Because I understood the implications immediately, when the inauguration went through without military intervention, which I was absolutely expecting — because they had to — but they didn’t. They were a no-show.
It’s like seeing a long line of dominoes falling on a gymnasium floor.
If you can see where the ‘last’ domino is (i.e., the ‘destination’), and you see where the dominoes are currently falling, then it doesn’t matter whether the lines (of standing dominoes) are straight or curved or go up ramps (or down ramps), you still see and know where it ends up, because you can see where the last domino is currently standing.

It doesn’t matter how many steps (dominoes) you add to tighten the gaps, you still end up at the same place.
And looking away from it doesn’t change it.
The only ‘skill’, if there is one, is training oneself to ‘see’ the dominoes and to accept the end result, what you ‘see’, wherever the dominoes ‘stop’.
Of course there is no actual ‘stop’ because time doesn’t stop, so you pick a point to represent a ‘stop’, to give context from when the dominoes started to the reference point (the chosen ‘stop’).
You can then go further, ‘seeing’ the dominoes continue to fall into the future, it’s just that the farther into the future you look, the more unknown variables there are, the more speculative it becomes, so the less certain you can be about what you ‘see’.
That gets into prognostication, which isn’t really useful, at least in this context.
But what is useful is using the technique above to see “what is”, right now. To bring clarity to events we might otherwise have cause to be in ‘denial’ about, without even realizing it.

It was immediately visible.

Those that know this area know that much of America visits here. The National Park gets 13+ million visits alone now. The latest numbers have over twice that many visiting all over the county annually. There are a several military/law enforcement oriented retail stores unrelated to guns/ammo whose sales are out the roof and they are adding locations. Same with the famous Knife store, adding another location.
When I see it here, I know it is happening all over because they come here from all over the country.

The next morning, the fumes were really bad AND EVERY PIECE OF METAL WAS CORRODED and the lab equipment was so much expesive JUNK

At -40, °C = °F, and any temperature setting above -40, made with the mistaken assumption that the °F oven was in °C, would result in a lower actual temperature. For example, 100° set thinking that the °F oven was in °C, would result in an actual temperature of a little less than 38°C.
If the engineer thought that since the oven was in a U.S. lab, the thermometer and temperature settings would be in °F, and then made settings also thinking those settings would be in °F, but the oven thermometer and settings were actually in °C, then the resultant temperature would be higher than desired, frying the PVC test strip.

I know someone who is a few hundred miles from the fire, and noticed what smelled like car exhaust in his home on Feb. 4th.
Went outside, and the same smell was outside, so whatever it was, it wasn’t coming from inside the home.
The smell is not overpowering, but constant, like someone was idling their car or truck right next to your home for hours.

Don’t natural gas companies add something to the gas to give it a smell, for that very reason?

Yes. Methane (CH4) is odorless, too, so they add methanethiol (CH3SH) to it, to give it a distinctive odor.
But they don’t ship you CO, they ship methane. When it burns, the odorant burns too. And if the combustion isn’t complete, you get carbon monoxide instead of CO2. Meanwhile the odorant has broken down under the same heat that (didn’t quite) burn the methane.
In other words, you can smell a fuel leak, but CO is basically in the exhaust, if the system isn’t working properly.
Propane and natural gas are odorized since the 1930’s. After the New London, TX school explosion that killed over 300 students and teachers.

Vinyl chloride, like many small chlorinated organics (methylene cloride, dichloroethane, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride) has a sweet smell, which is similar to ethylene glycol (antifreeze), which tends to get into exhaust and give it an odor.
Car exhaust that is mostly CO, CO2 and H2O will not have an odor, but things that get into it like hydrocarbons (gasoline smell) and ethylene glycol (sweet odor that makes antifreeze dangerous to pets) will give it a scent.
I would bet money it was vinyl chloride.

All this discovering and subsequent downing of balloons in various places, surprisingly sudden, like all of a sudden there are all these things up there? Either some entities have decided to let them loose for whatever nefarious reasons.. but this spate of balloon sigthings resembles the vagaries of fashion, or even just a horde of NPCs all running in the same direction after the most recent new thing.

My entire scientific focus here has no agenda for or against Trump’s position on COVID, vaccines, or anything else. If I bring Trump into any of that, it is my honest political and scientific opinion, expressed courteously, and not meant to hurt anybody’s feelings.
Many people don’t remember why I chose to start moderating MAGA Mom (she is not banned). It is NOT because she was starting squabbles, although I was watching for that. It is because she literally slandered me and this site, saying that I had advocated violence, specifically prior to January 6, and in that context. I chose at that point to make sure I was always alerted to ANYTHING she said.
I too, hope that people can work out their disagreements. But when there are conflicts that become problematic, my policy is firm. Whoever “picks the scab” of the cooled dispute in the immediate context is guilty of initiation, and after some number of such incidents, will be subject to moderation.
I’m very good at looking for hidden initiations and contexts, and others are even better. Witnesses are always encouraged to alert me to facts.
The safest policy is to simply stop responding to the other person directly, and to disagree with the POSITION in a courteous and respectful way in a standalone comment. If one feels skilled enough to disagree DIRECTLY, it needs to be courteous and impersonal, respecting the other position (AND MORE IMPORTANTLY THE PERSON), inviting a further courteous response. In doing so, one is blameless.
Sometimes people are prickly, and their prickly comments invite a cold or prickly response, etc. I know that I’m as guilty of this as anybody else. Reflection upon that fact should always be a sign that more courtesy is needed, to steer back from trouble.
I will continue to look for both “muting” and “blocking” capabilities for WordPress comments. I actually have a coding strategy for this, and have considered doing a plugin, but I have much bigger fish to fry, and don’t need the distraction.
People need to learn the skills required for free speech. That means ALL OF US.

Last week we also learned that he pressured the College Board to strip materials essential to understanding Black history from their AP college preparatory materials.
As Congressman Ritchie Torres put it: Florida has now gone from “Don’t Say Gay” to “Don’t Say Black.”
There is no mistaking the intent behind this move when you examine the materials they pulled.
From the recent New York Times report “The College Board Strips Down Its A.P. Curriculum for African American Studies,” it’s clear the Florida GOP is trying to suppress prominent Black writers, scholars, and civil rights activists.
But one kind of material IS welcome: “Black conservatism.”
Michael, this isn’t going to stop in Florida. Already other states have signed similar book bans or are pursuing the same censorship agenda.
And it’s not lost on us that all of this is happening now, during Black History Month.
Every year at this time, without fail, far-right conservatives balk at the existence of Black History Month. They will often complain, “There’s no WHITE history month!” – ignoring, of course, that virtually all of the history taught in our schools and universities is written from that perspective already.
Indeed, until “white history” is no longer the default and “Black history” is no longer an elective, we will never have justice, progress, or inclusivity.
It is vital that people of good conscience stand up and speak out against this kind of blatant discrimination and attempt to suppress our history. That’s a big part of our work here at Vote Common Good.
We go to the spaces where radical ideas like this are expressed. Sometimes we openly oppose Christian Nationalist speakers with counter-protests. Sometimes we engage people in conversation and build relationships that help pull them back from the brink of MAGA extremism.
Sometimes we just show up to make a stand and say “This is wrong,” because Christians NEED to visibly oppose rhetoric fueled by hate, bigotry, and fear.
And sometimes…we just listen. We listen to the people struggling to get out of this radical movement. We listen to the brave community leaders who face that bigotry every day. We create space for difficult conversations.
Sometimes we’re there to teach. But sometimes we’re there to learn – and to help others learn.
This Black History Month, with the open attacks on history and truth, we believe it’s important for all of us to listen, and learn from one another.

As I have posted repeatedly, they are corrupted beyond reclamation. This goes back decades – not just recent times. Their functions need to be turned over to the US Marshals. Sincere, quality FIB personnel can apply with them and due diligence performed on their background and past work before transfer.
This is exactly what Chris Farrell with Judicial Watch suggested years ago and I have completely agreed with him since he first stated it due to my own experiences and observations going back over 40 years. I know a retired Marshal who also agrees as well as many law enforcement officers in local PDs and sheriffs’ offices that are sick of dealing with them.

I thought yesterday’s show was plain and boring.
Every year, I don’t make New Year’s resolutions, I spend January thinking about where I am missing something, or doing something, or not doing something, that needs to change.
It took me a long time this year. I have felt for a while now that there was a “thing” I needed to do, but I just couldn’t nail it down.
I tried out a church here over the last month or so. But, as has happened to me a few times in my life, that has not worked out. Too much baggage in my past that some just can’t accept. As time travel isn’t a thing, and I wouldn’t change it anyway, that’s out. And yes, I know not every church is that way, but having been a searcher all my life, I have run through a lot of options!
Then I got a couple of really beautiful messages from God, letting me know I was ok. One day I decided to do what I used to do, ask God for a message and just open the Bible to a page and read the first thing I saw. This is what I got that day:
John 14:1-6
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

When we settle down, focus, and connect to Him we position ourselves to be able to receive and hear Him.
God is not a man that he would lie. If He says it, you can believe it, He is Faithful, HE WILL DO IT.

Anecdotally I have what is normally a busy RR tract going into San Antonio right out side my window. Traffic on that has decreased by about 80% in the last month. Instead of 10 to 12 trains it’s trickled to about 2 to 3 now. I’m happy for that but, that could be economic contraction or it could be giving RR crews a break which seems more likely given East Palestine.

BREAKING UPDATE! Reports out of Ohio state that chemicals from the train derailment and explosion in East Palestine have “contaminated” the Ohio River as far as West Virginia, a source of water for more than 5 million people, per West Virginia governor Jim Justice.
This is a developing story.
Vinyl chloride gets everywhere, and IMO they didn’t handle this right. Releasing it was a bad option. Explosion was a lesser risk, overall.
The truth is that it’s not all that acutely toxic, but it IS a long-term, chronic problem, and apparently it didn’t disperse all that well, meaning right back into ground water.
A far better strategy would have been to protect the tanker from heat or flames, in whatever way was needed, than to release the contents. Dragging it some distance away from the derailment site might have worked.
They BURNED it …
Yes. A controlled burn, but that’s not going to destroy it. Most of it’s not actually going to be destroyed. Those clouds of smoke show exactly how TERRIBLE and INCOMPLETE the burn is.
All kinds of nasty shit being produced – much of it far worse than vinyl chloride. And yet, lots of vinyl chloride, too, completely unburned. They took a bad situation and made it worse.
Like I say, they could have dragged the tanker away, or pumped the contents into a different tanker, even if just to relieve pressure.
I’m seeing reports of phosgene gas in the smoke.

It’s clearly an expected product of the controlled burn. The question is the levels.
I would guess the levels would be lower in an explosion, ironically.
Who suggested burning it? Why didn’t they just pump it out? Drag away the tanker? Etc.?
Might there be a catalyst that could have polymerized it?
Apparently the only current use for vinyl chloride/chloroethane is to make PVC (polyvinyl chloride) which is safe (and an absolutely shitty thing to make pipes out of for sprinkler systems; the sun will degrade the above ground parts of it).
Vinyl chloride isn’t all that bad, compared to the burn products, IMO, although at this time of year, particularly if there are low oxygen levels, it will likely anesthetize fish in creeks and lakes. It’s more reactive than a lot of things, but still pretty persistent.
Be sure to distinguish ethane / ethyl (saturated) from ethene / ethylene / vinyl, which all indicate a double bond. This stuff is CH2=CH-Cl which is a surprisingly unreactive organic chloride. Dichloroethylene Cl-CH=CH-Cl is somewhat similar, and is a liquid useful for cleaning, IIRC.
Polymerization would produce a lot of heat, and a tanker full of the stuff in liquid form would be a very bad reactor, IMO.
Bringing a reactor to feed it to, also a pain.
If they were to bleed it off, then, the best thing IMO would be into another container like another tanker. Just using basic physics, they could remove 7/8 of it into 3 tanker cars by simple equilibration at ambient pressure. With 5 empty tankers, they could remove almost 97% of the stuff as liquid + gas.
The stuff is a decent refrigerant and anesthetic. Should be straightforward.
If only the possibility of a train derailment could have been foreseen.
If anybody had thought of that, then maybe a “just in case” plan would have been put in place for just such a disaster.
But everybody knows trains don’t carry highly toxic chemicals.
And even if they did, everybody knows trains never derail.
So TPTB should have plenty of cover.
There is video out there of an axle burning on that train for 20 miles, before the derailment. Security footage. I’ll try to find it.

LOL! Yes, vinyl is old terminology for ethenyl, meaning H2C=CH- in contrast to H3C-CH2- for ethyl.
Even worse is “vinylidene” meaning H2C=C with two branches off the second carbon, similar to methylene -CH2- as a bivalent linker.
“Vinyl” is still very useful in chemical speech, and has persisted in chem talk long after more modern nomenclature took over.
Wiki’s article is actually under the vinyl name not the systematic one–which redirects you. Seems odd to do it that way.
I suspect that Wikipedia’s policy is to look at frequency of usage for common monomer names. They likely discussed this with polymer chemists, who are often surprisingly common-sense people, and who probably warned them not to go too official on common monomer names, less people in the field go WTH.

Trump does things that elevate DeSantis. Why? He’s still sharp as a tack, and very skillful.
