Well…a lot of the work behind the scenes can be done remotely. I have a brother who is a computer engineer, and he works remotely for a government agency. As long as the work gets done, who cares.
I care, and here’s why.
Going to work is more than the work being done. It’s water-cooler discussion of issues, it’s dealing with other coworkers, it’s being friends with the weird guy in the next cubicle, it’s making it work with blacks, whites, women, Asians, everybody.
In other words, it’s about community. The loss of community and socialization is what is destroying America. And this is part of that. If leftists can sit home on their couch, and never have to speak to the conservative Christian at work, who’s a really sweet human they would like if they did, then they can continue to believe that all Christians are bigoted jerks. Same with all others who disagree with them.
For a lot of jobs, you have a point. But computer engineers/programmers? The department my brother works for is two time zones from him. Aside from that, they do have zoom meetings and the like. It’s not like they don’t communicate.
It is still my opinion that it would be healthier both for your brother and society at large for him to work face-to-face with others. But of course, as always, we disagree civilly here at the Q Tree.
I come from a family of Irish engineers. Communication is optional.

There’s something to that. Procrastination for me ends up being cleaning the house. That can get in the way.
Back in my video equipment days, a lot of time I’d come in about 10 am…..but after everyone left at 5, I’d start walking the shop floor…..
And, the next day, work areas would have post-its. Lots and lots of post-its. “Kit 60 1203 boards”, “Send this kit out for assembly — we’ll put the crystals on later when they arrive”, “The silkscreen on these panels is smudged, send them back to try to salvage”, “Prioritize testing for work order 44847”, “Expedite transformers”….
Sometimes, I wouldn’t get home until 9 pm.
But it’s often helpful to have that quiet time to let everything synchronize.

The last big gov job I did was remote. We had secure connections to meet individually or as groups discussing issues of importance. I am a tech writer, so when I worked with engineers, we would discuss as needed. When I am writing or editing, the last thing I care about is people’s skin color or community other than tech meetings where their physical bodies don’t matter to me at all. Those techs who scoped the site capabilities and installed the infrastructure needed to be in an office and traveled around the world to the sites. Those who defined the architecture of the tech and who defined how things should be configured and connected and secured, did not need patty cake. The distributed brains IMHO makes things more secure, not less.

Parts of my sister’s job are done from home, especially in the spring. Far fewer interruptions than when she is in the office. She gets her work done, her bosses don’t care where she does it.
Having worked as one of the pioneers of work-at-home, and having watched so many CEOs like Marissa Mayer (Yahoo) later shoot themselves in the foot by making clunky prohibitions of work-at-home, I caution against the hubris of banning it, or even restricting it too much.
There is a VERY sweet spot of EFFICIENCY where people who NEED work-at-home, or people who are more productive using work-at-home, get it, and those who do not, or are not, are not pushed into it by stupid management.
Make work-at-home work for the right reasons. That’s what’s needed.
I can imagine that the FAKENESS of COVID pushed far too many government employees into working at home. I observed that and said “WHAT THE FUCK!”
It was very false. We over-did work-at-home as a way of installing communism, and thank goodness it failed.
Just fix it. But don’t fix it like Pol Pot would fix it. Don’t be stupid.
Pre-COVID I found that about 2 days a week away from the office made things run smoother.
Often that meant going to the datacenter to work, or working from home while on an outage bridge, but the principle held true.
I needed to be away from people to focus on my work, and then I needed to be in the office to get facetime with people to move my work forward.
Russia and China are doing an amazing job of breaking up NATO by helping along its contradictions. Primary among those – anybody who took Soros money, or opposed “fixing this shit” by Trump.
NATO and “Atlantis” (the ecology around the pond) were always headed for downsizing – the question was who would be in charge of it.

Allow me to posit another grammar distortion that has extremely damaging effects on our society: domicile replaced with resident or residence.
Obviously the word residence used in a statute or legal document has an invisible modifier – valid or legal. But residence has little or no legal meaning/effect unless it is also assumed to be one’s domicile.
However, the average person incorrectly assumes that living somewhere confers legal rights [a common example is anchor babies]. It might but it might not. Especially in the area of legal status in this country.
Forms for federal benefits should ask for the applicant’s domicile and if that answer is somewhere other than the USA, then most likely no benefits are available. But as long as the answer to residence is taken to mean the same as domicile, then the applicant is deemed to have the right to receive benefits.
If I have mis-stated anything [only on my 1st cup of coffee], please correct me.
I’m more concerned by the fact that the average person actually thinks “domicile” is just a fancy word for “where you live.”
So changing the phrasing on the form will alter nothing.
It must be signed under penalty of perjury.

I drive 55 miles I-10 in N FL at least twice a week, going back and forth to the Village and more when taking Sally and her Dad to doctor appointments.
This is what I have observed about that stretch of road:
The best speed in the left lane is 79 and 70-75 in the right lane.
Semi Trucks go 6-75 in the right lane.
Those big tall pickup trucks are the fastest – they usually go 80+ – I move over to the left lane for those guys.
If someone is hogging the fast lane going 70mph – and won’t move over when we approach – we usually pass them on the right.
FL law says we should move to the left lane if a car is stopped on the shoulder – by car trouble or law enforcement.
I have been told by a friend of a State Trooper that they do not stop anyone under 80mph on I-10 in N FL. – So I usually go 77-79 mph.
The key to successful tailgating (IMHO) is to check your cell phone every few seconds to see if something important happened.

If the weather has been above freezing before the snowfall, there is still a bit of heat left in the hard surface of the paved areas, so the snow will melt here before that heat is expended.
As for the news, some papers or tabloids are more prone to exaggeration than others.
My dad always cleared the sidewalks & drive down to the pavement so regardless of the temp the sun always finished getting the edges & any errant ice build up. He used to even make us shovel the turnarounds on their boulevard street as that county road always had very crappy snow removal activity. Usually their city had plowed the sidewalks before the county had plowed that main thoroughfare…sigh…Oh he also would clear a path to the storm sewer so the melting snow runoff can drain away. I’ve been doing that at our house so we don’t end up with a huge frozen puddle at the base of our driveway; train up a child & all 😉

Yes! I thought Tulsa was bad compared to Detroit but my 5 years in Northern Michigan, with the last winter having 250″ of snow, made Detroit seem like hyperventilating whiners when there’s less than even an inch of snow. Suck it up Buttercup! We had friends from one of the more remote Canadian provinces & they had to plug their cars into electric engine warmers to even start them up in the morning, all just taken in stride, of course.
The tiny town in N MI where we lived did a Great Job with managing the roads with plowing & sand primarily so that driving up there in much snowier conditions was still much safer than down state.
I hate the snow driving for the first couple of snows of the season because people are idiots since they apparently forgot their winter driving skills, but things settle down a few snows into the year, thankfully 🙂

When I first drive in the snow each season I try to skid a bit on my street or a messy parking lot just to refresh my mind on how to handle the car in these conditions. And I say ALL of this as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and rape as an adult. So I have some experience, you might say.

Guyana and India signed memoranda of understanding (MoU) for cooperation in multiple sectors, including hydrocarbons. The signings were executed during a State Visit by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Guyana, on November 20.
Guyanese Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Kwame McCoy, who has responsibility for information said, “The Memorandum of Understanding establishes a framework for Guyana and India to enhance bilateral collaboration in the hydrocarbon sector. It encompasses investment promotion, technology transfer, joint studies, and capacity building across the entire hydrocarbon value chain.”

I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Attorney General Ken Paxton Sues the City of Dallas for Ballot Measure Prohibiting Police from Enforcing Marijuana-Related Offenses
AUSTIN – Attorney General Ken Paxton sued the City of Dallas and local officials for adopting a city charter amendment that would illegally decriminalize marijuana-related offenses and prohibit police from enforcing Texas law.
Earlier this month, the City of Dallas adopted Proposition R, which “prohibits the Dallas Police Department from making arrests or issuing citations for marijuana possession or considering the odor of marijuana as probable cause for search or seizure.” However, municipalities cannot refuse to enforce Texas drug laws concerning possession and distribution of marijuana—an illicit substance that psychologists have increasingly linked to psychosis and other negative consequences. Texas Local Government Code forbids any political subdivision from adopting “a policy under which the entity will not fully enforce laws relating to drugs.” Further, the Texas Constitution makes it unlawful for municipalities to adopt ordinances that are inconsistent with the laws enacted by the Texas Legislature (Article XI, Section 5).
Attorney General Paxton said, “Cities cannot pick and choose which State laws they follow. The City of Dallas has no authority to override Texas drug laws or prohibit the police from enforcing them. This is a backdoor attempt to violate the Texas Constitution, and any city that tries to constrain police in this fashion will be met swiftly with a lawsuit by my office.”
Attorney General Paxton has taken numerous actions to ensure that cities and political subdivisions follow the law and enforce prohibitions against illicit narcotics. In January 2024, he sued five cities for adopting illegal marijuana decriminalization policies that promote crime, drug abuse, and violence.

Blue states are better for families — at least that’s what many academics and journalists contend. In their book “Red Families v. Blue Families: Legal Polarization and the Creation of Culture,” law professors Naomi Cahn and June Carbone argued that blue states have the liberal values and policies they believe make for strong and stable families. Likewise, Washington Post columnist Catherine Rampell recently claimed that progressive family policies in Democratic states like Minnesota provide “evidence that one major party cares about children and families; and the other does not.”
Their assumption is that blue states are more family friendly in part because they boast progressive policies like universal pre-K, free school lunches and paid family leave that lend direct state support to the care of kids. Moreover, blue states’ commitment to higher education, an egalitarian family life and delayed family formation is also a plus in Cahn and Carbone’s book as they believe all this stabilizes family life in America.
But is the blue-state family model working outside the halls of academia and the pages of The Washington Post — in other words, in the real world?
There are mounting signs the answer is “no.”
A recent Institute for Family Studies study found parents are much more likely to move out of blue states and into red ones than vice versa. In 2021-2022, roughly 180,000 more families left blue states for red states than vice versa. The migratory appeal of red states to ordinary families with children is certainly one strike against the idea that blue states are more family friendly than red ones.
Beyond mobility trends, where are Americans most likely to have babies? Again, the answer is red states. Republican states (those that Trump won in 2020) generally have markedly higher fertility rates than Democratic ones (those that Biden won), suggesting that more men and women feel confident about starting and raising families in red states than blue ones.
According to the latest CDC data, the highest total fertility rates in 2023 were found in red states like South Dakota (2.01), Texas (1.81) and Utah (1.80). By contrast, blue states such as Vermont (1.30), Oregon (1.35) and California (1.48) lag well behind when it comes to childbearing. In fact, the top 10 states for fertility in 2023 were red states, and the bottom 10 states for fertility were blue states. So, while progressive commentators like Rampell celebrate blue-state policies like paid parental leave and free school lunches that are supposed to help families, it’s clear that families are voting with their feet — and their family planning decisions — for states without those policies.

Jussie Smollett has had his conviction for lying to the police with a bizarre anti-Trump hoax overturned in a sensational ruling from the Illinois Supreme Court.
The court found that the former ‘Empire’ actor had his rights violated by a special prosecutor’s decision to retry him after initial charges against him were dropped.
Smollett was convicted in December 2021 for lying to police about two men attacking him, yelling homophobic slurs and placing a noose around his neck while wearing MAGA hats.
He was sentenced to 150 days in jail and 30 months probation after it was proven that he made the episode up, and he was also slapped with a hefty fine of $130,160.
Smollett appealed the ruling and has not yet served a day of that sentence behind bars, and his conviction was previously affirmed by a lower court before the Supreme Court agreed to hear his appeal.
The actor’s hoax and subsequent arrest sparked a media firestorm years ago, as it was bizarrely found that he had actually paid two Nigerian brothers – Abel and Ola Osundairo – to stage the incident.

I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback – and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1. I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history. I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I’m certain he will Save America.

Honest to God, I watched that this morning, and OH MY! Centuries of soot is gone. It’s GORGEOUS. I have to go back, now. It was so dark when I was there 25 years ago.

That is what I remember as well from my 2009 visit – a dark interior. I have watched this video with tears in my eyes, so vividly remembering that horrible day of the fire. I’m so happy the restoration stayed true to the historic design.
I wish they had replaced the forest of white oak in the attic with ironwork worthy of the home of the Eiffel Tower. It’s not like it wouldn’t be nice; few people would ever see it; and it would make the kind of fire that ravaged the building virtually impossible.
Some people are complaining about the soot being gone.
To my mind, anything to keep any medieval building (castle, church, cathedral) from looking like it is in Mordor (or for that matter Batman’s Gotham City seemed to all be black as well) is a good thing.
Just in time for our Holy Season of birth 🙏

I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect. Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!
I caught a snippet of Bill O’Reilly on some program on the radio earlier. I know he can be a blowhard; I’m just reporting what he said. He doesn’t think Hegseth or RFKJ will last either. He would not vote for RFKJ because he thinks some of his positions are radical and because he’s a Democrat whom he doesn’t trust.
O’Reilly appears to think it’s necessary to have nominees who satisfy the status quo, although he didn’t say it like that. He is probably correct that those kinds of nominees are the ones most likely to be confirmed, but when you’re trying to blow things up (in a good way, to save the country), you need bulls in china shops.
I think the way things are going, O’Reilly might be right. I have had doubts all along about Gaetz making it through. There was too much pushback against him, and that is starting to be true for the other two as well. Whatever happens should not appear to be a victory for Dems and RINOs. We need candidates just as strong who might be less controversial.
It was a BAD MOVE for Trump to give way on Gaetz. That signaled WEAKNESS and that is the last thing you want when dealing with the Cabal.
It’s certainly taking off huge chess piece off the board. Confirmed or not, I was so looking forward to the confirmation hearing and American’s getting a front row seat to hear about all the crimes committed in the last 8 plus years, really going all the way back to Clinton.
Only hope left seems to be Kash Patel getting nominated to the FBI. Other than that, it seems all those crimes will get washed away and the Demon Rats get to start with a whole new clean slate.
