Important to read the linked substack article on Chansley’s guilty plea. Shipwreckedcrew knows exactly what he is talking about. Watkin’s representation was horrid.
I watched last night (not knowing about the wretched plea agreement) and found Watkins to be disturbingly lame.
I was particularly struck by Watkin’s referral to Chansley’s mental health history. What was the point? It was totally irrelevant to the discussion at hand, and only suggested Chansley was a kook. The fact that Watkins mentioned the mental health history a couple times told me that, for personal reasons, Watkins wanted people to think Chansley was a kook.
Watkins also said a couple times how Chansley was an intelligent, nice young man, also irrelevant to the discussion at hand. This only re-enforced my impression that Watkins wanted us to think Chansley was a kook. Watkins was playing mind games around his characterization of Chansley as a person.
But more to the point, Watkins was implicitly presenting the legal argument why the PLEA was invalid because of Brady. You needed to read between the lines to see this, but that is what he was going.
This is exactly the legal situation Flynn was in, and why Powell’s legal arguments were so deficient. Watkins put himself in the same legal disadvantage.
Exculpatory evidence takes on an entirely different significance when there has been a guilty plea. That is because the person PLEADED GUILTY. He is convicted. Voluntary inculpation negates exculpation.
That is why Watkins was so nervous. With the self-evident lousy guilty plea, he had seriously undermined his client’s position with regard to the Carlson video.
Surely Chansley described what was in the video to Watkins. Surely Watkins knew the government was withholding exculpatory video. But Chansley pleaded guilty nonetheless.
We might very well wind up with another Flynn fiasco, although no two cases are ever exactly the same. Shipwreckedcrew knows what he is talking about, unlike Powell, who did not.
And off topic, but I am still wondering why many of these cases could not be dismissed based on violation of Federal Constitutional speedy trial grounds. Court congestion is no excuse. My guess, and it is just a guess, is that the lawyers did not understand the issue.
Sounds like Tucker owes us the Shipwreck interview then.

A guilty plea after being held in solitary for close to two years or more, certainly puts a heck of a lot of doubt on that plea. Flynn WAS NOT TREATED THAT WAY.
Ineffective Assistance of Counsel in Plea Bargaining — JUSTIA
Allow me to address a couple of your points. The usual reason for pleading guilty is a plea agreement locking in the sentence. There’s no known reason that isn’t true here. Watkins’ nervousness likely came from his negotiating posture with the US atty – that his client should get a lighter sentence due to his mental deficiencies. And speedy trial is out the window when your atty asks for continuance or acquiesces to it. I think there is some bullshit about national security risks being held without bail in the unPatriot Act.
One of the most common tactical errors made by attorneys is acquiescing to adjournments. Sometimes (often) you acquiesce, so you do not look like a jerk.
But you do NOT acquiesce if you do not have to, nor do you acquiesce if you have, or think you might have, a Constitutional speedy trial violation.
Because speedy trial (as opposed to trial readiness) is not an area known or understood by many lawyers, they treat adjournments as routine irrelevancies, thus letting the government and the court off the hook.
Watkins was nervous because the whole point of the Tucker segment was the exculpatory nature of the video, and Watkins knew as he sat there that the premise was most likely invalid because of the shoddy legal work Watkins himself did.
There is a good chance that the exculpatory video (if that is what it is, and it seems to be) could only be raised by arguing ineffective assistance of counsel. And that possibly puts Chansley in the same position as Flynn: lying about what Chansley knew or did not know, what was said to him about the plea, etc. The government usually buttons down those issues pretty thoroughly. This is what is not commonly understood in the emotional reaction to the unfairness and injustice; sometimes the unfairness and injustice are simply finessed.
Railroaded by his lawyer who no doubt wanted to get rid of the case as fast as possible.
Given Watkins statements to the press, he certainly held his client in contempt.

Treasury to Testify Friday for Withholding Biden Family ‘Suspicious’ Wire Transfers
The Treasury Department will testify before the House Oversight Committee on Friday about its withholding of 150 suspicious activity reports (SARs) generated by the Biden family and their associates by unusual foreign or high-dollar transactions.
The Treasury’s Jonathan C. Davidson, assistant secretary for legislative affairs, will testify before the committee about why the agency has refused to provide the SARs, which often contain evidence of potential criminal activities, such as money laundering and fraud.
House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) is investigating James and Hunter Biden, along with Eric Schwerin, for nine violations, including, wire fraud and money laundering. During its investigations, the Treasury has tried to stonewall Comer’s request for the SARs because the reports are a key trove of information that will provide details about the family’s foreign business transactions, along with knowledge of whether President Joe Biden remains compromised by foreign governments through his family’s business.
Comer stated Saturday in a press release that he intends to also examine legislative solutions to ensure Congress has timely access to the SARs.

I was about to post a question on a financial blog pointing out views on the Ukraine / Russia conflict that contradict the MSM narrative, referencing Col. Douglas Macgregor and Scott Ritter, whose analyses (both of whom I have seen in multiple video interviews) appears similar.
I checked Wiki to find out Ritter’s military status and what years he was a U.N. weapons inspector, and found this about him on Wiki:

Arrests and conviction for sex offenses
Ritter was the subject of two law enforcement sting operations in 2001. He was charged in June 2001 with trying to set up a meeting with an undercover police officer posing as a 16-year-old girl. He was charged with a misdemeanor crime of “attempted endangerment of the welfare of a child”.
The charge was dismissed and the record was sealed after he completed six months of pre-trial probation. After this information was made public in early 2003, Ritter said that the timing of the leak was politically motivated in order to silence his opposition to the Bush administration’s push toward war with Iraq.
Ritter was arrested again in November 2009 over communications with a police decoy he met on an Internet chat site. Police said that he exposed himself, via a web camera, after the officer repeatedly identified himself as a 15-year-old girl. Ritter said in his own testimony during the trial that he believed the other party was an adult acting out her fantasy. The chat room had an “age 18 and above” policy, which Ritter stated to the undercover officer.
The next month, Ritter waived his right to a preliminary hearing and was released on $25,000 unsecured bail. Charges included “unlawful contact with a minor, criminal use of a communications facility, corruption of minors, indecent exposure, possessing instruments of crime, criminal attempt and criminal solicitation”. Ritter rejected a plea bargain and was found guilty of all but the criminal attempt count in a courtroom in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, on April 14, 2011.
In October 2011, he received a sentence of one and a half to five and a half years in prison. He was sent to Laurel Highlands state prison in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, in March 2012 and paroled in September 2014.

I knew nothing about this, but it appears to be true. I have seen at least one interview of Scott Ritter by Judge Napolitano, who also interviews Col. Macgregor regularly.
So just a heads up. If you cite Ritter in an argument, be prepared for your opponent to point out that Ritter is (apparently) a pedo.

Old news. It’s true. Remembers when I came back from first Iraq war. Ritter would be testifying in front of congress as an arms control inspector about Iraq violating arms control accords we had at the time. Guy was vicious and I swore he was pushing congress into another war so I nicked named the next flare up as Ritters War (it was an intense but short air war that lasted a few weeks). End result we went in and bombed the heck out Iraq again. Fast forward again a few years latter before next Iraq invasion. Ritter has done a 180 degree turn saying we should be leaving Iraq alone. Next news was he gets busted the first time for child sex thing, trying to contact teen for sex. Okay, sort of explains that, I think. Part of Ritter’s job as arms inspector had him living for long periods of time in Iraq. No doubt Iraq set him up with some honey pots and he got a taste of something he liked or so I think. Any way Bush got his war any way. Much latter heard about the second charges. Same sort of thing but didn’t pay it any mind. All that was over twenty years ago. He does address this stuff when it comes up. How much is set up and how much is real, have no idea.
Also pretty sure this is not the first time we discussed this here. Just don’t remember exactly what we may of said on the matter. It was a long while back.

Tucker states he was one of the DC gang, going to parties and rubbing elbows with the swamp critters. I remember him being one of them when he first started guest appearances on FOX. I am not against equal distribution of wealth if it came about naturally, it’s just not something that happens in the real world, for a variety of reasons, including hard work (or lack thereof) and chance (good luck, being in the right place at the right time, etc.).
I am in favor of equal opportunity as much as that can be in an unjust world, but guaranteed results are not possible.

I think knowing that I can’t do it helps, almost like giving myself permission not to do something.
Since I can’t do it — or at least I believe I can’t do it — the pressure is off, I don’t have to struggle with it, so that makes it easier to refuse compliance.
It also helps to know you’re going to be pressured and called out, because when it always happens (and it always does), then you expect it, so you’re never surprised. You’re waiting for it.
If I wanted to be more diplomatic about it (I usually don’t want to be, because people who put me in that position deserve a sharp elbow), I just turn it around on them, putting them in my position, in front of everyone else.
So if I was talking to that shrew who was trying to grill Taibbi, I would answer with a question, putting her in my position, and then requiring the same answer of her that she was asking of me.
“Ms. Whatsyourface, if you were sitting in my chair, and I was asking you that same question, how would you answer it? Think carefully, because you’re on live TV, and your answer is going to reveal a lot about you, either way.”
It doesn’t matter how she answers after that.
If she goes full-Biotch, she loses.
If she dodges, I point that out on live TV to the whole world, at which point the audience (which is who everyone is playing for) is won over to my side, and she has implicitly given me permission to similarly dodge her questions. Tit-for-tat.
If she says she would divulge her sources and answer every question no matter how unethical and violative of the Constitution it was, then she has revealed herself as a spineless crapweasel, a snitch. The audience is won over to my side, and I can ridicule her cowardice, pointing out how I would never do what she would, because I’m not like her.
And if she says she would not divulge her sources in response to my questions, then she implicitly supports my refusal to do the same, so I make it explicit, saying that you cannot condemn me for doing exactly what you would do under the same circumstances.
This approach works for any similar situation I have encountered, for as long as I can remember.
They can’t make you go against your conscience, they can only attempt to coerce you.
But if you flip it on them, as long as it’s in a public venue and not in a back room under a naked light bulb, you put them in a box, where no matter how they respond, unless they agree with you, they lose face.
The reason it works is because no one can coerce you into violating your conscience unless what they are doing is wrong to begin with.
That means you always begin with the high moral ground, so as long as you stand your ground, you win 🙂
