California has such a strange drainage situation (everything in the middle of the state has to flow out past San Francisco) that the Atlantic Coast barely makes sense.
Here is a map of our rivers. We have a LOT! And many drain directly into the Atlantic.

I was talking with my insurance people while making sure I did not have more insurance than needed. She said the cost of building materials is still very high. On the other hand, I have no external structures except the mailbox. Still they give me “free” insurance for external structures. So, I have free insurance to cover a $61k mailbox.

I go into 2 Habitat for Humanity stores here a lot and it’s gobsmacking the things a crafty guy could use, beautiful cabinets, old doors, plantation shutters, tile, etc.

Anticipating having to move to Germany was a frightening experience for me.

Also that home will feel like hers and she will get to know people.

The Fiancee seems to love the house (that I extensively remodeled and rebuilt) more than she loves me.
While most of the constraints and limitations of what I have done to this place are because it’s here. If I had this same house on five acres in another state, I could add a private spa, quilting studio, and substantial storage — and it wouldn’t cost a freakin’ arm-and-leg in property taxes.

The problem is that I’ve made this house very nice. Mind you, every time I had a possible improvement she kvetched through the planning and freaked-out after demo — but I have built the nicest house in the area.
Which she has proceeded to ill-maintain and abuse. I spend substantial time repairing things she has broken or abandoned.
And I have come to utterly loathe and despise this place. None of my favorite reasons to be in Silicon Valley exist any more, and all of my creations in this house are wrecked.
Having my possessions stolen was just another reminder that I am not welcome here — this is not fertile soil for my efforts to bring fruit.

Well, if you move there into some cheap fixer-upper near where she would need to transfer, and you’re fixing THAT place instead of your current one, she has an interesting choice that will shift in your favor over time. She can be where the fixing is, or not.
Yes, NC is a wonderful state. LOTS to visit and see.
The Fiancee was tasked to open a branch office of her Silicon Valley company to run tech support in the Eastern Time Zone. She spent many weeks out there in the Triad — and I flew out and tooled around the state.
[She set the office set up nicely, and got it running, and a couple of corporate actions eliminated the tech support site and merged her company into its dominant competitor.]
She generally stayed in Greensboro, so I’ve seen a lot of High Point and Winston-Salem. I’ve been to Charlotte, and Raleigh, and Cary. I’ve been to Asheboro and Asheville and Hickory, and over the hill to my aunt’s place in Knoxville and back (and Pigeon Forge).
One of my peregrinations had me returning from the Triangle out across some country to somewhere around Asheboro — I think it may have been US64 (but it might well have been NC27) and I was just captivated by how green and beautiful it was.
California hills are green for about six weeks, and are brown the other 10-1/2 months of the year. I was zipping along, trying to get back before dark, and the countryside was gorgeous and the hills were full of trees. I imagine that Gail lives in such a place.

My girl friend is from AZ and IA, she LOVES looking at the hills and the trees. Starting late Feb when the Daffys start showing it is BLOOM BLOOM BLOOM… I love the various delicate shades of trees as the trees start to leaf out. And the red, yellow & white haze from the tiny tree blossoms.
Right now the red bud trees are blooming. 😄

When I have the chance I grab seeds from trees of different colors than I have that I see on my trips. Now I have to find a good place to plant them.
Are the seeds in the flowers? They’re all over the place here, I could get some too
I have never seen anything resembling a crape myrtle spring up from the piles of flowers we’ve had every year. I suspect that our tree is a sterile hybrid.
They get a fruit the size of a cherry pit. That is what I grab. Now I just have to select a place and find the time to plant them.
I used to have a 100 house plants and a nice garden when I lived up north. Down here I just have not had the time for a garden too.

Torrential rains since about Midnight last night. The wind is also now blowing hard. Tornado Watch until at least 1PM today. Flood Warning until at least 4PM today. Local weather is saying up to 9 inches total between late last night into last Friday night.
Got about 3 hours’ sleep last night, between one thing and another related to bad weather prep, monitoring rainfall via the radio, etc.
At least one tornado has hit areas south of Raleigh.
Trees are starting to fall, everywhere in this area. This is my biggest concern. There are “short root system” pine trees all over the place. They’re in every yard around here, including mine.
Roads and streets are flooding, and/or have high standing water, and/or have fallen trees on them.
The power has snapped off, then back on, several times. I expect complete power outage by around 1PM today, if not earlier.
The place where I live abuts a public-private golf course. A tributary stream of the Eno River runs along the edge. The golf course and the stream are starting to flood. The Eno River will likely be a flood stage by early this afternoon. Other rivers in the area, like the Neuse River and the Tar River, are also pretty close to flood stage.
I’m holding tight so far. Have supplies for at least several days if the power goes completely out.

At around 40 minutes they talk about this case. (Jay) Jayanta Bhattacharya was told, although he had plenty of evidence that they were targeting HIS IDEAS, since he was not specifically NAMED by the government when they asked Social media to implement censorship, he had no standing.
So as long as the government CENSORS IDEAS it is now LEGAL. They just can not censor an INDIVIDUAL.

Local weather says up to 9 inches of rain by Friday. I expect power outages any minute. Trees may start falling by Noon if this keeps up. Hope to Almighty God that Solas and I are safe and don’t have to make a run for it.

Are you above or below the fall line?
Specifically, much of Raleigh is drained by the Neuse river, which passes through the city. The falls of the Neuse are underwater due to a dam completed in 1981 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falls_Lake ). If you are in the Neuse drainage area, and more elevated than Falls Dam, you are unlikely to see severe flooding because it would overtop and breach the dam and flood the low country very badly.
I have frontage on one of the other rivers. Luckily the house is 100 ft above the flood plain. Unfortunately some of my neighbors were STUPID ENOUGH to build ON the flood plain near the river.
I have seen that area a good 3 feet or more under water.
I am more worried about trees. Esp the ones directly south of the house.
I could understand building barns, livestock shelters, and such in the flood plain. Houses? Garages? Not so much.
As my geology prof said. NEVER build in a river AND a flood plain IS PART OF THE RIVER, it is just the part that is not used very much.
The flood plain does make wonderful grazing and crop land though. All the very nice top soil that was on the top of my hill is now on the flood plain. I KNOW it is at least 2 1/2 feet of rich black soil from digging fence post holes.
In California, many residential areas are known as particular Valleys — I live in the Santa Clara Valley, I used to live in the Santa Clarita Valley, regions around LA are the San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley, Walnut-Pomona Valley…..(and, then, there’s the “LA Basin”, which is a huge tell).
Luxury areas include the Hollywood Hills, Berkeley Hills, Oakland Hills, Los Altos, and such…..in Santa Barbara, it’s “La Mesa” and the Riviera.
I went to school in the mid-west. I made sure we built just down hill from the highest point. My Ex Father-in-law’s house was built in a similar situation and a LARGE tornado JUMPED over their house.😱

I can remember standing at the window in the dorm and watching the funnel clouds form, touch down and then get sucked back up into the clouds.
North Carolina is nice. We get tornadoes, hurricanes, ice storms AND earthquakes.
Luckily it is not all that frequently for any of them.

I should note that one of the houses that sent my sister and I through college was built in Placerita Canyon. The (normally) dry wash cut off 20% of the back yard.
My dad, the civil engineer, built the slab foundation about two feet higher than was required by code. It also had a bunch of rebar in the slab.
One year, during the rainy season, a tree fell over into the wash about a quarter mile upstream from our house. That deflected the running water across the channel into some natural bank (adobe mud) on the opposite side, which eroded quite a bit……but then sent it back over to our side into our neighbor’s back yard which was built on fill.
It took out a substantial part of the rear 25′ of his fenced yard, including most of his horse corrals.

Thank you. I replied to your earlier query above in the discussion thread. Basically, “the situation is rapidly deteriorating” around the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill areas and beyond.
The golf course and stream that edges it (a tributary of the Eno River) are starting to flood. Flood warning and tornado watches/warnings all over the place.
The trees are falling due to the high winds and the completely saturated ground. Trees falling is my main concern. Roads, streets closed all over the place. Local weather predicts up to 9 inches total of rain to fall until Friday afternoon. Local weather also monitoring the local rivers (Eno, Neuse, Tar among them.) Flood stage for these rivers will be reached by tomorrow morning to afternoon.
I expect complete power outage by around 1PM today.
So far, I’m holding tight. Only got about 4 hours’ sleep last night.
The storm is headed right thru the Piedmont. Wilmington to Fayetteville to Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill.
We are getting hit with waves of high wind & rain and then nothing.
My impression of the Piedmont is that it has substantially more hills than the major metropolitan valleys of California. Flooding would be restricted to those places very near creeks and streams.
OTOH, to my untrained Californian eye, it appears that much of the coastal plain is flooded more or less continually.
Well I certainly would not live there!
And yes the Piedmont is hills. Literally fossilized sand dunes in the southern area. North of Fayetteville you get into clay and gravel, but still HILLS.
On one of the roads I travel which is quite straight, you can literally come to the top of one of the hills and see the ‘dunes’
The area with gravel is something else. It is a thin layer of top soil over what looks like a gravel driveway! The stones are rounded and go from pea size to the size of your head.

the mall we used to frequent in NY–closest to where we live in PA– lost its anchor stores–Macy, JCPenney, Sears…so they repurposed. there are still smaller stores in the mall, but there’s an RV/boat storage place on one end now. the athletic shoe store has turned into pickleball courts, and the Sears store is now a go cart track for kids. the upper level in Sears has viewing areas for adults if they want and food items for purchase. and Macy’s, i believe, is now a gym.
SOmeone in management was SMART and CREATIVE. Give people a reason to WANT to go to the mall instead of using Amazon.

Update on my friend:
she was supposed to come home today from the rehabilitation center but yesterday her oxygen dropped to 67 when she stood to do her exercises–no indication of why. they managed to bring it back up to 93 but only while she is in bed.
she was enjoying the physical therapy because she able to get back some muscle strength that she lost. But unfortunately no one–no one–has given her any information about her test results. she said once she goes home, she can access her chart on line and see the results, but will have no explanation of what they mean. I think this is disgraceful.
and a prayer request for my brother: he goes in for angioplasty tomorrow and is very concerned. our father had quadruple bypass surgeries (16 years apart) and was eligible for another one, but he declined. Dad had a heart murmur when he was born and issues his whole life (which my brother hasn’t) but my brother fears his future will be the same as Dad’s.

they told her that her stroke was mild and they needed the beds in that section for people with more severe infirmaries. then she got moved to another hospital altogether.
she is baffled.
no information on her extremely high BP or heart rate. i asked if she was given a new medication to control it, she said no.

considering all the apparent issues she’s having AFTER the stroke, i would say so!
Wow, that is really crazy. It sounds like she needs someone to advocate for her with these doctors to give her the information she needs. I can’t believe they’re moving her around like this and not even telling her why. The post-COVID medical system is becoming worse and worse.

We normally take care of our own. The farmers and such grab their chain saws and start clearing roads as soon as the storm rains stop. Big problem is the downed power lines AND the trees that have fallen into the rivers and fetched up against the bridges.
We had a major storm a few years ago that literally carved away several feet of river bank near a bridge. That meant some BIG trees ended up in the river. They have periodically had a crane fishing out parts of the trees ever since. They were there again a few weeks ago.
we do that here too. our road has several “camps” and vacation homes, but we’re just about the only full time residents here. then the one neighbor retired and now spends more time here. a former pilot, the man has $$ to burn and apparently bought a bulldozer. hubby and I get out the chain saws and he brings the dozer to move trunks off the road…
We use tractors and some of the guys have backhoes, small and large.
I just went out to feed my elderly ponies (AGAIN) and say a cop at the top of the hill. That probably means the shortest road into town is now flooded. 🙄

Haven’t been to those channels but what you describe has been accurate, becoming more prevalent this last month or longer, especially with sound stopping, but that can normally be over come.
As to Youtube or not, it does have by far the larger reach. We are going to just have to muscle through even their script kiddies toss in malicious code to break our spirit. Best we should hope for is that they use more than one platform to get their messages out. Meanwhile I doubt they are breaking anyone’s spirit, which only resolves to double down against their sadistic dumbness, but certainly chomps up our on line time. Good thing though is we can find out message everywhere and we are all on the same sheet of music.

UPDATE: Last night, Kamala Harris personally filed an updated Statement of Candidacy (aka Form 2) to designate Tim Walz as her running mate.
Since she used Biden’s personal candidate ID number (P80000722) instead of her own (P00009423), the FEC records are convoluted. Her newly filed Form 2 shows up on Biden’s personal FEC page. But if you look at the 2024 election cycle, Biden is erased and replaced with Harris, as if he was never never running for President.
Looking at Biden’s campaign committee’s FEC record, it’s now associated with both Biden’s and Harris’s candidacies for President for the period of 2020-2022. But that makes no sense, because Harris’s Presidential run in 2020 was never linked to Biden’s, and she ceased her campaign for President in 2020 and did not run again until 2024. Now Harris’s personal FEC candidate ID number (P00009423)—which is supposed to follow her for all Presidential campaigns for life—is somehow linked to Biden’s Presidential campaign in 2020. Only her Vice-Presidential campaign was ever linked to Biden’s, but that is separate from any Presidential campaigns.
The current 2023-2024 FEC record for “Biden for President” (aka “Harris for President,” ID number C00703975) is linked to two Presidential candidates. Both are both named “Kamala Harris.” One of these candidates is associated with Harris’s candidate ID number (P00009423), and the other “Kamala Harris” is associated with Biden’s candidate ID number (P80000722). The Statement of Candidacy that Kamala Harris filed on July 29, using Biden’s personal candidate ID number (P80000722), now shows up under Harris’s ID number. But last night’s filing for that same candidate—number P80000722—shows up for the other “Kamala Harris” who is running for President. (Based on what happened previously, I suspect the FEC will shift these records in the future, to make it seem like there aren’t so many discrepancies between the names and the ID numbers.)
Confused? That’s because these filings from Harris are irregular. If Kamala Harris had used her own candidate ID number, like every other candidate in modern history, this wouldn’t have been so complicated, but then it would have been difficult to make the case that she’s entitled to Biden’s war chest. Undoubtedly, these filings are trying to circumvent those pesky campaign finance laws. By the way, since Walz has never run for President, he doesn’t have his own FEC candidate ID for a Presidential run. According the the logic of Harris’s supporters, Walz is equally entitled to any funds from the campaign committee associated with ID number C00703975. And, just as Harris felt entitled to file an amended Statement of Candidacy using Biden’s personal candidate ID number because she was the Vice Presidential candidate, Walz could do the same, using Biden’s personal candidate ID number to run for President if he wanted to. The Democrats could pass this campaign down in perpetuity, without even obtaining the formal agreement of the prior candidate.
This reminds me of a system of government that isn’t considered anything like a democracy.

Other stories on this mentioned a cat but I didn’t see it. This video is rather short, the others long showing the dog lying on floor bed chewing on the battery until it catches fire in his mouth. The other dog was sitting above on the higher bed closest to the screen, but I never saw the cat until this. I can just imagine what was going through their minds as something as so innocent as chewing on a chew toy resulted in beloved home catching in flame. Sad story and the bad part is people have lithium batteries of different types all over the house now. Ackkk!

On Wednesday, August 7th, at approximately 7:30 a.m., our Animal Control Officers responded to a residential neighborhood of a report of a seriously injured puppy. Through their investigation, officers located video surveillance that shows the Suburban driving through a residential neighborhood in the area of Dahl Lane between Shawnee and Mohawk Drive.
The Suburban stops, and the driver exits the vehicle and appears to let a dog out of the vehicle. One minute later, the driver intentionally runs over the dog and drives away. A good Samaritan hears a dog in distress and immediately renders aid. The suspect vehicle returns, however, the suspect nor the suspect vehicle stops to help.
Our Animal Control Officers rushed the 2-month-old female Rottweiler to a local animal hospital where it underwent emergency surgery. The puppy sustained a broken rib cage, but she is expected to make a full recovery and is currently at the Orange County Animal Shelter.

🚨 TIM WALZ SIGNED A BILL MAKING PEDOPHILIA A PROTECTED CLASS!
In Feb 2023, Rep. Leigh Finke introduced HF 1655 redefining “Sexual Orientation.” Finke CROSSED OUT the section that precluded pedophiles from falling under the definition of “Sexual orientation.”
The Human Rights Act (HRA) written by Finke & signed by Walz revises the 1993 definition of sexual orientation to remove this line: “Sexual orientation does not include a physical or sexual attachment to children by an adult.”
The bill states: “provisions in this chapter shall be construed liberally.” So any Pedo-friendly Judge has carte blanche authority under “Minnesota Human Rights Legislation” to make pedophilia a protected class of sexual orientation!
Republicans @HarryNiska struggled manually to stop Walz & Leigh from decriminalizing pedophilia in the Human Rights Bill but were outnumbered by pedo-friendly Dems & Media.
Niska, a lawyer, added language to the bill that read: “The physical or sexual attachment to children by an adult is not a protected class under this chapter.”
But that sentence was removed during House-Senate committee negotiations & wasn’t in the final bill sent to Tim Walz.
