed that before.
Well that got me making multiple remarks about election integrity, voter fraud, 2020 & Trump’s massive landslide victory, & how could we trust that our votes were going to be accurately counted This Time? She said that our Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson was responsible for us having Dominion machines & that we should “take it up with her” (she was being most polite & even perhaps sympathetic & sharing at least some of the viewpoints I was claiming loud enough to be heard in that maybe 20×20 room). The gentleman behind me began making similar statements to mine about the voter fraud & the unreliability of Dominion. I didn’t look at the faces in the room to see if they were in agreement or disgusted by what they’d heard.
I conversed for a bit w/ one of the school board candidates after voting. He has a chemistry background & I raised some of the issues I was aware of from special ed advocacy. He gave decent info on school board meetings & how the public can participate, get info on meetings, & get written responses to questions.
While we were conversing a couple different men came up to him to challenge him on the “tranny” issue (I’d also talked briefly about it with him previously). He was reassuring that that particular issue wasn’t really happening in our community. The one man challenged him directly with “what do You feel about it?” & he admitted he was not in support of it.
Another man who had talked w/ the candidate about school issues & the “tranny” thing ended up discussing several other things with me. He was concerned, yet hopeful, that This Time the electoral fraud would be reined in–I’m not that optimistic yet. By the end of the conversation he said he thought we were “twins” in our thinking. He worked for some company that deals with Medicare & even had a large campaign size button on his tie “Ask Me About Medicare”. He came across as a regular guy, not a hard-core conservative. Salt of the earth, decent American.
This man was hopeful that Republicans would take the House & the Senate This Time. I pointed out how R’s should Already be controlling the Senate w/ John James stolen victory & likely that Senator in Georgia & possibly the House given the Trump coattails. Also we discussed Trump’s massive 2020 landslide & the fact that Biden had neither won nor was he in charge.- We touched base on doings in Arizona, Maricopa County, & Kari Lake who I said could very well be our future President!
I witnessed a young woman drive up with an “absentee ballot” in a sealed envelope & inquired if she could turn it in at the polling place (if she was there well within the margin of voting why not vote in person?). The school board candidate told her that she could turn it in at City Hall & that someone should be there to receive the ballot at least until 8pm, which is when polls officially close, I think.
My community, based on the sample of voters I saw today, was primarily white with some black, some hispanic, & some arabic/muslim people congenially mixed in. I saw no upheavals & probably generated the most controversy myself in the Dominion discussion…
I HOPE my vote counts this time in Michigan but not holding my breath.

You know, it’s funny. In the mid 1980s Colorado had five congressional districts. #1 was Denver. #2 was Boulder. #3 was the western part of the state plus Pueblo. #4 was the Eastern part of the state plus Fort Collins. And #5 was Colorado Springs.
That’s still true though I think Fort Collins may be in #2 now. The three new districts are mostly denver suburban, though the 7th includes South Park as well. (Yes, there really is a South Park.)

The marijuana thing installs a new government official for social score sorts of purposes. Fortunately, the state house is Republican dominated. It may not actually happen.
Ohio’s honest Secretary of State, Frank LaRose, won re-election, as did all the other Republican top officials down-ballot from DeWine.
LaRose was important. Oddly “Tore ‘says’ Maras” was running against him, but she only took 1% of the vote.

Keeping the three big cheat states is essential to their 2024 plans.
Ohio Judicial branch had good news statewide, but bad news in Franklin county (Columbus deep blue murder zone).
Statewide, the THREE spots on the Ohio Supreme court ALL went to Republicans, because the OSC made stupid rulings thanks to DEMs.
AND the stupid rulings were overruled by two statewide issues on the ballot, which both passed overwhelmingly against the SOROS positions.
First, there was an issue allowing judges to set high bail against repeat offenders.
Yeah – Democrat SOROS judges on OSC actually ruled against bail that protects the community.
Second, there was an issue to prevent “sanctuary city voting by non-citizens”.
Again, the SOROS position was voted down – Ohio can prohibit non-citizen voting.
But at the level of Franklin county, meaning greater Columbus, ALL the Republican judges lost, just like all of them lost in 2020, and most of them in 2021.
Columbus is going to turn into a Soros hell-hole, most likely. Surrounding counties are going to have to come up with defenses of some kind.
I wonder how much cheating went on there.
LaRose is able to stop a lot of the cheating, but not all of it. He has worked tirelessly against Soros in terms of the legal stuff, but I don’t think he’s able to deal with the China / cyber / fake citizens / paid ballots / vote harvesting stuff.
Once a place is so corrupt that cheating is normal, it’s impossible to stop.
The Dems basically believe in “every ballot of a Dem voter (that they claim) must be turned in as a Dem vote – that this is “fair” – that this is “every vote counts”.
Dems who sit on their hands and don’t vote are not allowed. Their ballots are found and turned in for the Dems.

The polls are closed, or at least most are closed, and the Republicans will take control of the House of Representatives. Remains to be seen if they get a majority in the Senate. Even without the Senate, the GOP House will force a change in the Biden Administration’s Ukraine policy. The days of sending billions to Ukraine is over, especially as the United States continues to fall into economic recession. The Biden Administration happy talk about a strong economy is going to be exposed as delusional rhetoric.
Republicans in the House will not be eager to send more billions to Ukraine. If Russia continues to shut off the power grid in Ukraine and pushes Ukrainian troops out of the Donetsk Republic and Kherson, enthusiasm for backing Ukraine will continue to erode. The increased spending for U.S. defense corporations, ostensibly to be sent to Ukraine and re-stock U.S. military supplies, already is baked in to the budget. Even if Ukraine is defeated in the near term, the shareholders and executives Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman will be happy. They will still be making money off of Ukraine.
One of the most important consequences of the Republicans taking the House of Representatives will be Congressman Jim Jordan taking control of the Judiciary Committee. Unlike his fat, elderly predecessor–the incompetent Jarrold Nadler–Jordan is smart, aggressive, well read and committed to taking action to clean up the corrupt Department of Justice and criminally partisan FBI. The lies of the Democrats about the so-called January 6 insurrection will be exposed. I believe there will be a serious effort to dismantle the FBI and assign its law enforcement duties to other agencies, such as DEA and the U.S. Marshalls. I also will not be surprised if the House moves to impeach Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Directors Chris Wray.
The House also will play a big role in exposing the lies surrounding the Covid vaccines and the fact that Big Pharma hid crucial information from the public. Each day brings new reports of the deaths of relatively young men and women dying from myocarditis. The American public will learn about how doctors at NIH, like Dr. Faucci, profited from their relationships with those who produced the vaccines. America likes to lecture foreign countries about their corruption. This is like a drunken mother-in-law hectoring her son-in-law on the need for sobriety.
Republican control of the Congress is no guarantee that the wretched policies, especially foreign policy, will be altered significantly. International events, such as a global economic crisis, will expose the impotence of the Congress to do anything significant to adopt polices that will stem the carnage from supply disruptions and soaring energy costs.
One of the wild cards is BRICS. Will Russia, China, India, Brazil and South Africa succeed in creating an alternative to the petrol dollar? Previous efforts have faltered, but the sanctions imposed on Russia in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine and increased U.S. bellicosity may change the dynamics and a new gold-based currency could take center stage on the world economy. That is bad news for the United States.
One final note about the influence of Donald Trump. There was only one Republican Senate candidate who made a point of insulting Donald Trump–a clown in Colorado named O’Dea. How did that turn out for him? He got his ass handed to him. Dumb. Trump remains an important force in U.S. politics and should not be dismissed as a “has been.”
