Yes. I don’t subscribe to the idea that no mainstream news outlet should ever be read or paid attention to. Of course we have to be careful and parse everything, but if we hide our heads in the sand and only believe what we see on “alternative” media, which includes internet influencers who have no regard for the truth, then we remain in ignorance.
The story points out that there are people trying to influence the elections this year and that we can’t believe everything we see or hear. Whether that includes that particular report doesn’t change the basic fact that there are liars everywhere, many of whom appear to be on our own side.
Honestly, I don’t know who lies more – BBC (MI6 in drag) or Russian media (FSB in drag).
I would add certain internet influencers who purport to be on our side to that list.
I did a search for the story that I presented here. In 6 pages of hits, there is not one conservative outlet reporting that the story is false. Now, one could take that to mean the story has no merit. But one could also take it to mean that conservatives and conservative outlets only report on the things they want to be true.
That the first lady of Ukraine spent our tax money on a luxury car is a story that our side wants to be outraged about. IF it turns out not to be true, many of our news sources bury their heads in the sand rather than report the truth.
That is my point. It is not to defend the BBC or the leftist news media. It is to highlight that there is bias on our media side as well. Some people will believe anything that fits the narrative they want to be true. But the truth matters.
So is there an American operating a disinformation outfit in an effort to try to influence our elections? We’ll never know to even look if we discount every bit of news that we don’t like, or every news outlet that we know to be a propaganda site. Sometimes they report things that conservative ones don’t, and sometimes they get things right.
Did they get this one right? If they did, then it’s valuable information for us to know. If they didn’t, there is knowledge to be gained from that as well.

Therein lies the problem TT. Without some level of trust there can be no meaningful communication. Is it true?, will always be the first question. Depending on your own experience and interest that will likely tip the scale one way. The devastating consequence is chaos not influence.
Yes. And my point is that there are devastating consequences when, in order to avoid the chaos of not knowing, we only believe what we want to be true, and/or we only investigate something if it accords with our desired narrative.
I don’t think any reasonable person, regardless of worldview, would choose to believe only what they want to be true. Certainly, they will give added weight to their preference but all swim in the same pool of distrust, not able to discern what is true or false. Under those circumstances reasonable people will choose sides but will remain skeptical until they believe they have valid data. I do not think there was any historical period when governments could be trusted but integrity was not always lacking in the media. Of course, they might put their spin on interpretation of the facts but they were not the outright propagandists we see today.
I started to write that we will have to agree to disagree on this because I’ve seen a number of people choose to believe only what they want to be true.
But I think it hinges on the word “reasonable.” Perhaps the people I refer to are not reasonable. I have not found them to be analytical or logical in their thinking.
I hear you on this. Reasonable means that they are susceptible to reason. There are a LOT of people on both sides who are not influenced by reason.

First this point. I read the BBC article, and I’m not impressed. Not impressed at all. They word things very carefully to attack mostly by insinuation and implication, and are VERY thin (if almost absent) on what I would call actual proof. In my opinion they’re defending the censorship complex which we already know has lied as badly or worse than what they’re IMPLYING the Russians are doing. But read that article carefully. They are very sneaky in the wording. Yes, the Russians are sending out propaganda. The problem is that so much of it is TRUE.
Now – back to the beginning of the fake news thing.
I remember the early “fake news” that CIA and Google themselves created and then tried to claim was coming from our side, when the whole “fake news” thing started (and was then brilliantly boomeranged by TRUMP, calling the mockingbird media “THE Fake News”).
The hoax was pure false flag disinformation, launched by NeverTrump, CIA overseas assets, and lots of people who were allegedly on our side, but IMO were not. This is why I’m not even going to assume that BBC is either right or wrong on this. The other side literally helped a HOAX about right-wing disinformation.
I’m not falling for an improved version of that. I’m not believing the story about the car is necessarily true, but I’m not going to believe that it’s necessarily false. I just know we’re surrounded by both really wicked liars and multiple layers of idiots.

And if we keep our heads in the sand and read and believe only what fits our chosen narrative (by *never* considering what the BBC says, for example), we will not have the whole picture and we will have no chance of getting to the truth. I would like to see us get to the point where we can see what the enemy is doing and discover that there might be some truth in their story-telling — some facts that they might be twisting or using to further their own agenda — and that that could lead us in a direction we might not otherwise have gone in.
I detest when a narrative comes out that everyone falls for because it fits their current beliefs, and then it becomes heresy to question that narrative. And then if that narrative is shown to be false, everyone still believes it and spreads it.
I’m not saying that’s exactly what happened here, but all the pushback over the idea that maybe the woman didn’t buy a car is over the top, IMO.

We were using the original Freon as a NON-FLAMMABLE propellant. The plant switch to a pure hydrocarbon, I think it was propane, which is HIGHLY flammable.
People forget there are other uses. Chlorofluorocarbons were also used in Primatene Mist.
Primatene Mist until 2011, contained chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were banned because the EPA said they contributied to ozone layer depletion. It was not until 2019, Primatene Mist re-emerged with a new formulation. The poor with asthma were freaking out because they could no longer get the ONLY OTC medication. (I stocked up.)
Apparently so. A few weeks ago I mentioned the news around here is that next year everyone using the heat pump system (which is everybody I know) will either have to get a new one or pay for retrofitting for this new stuff because “it’s more flammable” than what we’re using now

To get them high enough into the atmosphere (five spheres), you’d need thrust at the level of a volcano or rocket. The stuff leaking out of AC units wouldn’t go anywhere near that high on its own.

A couple of points – HFCs are not the exclusive refrigerant. Commercial/industrial refrigeration units use ammonia. Propane is a straight-across swap for motor vehicle freon systems and might work for other HFCs.
