My Cup Runneth Over
The phrase my cup runneth over is the King James Version’s wording of Psalm 23:5. Other versions say “my cup overflows.” A cup runs over when it cannot hold all that is being poured into it. The emphasis of Psalm 23 is the Good Shepherd’s loving care for His sheep (cf. John 10:11, 14). The Lord not only gives His people what they need (Psalm 23:1–2), but He supplies abundance in the midst of difficult times (verse 5). This abundance is not limited to material blessings under the Old Covenant, but it also includes the Holy Spirit’s future outpouring upon all who ask (Luke 11:13; Acts 2:1–4).
The Bible emphasizes the excessive love, blessing, and power that God desires to pour out on those who love Him (Malachi 3:10; Lamentations 3:22; Psalm 108:4). Jesus reflected God’s generosity when He said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). Paul continues that theme in Ephesians 3:20 and describes God as the One “who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.” Romans 8:37 promises that we are “more than conquerors through Him who loves us.” The message echoed in each passage is that of God’s excessive grace and provision for every area of our lives. He is not stingy, nor are His blessings confined to temporal things. In Christ we can have overflowing joy, overflowing love, and overflowing peace. We can bear everlasting fruit for God’s kingdom, and we can overcome impossible challenges when the Holy Spirit fills our hearts until our “cup runneth over.”
The Bible records many mighty things done when people were filled with (i.e., controlled by) the Holy Spirit (Exodus 31:2–3; Ezekiel 43:5; Luke 1:67; Acts 4:31). We are urged to be filled with the Spirit as well (Ephesians 5:18; Galatians 5:16, 25). However, as a glass cannot be filled with milk if it is already filled with mud, we cannot be filled with the Spirit when we are already filled with sin, pride, or self-will. Before we can be filled to overflowing, we must be willing to empty ourselves of everything that would hinder the Spirit’s working in our lives. It is only when our hearts are filled with God that we can accomplish all He desires to do in and through us. His grace knows no limits for those whose hearts are wholly His (2 Chronicles 16:9a). He desires to fill us with His Spirit until our cup runneth over.

This one is better than the one I used in my Moon post (which was designed to illustrate a different point).
Note that they superimposed faint blue lines on the moon to help one distinguish how it turns; helpful especially during “new” moon near the top of the diagram where the surface features are in shadow.

You’re welcome! Happy to help. It is hard for me to visualize 3D connections without a video across time. Graph analysis is like that too.
There’s an analytic you can run on a table of data called articulation points. If you watch how nodes (dots) connect with lines across time, you can see the nodes that you could remove to break the network into smaller networks.
If that is a terror group or multiple gangs or mobsters, you can find critical ones to pull out of the mix to divide them and make less troublesome groups.
For example, if Mohamed is the only IED maker, target him first. If you get him in prison or otherwise unable to make IEDs, all the terrorists he gave IEDs to can still cause harm, but not as much.

I thought that the side we never see at night was turned toward us in daytime. If that is not so then disregard my comment, but if it is so then any apparatus on the the side we don’t see at night would not be visible to us in daytime even though it would be pointing at us.
It’s not so…and I will explain. The side we never see at night, is never seen because it never faces the Earth.
An analogy, imagine you’re dancing with someone, and you’re holding both their hands and the two of you are spinning in a circle. They always face you, but someone not on the dance floor will see all sides of each of you. This is tidal locking and I think I actually covered it in my most recent “science post” about the Moon (see sidebar).
Unfortunately my analogy is not a very good one because even though the Moon is constrained to always face the same way towards Earth, Earth is not constrained to always face the same way to the Moon. The dancer analogy describes a situation where *both* bodies are constrained to always face each other.
Another problem (a much more basic one) with your original thought is there are plenty of occasions where you can see the Moon in daytime, and even then, you see the same side you always see at night.

Just got back from there now, phew 70+ years of wrongthink takes some ironing out.
So the moon rotates on its own axis whilst at the same time orbiting the earth and the time it takes to orbit the earth is such that only one side of it is facing the earth ever, and it takes somewhere around a month to complete its orbit round the earth.
I looked at the illustration, magnified and each side separately.

My dad served in WWII with an Illinois man named Gene Jackson. He and his wife Betty were among my parents’ dearest friends. After the war everyone came home from California and Gene started building his own carnival rides.
Betty and Gene stayed in that business throughout their lives. They went to Florida in the winters and then had carnivals in small towns across Missouri and probably in southern Illinois too in warmer weather. I loved visiting with them because we got to go on all the rides for free and they were so kind.
I remember seeing one of the ride workers getting onto the merry go round after it had started moving. Being a kid, I tried it too. I grabbed one of the vertical bars, but could not swing myself up into it. Without a second thought, the ride operator, came around and pulled me on up. I don’t remember anyone fussing at me about my foolishness. I learned that part the hard way… LOL
For a time, when they were older, Betty and Gene also ran a Dairy Queen in a small Missouri town. The carnival was a family business and their two children grew up in that world.
In his own way, my Dad was great at making family fun for us too. Dad got us out on the Mississippi River each summer. We would swim (with a skibelt on), do the twist in beach sand that was waterlogged so we ended up down to our knees in sand, wave at passing barges, fish, and BBQ. Sometimes we would go through the locks at the nearest dam across the river. It was cool holding the ropes as the water level dropped or rose.
It always confuses me when kids say they are bored… I wish all kids could have dads more like mine or his brothers and friends.

(Jupiter has four BIG moons and a bunch of tiny ones that couldn’t be seen with the telescopes we had back then, Saturn has one BIG moon and a number of intermediate-sized ones they had no trouble seeing back then, plus a bunch of tiny ones).
Our moon is in this device, but it happens to be right smack dab behind Mars (fourth ball out from the Sun) in the photo. You can see the arm and pivot for it below Mars.

That’s probably a very high resolution picture.
Almost certainly one of the key skills to having a “layman’s feel” for astronomy is to be able to visualize what’s going on, and unfortunately that was the hardest thing to teach without expensive “toys” in science classrooms.
Now of course we have somebody doing excellent animations. There’s also a piece of software (not sure what its name is) that will let you pick a position in space and then create a fast movie of what you’d see (I may have posted one of those for an eclipse discussion, you start out looking from Earth from very far away and then the Moon passes by, not directly in front of the Earth from your point of view, but almost, so you can see the shadow cross.
And then on the other hand (and this is a blatant digression you can ignore; it’s a different subject):
I’ve yet to find a good animation for describing precession of the equinoxes in such a way that you can understand what it would do to the night sky…I found one years ago that was close, but the guy doing the animation was having the point of view orbit the earth, which completely confused the point. Because of that, It took me a while to figure out it was a correct video, just done stupidly.
The good news is you won’t live long enough to be affected by precession of the equinoxes, unless you are part of that secret race of people who have five digit lifespans. The bad news is the phenomenon often gets referenced in stuff ranging from pseudo-science to fringe, speculative stuff about the ancients.
AH – that is what it’s called – the “precession of the equinoxes”!!!
I was using a GLOBE, and trying to think of sunrise and sunset during equinoxes, in particular where the sun would be during mornings and evenings, at US latitudes. It’s complicated!!!
Be very careful you’re thinking about the same thing I am when I use that phrase.
I’m referring to the fact that the Earth’s axis shifts its orientation in such a way that it retains it’s 23.5 degree tilt with respect to the plane of the Earth’s orbit, but nevertheless, will eventually have northern hemisphere summer where it presently has northern hemisphere winter. That causes the north celestial pole draw a large circle in the sky. It takes about 24,000 years to make a complete circle.
One thing I really hate about many globes is that they draw this tilted line for the ecliptic on the globe…but that gives the impression that the line (representing a plane) is attached to the Earth. I’d rather they created a ring attached to the mount that the Earth rotates under. I could use that to not just explain the ecliptic properly, but could even explain precession of the equinoxes. As it is I have to tell people that no the Sun isn’t over the Gulf of Guinea on the first day of Spring.
Gotcha! So you’re talking about the precession of the Earth’s axis of rotation against the sky, that moves us through the zodiac constellations at DAWN over 24000 years, and THAT’S WHY all the big deal about “Age of Aquarius”.
I was thinking of a smaller cycle – the shift in how the Earth “faces” the sun during the year. What is that called? And which direction does that move in, during the year?
As far as I know it’s just called “the seasons” or maybe “Earth revolving around the sun” (I think most astronomers use the word “revolution” to distinguish it from the rotation about the axis).
I’m not sure what you think might be moving so I’m not sure what your last question actually means.
OK, here is a properly mounted globe (alas it’s expensive as hell at $2K but it is a 20 inch globe).
The horizontal “ring” around the globe properly represents the ecliptic, i.e. the plane of the Earth’s orbit.
Imagine placing that some 50 feet away from a light bulb (representing the Sun). Imagine you are directly east of that light bulb, and set it up so the axis tilts toward the east (away from the Sun). That’s northern hemisphere winter. Then, pick it up, and, without changing the orientation of the base, move it to the other side of the “Sun”. You’re now west of the Sun, with the axis still tilted toward the east, but now the tilt is toward the Sun, northern hemisphere summer. You can walk in a circle around the sun with this, as long as you always keep the axis tilted toward the East (and you walk from east to north to west to south) you’re demoing the seasons.
Excellent – I get it. My question is then simply which way do you walk with a “Globe North Is Up” globe, in a “We Are Standing South and Looking North” room, as you described East and West before us, to mimic the actual order of the seasons? Or stated differently, does the Earth revolve clockwise or counter-clockwise in your described model?

That’s true of the Earth’s spin about its own axis, and also of orbital motion about the Sun…and for that matter the Sun’s own rotation. Almost everything “spins” counter clockwise in our Solar System. This is called “prograde.” Major exceptions being Venus’s daily rotation, Uranus’ daily rotation, and the orbit of Triton about Neptune. Minor exceptions are a lot of the tiny outer moons of the outer planets (meaning they’re probably captured asteroids). The “clockwise as seen from over the north pole” direction is called “retrograde”

There has been talk for decades about eventually building a radio telescope there. Not so that it can’t be seen from Earth, but because Earth is noisy what with Fake News being broadcast constantly. None of that “seeable” from Farside.
(I tend to think of radio as being audible/not audible which makes sense given what we oftentimes use those frequencies for, but it’s really another form of light.)

The original Russian word is “царь”. and that first letter represents a /ts/ sound. Many English users will have a seizure before they can pronounce /ts/ at the beginning of a word (though they have no trouble with the sound in the middle or end as in “pizza” or “its”) but it’s a /ts/, and I can’t understand the fetish for spelling it “tz.” (And “cz” makes little sense either; in no language that we could have borrowed the word from does that spell /ts/)
I ran into an article that claims there’s a generic word for ruler that the Russians spell with “tz” that gets confused for царь (specifically the Russian monarch) but that makes no sense to me; Russians can’t spell anything that way because they don’t use our alphabet. But even if that article is actually right, Nicholas I was a tsar, not a tzar.
Good thing she’s writing to Americans that understand her or we’d be all lost with her vulgate spelling. 😆

Getting to be fun watching Judge Cannon in action. Trump has till June 14th to reply to Smith’s latest action after which Smith must reply by June 21st. This is going to cause Smith to blow a gasket. No more simply rolling over to DOJ demands.

Half right – the hostages are most likely already dead. There’s no valid reason for IDF not to go in and end Hamas once and for all.
