WEEKEND STARTER
Pumpkin Nog
Ingredients
- 12 eggs
- 1/2 pound sugar, divided
- 750 milliliters light rum (Abou-Ganim used 10 Cane)
- 5 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Garnish: whipped cream
- Garnish: freshly grated nutmeg
Steps
Serves 16.
- Separate the eggs and refrigerate the whites.
- In a mixing bowl, beat the yolks until creamy.
- Gradually add in 1/4 pound sugar, beating at high speed until thick.
- Stir in the rum, milk, pumpkin, vanilla and cinnamon, and chill for at least two hours.
- Beat the egg whites until soft peaks form.
- Add the remaining 1/4 pound sugar, beating the egg whites to stiff peaks.
- Fold the chilled rum mixture into the egg whites.
- Serve in Martini glasses garnished with a dollop of whipped cream and freshly grated nutmeg.
That’s rather complicated, isn’t it.

Well……for me, the Fiancee comes home.

Chaos, panic — both fit.
My “next to last” task on Wednesday was a deep laundering of our bedding, which included the cover to the mattress pad. It barely allowed a wash, but was adamantly opposed to drying — I’d put it in the dryer, and it would wrap itself up in a giant twist — and the middle would stay damp. After painstakingly untwisting it, I’d run it through the dryer again, and it would wrap itself up again. Took a lot of time.
I had to get it to work so that I’d have someplace to sleep myself, but it pushed all the “hide all the evidence” task to Thursday morning.
Oh my! I did laundry at The Cottage & used the outside clotheslines for the first two loads but ended up hanging things inside, due to weather issues, on the later ones. Took me back to when we actually lived there & augmented furnace heat w/ a wood-burning stove so the air was so dry but the drying laundry added back some needed moisture during those long, cold winters. There is a clothesline in the sleeping porch, that usually gets beach towels hung on it but worked decently for the sheets 🙂
Hope your fiancée appreciated All you did while she was gone!
Just make sure the dancing girls took all of their costumes with them.

Her flight took off 36 minutes late, and they were going to make up about 15 minutes of that before arrival. Just in about the last hour, they pushed the late arrival out another quarter hour, to 35 minutes late.
…..and now they’ve pulled it back in by five minutes. Thirty minutes after original schedule.
…..and now it’s pulled back an additional 1 minute, so they’ll be 29 minutes after the original schedule. I have a funny feeling that this avoids the “late penalties” if they’re 30+ minutes late.
This is why there are cell phone lots.

Years back we saw a Mitch Albom play about Ernie’s life and it was incredibly moving. Ernie’s passing was truly the end of a nobler, gentler, and more colorful era.
It’s the same for us lacking Jack Buck and Mike Shannon. Summer just isn’t the same.

Brief ground report from the Gaylord area of Northern Michigan. On 2 different trips around town I was counting campaign signs for prez, Kommiela 3 & Trump 8. Heading North on Old 27 there were 2 nearly adjacent properties with extensive Kommie signage with no counteracting Trump signs nearby.
the second trip was more promising as I drove in the neighborhood of our first home. Ultimately on this trip I saw 5 Kommie signs, though one was a bumper sticker on a trailer in a parking lot so could be an overlap with a property sign.
there were 32 Trump signs I saw. One home had a flagpole higher than the roof with a large red Trump flag. Approaching town there was a very enthusiastic Trump fan with a vintage red pickup truck with two jumbo red Trump flags in the bed. He’d also placed at least a dozen signs all around him on what appeared to be a vacant lot but may have been his own unimproved property.
I did see a Trump sign on a vacant lot in a business district as well, but rarely Any political signs at businesses. Throughout the area I observed there were way more signs for local races than for prez.
tHis is a blue collar area with decent tourist activity year round. There isn’t a major employer in the area since Georgia Pacific closed shop some time back, I believe…

I would add something we say in my house; what’s happened to Camel-Uh is she has bought into her own myth. Surrounded by cheerleaders all her life, she has actually believed in her supposed superiority as a human. Probably all the way from undeserved and unearned trophies in childhood up to an un-voted-for appointment to run for the Presidency.

It does look like they’ve tightened standards and the result is more anti BP drugs.
But the revising of standards could also be contributed to more information collected and reassessed. That would be the smart thing to do. If they see more people dying with the 160/95 numbers, a vintage (meaning one who has the betterment of health over profits) scientist might lower the standards.
I am not in any way supporting or agreeing with Big Fkn Pharma. I trust them as far as I can throw the Mayo Clinic. I believe that today, any new change or standard they come up with is more likely to improve their bottom line than the health of the general population.

When my mom was in the hospital last year after her stroke, her BP was 126/80 or something like that without any meds. Her internist had her on anti-hyperintensives. She was always dizzy after taking them. That tells me she probably didn’t need them, unlike my dad who went into ICU with BP of 220/165. Now, he’s always freezing do to the meds.

No, it was the third COVID shot, I’m positive. So was she in a way. Every issue she had – arthritis, GI stuff, bubble on a retina – just intensified after that shot. She told anyone and everyone including hospital staff the day of her eye surgery she wasn’t ever taking another one. I’m sure that’s what did it.
OTOH, since my dad is on powerful anti-hyperintensives, and my youngest brother is on blood thinners due to an artificial heart valve, I’m sure the meds save their lives after the shots. Dad took a month to recover from the second one.

Yeah, that looks like a very poor cause to use anti-hypertensives. It’s definitely the 80 that’s doing it. The 126 is almost normal.
I started taking Turmeric for my ache knees and it’s working well. One off the side effects is possible BP drop, now my BP is down about 5-10 consistently.

my mom’s morning sugar is 95-102. her doctor told her she is PREdiabetic.
I took my test kit when i visited her. postprandial her numbers were around 111. they were never suspect. her rising sugar was the highest and I told her to talk to her doctor about the simvastatin she was taking. it can raise blood sugars. the doctor asked where she heard that and she told him, he then agreed.
Yeah, that whole “prediabetic” thing is sus. Plus, if you do a lab blood test for glucose, they don’t measure it directly any more — they infer it from your A1C…..I’m sure that’s just as accurate (not).
It sure seems like everyone who isn’t pissing candy-canes is “prediabetic”, meaning they just haven’t gotten you yet.
They must have a life-limiting “pre-diabetic” drug in the works.

The last couple of days we were on a little backcountry rural coastal jaunt, from South Carolina into North Carolina…seriously I can’t tell yall what’s happening and I sure can’t tell anybody why.
Two lane highways, winding roads…simple country towns….huge swaths of clear cut construction ready… miles and miles of brand new generic multistory hideously ugly apartments…huge new home tracts some built others in the advertising stage..from the banners, NOT cheap.
Life as these communities will never be the same. How many tens of thousands are they expecting to leave their hometowns and cities to move to backwater places??

Heading S on Old 27 til accessing I-75 3 Harris signs to 5 Trump signs, all on 2-lane hwy.
On I-75, mid Michigan, 2 Harris billboards, one claiming she would save Social Security, iirc. The other more disturbing, image of a white woman w/ verbiage like “I’m a long time Christian. I voted for Trump twice. I’m voting for Harris.” spit
There were 2 Trump representations, one a large flag on a flagpole and the other a Trump banner closer to the ground, both roughly 10 yards from the highway. Both Trump items appeared to have been put up by private people. The Harris billboards are likely being paid for by some type of PAC I’d guess.
In a ritzy neighborhood along Hickory Ridge Road 2 Trump signs (possibly more but I didn’t confirm due to traffic) to 1 Harris sign. Along Telegraph between Square Lake Road & M-10: 2 Trump signs & 2 Harris signs. There may have been more of both because major intersections were “littered” with dozens of signs but I was in such heavy traffic I couldn’t adequately read most signs.
In my own neighborhood, on my route in only, there were 8 Trump signs/flags to 2 Harris signs. Unfortunately the Harris people are on my block, but thankfully still outnumbered by Trump enthusiasts here 🙂
Based on signage observations across 250 miles of Michigan it appears Trump is leading!
