Seems to have. I ran an errand this afternoon and it started well both here and there.

There were numerous advantages changing it here instead of there. Two worth mentioning. Number one was that the old battery had no handle, so I used gloves to reach down in its hole to lift it out (roughly 50 pounds). Number two was that the hold-down hookies need to go in slots on the sides down in the battery hole, and I used a flashlight to see where they were (despite it being daylight).

Mind you, this is a 1994 automobile, and the symptoms were the same as the last three times I changed the battery. Of some note is that the old battery had a 30-month warranty from December 2020. The new battery has a 36-month warranty from December 2024.

There are numerous new battery options — gel, glass, exotic chemicals….

The problem is that some of them can’t be charged with my battery charger/starter and some may even react violently. So I stuck with the same ecosystem (lead/acid) so I won’t accidentally blow myself up some day.

Cost about $140 + California “core charge” of $12 or so + tax. Prolly have to do it again around 2028.

Eh….it’s pretty easy to detect a failed battery.

Past tense noted. Won’t start, battery / generator / alternator to sort out. (Guessing you have an alternator.)

Slow Guy thinking prevention may be an option.

Had thought the load test, detected failing / failed cells. Ideally before outright battery failure to perform.

Perhaps I’m mistaken.

The time I push-started it at the Getty, I did a battery change in LA despite living up here. It’s a pain, and you don’t always get the best deal on the battery and the logistics frequently suck…..but it could be worse.

The thing about load test, detecting failing/failed cells, etc. is that it is a service. To have a service done in California is going to cost a bunch, and you will likely get someone less competent than you should be able to expect — and you’ll have to wait in line.

If it’s free (like at a place that sells batteries), it’s even worse. They will almost always recommend a new battery and may sabotage your old one.

These things may have been trustworthy in the 70s in California, and may be trustworthy elsewhere, but in 2020’s California I wouldn’t bother.

I haven’t looked to see if it’s still there.

And to be honest I couldn’t keep some of these auto parts places straight in my head sometimes. “Was that Auto Zone or the other place.” One renamed itself to Oreilly and got away from red/orange as its colors so that helped.

Pep Boys used to be one of the closest auto parts stores to my house. Then, they abruptly closed out their auto parts business (retaining the service bays and tires). I guess they have now subleased most of their building to yet another auto parts place, but the year-and-some that they were useless left me feeling they are unreliable.

Lead-acid batteries gradually go bad because the surface of the lead plates gradually becomes plated with impurities.

I have heard some discussion that wildly rapid over-charging can electrochemically disrupt this crud off the plates. Even those who speculate about this procedure insist that it be done in a large uninhabited area suitable for acidic explosions.

Thankfully have not had to charge a battery for several decades. Well, short of driving around for ~20 minutes.

Not to worry if using a “fast auto battery charger” for a battery type it’s designed for. That’s something like a 14 volt charge (for a 12V battery) at 2A.

The insane peeps talking about “cleaning the plates” are talking about something like 50V at 10A for some minutes while venting, then changing-out the acid. It’s supposed to work, but for some reason you don’t hear about people doing it regularly…..

The charger I have has a “recovery mode” which doesn’t overcharge, but uses pulses, so it’s not a continuous stress on the battery.

50V could get you a boom with a view, and either some nasty burns, or a rather etched engine/hoses/wires/etc… not to mention your garage floor…

More than once have used a headlight, working on a project during the day. That and a flashlight with a magnet in the base, swivel head…

TMI. Ended up with a used riding lawn mower battery when we moved into this place. Local Sam’s said bring it by and put it with their used battery area. Free. Had guessed there would be a fee or take it some place that charges.

I should keep a light in the car. I already have jumper cables there, and a collection of screwdrivers.

Incidentally, batteries have a box-size number that seems to follow no rhyme or reason (like women’s clothing sizes) [ https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/r/advice/car-maintenance/battery-size-chart ]. The one I just bought was a 24F. A 24 has its terminals swapped, and is a slightly different size overall !!!

Rumor has it that I could also use a type 35, and maybe even other sizes, but 24F is what it was and 24F is what it is until I change it again.

Have one. It’s old (the first generation to include USB). I probably need to change the battery inside, but I haven’t really used it that much.

My neighbor’s got a modern one about the size of a laptop battery. Ain’t technology wunnerful?

Also little use in my case. None on my vehicles. Yet.

Main reason I keep a jump box and a small compressor, is my long AND frequent drives across the Interstates.

But then again, long drives I also have a small pillow, blanket, water… I’m weird about stuff like this.

It’s always better to have resources when TSHTF. I’ve driven from here to Vancouver, BC, and back (in summer) — but your trips from the Reno area to the Houston area are substantially more challenging.

In Winter, in upstate NY, I carried winter clothing, down sleeping bag, food, water, my Sigg tourister camp stove kit, Two 50# bags of sand.

Turned out I need the 2 bags of sand to get a semi stuck across the parking lot unstuck. Otherwise the entire factory would have been stranded at work during a blizzard.

People think I’m weird for having a screwdriver collection in the well for my spare wheel. And, yet, when I was 400 miles from home and my gas hatch decided to get sticky, I twiddled it with a screwdriver at a gas station…..so I could get home and debug it with WD-40.

WD 40 is a big NO NO!

It makes things stick worse in the long run. It was never meant to be a lubricant.

That is from an old caving buddy. He was a mechanical eng. who was sent to troubleshoot his company’s machines. He said the first thing he did was TOSS all the WD 40 in the maintenance shop.

The conversation happened because the throttle linkage on my VW pick-up would stick. I would spray it with WD 40 and it would stick again a few weeks later. He recommended a silicone spray. I used it and the problem never re-occurred.

So I stock, liquid wrench and a silicone spray lube. No WD 40 on the farm.😋

In addition, you should have a graphite lube for locks and such.

The “WD” in “WD-40” is “Water Displacement”. It is useful in purging things like cable runs that have gotten wet.

Like the one that was causing my gas filling hatch latch to stick. I dealt with it several years ago and haven’t had a problem since.

There is a meme going around that if something moves that shouldn’t, it needs duct tape; if something doesn’t move that should, it needs WD-40. In real life, those are both poor choices.

Duct tape isn’t even really that good on ducts — and leaves crappy residue all over everything else. WD-40, as you note, can gum up things where it is used to lubricate.

Can also use kitty litter instead of sand. Have a shovel, sometimes boards to put under tires. If a real die-hard a coffee can with a smaller can to hold a candle to melt ice if stranded for extra drinking water. Tow ropes can come in handy as well…oh & tire chains 🙂

I bought mine, including the stove, for $50 over 12 years ago, and was glad to get it then.

They are “that wonderful” and I use mine 9 out of 10 trips. The big key is the interlocking pans/windshield, which gives a very stable system. This is big in the backcountry, because little bumps against your cooking vessel don’t send your dinner into the dirt. It’s very wind-resistant as well.

Light and nicely self-contained to carry. The Trangia is the only real comparator (at least among readily-available setups).

The “F” was used because way back in the mists of history, all US made cars had one terminal location design but Ford used the same size with the terminals swapped. I don’t think anybody knows why Ford decided to do it their way.

Asus also did it with their Serial jack add-in cards/cables. Why, oh why, oh why…. they got whacked for it from their customers, and finally changed to the norm, sometime back in the Athlon II era…

I found this little gem in an American Thinker article.

The Department of Defense spent over $10,000,000 of your dollars to slice open male cats’ spinal cords to implant electrodes that fired electric shocks to give the cats erections before finally severing the spinal cord entirely.   • Fired when they fund stoopid studies.
  • Fired for funding studies in other countries, that can be done in the States.
  • Studies that must be done in other countries, probably is NOT needed OR illegal in the States. So, they should not be done, at all.

Transparency over Federal obligations, contracts is required..

That’s it. That’s the list (there are a couple of others that are mentioned in other places in the Constitution, but they are minor).

There is NOTHING in there about education. There is NOTHING in there about national pensions. There is NOTHING in there about regulating food or drugs. In case it wasn’t clear enough that there is NOTHING in there about arms held by citizens, this is reinforced by the Second Amendment. There is NOTHING in there about the government controlling vast tracts of land in western states. There is NOTHING in there about Federal regulation of mining or land use — those are state issues.

What you see is what you should get.

That’s an indication not to make it too broad. If you can establish a post office, you can write laws having to do with the Post Office.

Commerce is trickier to wrap up in limits. I’d probably simply gut that entirely and put in a prohibition against states putting up tariffs and excises against each other.

I suspect the commerce clause enables things like defining the measuring system; I’d want to make sure that’s still allowed.

but if we are funding it, then it should become a national benefit to AMERICANS. can it be patented with the resulting patents being a national thing? and any technology that uses that information or patent pays a significant fee that goes into providing Americans free benefits from that technology. for instance–robotic arms. if we funded the studies that provided the technology that resulted in the ability to make better robotic arms, then the company that utilizes the results that created the better arms provides free or significantly cheaper robotic arms to Americans that need them. and the rest of the world can pay the regular fees?

Now Jeran has to move.

Jeran is still enamored of the flat earth (beats me how), but he’s definitely not happy with flat earthers.

Here’s another one, some sort of livestream. At one hour and 34 minutes Karen B shows up and she will shortly go on a tirade against all those accusing the final experiment of being faked, somehow (especially the dipstick in blue, second row on the left).

As a community they’re honestly not sure whether to dismiss it as fake or somehow try to come to terms with what it shows. Until they settle that, they’re at each other’s throats.

OK, late in the Jeran video he’s asked if he thinks we’re living on a sphere.

He says that what he saw matches perfectly with a sphere. He can’t figure out a flat earth way to explain what he saw; he’s leaving the door open for someone else to figure something out that works. But he says at this point he wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a sphere in fact.

What he is still adamant about is the sphere (or flat earth) not rotating. Whichever one it is, it’s not rotating. He is convinced you wouldn’t be able to fly airplanes, etc. on a rotating sphere. (No understanding of momentum.) So if it’s a sphere…well he goes back to Ptolemaic geocentrism where everything rotates around the stationary spherical earth.

I posted something recently, a debate between FTFE (“fight the flat earth”) and someone named Nico.

It became clear within five minutes that Nico had a presupposition (actually two of them). 1) The Bible says the earth is flat. 2) Whatever the Bible says is to be regarded as axiomatically true.

Those two suppositions require that he dismiss any evidence to the contrary as faked. If he saw it with his own eyes, he’d still be convinced it was faked somehow. Because the Bible cannot be wrong. He will literally believe the Bible (and his reading of it) over his lying eyes.

And he does precisely that–everything to the contrary is faked. Certainly any attempt to educate him on momentum would either just be dismissable indoctrination if he perceives it as contrary to the Bible, or he’d accept it.

But then (and believe-it-or-stuff-it, properly) he would not consider an understanding of momentum as proving round earth. (Momentum is the debunk to an objection to round, spinning earth, it doesn’t prove round spinning earth.)

There was a second debate the next day, which I didn’t post. When FTFE demanded he show his evidence rather than just saying he had it, as often as not he would hold up his KJV in front of the camera.

But my point would have got lost then as soon as dozens of people spoke up to say the the Bible doesn’t say the Earth if flat; they’d be mad at me accusing the Bible of saying so, too mad to see the point I wanted to make, which is that this guy won’t accept reality because he thinks God told him not to. Remember this was in answer to someone thinking that teaching him physics would “work.” Not when he thinks God is on the other side, it won’t.

What does the Bible actually say? I have seen arguments that it really does call out a flat earth. And others that aver otherwise. Me? In this context I don’t fucking care what it says; it’s not part of my decision process and insofar as people are looking at questions of scientific fact, I wish it wasn’t part of anyone’s decision process.

As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.

With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

Until the end of his life, my late father (who participated in Patton’s march to Bastogne) idolized General Patton. I think the thousands and thousands of other men in Patton’s Army did, also. My father firmly believed that Gen. Patton was murdered because several “other high-ranking officers” weren’t happy that he defied previous orders to not organize the army that marched to save Bastogne.

Recently there was a puzzle of Van Gogh’s Starry Night painting at our local library. Working on that puzzle made me so appreciative of the detailed, complex brushwork that went into that painting. If you are learning to copy Van Gogh’s brushwork then you must be a very skilled artist yourself.

Do you ever try the techniques you learn in copying famous pieces in something along “in the style of” these famous artists? So in the style of Irises you might attempt say lilacs or roses….

Even LEGO has Starry night. One of the reviews on the German site (by a reviewer who’s built ALL of the art LEGO pieces) said that the Starry Night one is different from all the others, as you are basically recreating the layers that Van Gogh created when he made the painting….

Little late. CDC had enough data from the trials to know the vax would bring on many such problems not just stroke. After the trials data just kept piling up but CDC ignored it. We know the problems with the vax, what needs to be investigated is the the CDC/FDA and approval process. Sorry speaking to the choir here. Too bad CDC doesn’t read here or if they did, take heed of what they read. The only thing left to discuss on this subject is how much justice needs to be piled on their heads.

As Slay News reported, renowned surgical oncologist Dr. Kathleen Ruddy has seen several late-stage cancer patients make dramatic recoveries after taking ivermectin.

Ruddy told the story of one patient who had reached the end of the road after cancer treatments couldn’t do anything more to help him.

He had stage four prostate cancer and tried all the conventional protocols before doctors told him that there was nothing they could do.

Then, he started taking ivermectin.

Within six months, the metastatic lesions began to disappear.

In under a year, “he was out dancing for four hours” three nights per week, according to Dr. Ruddy.

A similar scenario unfolded for another patient named Eddie, Ruddy revealed.

He was also in bad shape.

Eddie was diagnosed with two unresectable esophageal tumors that surgeons wouldn’t go near.

He was a smoker, couldn’t swallow, and had lost 40 pounds in a year and a half.

“Within a couple of weeks, he sounded stronger. He could swallow,” reported Dr. Ruddy.

“He had gained six pounds. His voice was better.”

Several weeks later, Dr. Ruddy said to Eddie, “You need to get a scan.”

“We got the scan. No tumors. Gone. Gone,” Dr. Ruddy said with astonishment.

“The problem was that he had sold his fishing boat.

“That was the biggest problem. He was getting better. His tumor was gone.”

Ruddy said several other patients have also been treated with ivermectin and they all made miraculous recoveries.

It was at this point that Ruddy said she needed to raise the alert about the success of the drug.

“I was as astonished as anyone might be that ivermectin has potential as an anti-cancer agent,” says Ruddy.

She noted that the probably of the patients recovering coincidentally while taking ivermectin was “zero”

“It’s like winning the lottery on the first three tickets you ever buy,” she explained.

Meanwhile, a recent study found that ivermectin can successfully treat several different forms of cancer.

As Slay News reported, the major study confirmed ivermectin is successful in treating multiple cancers after testing its use against 28 types of the disease.

The researchers sought to identify the effectiveness of using ivermectin as a cancer treatment.

The study found that ivermectin was successful in treating all of the cancers it was tested against.

While some cancers were more resistant to ivermectin than others, the drug still proved at least useful and also helped to improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

Have you checked your oxygen levels? The level of fatigue you are experiencing could be due to low blood oxygen levels. And as much as you are coughing, it sure sounds like lung involvement is high. This happened with a dear friend of mine for months after a Covid incident.

A pulse-oximeter should be easy to find at a local pharmacy.

Way back, I read that the problem with Covid lungs is not the amount of oxygen getting into the lungs. The problem is the lungs aren’t properly absorbing and transporting the oxygen in the blood. It’s akin to high-altitude sickness. That’s why the ventilators were hurting more than helping.

Russian anti-aircraft system may have struck Azerbaijan plane that crashed: US official

There are early indications that a Russian anti-aircraft system may have struck the Azerbaijan Airlines plane that crashed in Kazakhstan, killing dozens, a U.S. official told ABC News.

There is new evidence that the passenger plane may have been shot down by a Russian surface-to-air missile from a Pantsir-S1 system, a high-level Azeri government source told ABC News.

If Russia did indeed strike the Azerbaijan plane, the U.S. official said it would be yet another example of Russia’s recklessness in the war with Ukraine. The plane was flying over an area where Moscow’s air defense has battled Ukrainian drones recently.

The White House referred ABC News to officials in the region as the investigation continues.

At least 38 people are dead and 29 others injured after the Azerbaijan Airlines passenger aircraft crashed near Kazakhstan’s Aktau Airport on Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations told ABC News.

The 29 injured passengers were initially taken to the Regional Hospital in Aktau, where six people remained hospitalized as of Thursday, the hospital said. The others were transferred to their respective countries for further treatment.

The aircraft was flying from Baku in Azerbaijan to Grozny in Russia when it crashed near Aktau in Kazakhstan, the spokesperson said. The flight had been rerouted to Aktau due to fog in Grozny, Russian news agencies reported.

The prosecutor general’s office of Azerbaijan has launched a criminal case regarding the facts of the crash, officials announced during a press briefing on Wednesday.

“Currently, the investigation process is ongoing in cooperation with the prosecutor’s office of Kazakhstan. All versions are being explored in the criminal case,” Farid Huseynov, a spokesperson for Azerbaijan Airlines, said.

Aviation authorities from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia are collaborating to determine the exact cause of the crash, a spokesperson for Kazakhstan’s ministry of emergency situations said.

The plane was carrying 69 people: 64 passengers and five crew members. Based on preliminary data, the passengers included 37 Azerbaijani citizens, six from Kazakhstan, three from Kyrgyzstan and 16 from Russia, Kazakh officials said.

I’ve been watching this one closely. Both sides are admitting to a lot of sudden Ukrainian Drone activity in the vicinity of Grozny, Russia which is just inside Russa neighboring in the direction that the flight would have arrived from. It’s also a part of Russia that is far from the fighting in Ukraine. Complicate this with Christmas day when leaders are likely to have left for the holidays and reports from both sides of fog and murky skies and it’ ripe for setting a trap for Russian Air Defense in setting up the airliner to become a target of Russian Air defenses.

That said though the damage to the airliner from a Air Defense munition exploding near the tail end of the airliner could also have come from a drone doing the same thing.

The propaganda machine is in full force on this story, bound to blame Russia for shooting down the aircraft. If it was Russia it seems strange that the Air Liner only suffered minimal damage to the tail end of the Air Liner and was not blown from the sky.

Too early still to say exactly what happened but it was definitely the result of someone exploding something near the air craft or sporadic small arms fire from the ground, which can’t be ruled out as there is the video of an earlier large drone getting blasted out of the sky but before that happened you could hear sporadic ground fire trying to engage the drone.

Grozny which is in the Chechen providence is the gate way city to the Caucus Mountains from the North. It’s been a problem area since Roman times and recently as well. CIA likely has lots of experience in the area stirring up trouble.
