Grumpy Christians
Grumpiness characterizes some of our personality types more than it does others. Some of us are born with sunny dispositions and always see the glass half full. Others seem to be grumpy from birth, seeing every glass nearly empty—and who drank it anyway? Unfortunately, even after some of us grumps become Christians, we bring our grumpiness with us. Since we’ve always been this way, we often believe grumpiness is an integral part of who we are rather than a flaw that needs to be changed. Other Christians may have been happy earlier in life but find ourselves being grumpier as we get older. Reasons for grumpiness vary, but life does take its toll. For those who recognize that perpetual grumpiness is at odds with the joy of the Lord (Acts 13:52; Galatians 5:22; Romans 14:17), there are some practical steps to change their attitude:
1. Recognize that continual grumpiness is sin. Consider negative personality traits to be like barnacles on the hull of a boat. Barnacles are the bane of boat owners because the little crustaceans cluster by the thousands, increasing drag and decreasing a boat’s fuel efficiency. Barnacles are also notoriously difficult to remove. Sins of the personality, such as grumpiness, are like that. They attach themselves to our lives, weighing us down and keeping us from experiencing all that it means to “walk by the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16, 25). The grumpy Christian needs to resist shrugging off the problem by saying things like, “That’s how I’ve always been” or “It’s too difficult to change.” Jesus paid too high a price to free us from our old ways for us to choose to remain enslaved (Romans 6:1–4).
2. Confess grumpiness as sin every time it manifests itself (1 John 1:9). Grumpiness becomes a habit that others see more readily than we do; many grumpy Christians don’t even realize when they’re being grumpy. In order to overcome a grumpy mood, we must agree with God about it. Jesus was never grumpy or cross, despite all that He faced and the cross that He bore (see Luke 10:21). Neither does grumpiness belong in the life of His followers (Romans 8:29). When we begin taking note of the way we respond to certain situations, we can become aware of how we come across to others. If we develop the habit of confessing grumpiness as sin every time we notice it, we become even more sensitive to it, and we can ask God for help in changing our old ways.
3. Thank the Lord for every good gift He has given us (James 1:17). A grateful heart is a happy heart. Grumpiness and thanksgiving cannot co-exist. Choose to “give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Perpetually grumpy people are so focused on what is not right that they overlook what is right. A grumpy Christian may be helped by starting a thankfulness journal. In the journal, record one thing each day that you can be grateful for. Then, when grumpiness sets in, change your focus by reading the journal and reminding yourself of God’s unending goodness.
4. Take a breather. When you find yourself getting grumpy, take a break. Even if it’s just for a few seconds, giving yourself time to step back and reevaluate things is helpful. If you have the time, spend your break praying, reading the Bible, or listening to worshipful music that uplifts Christ. Eat a healthy snack. Find a mirror and check your facial expression. Smile.
5. Identify the areas that contribute to grumpiness. Find the source of the grumpiness, and we can more directly deal with it. Often, grumpy people are attracted to information and people who encourage their grumpiness. They feast on negative news, seek the company of negative people, and listen to discouraging music. Overcoming an attitude of negativity requires that we stop feeding it. We have the responsibility to guard our hearts (Proverbs 4:23). It helps to filter all entertainment and outside information through this sentence: “Does this lift up my heart in praise to God or pull it down into anger and depression?”
A Christian prone to grumpiness can handle it in the same way we overcome any negative trait. We recognize it as sin, ask God’s help in changing, and take action to create a new normal. Jack’s vision is a bit much. Lofty goal at best. The outcry against a full scale deportation will burst our eardrums with all the wailing and gnashing of teeth.
The DACA kids are still here along with their parents if that is any example, so if recent history is to judge I’d say it will be something less than Jack would have us envision. It’s the criminal and saboteur class that will get the physical treatment just as before and since there are many moar of them know than before, it will certainly be a grand undertaking. The rest will either weather the economic storm of slimmed down benefits if they plan on staying which will depend on them finding non tax payer funded jobs or they’ll deport themselves just as before, though we never really got there the last time.
Like the tide going out after a massive storm they’ll be plenty of wet spots left where the ground has been swamped and drainage will be take a long concerted effort, but those spots are primarily in the progressive states and localities.
All that assumes a peaceful transition back toward normalcy. Expect push back. Cleaning up swampy progressive stuff is going to be messy. Besides when Trump talks details on this subject the farthest he goes is to talk about the criminal class. Hope is that as the tide goes out it sucks away layers of progressives with it but that is moar than one can hope for and that will take some ingenuity.

Sheriffs also have the ability to deputize locals as need if things get really bad. That is why having Constitutional sheriffs is so important.
Getting them out is easy. Government could do it two weeks or less.
1) cut off ALL government aid to alien invaders
2) make it a crime with a minimum sentence of 5 years for everyone in an ownership position of any corporation, along with the CEO and all board members, for hiring any illegal alien
3) make it so that any illegal alien caught for committing any crime gets a mandatory 10 year sentence on top of whatever the sentence is for their crime
4) give 30 days notice, then enact a $10K per head bounty, payable to any citizen, for the citizen’s arrest of any illegal alien

Carl, this is so true, thank you for todays lesson. It is a balm on my spirit after this past week, I haven’t been grumpy, more like sad. Someone I love very much but who is grumpy and hurtful said to me “that’s just me-that’s in me” as if it’s unconquerable. Well dang, that’s in all of us.
Happiness is a choice, and it is easier to make when we focus on how good God has been to us.

On a happy note, Hubby went to town and bought feed for our animals. I am not sure what the exact story is, but the guy in front of him bought all the feed for us. 😍

People don’t realize that the coasts of the United States are biologically isolated in a lot of things. I grew up in California and saw my first woodchuck when I was in my 40’s, adjacent to a parking lot in Tennessee. I levitated my way back into my rental car and slammed the door….I didn’t know what to make of it at all.
I dispatched a woodchuck with a shovel about 3 decades ago. It was very near my neighbor’s two year old son and obviously RABID.
We had just had a warning from our Vet that we needed to give our horses rabies shots. Some hunters had trapped raccoons in the south and released them in MA. Turns out those raccoons were rabid and the disease spread.
What kind of imbecile moves vermin like raccoons around? Did they take sewer rats back on the return trip?
We are talking Taxechusetts here. That makes then imbeciles until proven other wise.

The struggle is real!
Since the beginning of Covid, our little town has seen a lot of growth, and the traffic is TERRIBLE!
The town just isn’t set up for the amount of traffic in it now. And with snow and ice like we get, the newcomers are just hopeless drivers.
I am the family “errand runner.” So most days, I am out and about in the traffic. And I am GRUMPY in it! I am making an effort to be peaceful while the guy in front of me can’t figure out how to turn left at the five-lane stoplight (just take the available lane!), but it is so hard!
Thank you for the timely reminder, Carl, that I need to rely on God to help me, and that I need to be a light in the world, not a grumpy Christian.
Oh honey, I feel ya, it’s so so so hard in traffic. So hard.
I am patient when driving my husband is not . I do not see the point of rushing when driving and being impatient. I am not a slow driver but go with the flow.
I see urgency in other parts of my life but driving is not one of them. Patience is a virtue I tell myself. I guess I brainwashed myself for repeating it to myself 🙂

We get snow here on ocassion and it is bad news because we do not have the equipment to hand it.

We have decent removal, but sometimes it’s just not enough. And the out-of-staters drive like maniacs on it.
Our roads get plowed but no salt or salt. That means we end up with ICE.

I have seen 10″ garden snakes in my garden. They look like sticks . I am not afraid of them.
My son had snakes. He and his friend, who was a zoo keeper for snakes, came to my house and then go off further south to collect snakes for the zoo. My son took pictures of them. He is an excellent photographer and his hobby.

Moms have to go with their girls in the bathroom. I never trusted the bathrooms still do not therefore I am very selective where I use the bathroom. My husband waits for me on the outside. Some places have bathrooms far out of the way anyone can access them no one would know.
I remember going into a restroom and I saw men’s shoes in the stall I left ever since I am leery of public restrooms.
Can not do that in schools and that is where some attacks have happened.

In keeping with Carl’s Sunday emphasis on spiritual matters I thought I would pass along my reading today from a book on the styles discipleship depicted in the different books of the New Testament. I found this section on 1 Peter enlightening. The author compares1 Peter with Bunyan’s Christian classic Pilgrim’s Progress. It has been some years since I last read that book. It seems it is time to refresh my memory. I apologize for the length of the excerpt but I believe it to be worth the time investment for those who desire to follow Christ.
The key to Peter’s call for sinlessness in word, and so in actions, lies in his abrupt transition from Jesus as example in 2:21–23 to Jesus as redeemer in 2:24. For having held up Jesus’ behavior in the face of unjust suffering as a model for Christian behavior in verses 21–23, he continues in verse 24: “He himself carried our sins in his body to the cross, so that we, having parted with those sins, might live for what is right.” The change from “you” and “your” in verses 20–21 (also v 18) to “we” and “our” in verse 24 marks a shift to a distinctly confessional formulation in verse 24 of the common early Christian belief in salvation through Christ’s death.
1 Peter cuts through all the modern debates over whether the cross of Christ is an example of self-giving love or a divinely appointed means of reconciliation and redemption. Without question, it is both in this letter—with the two aspects not in tension. Each, in fact, requires the other. Christians can put sin behind them and follow in Jesus’ footsteps only because they have been redeemed by his death. Discipleship, therefore, demands more than a passive acceptance of the saving benefits of that death. It is nothing less than active participation in Jesus’ death and all that led up to it.
What exactly did Jesus’ death accomplish according to 1 Peter? Clearly, it is understood as a sacrificial or redemptive death, for Jesus’ blood cleanses from the guilt of sin (cf. 1:2, 19). But it is more! The meaning of 2:24 is not that Jesus bore the guilt of humanity’s sins in his body on the cross, but that he carried humanity’s sins in his body to the cross and left them there. He is more than a passive sacrificial victim. If not quite the Great High Priest of Hebrews, he is still in 1 Peter the active sin-bearer and destroyer of sins. He did not simply atone for sins so that people could go on sinning and then continually be forgiven. Rather, he quite literally took sins away, just as John the Baptist said he would in the Fourth Gospel: “Look, the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29; cf. 1 John 3:5).
What happens to the believer’s sins according to Peter is what happened to Christian’s sins in Bunyan’s allegorical classic:
He ran thus till he came at a place somewhat ascending; and upon that place stood a Cross, and a little below in the bottom, a sepulchre. So I saw in my dream, that just as Christian came up with the Cross, his burden loosed from off his shoulders, and fell from off his back; and began to tumble, and so continued to do till it came to the mouth of the sepulchre, where it fell in, and I saw it no more (Pilgrim’s Progress, 81–82).
In a similar way, disciples of Jesus in 1 Peter have “parted with” their sins so as to “live for what is right” (v 24). Christ himself “finished with sin” when he suffered (4:1; cf. Heb 9:28). And those who would be his disciples must arm themselves “with the same resolve” so as to live the rest of their lives “no longer for human impulses but to do the will of God” (4:1–2; cf. Michaels, 1 Peter 225–28).
Clearly, Peter’s standards for discipleship border on perfectionism. Yet it is not a perfectionism divorced from reality. He knows that the kind of “realism” that begins by recounting the inevitability of sin and failure in the lives of Christians is not going to make an impact—either by word or by example—on a hostile society. He is encouraged by the fact that his addressees have already made a decisive break with their past (1:18, 22–23; 4:3–4), and he dares to hope that their resistance to “the impulses that once drove you in your ignorance” will continue (1:14; 2:1, 11).
Like another early Christian perfectionist, the author of 1 John, Peter probably knows: “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:8–9). Peter never quite says that. Yet he does urge his readers to “remain constant in your love for each other, for love covers many sins” (4:8). Only in a communal setting of mutual love and forgiveness, he knows, is it possible to realize the ideal of following in Jesus’ footsteps by putting sin away and doing good for the rest of our lives.
The great journey, however, does not stop with the cross. When Christian in Pilgrim’s Progress left his burden of sin at the cross, his journey had little more than begun. Jesus’ journey, too, led past the cross to the resurrection, and finally to heaven.

There was a time when doctors told people they do not need taking baby Aspirin guess what? Doctor put my husband back on aspirin. 🙄
Why did they take people off before Covid? They told him it does not help.
This is a puzzle for those who used to be on baby aspirin and the doctor took them off.
It is not unusual after an invasive procedure for the use of aspirin to be prescribed to combat the small probability of a blood clot around the invasion site. It also aids in preventing the small possibility of a clot forming around the stent.
Yes I understand that but he is on two different meds for blood thinning. Now Aspirin is also back in addition 🙂
